NUMBER 26

HOG CHOLERA TROUBLE SPOTS

Since October 1, there have been 95 cases of hog cholera in Georgia. Most of these cases were isolated incidents easily cleared up. The main hog cholera trouble spots are confined to one area of Southeast Georgia, including Coffee County.

Coffee County has had 22 outbreaks since October 1, 1964. Surrounding counties of Irwin, Berrien, Atkinson, Bacon, Jeff Davis, Appling, Pierce, and Wayne have had a total of 35 cases during this same period.

The trouble is due to a limited number of people moving exposed and sick hogs through Georgia stockyards. This is in violation of State laws and regulations. All persons suspecting hog cholera should report immediately to their local veterinarian, County Agent, or the State Department of Agriculture. Under our state hog cholera indemnity program, the State pays for all hogs that die or are condemned due to cholera.

Shown below on the state map are the hog cholera, trouble spot counties.
