Time To Plan
Winter Grazing
Now is the time to make plans for winter grazing, according to the Extension Service agronomy department at the University of Georgia. In order to have fall grazing, land should be broken in August and then harrowed into a good seed bed.
Soil tests should be taken to determine lime needs. Lime is essential to high yields of quality grazing. Lime supplies calcium essential to livestock development. Lime also corrects the acidity and regulates the pH for optimum growth of winter grazing crops.
"Now is also the time to buy high quality seed. It is impossible to make seed oats out of feed oats. Buy only recommended varieties of known origin or purity," J. R. Johnson head of the department said.
Check the germination. Four bushels of oats, or 2 1/2 bushels of rye or wheat per acre is enough to get a good stand if the seed is high in germination at least 85 per cent. Otherwise the seeding rate will have to be increased, which will cost money.
Be sure to read the seed tag and do not buy seed of inferior quality with weed seed present. If small grains are planted containing weed seed, the eradication costs to free the fields of these weeds may be very costly, the Extension specialist pointed out. So the cheapest seed is weed-free seed.
Winter grazing planted early will provide high amounts of cheap protein in fall. Winter grazing planted late will not provide grazing in fall.
Good planting dates are September 1 in the Piedmont and September 15 to October 15 in the Coastal Plain. Winter grazing should be seeded the middle of August in the mountains.
