VOLUME 52_______________________Wednesday, November 9, 1966___________________________NUMBER 63
ERADICATE HOG CHOLERA NOW

Confirmed hog cholera outbreaks in Georgia are presently at a low level. During the period from July to September there were only 6 suspected cases of cholera in the state and only 167 in the United States.
These 1966 figures show vast improvement over the 1965 figures for this same period, when 47 cases in Georgia were reported and 230 cases nationally.
Now, while cholera is at a low level, is the time for farmers to increase their diligence in watching and reporting. It is extremely important that all suspected outbreaks be reported immediately so that infected animals can be destroyed before the disease has a chance to spread.
Remember, hog cholera can appear in many forms. It may imitate other diseases and the usual signs of cholera are not always present. Therefore, hog farmers should report ANY sign of sickness in pigs to a veterinarian or their county agent immediately.
The target date for a "hog cholera free" United States is 1972. It is possible for Georgia to reach this status next year if our good record continues. However, this can only be accomplished with the assistance of every Georgia hog farmer.

FIRE ANTS IN GEORGIA

INFESTED
AREAS TREATED OR BEING TREATED

The above map shows the areas in Georgia infested with fire ants and the areas that have been or are being treated for fire ants. Federal funds for fire ant eradication programs have been increased this year from $3,300,000 to $5,300,000. If the Georgia legislature will increase funds from the present $600,000 to $1,000,000, an estimated
two million dollars in federal funds would be forthcoming. This would give Georgia a three million dollar fire ant program rather than the current 1.2 million dollar program and speed up fire ant eradication. The imported fire ant with its fiery sting and huge mounds creates a health menace and makes operating farm machinery virtually impossible.

TIMBER PRODUCTION
USES STRANGE MATH
Twelve is twice as much as ten is strange arithmetic but a fact in timber production.
C. Dorsey Dyer, head of the University of Georgia Extension Service forestry department, explained it this way: "The average tree that is iO inches in diameter will contain about 45 board feet of lumber; the average 12-inch tree will contain approximately 90 board feet."
Actually, Mr. Dyer continued, the 12inch tree is worth more than twice as much as the 10-inch tree. He pointed out that in the larger tree there are wider boards of higher quality, and that logging and processing costs go down as tree size goes up.
The Extension forester cited this "new timber math" to call attention to the need for, and the profit in, growing more Georgia trees to larger sizes. He said larger trees are needed for the sawtimber industry and the promising new pine plywood industry.
Under good management programs, according to Mr. Dyer, the 10-inch tree will grow an additional two inches in 5 to 10 years, depending upon the quality of the woodland soil. "If the two-inch increase is made in 5 years, the tree is earning its owner an annual compound interest rate of 14.9 percent," he said. "If the 10-inch tree makes it to 12 inches in seven years, the interest rate earned annually over the seven-year period is 10.4 percent. Even if it takes 10 years to add two inches, the annual interest rate earned is 7.2 percent."
Mr. Dyer said, of course, that all 10-

inch trees cannot be kept. "Good growth rates cannot be maintained without regular thinnings in the timber stand, and some 10-inch trees have to be cut when
thinnings are made." He declared, however, that it is impor-
