STATE COTTON QUALITY LOW

TEXTILE MILLS REFUSE
MOST OF GEORGIA CROP
By GEORGE H. KING Executive Secretary
Agricultural Commodity Commission for Cotton
Statistics show that Georgia cotton has the poorest spinning quality of that produced in any cotton state.
Less than 30 percent of the cotton produced in Georgia is sold to the textile industry. Most of the state's annual cotton crop, better than 70 percent, remains in government loan.
Of the 846,000 bales of cotton produced in one neighboring state during 1965, some 602,000 bales were sold at prices higher than the government loan price. At the same time, of the 561,580 bales of cotton produced in Georgia, only 167,900 bales were sold at prices higher than the government loan price.
The story that the statistics tell is appalling. Especially in recognition of the fact that Georgia textile mills use more than one and one-half million bales of cotton a year, the vast majority of which comes from other states. Why should cotton grown in Georgia, literally in the shadows of textile mills, not be used by Georgia mills?
Dr. Robert Anderson, cotton economist of the University's Georgia Experiment Station, recently made a survey of 41 textile firms in Georgia. He found that since 1950, 14 of the firms had stopped using Georgia cotton completely, and 18 had reduced their purchases. Thus, of the firms surveyed, 78 percent had stopped or reduced cotton purchases from Georgia. Why?
Dr. Anderson asked why and received a number of reasons. The leading criticism was the low strength of Georgia cotton. Mills test the strength of cotton. For most of the mills a breaking strength of 77,000 pounds per square inch is the minimum acceptable. In the past few years, Georgia cotton has averaged far below this minimum. Most of the mills feel that 80,000 psi should be the aim of Georgia's cotton industry.
To secure a stronger cotton is a job for the breeders. Realizing the importance of strength, cotton breeders are working on this problem. Within a few

years, strong fibered cottons with relatively high yields will be available. In the meantime, much can be done with the varieties which we have to make the cotton more desirable to the mills.
It is going to take concerted action on the part of all to do a better job with what we have. Here are some things the farmers can do to improve quality:
1. Control late season weeds and grass to prevent grassy bales.
2. Provide adequate turn rows for mechanical pickers 25 to 30 feet wide.
3. Continue a good insect control program until the top crop is mature.
4. If boll rot is no problem, wait until 75 percent of crop is open to defoliate. Top bolls should be firm.
5. Don't pick wet cotton. Moisture is the greatest enemy of quality cotton.
6. Don't mix wet and dry cotton in the same trailers.
7. If you are having your cotton picked by contract, reserve the right to say when picking can start.
8. Don't ask your ginner to over-dry or over-clean. These practices reduce fiber strength and cause too many short fibers. Strict low middling will bring more money per bale than middling when the middling fiber has been over dried.
9. Remember that your ginner cannot produce a quality cotton bale unless the cotton is in good condition when brought in.
The ginner has a great responsibility and should work closely with his customers by:

MOLDY CORN HURTING MANY HOG FARMERS
By DR. JAMES G. MILLER Head, Animal Disease Department Coastal Plains Experiment Station
Moldy corn is causing severe problems for many swine growers in south Georgia according to findings of our veterinary investigation laboratory here at Tifton.
Normally farmers do not run into problems with moldy corn until later in the fall during hogging off time.
The current problem is attributed to the fact that some farmers have tried to use old corn in pushing their hogs for market while others, using bulk feeds, are failing to clean bins and feeders properly before refilling.
In many instances grain or feed residues left in bins or feeders get damp and moldy and contaminate supplies of new feed.
Some farmers have experienced swine mortality because of moldy feed. In most instances moldy feed causes liver damage in swine, making them lose weight and do a poor job of feed conversion.
Farmers should make sure that corn and other feeds used in their swine operations have not become soured or molded. Unless precautions are taken against such feeds many hog farmers stand to lose money on their swine operation.
COTTON HEARING SET FOR THURSDAY A.M.
A public hearing will be held in the House Chamber of the State Capitol at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, September 1, in regard to a proposed Cotton Research and Promotion Order for upland cotton.
The Cotton Research and Promotion Act, which would be implemented by the order, requires' hearings and producer approval in a referendum for the collection of $1.00 per bale assessments from upland cotton producers for cotton research and promotion.
Under terms of the Act collections from any producer who did not wish to contribute would be refunded upon written application.

The warehousemen also have a responsibility in seeing that Georgia cotton of quality moves into the market. Although it is bad, the quality of Georgia cotton should not be judged entirely by the amount remaining in the loan. There is still salable cotton in many Georgia ware-

fees. Commodities are produced to sell and not to store permanently. Where quality cotton is produced, the warehousemen can assist greatly in seeing that it goes to the market and does not remain in the loan.
The mills, too, can play an important role. They should realize that Georgia farmers are making an effort to improve the quality of their cotton. Where this is achieved, Georgia mills can help the farmer and themselves by buying cotton

produced near them. "Hurry" is a great enemy of cotton at
harvest time and effects quality. This year the August estimate of Georgia's cotton crop is only 380,000 bales. With just as many pickers as last year, with just as many trailers, and almost as many gins, each bale should be handled with "tender loving care". Economists predict that quality cotton of the 1966 crop will sell above the loan. Every effort should be made to secure quality. If all farmers, pickers, ginners, warehousemen, and mills cooperate, more Georgia cotton should move into the market.
