NEW TOBACCO SALES PLAN
GROWERS MUST OBTAIN
ASC MARKETING CARD
BY WILLIAM H. BOOTH
ASCA STATE DIRECTOR
A new system of identifying marketing of flue-cured tobacco will be put into effect beginning with the 1966 crop. A plastic, embossed marketing card similar to credit cards will be used by growers this year.
Under the acreage-poundage program, marketing cards must be presented at the warehouse when the tobacco is weighed in and must be left in the custody of the warehouse until payment is made or tobacco is removed from the warehouse by the grower. Tobacco auction warehousemen are prohibited from accepting producer tobacco for auction without marketing cards. The embossed card will be used to imprint identifying data on the warehouse records. In the past this was handwritten by the warehousemen. The card will be returned to the grower after the sale, along with his check in payment for the tobacco.
New plastic marketing cards have been furnished Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service County Offices in the tobacco producing area for delivery to growers.
Marketing cards will be delivered to growers in person at local ASCS County Offices except when requested in writing by the grower.
Operators of tobacco farms should visit their ASCS County Office and obtain marketing cards early to avoid delay when tobacco is weighed in at the warehouse. The number of marketing cards needed will be determined by the conditions undr which tobacco is marketed. Conditions to be considered are (1) the number of producers on the farm who may mjed a separate marketing card, (2) the anticipated number of sales, and (3) whether tobacco will be placed on a different warehouse floor while the marketing card is in the possession of a warehouseman pending sale of tobacco previously placed on his floor.
If there is a real need for more marketing cards, growers should request additional cards from their local ASCS County Office.
CALENDAR
July 19--"Container Nursery Production" Short Course to be held at A. Baldwin Agricul tural College, Rural Life Bldg., Tifton. Reg istration at 9:15 A.M.
Ju'y 26--Swine Field Day and Short Course to be held at A. Baldwin Agricultural College, Rural Life Building, Tifton. Registration at 9:15 A.M.
Marketings from a farm in 1966 may exceed the farm's quota by ten percent without being subject to penalty. A marketing penalty will be assessed on tobacco marketed in excess of 110 percent of the farm's quota. Overmarketings or undermarketings of the 1966 farm quota will be charged or credited to the tobacco quota established for the next year.
Experimental Machine
Combines Lint Operations
ARS agricultural engineers have developed a machine that could save time and labor for cotton farmers by doing five planting jobs at once.
The experimental machine prepares the seedbed; plants a given number of cotton seeds, precisely spaced; sprayed to control soil insects and weeds, fertilizes; and applies a mulch to hold soil moisture near the seed all in one operation.
0. B. Wooten and F. E. Fulghum built their machine to combine jobs that formerly required separate trips through the field. Although the machine is still being tested and not available commercially, they believe it could be adapted for use by farmers.
CURRENT PIG CROP LARGEST SINCE '63
The U. S. 1966 pig crop will not only be well above last year's, but will be the largest since 1963 (if farmers carry out their June-November intentions) according to the USDA's Crop Reporting Board. The reasons behind the forecast:
Though the total of 6.4 million sows that farrowed during December - May was only 8 percent above the same period last year, the number of pigs per litter was up (7.33 compared to 7.22). As a result, the December-May pig crop, at 47.0 million, was up 10 percent from a yearearlier (though 3 percent below that of 1964 and five percent below 1960-64).
But, breeding intention reports now indicate that a total of 5.7 million sows will farrow during June-November. This means the pig crop for the period is expected to total around 41.8 million head, up 10 percent from a year earlier, 3.2 percent above that for June-November 1964 and only 1.6 percent below the 196064 average for the period.
This in turn means the total 1966 (the year runs from December, 1965, through November, 1966) pig crop will run about 88.8 million head, which is up 10 percent from 1965.
New Handbook
On Insecticides
A new handbook issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture gives directions and precautions for safe agricultural and household use of more than 100 insecticides. Entitled "Suggested Guide for the Use of Insecticides to Control Insects Affecting Crops, Livestock, Households, Stored Products,,and Forest Products," Handbook No. 313 contains recommendations that take priority over those in USDA publications issued before February 1,1966. Copies may be obtained for $1.25 from the Superintendent of Documents, U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C. 20402.
