NEW PUBLICATION CITES SOYBEANS IN GEORGIA
With well over 500,000 acres, this will be Georgia's biggest soybean year, and it looks like each succeeding year will be bigger. University of Georgia Extension Service agronomists and county agents are encouraging farmers to plant soybeans to the tune of a million acres by 1970.
To assist these farmers with their 1970 goal, J. R. Johnson, head of the Extension agronomy department, J. E. Jackson and W. H. Gurley, Extension agronomists, have prepared a new publication entitled, "Soybeans in Georgia."
One unique feature of the soybean plant, according to the Extension agronomists, is that it can obtain most of its requirement of nitrogen from the air. This is because it is a leguminous annual plant. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria live in nodules on roots of legumes, they explained.
For a more detailed explanation of this remarkable bean, including recommended cultural practices, production, marketing, fertilizer, weed and insect control and harvesting, obtain a copy of "Soybeans In Georgia" at local county Extension Service offices.

NUMBER 16
FEWER FARM WORKERS;
BUT PRODUCTION RISES
The number of people employed on Georgia farms is going down, according to figures released this week by Paul C. Bunce, Extension market information and outlook specialist at the University of Georgia.
At the same time, however, labor costs on farms are up and are expected to continue in that direction.
Mr. Bunce said farm employment in the state was down to 139,000 in 1965 and the number last year was 14 per cent below this.
Farm operators and members of their families who worked on farms in 1966 totaled 90,000 11 per cent fewer than in 1965. The number of hired workers was down by 24 per cent to only 29,000.
Nevertheless, a sharp rise in labor costs is in prospect for this year and the next two years. The reason, according to Mr. Bunce, is the fact that the minimum wage now applies to some farms. "Because of competition for the limited supply of labor," he explained, "wage rates are likely to be near the required minimum even on farms not covered by the law."
For the nation as a whole, farm employment has been declining recently by about 200,000 each year. The number working on U. S. farms was down to 4.3 million in 1966.
"The fact that fewer and fewer people are required to work on farms is evidence of the increased efficiency of American farmers," according to Mr. Bunce.
Today, for example, one farm worker produces enough food and fiber for himself and 37 other people. As recently as 1950, one farm worker could feed and clothe himself and only 15 others. In 1940 the number was ten; in 1900, seven.
