STONE MOUNTAIN CARVING
The future economy of the United States is going to be charted on the leisure time rather than on the working time of its citizens.
During the past half century the United States has experienced blessings that could be her undoing. Her population has expanded, her people are living longer and healthier lives and her industry and farming have become so efficient and mechanized that she requires fewer people for the production of the necessity items for living.
This has led the nation from a 70 hour working week to what is known as the 40 hour work week with most offices in big cities working less than 40 hours. The future certainly in-
dicates that it won't be long before we will have what is commonly known as a 30 hour work week.
Continuing on this trend, we can easily see how the off hours or leisure time of the people of this nation is going to affect the economy of our nation.
Georgia must, therefore, develop her natural resources if she intends to survive in the struggle that is developing to attract man during his surplus time when he spends his surplus money.
The continued development of Georgia's agriculture and of Georgia's industry will not
sufficiently give to Georgia her share of the national economy. Tourism must also be developed for Georgia's tourists and for those out o? state whom we would like to visit Georgia because of their spare time and their spare dollars.
There are many places in Georgia that could compete favorably with other places in the nation if they were properly developed for tourists.
The following article is the ninth in a series about Georgia's natural resources that are being or should be developed into recreational areas and tourist attractions.
All Georgians Invited To See Work Resumed On Mountain, July II
Ceremonies will be held at Stone Mountain Memorial Park this Saturday, July 11, at 2:30 p.m. to mark the resumption of work on the mammoth carving on the steep side of Stone Mountain. Governor Carl Sanders will lead the ceremonies and then issue a "begin work" order to the workmen who will be waiting 300 feet up the face of the mountain to start their torches.
More than 36 years have lapsed since the last work was done on the carving. All Georgians are now invited to visit Stone Mountain on July 11 and take part in this historic occasion to complete the memorial to the Confederacy begun more than a half century ago.
George Weiblen, who worked on the original carving, will be in charge of a

group of six men who will complete the work under the direction of Walter Hancock, famed Massachusetts sculptor, chosen in competition with eight other nationally known sculptors to complete the work.
Carving will be done with modern jet
torches that will burn a mixture of oxygen and kerosene and produce sounds similar to jet aircraft engines.
To watch this work on the carving, more than 300 feet up the side of the mountain, as high as a 33 story building, should be an exciting treat for young and old.
