FREEMAN COMING TO GEORGIA
Farmers Invited To Discuss
Farm Policy And Planning
With USDA Secretary
Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman will be in Athens, Georgia, May 22 for a "shirtsleeves" farm policy meeting and discussion.
Georgia farmers and farm leaders are invited to attend the informal discussion with the Secretary at the University Coliseum at 9:30 a.m.
Farmers will be asked for advice and counsel on farm programs and the direction future decisions should follow.
Farmers from Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and Kentucky will be attending the Athens meeting.
The same afternoon, the Secretary will hold a similar meeting in Alexandria, Louisiana.
Secretary Freeman said the meetings are a continuation of the series held in Hutchinson, Kansas; Ames, Iowa and Decatur, Indiana, in April.
"In this critical time of transition for agriculture and farm programs, the planning we do now will have a real impact on the future. I am seeking help from the people who are living the experiences that are so often put before me in the form of tables and charts," Secretary Freeman said.
"In the first three meetings I got advice on the problems facing wheat, feed grain, soybean, dairy, and livestock producers. I expect to gain firsthand knowledge from cotton, tobacco, peanut, rice and sugan cane growers that I could not obtain in the Midwest," he said.
"With the help of farmers and their leaders, I think we can improve our programs and administration so as to maintain the upward movement of farm income and to minimize the danger of price-wrecking surpluses."
The first part of each meeting will be devoted to statements and questions by the invited leaders. Following this part of the program, Mr. Freeman will welcome written questions directly from the general farm audience. These questions will be answered without prior screening.

World Cattle And Hog Numbers At Record High
World cattle and hog numbers reached all-time record highs at the beginning of 1967, according to data compiled by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service. Cattle numbers totaled 1.14 billion head, up 1 percent from the previous high set in 1966, and 17 percent above the 195660 average.
The reason for the increase is gains in cattle numbers in the U.S.S.R., Eastern Europe, and in Oceania. U.S.S.R. cattle numbers totaled 97.1 million head, up 4 percent from a year earlier. Eastern Europe's total, at 34.8 million, was up 2 percent; while Oceania's total, at 26.1 million, was up 3 percent from a year ago.
Meanwhile, hog numbers, which set a record high for the third straight year, totaled 498 million head. That's up 2 percent from the 1966 total, 16 percent above the 1956-60 average. The major gains: North America's total, at 73.6 million, was up 7 percent; Eastern Europe's, at 50.1 million, was up 6 percent.
