Cotton Makes Comeback; Agricultural
Yields To Reach 500 Ibs. CALENDAR
King cotton, deposed by the boll weevil and low yields a generation ago, is staging a comeback.
And its return to the throne of impor tance in the Georgia's agricultural economy is right on schedule with the timetable which its supporters set up for it in 1958.
At that time the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service announced the state agricultural program "What Can Be Done," and predicted it would increase farm income by $400 million a year by 1965.
The goal for cotton, which produced only 324 pounds of lint per acre seven years ago, was set at 500 pounds. Extension agron omists and county agents proposed to reach the objective by speeding research informa tion and recommendations to farmers and encouraging wider and faster adoption of improved practices.
The program would concentrate on ade quate use of fertilizer and lime, adequate control of weeds and insects, use of adapt ed and quality seed, and soil and water con servation.
Cotton got another boost in 1961-62 when the intensified "Profit Picking Cot ton Program" was initiated in 32 counties. This was to be an all-out effort to saturate the counties with the latest information on soil fertility, seed, weed control, insect con trol, and harvesting. The support of farm ers, bankers, ministers, teachers, civic lead ers, editors, farm supply and equipment dealers, and others would be enlisted to en courage application of the information in the cotton fields.
Twenty-four counties were added to the program in 1962-63, twenty-five more in 1963-64.
During the five-year period 1958-1962 the average cotton yield in Georgia climb ed from 324 pounds to 369. In 1963 a record high of 454 pounds was achieved, and the Georgia Crop Reporting Service has pre dicted this record will be broken this year. GCRS has estimated the 1964 yield at 472 pounds--18 more than last year and just 28 short of the goal set for 1965.
If the Crop Reporting estimate holds up, said Extension Service Agronomist James E. Jackson, Georgia will produce 615,000 bales of cotton this year. Based on the cur rent market, the value to Georgia farmers will exceed $105 million. And the total con tribution to the state's economy will be mul tiplied several times by the time the cot ton is processed into textiles, Mr. Jackson pointed out.

1965 AG. CONSERVATION
PROGRAM ANNOUNCED
The Agricultural Conservation Pro gram for 1965 will again encourage farm ers to shift from production of surplus crops to conserving land uses and to estab lish practices for conservation of soil, wa ter, woodland, and wildlife, where needed, according to W. H. Booth, Qhairman of the Georgia Agricultural Stabilization and Con servation State Committee.
The State has been allocated $7,125,000 in program funds this year to help carry out conservation practices on farms.
The Chairman explained that the local cost-sharing programs have been formu lated within the national program authori ty, to include practices which will best meet the conservation problems of the par ticular area. This is done annually by ACP Development Groups, composed of the ASC Committees, Soil Conservation Service technicians, and Federal Forest Service foresters advised by others with conserva tion interests.
As in previous years, farmer - elected ASC Committees will administer the pro gram and will relate it to work plans of local soil and water conservation districts. The Soil Conservation Service and forestry agencies are responsible for technical phas es of certain practices. A list of approved ACP practices--for which the program will again cover approximately half the cost--is available at ASCS county offices.
In announcing the national ACP for 1965--the 30th program year-- Secretary of Agriculture Freeman said: "This pro gram, which reaches into every State and agricultural county, is playing an increas ingly important role in our efforts to im prove rural areas--not only in their phy sical environment but also in their econom ic outlook. It is an important part of the on going war against poverty.
