NUMBER 47

HUNTING SAFETY

By George T. Bagby, Director State Came & Fish Commission
Georgia has already record ed four hunting accident fata lities this year. All four deaths resulted from accidental dis charge due to carelessness with a loaded gun.
Last year five persons were killed in Georgia hunting accidents, and seven more were wounded.
Three of the five fatalities last year occured because of stumbling. Two hunters shot themselves, while another shot a fellow hunter after falling down. The fourth shot another hunter while taking a loaded gun out of a car, while only one fatality happened when one hunter mistook, another hunter for game.
Figures compiled by the Commission over the last ten years show that there is little reason to believe that hunting with high-powered rifles is any more dangerous than shotgun hunting, especially in counties where deer hunting is allowed.
The 10-year figures showed that 62 per cent of the fatal hunting accidents involved shotguns, while only 14 per cent i n v o Iv e d high-powered rifles. Twenty-four per cent in volved .22 rifles. Many of the cases involving high velocity rifles were cases of hunters stumbling and shooting them selves or someone else.

Indications are that with the shotgun, the chances of a hunter being wounded or killed in an accident are actually greater because of the greater number of pellets in a shotgun shell and the wider area over which they spread out when fired as compared to the small area covered by a rifle bullet.

pared to driving on the high way, hunting is a much safer activity.
We had more than a quarter of a million hunters last year with five fatalities, while a million and a quarter licensed drivers caused more fatalities

than that practically every weekend of the year. If the ratio of accidents was the same, we would have had 150 people killed in hunting acci dents, instead of only five. This is the reason we want to make every possible effort to keep hunting as safe as it is.

Although the rifle bullet can travel further than a shotgun pellet, including buckshot, it seldom does under normal hunting conditions, even in flat areas like South Georgia, where it is difficult to fire through the trees for 100 yards without striking a tree.

Balistics experts point out that the high velocity rifle bul let with the soft point required for deer hunting tends to easily splatter apart after striking a twig or a limb, while the slow moving, heavy shotgun slug or buckshot pellets tend more readily to bore on through dense undergrowth to strike their target. Thus a misdirect ed shot or a "sound shot" made at a noise in the bushes could be more dangerous with a shotgun than with a rifle. In the many cases where a hunter shoots himself or someone else at short range, the shotgun is even more destructive.

As safety experts of the Na

The m<>st common cause of hunting accidents in Georgia is simple

careless handling of a loaded gun, such as crossing a fence,

It is worth noting that com- stumbling, or taking a loaded gun out of a car or truck.
