The Image Of Agriculture
The image of American agriculture is changing dramatically, and it is important that all of us be aware of the speed with which the change is occurring. It is not enough just to recognize these changes, however. All of us in agribusiness must tell our friends and neighbors. Let us not assume that everyone knows
what is happening. It is understandable, that much of
the urban population has not been able to grasp the significance of the
technological advancements, management advances and the change of attitudes in agribusinesses. It perplexes and concerns me when people within our industry have not been able to adjust their methods and attitudes to
keep pace. How can we expect our financial
institutions to extend loans for the large capital investments we need, if we don't keep good records, or

present our lending institution with a sound proposal for repayment. We can no longer say: "I'm just a poor old country boy, and I don't understand all those documents." Those few people producing 80% of the nation's food and fiber understand, and when necessary use those documents to complete any and all transactions that confront them.
How can we expect to receive political consideration if our representatives think of us as a Country Bumkin minority group, without influence economically or politically.
Agriculture is still the base upon which all, economics are built. It is definitely the backbone of the U.S. economy. Only because of America's agricultural efficiency, where one farm laborer supplies himself and forty-five other people with food and fiber, are we able to maintain and increase our standard of living year after year.
Agribusiness is Georgia's largest industry. Seventy-six percent of Georgia's labor force is engaged in the supply, production, processing, transoortation or distribution of food and fiber. Agribusiness also supplies 66% of the state's total payroll. The figures go on and on to verify the tremendous role agribusiness plays in Georgia's economy.
It is the goal of the Georgia Agribusiness Council, Inc. to see that Georgia's largest industry continues to grow and prosper and to receive the positive recognition it so rightly deserves.

State Parks Provide Mental Pollution Cure
By ERNEST F. JESSEE
Milk production on Georgia farms during July totaled 88 million pounds
according to the State Crop Reporting Service.
Information Officer, State Parks Department
Pollution is a sore subject nowadays, particularly since the recent "Earth Day" publicity succeeded in sweeping the "dirt" out from under the rug. Now that it's out in the open, perhaps society will learn to handle pollu-
tion more effectively. Before we can really rout the en-
emy, however, getting to know him a bit better would certainly seem com-
parable to "putting the horse before the cart" where it belongs.
Most of us have already learned to recognize air pollution, water pollu-
tion, and land pollution or littering. But, as Dean Wohlgemuth recently pointed out in his State Game and Fish column, the real "Achilles heel" of pollution lies in our minds.
"Mental pollution." as he calls it, is undoubtedly the most serious form, if not the real progenitor of all other types of pollution. This is society's true "Mr. Tooth Decay," so
let's be more realistic and try some personal hygiene before houseclean-
ing. Mental hygiene need not begin on
the psychiatrist's couch. That's not
only expensive, but also there just isn't enough room for those in need
of help. Get away from the four-wall environment, the traffic congestion, the exhaust fumes, and the problems of office and home, and you'll be on the right path.
Once you are on the right path, it
ought to lead you to one of Georgia's 45 State Parks in little more than an
hour's time. If it doesn't, better stop for directions because you will surely
be lost.
But if the, kids, the dog, the crabgrass, and the chipping paint are
likely to "flip your lid" before vacation time rolls around, try the "hot-
line" (523-1791 AC 404) to the Georgia Department of State Parks, ask
for the Information Division, and a soft-spoken lady will sooth your jan-
gled nerves with some encouraging
words on what you have to look for-

PASTURING PRACTICE
Straight Line! FOUND TO CONTROL
CATTLE PARASITES
Parasitism in cattle may be influenced more by stocking rates on pasture than by grazing system.
Is it safe to refreeze foods that have been thawed out? Name Withheld by Request, Athens
Cattlemen usually practice rotational rather than continuous grazing to, among other things, reduce the number of internal parasites in cattle.
However, ARS microbiologist Honorico Ciordia, with animal scientists D. M. Baird and H. C. McCampbell of the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station, Experiment, Ga., found that a rotational system of grazing did not reduce the number of parasites if the pasture was overstocked; in fact, the number of worms increased.
Our Consumer Protection Division recommends that foods not be refrozen. When putting foods in the freezer, it is better to put smaller packages than larger ones. This is not only safer but cuts down on waste.
**
What can I do to keep rabbits out of my garden? They are eating up everything.
Mr. Miller Neal, Sr., Lawrenceville
Our Entomology Division suggests that you contact your local feed store
for a rabbit rcpellant. This comes in a spray form that is safe to use on all
vegetables. This rabbit repdlant is used after a rain. May we also suggest
th.Jt you place empty one-gallon plastic milk jugs around in your garden.
Put enough sand or similar material in these jugs to weight them down and
leave the cap off. The wind will make the jugs produce a whistling noise
similar to an owl.

We Get Letters
Dear Editor: I wonder if any of your readers could tell me how to cure
animal hides so that the skin is soft and usable, without removing the hair. Thank you.
Mrs. C. H. Davis P. O. Box 252 Savannah Beach, Georgia 31328
Dear Editor: There are two varieties of artichokes. One is a leaf you
cook and eat. The Jerusalem Artichoke is a tuber similar to an Irish potato. It has a delicate flavor all its own. 1 am sure some reader of the MARKET BULLETIN has a good recipe for preparing Jerusalem Artichoke Pickles. Please send if fo the MARKET BULLETIN.
Mrs. C. O. Massey Route 4 Commerce, Georgia 30529
(Editor's note.- The Jerusalem Artichoke is neither an artichoke nor does it come from
Jerusalem. It is a member of the sunflower family and widely cultivated for its edible tubers. It is unknown how it became known as the Jerusalem Artichoke but is known in other parts of the country as the Canada Potato.)

THE MARKET BULLETIN
Straight Linel
(Continued from page 1)
I have several pecan trees. In the last day or so one of them has devel oped some sort of leaf trouble. The leaves have yellow colored raised places on them, that look like blisters. They do not have any worms inside and there are no holes in these leaves but each leaf has many of the yellow raised spots on them. I am wondering what it is.
D. D. Still, Jr., Loganville
We have contacted you to ask that, you mail in some leaves to our Entomology Division. Your trouble could be an insect, disease, or fungus. You should know by now what to do f*or yo* ur tr*ees.
We have bought and planted garden seed for the second time with only about 10 per cent of the seed coming up. We prepared the ground well and fertilized it. Now the ground has turned very white. Could it be bad seed or the fertilizer rotting the seed?
Mrs. W. F. Smith, Dalton
Agrimony -- Agrimonia Eu-
patoria, is an herb of the rose
family and grows from one to two feet tall. It is all over the woods in summer-especially late summer.
The leaves are divided into several coarsely toothed leaflets and the small yellow flowers are in slender spiked racemes.
The olden times the plant was held in high esteem by the town physicians and country herbalist alike. Emerson wanted to know "On!y the herbs and simples of the wood, rue, cinquefoil, gill, vervain, and agrimony."
Up until a recent date the plant has been dried and preserved by country people-either for medicinal uses or for use as a dye. When the plant is about ready to flower it yields a pale yellow dye. It is still found in French shops being used as a dressing for shoe leather.
Chaucer calls it egremoine-which is supposed to be derived from the Greek title for an eye disease as the juice of the plant similarly entitled was used for this purpose in olden times. The crushed yellow flower has a lemon-like odor.
Your statement that the ground is very white indicates that you probably used too much fertilizer or it was not mixed in well with your soil. An excess amount of fertilizer will kill the germination of the seed, particularly bean seed. I am asking our state seed inspector in your area to contact you and get all the information relative to the seed you used. We answered your inquiry by mail but the letter was r*eturn*ed. *
During recent years I have not been able to find "Chilean Nitrate of Soda" which I often prefer to use since it is non-acid forming. Is this a local, state, or national problem? Can you advise me on where to buy this soda.
Name Withheld by Request, Macon
"Chilean" is a brand name of Nitrate of Soda. Ask your local feed and fertilizer dealer to recommend an*othe*r bra*nd if this is not available.
How can I control fire ants? They are making mounds all over my lawn.
Name Withheld by Request, Albany
The safest material to use is Mirex bait. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of Mirex over the mound. Mirex can be obtained through the Fire Ant Committee in your county or in your local garde+n ce*nter.*
Help! Kudzu is taking over! What can we do to get rid of it?
Miss Helen Theos, Atlanta
Although cows are used by some people to control Kudzu, we suggest spraying the foliage with 2, 4-D.
RESPONSE We tried everything for crows in our watermelon patch and finally hit upon a trick that seems to work. Set an empty steel drum up in the patch with the open end up. Put an old hoe handle or long wooden stick in the drum. For some reason this resembles a man with a gun to the crows. We haven't had any more trouble with crows!
Mrs. Gertie Elsberry, Dallas
May we suggest to those of you who have plenty of bamboo that you check with your local Farmer's Market to see if the stalks can be sold for bean stakes.
Georgia State Parks
(Continued from page 1)
there's something for you in Georgia's State Parks. It's nothing like equanil, librium, valium or'any of the other commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals, but as an effective tranqualizer, nothing can beat the unpolluted open air of Georgia's State
Parks. Nothing, that is, but maybe the
completely furnished cottages or mobile homes in the parks, if you happen to be in the company of a true outdoorsman who's a little more enthusiastic about it all than you are.
Even for your rambunctious youngsters, Georgia's parks offer plenty to keep them happy and you in a steadier frame of mind. Most State Parks include among their facilities the finest in playground equipment with everything from the usual slides and swings to de-activated military tanks, airplanes, and armoured troop carriers (Unbreakable, of course!).
If you happen to be the kind of parent who would rather give your child an erector set than a set of tin soldiers, the educational aspects of Georgia's State Parks will suit your needs. Whether it's watching a spider spin an intricate web near a cottage, an insect pollinating a wildflower on a marked nature trail, or a tree turned scarlet by the autumn chill, the curiosity of even the ycungest will be aroused by Mother Nature, thus nurturing both education and appreciation.
Young and old alike will learn
more about Georgia's past and its importance in shaping the present
and future just by seeing the old plantation homes, prehistoric ruins, and museum relics on display in Georgia's State Parks. Likewise,
through films, planned lectures, and guided field trips in the parks, visi-
tors learn the secrets of Georgia's natural heritage as well as the reasons for its careful preservation in
the parks. Yet, the best reasons to "stay and
see" Georgia's State Parks are subtly expressed by the breeze, the fragrances, and the magnificent scen-
ery, endlessly varied and oddly spiced with a spirit of adventure.
Collectively, these are the ingredi-
ents for a prescription which the State Parks Department calls "the re-creating spirit." Guaranteed to
clear all the mental cobwebs and associated physical ailments connected with our predominantly ur-
ban way of life, it's that "certain something" which no State Parks vacationer brings along with him.
but which everyone, consciously or unconsciously, takes home.
This has an astonishing cleansing and refreshing effect which could
only be matched by the legendary powers of the "Fountain of Youth,''
which, incidentally, some historian?; really believe is located at Indian Springs State Park, just 50 milr-;. from Georgia's capital.
