LIVESTOCK SURVEY

BEGINS THIS WEEK

Georgia's annual fall survey of the livestock industry will begin this week.
Conducted by the State Crop Reporting Service, with cooperation from rural mail carriers and approximately 12,000 farmers, the survey will determine how many beef cattle, milk cows, hogs, sheep, and chickens are on Georgia farms. How much milk the cows give and how many eggs the hens lay will also be answered.
Archie Langley, state statistician with the Crop Reporting Service, explained that the survey provides the basic information for livestock, poultry, and wool reports which are used by producers and marketing men to plan their year's activities.
The mail carriers, on their regular routes, will begin distributing the questionnaire cards to farmers on November 18 and 19. Farmers are encouraged to fill out the cards and return them to the mailmen as soon as possible.
Mr. Langley said a large response to the survey by producers will help insure more reliable livestock estimates for the coming year. He explained that the Georgia information will be combined with figures from the other states. The USDA Crop Reporting Board in Washington will use the totals as a basis for its report on the nation's livestock situation.
Farmers who return their survey cards to the mail carriers will receive a copy of the final report. Mr. Langley said others interested in obtaining a copy should write to the Georgia Crop Reporting Service, 315 Hoke Smith Annex, Athens.
