1964-65 Cropland Conversion SALES EVENTS
Program Announced by USDA
The 1964-65 Cropland Conversion Program will operate in designated test areas in a total of 101 counties in 36 states, according to a recent announcement by the Secretary of Agriculture. Designated counties in Georgia include Barrow, Gwinnett, Johnson and Washington.
First conducted on 3 trial basis in 1963, the program is designed to improve family farm income by helping farmers convert land now being used for the production of row crops and small grains which are in surplus to some other long-range incomeproducing use such as forests, grass, water storage, wildlife habitat, or recreational facilities. Field administration of the program is through ASC State and County Committees.
In announcing the program, Secretary Freeman said: "The Cropland Conversion Program is an integral part of the administration's efforts to increase income levels in rural areas. Converting land from the production of crops that are not now needed will increase farm income by helping to strengthen farm prices and by helping the Nation's farmers to develop more profitable uses for the land resources in rural areas."
W. H. Booth, Chairman, Georgia Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation State Committee, points out that the designated test counties were selected to provide a broad cross-section of experience with different types of farms, land, and craps, varying income levels, and different types of land-use adjustment opportunities. Variations of the program will be tried in 7 counties in an effort to determine its potential. Opening and closing signup dates for the program will be announced by the ASC County Committees.
Five-year agreements with eligible farmers in the designated counties who desire to participate will be based on farm conservation plans developed in cooperation with local soil conservation districts. Technical assistance will be provided by the Soil Conservation and Forest Services. In general, the program is open to any individual or group operating a farm in the test counties which has been under the same ownership for the last 2 years 1963 and 1964.

U. S. POULTRY OVERSEAS
Tunisian food buyers now have an American tradition available in their markets. The first shipment of 26,000 pounds of frozen U. S. chickens arrived there recently, a part of 132,000 pounds of U.S. Poultry Tunisia has contracted for under Title I, P. L. 480 for delivery before the end of the year. Elsewhere, the North Atlantic Freight Conference has just made permanent the lower shipping rates to Greece for U. S. poultry put into effect some two years ago for an indefinite period. At the request of the U. S. poultry industry, the Conference cut rates from about 10 cents per pound to 5 cents per pound. The immediate result was to make U. S. poultry highly competitive in the Greek market.

Help Seedlings Live
A lot of young pine seedlings that don't live after planting are actually dead before they are placed in the ground, according to Extension Service Forester George D. Walker. To prevent the seedlings from dying, he suggests placing them in a container of soupy mud as soon as they are removed from the shipping bundle. They also can be heeled-in in a bed and left there until ready to plant.

ATTENTION ADVERTISERS
Many of Your customers have written the Market Bulletin stating that they did not know they would have to pay postage on their orders until they arrived.
All advertisements that will be filled by mail order should state one of the following: 1. Postage paid (meaning that the advertiser will pay the postage); 2. Plus postage (mean-
ing that the customer will be required to pay postage), or 3. F. 0. B. (meaning this is the price if you come to my home to buy, otherwise shipping costs will be added.)
The Market Bulletin staff believes this will clear up many misunderstandings between customer and advertiser. Your cooperation is appreciated.
REMEMBER: FOR BEST RESULTS MAIL YOUR AD TO THE MARKET BULLETIN OFFICE 10 DAYS BEFORE YOU WANT IT TO APPEAR AS BULLETINS ARE PREPARED ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE OF PUBLICATION.
