By JIM L. GILLIS, JR. Chairman, State Soil and Water
Conservation Committee
The theme of Soil Stewardship Week this year is "Three-fourths of Our Land." This refers to the fact that of approximately 2 billion acres of land in the 48 contiguous states of pur nation, nearly one and one-half billion acres are privately owned.
The welfare of all Americans is affected by the manner in which this vast property is managed. It is the land on which food is produced. It is the land where we can add to the supplies and quality of water; where most of our timber will be grown; where most of our outdoor recreation needs can be met; where most of our wildlife will be produced.
There can be no separation of man from the land. His whole existence is tied to the soil from the beginning of his days to the time his body is committed to the earth from which it came. From the busiest corner of Atlanta to the widest country fields, human livelihood is a product of the soil.
For these reasons it is appropriate that a week has been set aside when we can reaffirm the need to preserve and improve our God-given natural resources.
The Chairman of the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee urges all citizens of Georgia to cooperate in every way possible to make Soil Stewardship Week a meaningful occasion and not just a gesture.
The State Committee invites you to join with the State's 27 Soil and Water Conservation Districts to help protect the land, reduce erosion and water pollution, improve recreational opportunities, and beautify the countryside. Districts need the help of everyone in this responsibility.
The farmlands of Georgia are its most vital, most precious resource. In their wise use and maintenance lies not only the future of the land, but, in the final analysis, the future of the state itself and its people.
