NUMBER 50
Select Disease Resistant
Tobacco Varieties For '69
by Robert L. Miles
Extension Agronomist - Tobacco
In a very short time Georgia tobacco growers will have to make an important decision, that of selecting the variety of tobacco that will be grown on their farm in 1969. A great deal of thought should be given by each Georgia tobacco producer to the selection of variety.
For many years, Georgia tobacco growers have grown primarily the old line or similar varieties (Hicks and White Gold). Varieties such as McNair 30, McNair 20 and NC 2326 are very close to the Hicks and White Gold varieties.
These varieties (Hicks, White Gold, McNair 30, McNair 20, and NC 2326) are recommended for use in Georgia. They will produce tobacco that is acceptable to both the domestic and export buyers.
Horse Show Edition Coming January 8
On January 8, 1969, the Market Bulletin will carry a listing of horse shows and sales planned for Georgia during January, February, and March.
If you would like a notice printed in the Special Horse Show Edition, please have it at the Market Bulletin office no later than December 30. Any notices received after December 31 cannot be published.
Disease Resistance
Because of the disease condition on some farms in Georgia, it is necessary to select a variety of tobacco that is disease resistant. Black shank is the disease which most concerns growers today. If a disease resistant variety must be used in black shank infested areas, a high resistant variety should be selected, such as McNair 20, or Coker 80-F.
Where Fusarium wilt is a problem, a variety such as NC 2326 should be used since it has high resistance to wilt.
Generally, Georgia tobacco g rowers should continue to grow the old line varieties until such time there is a change in the buying pattern.
This is true for two reasons: 1. Georgia tobacco growers continue to enjoy the best position at the market place of any flue-cured tobacco producing group. 2. Georgia growers know how to handle the old line varieties, and therefore stand less chance of being economically hurt because of some peculiar characteristic of a new variety.
Produce Own Plants
Each year there are a number of growers in Georgia that rely on someone else to produce their tobacco plants. This is a big mistake in most cases. Some growers purchase out of state plants presenting disease and unknown-variety problems. With an income of 1200-1800 dollars per acre expected from tobacco, growers should not take a chance of getting tobacco plants that are diseased.
For best results, notices should be listed separately and should include the following items in this order: (1) date, (2) time, (3) name of event, (4) very brief description of activities, (5) sanctioning organization or association, if desired, (6) location, (7) name, phone, and address of person who can give additional information.
Word limit is 40 words per announcement. Signature of person responsible for the notice must be on the post card. Address the notice to: Horse Show, Market Bulletin, Agriculture Building, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia 30334.
Georgia tobacco growers spend thousands of dollars for tobacco seed annually with the expectation of a good return. Tobacco growers, before purchasing an ounce of seed, should know everything possible about the seed. The word "resistant" alone does not have any real meaning. If it is stated that a variety of tobacco is resistant, then a grower should find out the disease it is resistant to and what level it carries.
If tobacco growers have a problem or need information concerning any area of tobacco production they should contact their County Agent.
Guessing can be expensive.
