CONGRATULATIONS EXTENSION SERVICE
On Fifty Years of Progress in Georgia
The Cooperative Extension Service in Georgia is 50 years old this year.
Its work during this half century is a unique story of achievement in education.
It is a partnership of local people and their organizations county, state, and federal governments and their land grant institution, the University of Georgia. This partnership finds root in the needs of the people at home and at work. It builds on a pooling of their common problems and the application of their own talents and resources to solve these problems.
Through local county agents and home demonstration agents, Cooperative Extension work has effected the lives of millions of Georgians during the past 50 years. Its distinction lies in its teaching methods, based on "showing" rather than "telling".
The Beginning Extension work in the state began in 1908, the year that the College of Agriculture of the University of Georgia was organized. In that year the General Assembly appropriated $10,000 to finance an agricultural train to visit every county which had a railroad. Some 500,000 people visited the train and benefited from better farming methods demonstrated.
Extension work in agriculture has come a long way since then. Extension recommendations, put into practice, have helped Georgia farmers turn farming into a highly
technical business. By adopting modern, re-
search-founded practices, these farmers are
realizing yields and income from crops and
livestock that just a few years ago were
considered impossible.
Despite population losses on Georgia's farms, agricultural production and income from farm marketings have risen sharply since the beginning of Extension work. Income in 1924 was $209 million. In 1957, the year before Extension's intensified agricultural program, "What Can Be Done," was launched, it was $634 million. By 1963 it had reached $858 million, an all-time record.
Home economics work began in an organized way in 1911, when the state's first home demonstration agents went to work in Clarke and Clayton Counties.
Since World War II, the expanding economy, technological advancements, and changing community patterns have had a vital impact on family living. New and complex problems have brought requests for new kinds of assistance from homemakers and their families.
Today they are receiving more help with family financial planning, family life problems, how to be a wise consumer, health and safety, management of time, energy and money, as well as keeping upto-date on feeding, clothing, and housing the family.
Four-H Work
Four-H work in Georgia, pre-dating the Cooperative Extension Service, began in 1905 with a boys' corn club. It expanded quickly to include girls' tomato and canning clubs. When the Extension Service was organized in 1914, there were some 20,000 boys and girls enrolled. In 1963, this enrollment had climbed to nearly 147,000, the highest in the nation.
With an increasing percentage of 4-H youth living in non-farm areas, Extension has broadened the range of its youth work. Emphasis is being placed now on activities that will benefit urban as well as rural residents.
Extension workers are keenly aware that the future of Georgia and this nation will continue to be one of rapid and dynamic change. To meet the challenges of these changing times, the Cooperative Extension Service will continually re-evaluate and re-design its educational programs in line with the needs and problems of the people.
The Extension Service will always hold high those objectives which assure a better life for everyone. In working to attain these objectives, the guiding principle of all Extension workers, as always, will be "helping people to help themselves."
Two Notices To Sweetpotato Growers
The Alabama Sweetpotato Weevil Quarantine prohibits the movement of Georgia sweetpotatoes into the state of Alabama from the following Sweetpotato weevil regulated counties:
Appling, Bryan, Chatham. Crisp, Decatur, Dougherty, Echols, Grady, Glynn, Lanier, Liberty, Lowndes, Mclntosh, Pierce, and Wayne
Sweetpotatoes grown outside the Sweetpotato regulated counties can be shipped or moved into the state of Alabama only when a valid green permit tag is attached to each container. The permit tags can be obtained by contacting:
Mr. T. J. Ratcliffe Georgia Dept. of Agriculture Division of Entomology P. O. Box 1-4 Tifton. Georgia
All sweetpotato plants, vines, or cuttings sold, offered for sale, given away, or otherwise distributed in the State of Georgia must by law, be certified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
Certification is for the purpose of preventing the spread of sweetpotato insects and diseases. If these were to become widespread, they could virtually eliminate the growing of sweetpotatoes in the state.
Persons desiring to have their sweetpotato plants certified should write the Division of Entomology and Plant Industry, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Capitol Square, Atlanta, Georgia, 30334.
APPLICATION FOR INSPECTION MUST BE RECEIVED BY AUGUST 15, 1964
