USE PESTICIDES SAFELY

KNOW YOUR PRODUCT,
FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS
This week's Market Bulletin article concern
ing the safe use of pesticides in agriculture
was prepared by C. R. Jordan, Head of the
Extension Entomology Department, University
of Georgia. The information contained in this
article is most timely and I recommend that
all farmers read it carefully.
PHIL CAMPBELL
There is no doubt that we have more and better pesticides today than ever before. Every person close to agriculture realizes that these chemicals are absolutely essential in order to produce food and fiber for our expanding population. Farmers would not be able to produce these necessary commodities without insecticides, fungicides, nematocides and herbicides to control insects, diseases, nematodes and weeds.
As the use of pesticides has expanded over the past 20 years, we have seen a steadily increasing number or regulations and restrictions in regard to the use of these essential chemicals. These "rules of use" are necessary to make sure that our food supply does not contain harmful quantities of pesticides and to protect fish, wildlife, soil, air and water from harm or contamination.
While a certain amount of regulation is desirable and necessary, too many "rules" can seriously interfere with a farmer's efforts to control harmful pests. The best way for us to avoid unnecessary regulation is for everyone to be sure to use pesticides correctly and safely. The responsibility for proper use of pesticides rests upon the user of pesticides.
Farmers and other users of pesticides should always keep the following points in mind:
1. Use only those pesticides that are recommended and labeled by a responsible agency for the job that you want to do. Some pesticides can be used on certain crops but not on others. The old practice of using "left-over cotton poisons" to dust vegetable crops, livestock or pastures can result in injury, death or serious financial loss. Since the tolerance for all pesticide residues in milk and eggs is zero, growers must

be especially careful about the chemicals that are used on animals and on feed crops. 2. Always use the recommended amount of the right chemical in the correct way. The old saying, "if a little bit is good, twice as much is better," is a very dangerous practice and must be avoided. Don't dust if the directions call for the use of granules. 3. Be sure to observe to the letter the time intervals before harvest. The recommended interval between the last pesticide application and harvest is based on the use of a certain amount of a particular chemical and on how long the chemical lasts. Cheating on these intervals will get you in residue trouble sooner or later. 4. Give pesticides a chance to do the job. Don't expect immediate results. Several days or longer are often required for a pesticide to do its work. Unnecessary, repeated applications are costly and add to the problem of residues.
Some pesticides should be applied only one time to a particular crop; others may be applied repeatedly throughout the season. Again, just be sure that you know what you are using and how to use it correctly. 5. Avoid drift of pesticides from one field or area to another. Drift is responsible for some of our most important residue problems. Great care must be taken to avoid drift of most pesticides into vegetable fields, orchards, pastures, forage crops, animal pens and homes. Fields that will require frequent applications of pesticides should be located as far as possible from areas where drift would cause a problem.
Another way to reduce drift is to use sprays rather than dusts whenever possible. In general, drift is less of a problem when ground equipment is used. Aircraft are necessary and desirable for certain' pesticide applications; but drift must be taken into consideration and avoided completely in some sit-
uations. Where drift cannot be avoided, it
will be necessary to use a pesticide

that is cleared for use on the crop or in the area which will receive the drift. (i. Keep in mind the crops which will be grown in a field in the future when you treat the soil with pesticides. Some pesticides last a long time in the soil and may cause damage or illegal residues in crops grown on the land several years later.
All producers of commodities for market should keep in mind that State and Federal agencies are constantly checking food and feed products to make sure that the food supply is safe for human consumption. These agencies are reluctant to condemn a farmer's produce but they are required to do so by law if excessive residues are found. Producers who violate the rules of safe pesticide use can count on being caught sooner or later! When this occurs, the producer usually sustains a very serious financial loss and, in some instances, criminal action may be instituted.
In most cases, pesticides are available to control harmful pests without damaging the crop ar causing illegal residues, if they are used correctly. Information on what pesticides to use, and how to use them effectively and safely, is available to everyone. It is the responsibility of the pesticide user to make sure that he has the latest information on the chemicals that he plans to use.

THE MARKET BULLETIN

JUNE 29. 1966

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1)
No one can remember all of the details about all of the pesticides and the rules and regulations regarding their use. For this reason recommendations for pest control and other information in regard to the safe use of pesticides is available from your local County Extension Agent's office. In addition to this, the County Agent is in direct contact with the Pesticide Information Center which
is maintained in the State Office of the

Cooperative Extension Service in Athens. This center is staffed by specialists who are qualified to provide information on the correct use of pesticides, regulations and restrictions governing the use of these materials, and how to handle, store and dispose of these chemicals safely.
Remember, it is the responsibility of the pesticide user to understand and follow the rules for safe and effective pesti-

cide use. Contact your County Extension
Agent for such information; read and follow the recommendations; study and observe the precautions on pesticide la-
bels. This could save your life or your bank account and will enable you to produce food and feed that is safe for human and animal consumption.
Let's all "play by the rules" so that we can continue to have the freedom to use pesticides wisely for the benefit of all concerned.

SOYBEAN OIL OUTPUT DOMESTIC USES HIGH
U. S. soybean oil production for 15)65-66 is estimated at a record 5.7 billion pounds, up 10 percent from the previous high of 5.15 billion pounds for 1964-65, according to the USDA's Economic Research Service. Despite the big increase, soybean oil exports are down 1/3 from a year earlier. The reason: Domestic disappearance is up. Domesticuses totaled 2.38 billion pounds during OctoberMarch compared to 2.0 billion pounds a year earlier and total domestic dissappearance of 1965-66 is expected to reach a record 4.4 billion pounds.
The reason for the increase in domestic uses: Consumption of soybean oil in shortening has been running 31 percent above a year ago, use in cooking and salad oils has been running 14 percent above a year earlier; and use in margarine has been running 11 percent above a year earlier. This situation reflects lower butter and lard output during this period.
