WEIGHTS AND MEASURES WEEK
The Georgia housewife has something special to celebrate during National Weights
and Measures Week: She has saved money through the ef-
forts of the men the nation will honor dur-
ing the week of March 1-7. Georgia Department of Agriculture in-
spectors constantly watch over all scales on which consumer goods are weighed, and their efforts have paid off. During 1964 alone Georgia consumers were saved more than 171- thousand dollars through these
inspections.
But this was not a one-way street. The Georgia merchants also were saved 114-
thousand dollars.
The department has a division of weights and measures which has the fulltime job of regulating most of the public
and consumer weights and measures devices within the state.
Agriculture Department inspectors check out scales in large volume stores like supermarkets at least once every 90 days. Places they term "trouble stores" are visited more frequently. The small corner grocer is called on at least once a year.
In 1964 inspectors checked out 25,978 sets of scales in Georgia meat markets, and all but 711 sets passed inspection. Of the 1,166 sets of spring scales inspected (the type that may be used for fruits and vegetables, but not meats) only 71 sets were
condemned.
Pre-packaged meats also come under the department's scrutiny. Spot checks of 363-thousand packages were made during the year and 340-thousand of the packages
measured up to expectations. These packs included every type meat from chicken and chops to sliced luncheon meats.
But Agriculture Department inspectors checked other things, too. They checked vehicle scales, livestock scales, and the various type scales used by warehouses.
They measured farm milk tanks, and they measured retail milk bottles.
They checked the weights of contents in feed, seed and fertilizer bags.
In short, the men who were watching the state's weights and measures were watching the state's pocketbooks. 1964 was a good year, but the Agriculture Department is hoping the housewife will have even more to celebrate when National Weights and Measures Week rolls around again this time next year.
