PEANUT PRICE SUPPORTS TOLD
$227 AVERAGE GRADE
TON FOR 1966 CROPS
Peanut prices will be supported at a minimum national average support price of $227 per average grade ton for the 1966 crop, according to Rufus Adams, Chairman, Georgia Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation State Committee.
This compares with the 1965 support of $224 per ton.
The support price for 1966-crop peanuts based on the minimum national support price will be Runner type $214.24 per ton, Southeast Spanish $231.98, Virginia type $239.86, and Valencia suitable for roasting $239.86. Information about values and discounts under the pricesupport program is available at ASCS county offices.
According to Adams, the advance minimum support is announced under "forward-pricing" provisions of legislation, which provide for announcement of the support price for field crops in advance of planting.
This national average support price will not be decreased, but may be adjusted upward at the beginning of the marketing year, August 1,1966, if at that time a combination of the parity price and the supply relationship results in a higher legal minimum support price. Any increase in the national support price would be reflected in the support price by types and areas.
Discounts for damaged kernels continue to be in keeping with the overall policy of encouraging farmers to produce and market high quality peanuts. One program change for 1966 is an increase in the discounts for sound split kernels in excess of 2 percent. Another change relates to the support price for individual lots of farmers stock peanuts containing mixtures of two or more types. Mixed lots in which there is less than 90 percent of any one type will be supported at a rate which is $10 less than the rate applicable to the type in the mixture having the lowest support price.
To be eligible for price support, a producer will need to keep within his farm's

peanut acreage allotment. Marketing quotas, which are in effect for 1966 crop peanuts, were approved by 97.5 percent of the growers voting in a referendum November 23, 1965.
The marketing agreement program, which regulates the quality of peanuts marketed by handlers for edible use, will be continued in 1966. Peanuts handlers who participate in the marketing agreement program and cooperate in making price support available to producers will be eligible to sell peanuts to CCC.
1967 NATIONAL WHEAT
ALLOTMENT INCREASED
The 1967 national wheat allotment has been set at 15 percent over 1966. This represents a regular allotment of 55 million acres plus small-farm increases to make an effective allotment of 59.3 million acres.
This means that most farm allotments for 1967 will be around 15 percent above 1966. However, the percentage may vary from farm to farm and between States and counties because of certain adjustments permitted under the Food and Agriculture act of 1965.
Further details of the 1967 wheat program, including the price-support loan level and marketing certificate allocation, will be announced shortly, but no later than June. Farmers can expect to have their 1967 farm allotment notices by July 1.
FREEZE BRANDING
FOR LIVESTOCK
A method of branding animals with intense cold rather than heat has been developed by ARS research veterinarian R. K. Farrell at Pullman, Wash.
The method, called "freeze branding," is painless to animals. For the livestock industry, it has the potential of reducing the damage to hides from hot branding, estimated at about $20 million per year.
Freeze branding, if successfully developed for commercial use, could also be used by pet owners to mark their animals to prevent theft; and by wildlife conservationists in life-cycle studies.
Working with scientists at Washington State University, Farrell has freezebranded' a wide variety of domestic, game, pet, and marine animals.
His technique involves applying material in the shape of the desired identification mark, chilled to an extremely low temperature, to the animal's skin. This kills the cells that produce pigment in skin and hair. When the brand thaws, hair falls out. New hair grows back, in about two or three weeks, is white since there is no longer any pigment to color it. There is no damage to the animal's hide.
Obviously, a white freeze brand shows up best on an animal with dark hair. A white animal can be freeze-branded, however, by leaving the chilled material on long enough to kill the hair roots. The resulting brand is similar to that made with a hot iron. In this case, the hide is damaged to some extent but much less than with a hot brand.
Since freeze branding is painless, the use of the technique makes animals easier to handle during branding. The white brand is particularly useful for spotting animals from a Jong distance. For that reason, Farrell reports, wildlife conservationists are interested in the possible use of freeze branding for following migrations from the air in life-cycle studies of such animals as seals, wolves, and caribou.
. Farrell has freeze-branded animals by

applying chilled metal, solid carbon dioxide (dry ice), and other material to the skin. The material used has little effect on the outcome as long as the skin is frozen correctly. Simplest and most economical, Farrell has found, is the use of
a copper brand, chilled in a bath of dry
ice and alcohol to -69 degrees F., and applied for 30 seconds.
The technique is still being improved, and isn't ready for commercial use. Farrell considers time and temperature important in freeze branding, since underbranding will result in no permanent
mark and overbranding causes perma-
nent loss of hair. He wants to find out
whether time and temperature "require-
ments vary with the season of year and with age, breed, and species of the animal.
