COTTON, PEANUT QUOTA VOTE
On November 23, 1965, cotton farmers and peanut farmers will be afforded the opportuni ty to vote in a marketing quota referendum on these two crops, Mr. Rufus Adams, Chairman of the Georgia ASC State Committee announces. It is extremely important this year that eligible producers of these crops go to the polls and cast their ballots in this referendum.
If cotton quotas are approved, eligible pro ducers will be provided price support loans, price support payments and diversion payments. If quotas are not approved, only price support at a reduced rate will be offered to cooperat ing producers. The new farm bill recently pass ed by Congress provides several choices to cot
ton producers which will vitally affect the farm ers' income as well as the economy of the coun try. All these hinge on whether or not quotas are approved.
Cotton producers wii! also be able to vote at the same time on whether or not to approve the sale of cotton allotments outside the coun ty.
The number of farmers who go to the polls and vote in this referendum will be an indica tion of the interest farmers have in their welfare and their support of farm programs which so vitally affect their livelihood.
On this same date, November 23, peanut growers will vote to decide whether quotas will be used in marketing their 1966, '67 and '68 crops.
Watch For Hog Cholera
DURING NOVEMBER OF 1964, GEORGIA EXPERIENCED AN OUTBREAK OF CHOLERA IN THE SOUTHEAST PORTION OF THE STATE THAT LED TO THE HIGHEST INCI DENCE OF CHOLERA WE HAD EXPERIENCED SINCE 1961.
AS HOG CHOLERA SEASON IS GENERAL LY THOUGHT TO BE THE SPRING AND SUM MER MONTHS OF THE YEAR, FARMERS OF TEN LET DOWN THEIR GUARD DURING THE FALL MONTHS. THIS WAS THE PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE AT THIS TIME LAST YEAR.
FARMERS ARE THEREFORE WARNED TO CHECK THEIR HOGS CAREFULLY DURING THE NEXT FEW MONTHS TO ASSURE AGAINST HEAVY LOSS FROM CHOLERA.
ONLY SEVEN CASES OF CHOLERA WERE REPORTED IN OCTOBER, 1965. WE CAN KEEP THIS GOOD RECORD IF ALL FARMERS WILL
(1) WATCH FOR SICK HOGS IN THEIR HERD,
(2) REPORT ANY SUSPICION OF CHOLERA
IMMEDIATELY AND (3) VACCINATE PREFER ABLY WITH KILLED VACCINE WHERE NO KNOWN INFECTION EXISTS IN YOUR AREA.

STORING PESTICIDES
With harvest time approaching, the use of pesticides is diminishing, and pesticide dealers and farmers will soon store their hold-over pesti cides for the winter. Pesticides should be stored so that they will not contaminate food, feed, or fertilizer.
Many dealers have customers with pesti cides on hand which they intend to carry over till next year. These customers should be cau tioned in the safe storage of such materials. Dealers should impress upon the customer that pesticides are toxic substances and that spe cial care should be exercised in handling and storing them. If a farmer has a product from which the label has been lost or one in a con tainer other than its original container, he should destroy it. Never keep a pesticide that does not have a complete, clearly legible label attached.
The following are some suggestions for safe storage:
l.Be sure that caps are tightened securely on all bottles and cans. Destroy leaky contain ers.
2. Do not store weed killers close to such materials as wettable powders and dust. Some weed killers, such as2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, are high ly volatile substances and can contaminate oth er materials.
3. Store wettabie powders, dusts, and gran ules of pesticide products in a cool dry place.
4. Do not store liquid pesticides in a place where the temperature will fall below 40 F. Too low temperature may result in a breakdown of liquid material, and, if the liquid should freeze, there is the danger that glass containers will break.
5. Do not carry over any pesticide products whose labels have been lost or are not com plete and legible.
6. Above all, keep pesticide materials in a locked room or cabinet and out of reach of children and animals.
7. Clearly Mark a!! areas where pesticides are stored.
