Hog Cholera Information

With hog cholera "season" coming soon, a review of preventative and management procedures is suggested for Georgia swine producers.
VACCINATION. Only killed vaccine or anti-hog cholera serum are legally permitted in Georgia; your veterinarian can advise the best procedure for administration. The use of modified live virus is pro hibited.
If killed vaccine is used, two doses should be administered at 30-day intervals; swine should be isolated from all other hogs between doses for effective results.
If anti-hog cholera serum is used, dosages should be one-half cc per pound of body weight up to a maximum of 70cc, according to the State Veterinarian recommendations. If antibody concentrate is used, half the serum dosage is required. If is necessary to isolate treated hogs for effective results.
REPORTING. Any suspicion of hog cholera or hog cholera-like sickness should be reported immediately to your veterinarian, county agent, or the State Veterinarian at the Georgia Department of Agriculture in Atlanta. Early reporting is important not only to the eradication efforts of hog cholera but also because the timing of notification is used in determining the total dollar amount when indemnities are paid. Report any sign of cholera.
INDEMNITIES. The state of Georgia is currently in phase three of hog cholera eradication, which provides for payment on dead, sick, or non-salvable swine from the time cholera is diagnosed and confirm ed by a laboratory as being on your farm. Indemnities are paid on a matching basis by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
Animals which are al ive and account-

ed for on the initial investigation by the state inspector or federal inspector are the only animals for which indemnity can be paid when confirmed hog cholera cases are found. Therefore, it is to the owner's advantage to have the inspector on his farm as soon as possible even while waiting for laboratory reports on specimens submitted for diagnosis. Indemnities can be paid on unvaccinated swine if cholera occurs.
GOOD MANAGEMENT. 1. Isolation of newly purchased swine is a recognized safeguard against spreading hog cholera and other diseases. Isolation can prevent loss of farmers' profit.
2. Dry, clean, wind-protected sleeping facilities reduce the chances of sickness in hogs. Colds and pneumonia as well as cholera occur in unprotected swine more frequently than in hogs provided clean, dry, protected facilities. Sanitary quarters increase profits. __ 3. Feeding and watering areas should

be close together enough to encourage hogs to take more of both. More feeding and watering facilities per hog may mean big differences at market time.
4. Successful hog farmers use many methods to produce better swine (and avoid hog cholera); all successful farmers use generous amounts of common sense which includes seeking professional help from veterinarians and county agents.
