Historically, grades of cotton have been recorded by abbreviations or symbols such as "MID" for Middling or "SLM" for Strict Low Middling. These symbols appear in the grade box on the green Form 1 cards.
Staple lengths have been shown bv recording "1-1/16" or "1-1/32", as the case might be, in staple box on the green Form 1 cards.
As a step toward automation of paper work, the Consumer and Marketing Service is changing to a system of codes whereby the grade of Middling will be represented by the code 31. The staple length "1-1/16" inches will be represented by the code 34.
See chart entitled "Codes For Grades and Staples of Upland Cotton" for a listing of classifications and the corresponding code number.
The crop year of 1967 will be a transition period from the recording of grade and staple information by symbols to that by code. During this year, both symbols and code will appear on the Form 1 cards.
Illustrated on the right is a sample of the old method, of the 1967 transition period, and of the new method to be used after 1967.
fhe National Association of State Departments of Agriculture is holding its national convention this year in Atlanta, Oct. 1-5.
