RUSSELL ANNOUNCES RECOMMENDED FIRE ANT FUND INCREASE
The Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee has approved $8 million for the fight against fire ants in the southeastern states, Georgia's senior senator Richard Russell announced last week.
A member of the subcommittee, Senator Russell said the full Senate Appropriations Committee is expected to consider the fire ant control funds, among other agriculture appropriations, soon, possibly this week.
The $8 million figure is a decided increase over the President's 1968 budget which called for $3,341,600 and a substantial increase over the House budget
which raised the fire ant appropriation to the 1967 figure of $5,388,600.
The 1967 Georgia Legislature approved a $1,000,000 appropriation for the fight against fire ants in Georgia. The imported pest has plagued Georgians, especially in the southwest section of the state, for several years now attacking people and livestock and making some fields impossible to farm.
People in the fire ant infested area of Georgia should be grateful for Senator Russell's continued support and assistance in the fire ant eradication program. Without his work the fire ant program would have been abandoned by the federal government.
