THE MARKET BULLETIN
ACID SOILS COST $42 MILLION ANNUALLY
Acid soil conditions cost Georgia farm ers an estimated $42 million a year in re duced crop yields.
This estimate is based on recent Uni versity of Georgia research that showed substantially increased crop yields in fields where soil acidity had been cor rected by the use of lime.
Cotton yields have been increased 128 pounds per acre following lime applica tion. After deducting the prorated cost of the lime this production increase meant $42 more income per acre over non-limed plots.
Similar results held true for peanuts. Use of lime increased yields 236 pounds per acre and boosted income $23 over plots that had not been limed.
Lime also pays on pastures. Correcting soil acidity with lime increased beef cat tle gains by 70 pounds per acre in one ex periment.
These yield increases were obtained on land that was not extremely acid. The soil pH before liming was 5.6, only slight ly below the desired level for optimum production.
Major concern is for extremely acid soil, with a pH of 5.0 or below. Such con ditions have occurred on some Georgia farms and yields were drastically re
duced -- even on fields that had been heavily fertilized. Under such acid con ditions, crops are incapable of proper growth and production, no matter how much commercial fertilizer is applied.
Farmers who fertilized heavily this year, and yet got less than top produc tion, should check to see if soil acidity is the problem. This problem can be avoid ed with next year's crops by having a soil test made this fall and applying needed lime. For crops to obtain maximum ben efits, lime should be applied at least two or three months before planting.
