Wild Flowers
Need Protection
The Georgia Botanical Society is trying to protect and conserve our wild flowers, shrubs, and trees, by means of conservation education. We are also attempting to draft a law to protect Georgia's rare and endangered plant species, and to help set aside unique natural areas of endemic plants as wild flower pre-
serves. Through much careless picking and
digging, many of our rare wild plants have almost entirely disappeared from their native haunts. Most of our native plants grow in a very restricted habitat and such exacting conditions of soil and moisture that they will not grow if transplanted from the woods.
This is especially true of all the wild orchids, and the azaleas and other plants of the heath family that have a special root (Mycorrhizal) association with certain fungi. Without the fungi the plants do not adapt to planting in your garden.
Through careless handling, most "dug-up" plants are dead before the digger can get them Ijpme. Careless
(Our guest columnist this week is Mrs. Marie B. Me/linger, Kt. 1, Tiger, Ga. 30576, President of the Georgia Botanical
Society.)______________________ digging can exterminate a whole colony of wild plants at one time. Even the smallest of our native plants is important in the maintenance of the delicate balance of nature. Do help us protect them.
Georgia plants most in need of protection at all times include the walking fern (Camptosorus), the native climbing fern (Lygodium palmatum), all species of trilliums, lilies (L. catesbai, L. michauxii, and L. superbum), trout lilies (Erythronum), and bead lilies (Clintonia). All species of orchids should be included on this list and most especially the showy orchids and the ladyslippers.
Because bogs are being drained and habitat rapidly disappearing, areas with bog plants need to be protected, and bog plants such as grass of parnassus in North Georgia, and all species of pitcher plants, sundews, and butterworts in South Georgia. Other rare plants include the g a y w i n g s (Polygala paucifolia), painted cup (Castilleja), all of the gentians, ginseng (Panax quinquefolia), and golden seal (Hydrastis). These last two have been gathered for medicine until they are almost extinct.
In North Georgia the catawba rhododendron, and the wild azaleas, and especially the flame azalea, and the rare white azalea should be protected. Other heaths in need of protection include the trailing arbutus and the wintergreen.
In South Georgia we need to protect such rare shrubs as the Georgia feverbark (Pinckneya), the Georgia plume (Elliottia), and the small silverbell (Halesia diptera).
Any one having any suggestions on how to save our rare and endangered plants is asked to write to the Georgia Botanical Society, or to me, and express their views.

"Straight Line" Service
By TOMMY IRVIN
Commissioner of Agriculture
The Department of Agriculture is proud to announce the offering of a new service to the people of Georgia, the "Farmers and Consumers Straight Line."
Due to the complexities of today's governmental and service agencies, the department has become aware of the difficulties a consumer may face
in finding the proper person to talk with to get straight answers concerning particular problems.
"Straight Line" will provide quick answers and satisfaction to problems that address themselves to this department or will provide the proper agency, name, address and phone number for questions that should be directed to other agencies.
The Department of Agriculture is in reality a department of agricultural and consumer services as fifty percent of the work of the department is devoted to consumer protection and due to the fact that the
farmer is one of the largest consumers of goods in the country.
"Straight Line" will provide solutions and answers to questions on all phases of consumer work regulated by this department as well as a sounding board for legitimate complaints. Subjects include food and food processing, bakery goods, meats, correct weights, seeds, fertilizers, nursery stock, pest control operations, pesticides, and many others.
To. help us answer your questions with the greatest speed and accuracy possible, we ask that you write us your problems. Phone
calls will be accepted but because of the anticipated amount of requests and the possibility of errors, "Straight Line" prefers not to give answers over the phone. However, all inquiries will be 'handled with as little red tape and with as much speed as possible.
The "Straight Line" column will begin in the May 20th issue of the FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN. Some questions and answers will be published in the MARKET BULLETIN. Others will be answered by a personal visit, call, or letter from the proper official. All letters of inquiry must be signed but names will be withheld upon request. Please let us hear from you. We are here to serve.
Write: Straight Line, Ga. Dept. of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Ga. 30334.
Call: 404/524-3292.

Agriculture and Government in '70s;

Farm Bargaining To Come of Age

Because of our ability to produce more food and fiber than we can use, agriculture in the 1970's will assume an even bigger role in the American government's foreign and domestic policies.

Our agricultural abundance is a
powerful force for world peace. Instead of more "guns and bullets," our agriculture expertise and surpluses may be called upon in the 70's to provide the underdeveloped nations of the world more "bread and butter."
This agricultural assistance will help to relieve hunger, to promote economic growth, and will, enable

these nations to more effectively resist political disruption.
President Nixon has also recently declared war on the hunger and poverty that exists in our own country. The surpluses produced by our super efficient agriculture should go a long way in helping in this struggle.
At the same time agriculture is called upon to take an even greater role in governmental sponsored pro-
grams, the farmers and agribusi-

nesses can expect more involvement in their affairs. The situation is simple: only 31 of the nation's 435 Congressional districts have 25% or more people living on the farm, and 21 states have not a single Congressional district with as much as a 15 f/e farm population.
The present Food and Agriculture Act of 1965 expired in 1969; and while Congress can be expected not to kill all existing agricultural programs, the Nixon administration can be expected to switch gradually in the 70's from the present feed-grain, wheat,

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Farming In '70s

Larger blue flag-Iris versicolor or Fleur-de-lis is the state flower of Tennessee. This iris, the Japanese irises, the Louisiana hybrids and many others are all characterized by the absence of any sort of beard on the petals. All grow from rhizomes. In both form and color this is one of our regal wild flowers and it is easy to understand why the fleur-de-lis was chosen as the emblem of the royal house of Louis VII of France-although the flower that he selected as his badge was probably white. It grows profusely in wet meadows in June.
The blossom is unusually large and showy and always arrests the attention of the bees; blue and purple colors being the favorite colors of these insects. They are probably the only means of fertilization since there is no prospect here of any seed being set unless the pollen of another flower is secured. The bees light on the recorved sepals; following the deep purple veins which experience has taught him lead to the hidden nectar-brushing off its pollen he carries it to another flower.
The common name which we have borrowed from the French does not signify "flower-of-thelily," as it would be literally translated but "flower-of-Louis," - lis being a corruption of the name of the king who first adopted it as his badge.
"Born in the purple, born in joy and pleasance, Thou dost not toil nor spin, But makest glad and radiant with they presence, The meadow and the lin. "-writes Longfellow of the blue flag.
At this time it is being advertised weekly in our BULLETIN.

and cotton allotment programs into a long-term land retirement program.
Regardless of the scope and heat of the current debate on government involvement in agriculture, the ultimate result of Congressional action will be more governmental regulation. This greater control will be true especially with regard to food quality. More rigid inspection of food products and producers will become a reality in the 70's. Greater controls will also be exercised over production practices especially the use of agricultural chemicals.
The farmer's need for chemicals to control insects and weeds is known and is accepted by most people. However, inherent dangers that exist when pesticides and herbicides are used carelessly has made this issue a hot one.
Another hot issue for the 70's will be farmer's right to bargain with processors for the sale of their farm

products. Proposals to make it mandatory for the processors to negotiate with farm bargaining groups such as farm cooperatives could well become reality during the early 70's.
On the other hand, some experts believe that low farm wages have set the stage for some Congressional decision on the establishment of farm labor unions. The question at this time seems to be not "when," but what specific form the legislation will take.
With the emergence of organized farm labor and a continued shortage of labor, there should result in the 70's a narrowing of the wage differences paid on the farm and in industry. The greater skills that will be required by agriculture workers of tomorrow will also make farm wage increases necessary. Several other factors influencing farm wages will be increased industrialization, mobility of the potential labor force, and legal minimum-wage provisions. , In 1966, the average hourly wage paid for U.S. farm labor was $1.26. Minimum wage provisions called for an average of $1.30 an hour by the end of 1969. The results of this higher wage will be greater emphasis on crops with low labor requirement. Costs on crops and other farm products that can not be easily mechanized such as tobacco will be increased to the point in the 1970's that they will become luxuries.
Further tightening of the farm labor supply also means that there will 'be more concern about training farm workers, fringe benefits, and living conditions. These increased benefits and wages w 11 also put an increased premium on the means of finding productive year-round farm jobs for the labor, instead of depending upon seasonal crops.
