PEACH PRODUCTS DEVELOPED
PEACH JUICE
AVAILABLE NOW
By PHIL CAMPBELL Commissioner of Agriculture
The Georgia peach industry is to be commended for the outstanding work it has done during the past two years in the research and development of new peach products.
An industry sponsored breakfast was held in Atlanta last week to discuss the results of research and the possibilities that lie ahead for the Georgia peach industry.
The peach industry has stayed in serious trouble off and on as there has been only one market for peaches the fresh market. Through research and the development of the new peach products, peach growers now have new outlets for their product. The citrus industry of Florida faced near bankruptcy during the 1920's for the same reason. The development of
new markets for the citrus growers helped solve the problems of their industry, just as it will for the peach industry.
Dr. J. G. Woodroof of the Georgia Experiment Station has been dedicated to the problems of the peach industry and to the task of developing new products for the peach industry. It has been through the leadership and financial assistance of the Peach Commodity Commission that much of the research has been possible.
Already, this research is paying off to peach growers, processors and to the entire Georgia economy.
It is estimated by one processing plant in Georgia that it processed about 75,000 to 100,000 bushels of peach during the past marketing season that would have been lost if not for the development of new products.
A new peach juice is now avavilable for marketing and many other products are in the final stages of development.
A new refrigerated jar of peach slices has been developed which comes as close as possible to looking and tasting like a fresh peach. In addition there is a new
peach concentrate that is receiving exc lent reception.
In the near future, the U. S. housewi will have available year round peach flakes, peach tarts, partially dehydrated peaches and new peach wine.
The benefits of this progressive approach by the peach industry will be reaped by many. The consumer will benefit by the availability of good peach products throughout the year as well as by a boost to Georgia's economy.
The grower will benefit by being able to sell more of his peach crop each year. The processor will benefit as new markets are opened to him.
Georgia's overall economy will definitely benefit from the added economy to the producer, the processor and the addition of new plants and employees.
It is heartening to see this progress being made and the delicious peach breakfast was a fine way to introduce the results of the endeavors of Dr. Woodroof, the Peach Commission and others who have worked to this end.
