Special Tobacco Meet
Planned For Douglas
Wednesday Morning
The U. S. Department of Agriculture has announced a series of meetings throughout the flue cured tobacco producing area to discuss all phases of tobacco.
The Georgia meeting will be held in Douglas, at South Georgia State College, on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The meeting will get underway at 9 a.m. and all Georgians having an interest in the flue cured tobacco industry are invited to attend.
The meetings will be conducted in the nature of forums participated in by all segments of the tobacco industry. Emphasis will be placed on continuation of the progress in improving market acceptability of U. S. tobacco. Other topics to be discussed will include various fields of research, supply and demand, world production and trade and efforts needed to recover that share of the world market formerly enjoyed by American tobacco.
Persons attending will be given the opportunity to ask questions.
Combine Soil Tesfs
And Excellent Seed
For Better Results
All Georgia farmers and gardeners should take advantage of the free soil testing service offered by the University of Georgia College of Agriculture.
The number of soil samples analyzed in Georgia jumped from 22,000 in 1957 to 44,000 in 1962 under the impetus of the Soil Fertility Program being conducted by the Extension Service, but many people are still not using the service.
A soil test tells how much available phosphorus and potassium there is in the soil and the acidity of the soil. With this information, county agents can recommend the necessary amounts of lime and fertilizer needed to supplement that already in the soil to produce the best yields.
Many Georgians who are taking advantage of the service are finding that it pays off in yields and income. For information on how to take a soil sample and where to send it, farmers and gardeners should contact their local county agricultural agent.

Figure The Live Seed Percentage

To Know Cost And Seeding Rates

Formula Can Guide
You To Save Money
Is there any such thing as buying seed at a "bargain" price? Certainly
there are times and circumstances when
you may save money buying seed to
plant a crop. At the same time, however,
bargain seed may cost far more than you
can afford to pay.
In buying seed you should not only read the seed tag and learn what you can about the quality of the seed, you should also consider the percentage of PURE LIVE SEED (PLS) in any lot of seed you buy no matter what the price.
From the information on the seed tag a little simple arithmetic will show you whether you are getting a bargain on a certain lot of seed or whether you would actually be better off buying other and possibly even more expensive seed.
The number of PURE LIVE SEED (PLS) you buy is the actual number of seed that will germinate and grow. To determine this percent of "pure live seed" or PLS you multiply the percent purity by the percent germination then point off two places. As an example, in a hundred pound bag of seed that shows 90%

purity and 80% germination the per-
centage of pure live seed or PLS is 90 x
80, or 72 percent of the lot of seed. This
means that only 72 pounds of the 100
pounds of seed is actually pure live seed
that can be expected to germinate.
Now if you want to figure what you
would be paying for the good seed if you
decide to buy, divide the percent of PLS (72) into the price per hundred pounds. Suppose the seed price was $8.00 per hundred; 8.00 divided by 72 gives you a price of about 11 cents per pound or $11 per hundred which you would actually be paying for the good seed in the lot.
By using this formula you can always determine the actual cost per pound of the pure live seed in any lot of seed and may well discover that the cheapest seed is not always the best buy.
As an example, study the chart to be found elsewhere on this page. You will note, high quality seed from Lot A is priced at $2.00 per hundred more than bargain priced seed in Lot B. Once you figure your percentage of pure live seed, however, the example demonstrates that a good crop stand would cost you less (exactly $1.33 per hundred pounds of

Figure The Live Seed
(Continued From Page 1 seed less) with the higher priced seed than with the bargain seed.
Not only does this formula give you

MARKET BULLETIN
a better idea of what you are getting for your money, but by figuring the percentage of pure live seed in any lot of seed you plant you will be better guided to the rate of seeding necessary for a good stand.

Wednesday, February 26. 1964
Pure live seed is seed that will germinate and grow. Taking the time to figure PLS will help you do a better job of buying seed and a better job of planting seed.
