WEIGHTS and MEASURES
A SERVICE OF GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT THE INTERESTS OF BUYERS AND SELLERS
OF COMMODITIES.
WEIGHTS AND MEASURES WEEK, MARCH 1-7
Georgia consumers and merchants were saved over a quarter of a million dollars last year by the services of the Weights and Measures Division of the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
This week, March 1-7, has been named National Weights and Measures Week to commemorate this unique and valuable public service of checking and adjusting scales, wherever there is buying or selling of stated quantities.
The job of the weights and measures officials is to watch over, supervise, and test the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices used in trade and to spottest the quantities of packaged goods.
The value of the service in dollars and cents is tremendous. Last year, consumer savings in Georgia on scales found in error amounted to approximately $128,700. Errors found in pre-packaged items amounted to almost $5,000. But weights and measurers inspectors protect not only the buying public; they also protect the financial state of retailers, processors, and producers who sell by weight.
An average overweight of only 1 per cent because of an obsolete or out-ofbalance device can literally put a man out of business. Last year, the Weights and Measures Division found errors which would have cost businessmen about $125,4QO.
In other words, this service is to protect both buyers and sellers from bad weights and measures.
Throughout the United States, because of effective weights and measures laws the first passed by Congress was 168 years ago on Maijch 2, 1799 the buyer and the seller are equally protected. The weights and measures inspectors of the Georgia Department of Agriculture see to the correctness of weights and measures under these laws.
Today, correctness of weighing and measuring are taken for granted, whether in buying or selling potatoes, milk, cotton, or beef cattle.
