`There is no such thing as a day off when it comes to biosecurity'
GDA, state, federal partners contain HPAI in Toombs County

By Amy Carter amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
A case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza detected May 30 on a hobby farm in South Georgia was largely contained within 48 hours. Georgia is now the 36th state to report an outbreak of H5N1 "bird flu" this year.
The arrival of warmer temperatures typically means a lowered risk of avian influenza infections, but a phone call to the state's Avian Influenza Hotline from the owner of a menagerie of birds in Toombs County signaled a change in the disease's pathways.
"In the past we had general rules that after we reach an average temperature of 65 degrees during the day, the virus
Dr. Louise Dufour-Zavala said the most common way avian influenza enters a chicken house or chicken coop is by way of humans walking it in. She said prevention is as simple as: 1. Maintaining a line of separation. Separate
what is outside the chicken house or the chicken coup or containment area from the inside where the birds are kept. A dedicated pair of boots or disposable boots to wear inside the house or coup will prevent tracking in the virus from outside. 2. Make sure dead birds are disposed of properly so as not to attract wildlife. 3. Control visitors to coups or chicken farms since, again, the virus is easily brought with two human feet into the bird space. Backyard or small flock keepers are urged to bring outside birds in, or to cover outdoor enclosures to minimize the risk of infection. is not as persistent, but of course it's 90 degrees in South Georgia (where Toombs County is located) and that's got everyone puzzled," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black. "That in and of itself presents a challenge to our team because there's no relaxation here. There is no such thing as a day off when it comes to biosecurity."
State Veterinarian Dr. Janemarie Hennebelle said all hobbyist flock owners should take a cue from the Toombs County grower.
"We really want to commend this flock owner because they noticed they had sick birds and they had some birds dying and they called, they called immediately, and that is really the backbone of what we need folks to be doing for any animal disease, not just Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza," Hennebelle said. "It's really that old adage if you see something say something. It's so clich but it's so true."
Avian influenza is carried by wild birds which aren't typically sickened by it but do shed the virus into the environment. Depending on the strain, it can be highly infectious and potentially deadly to commercial and domestic poultry. However, the latest strain is performing in unexpected ways, sickening wild birds and particularly raptors, including bald eagles, despite warmer temperatures.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture's multi-disciplinary State Agriculture Response Team deployed for the

The Georgia Department of Agriculture was preparing to reevaluate its suspension of poultry shows, exhibitions and sales when the Toombs County outbreak of HPAI was detected. State Veterinarian Dr. Janemarie Hennebelle said the suspension will stand for now.
"Having not had a detection here in Georgia in domestic poultry for many, many months, we were hopeful that we would be able to lift that suspension but obviously based on current events over the (Memorial Day) weekend this is not the right time to do that," Hennebelle said.
"We really want to encourage our small flock owners and commercial operators to maintain their vigilance. It's clear that the virus is still circulating in wildlife populations, and now we've had our domestic detection here in Georgia. We'll be reviewing the suspension every 30 days."
Toombs County emergency despite the holiday, working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Georgia Poultry Lab Network and the Toombs County Sheriff's Office to secure the farm, contain the virus by depopulating more than 350 chickens, turkeys, ducks and peafowl, dispose of the birds, disinfect the farm, and begin surveillance of every commercial and backyard flocks within six miles of the infected farm for signs of the disease. Samples collected to date have not found additional cases, and surveillance is ongoing. The DNR is investigating the deaths of several vultures, also reported by the Toombs County grower.
Although there is a very low risk of infection in humans, responders to the emergency observed biosecurity measures and will be monitored for signs of disease for several days by the Georgia Department of Public Health. Avian

Veterinary loan repayment application period is open for 2022

ATLANTA The Georgia Veterinary Education Loan Repayment Program is now accepting applications for Fiscal Year 20222023.
The 2022 Georgia General Assembly appropriated state funds totaling $90,000 to pay toward the student loan debt of veterinarians who commit to 12 months of food animal veterinary medicine in rural areas of need in the state.
The State Veterinary Education Board will contract with up to five eligible applicants in 2022 for award amounts of up to $18,000. Participants may reapply at the successful end of their contract, with a total of $80,000 in assistance possible from the program.
Each applicant is required to submit a completed application form and the appropriate reference documents to the veterinary education board by no later than Aug. 1, 2022. Completed applications must be accompanied by three completed reference forms, one

of which must be from a DVM/VMD and one from a current of former employer.
If an applicant has no employment history, they are asked to include a reference from a professor directly involved in the completion of their veterinary degree program. Program highlights: GVELRP incentivizes Georgia veterinari-
ans who agree to devote 20 per hours per week, in designated rural counties with populations of 35,000 or less, for one year to food animal veterinary services. The 2022 Georgia General Assembly approved $90,000 for program funding, allowing up to $18,000 award payments for up to five award recipients. The Georgia Student Finance Commission will apply payment against pre-determined student loans as indicated by the applicant. Applications will be accepted until Aug. 1. Visit http://www.agr.georgia.gov/geor-

g i a -ve t e r i n a r y- e du c a t io n -lo a n - r e p ayment-program.aspx for online application information. Applicants currently enrolled in a GVELRP or USDA cancellable loan program will not be eligible but are encouraged to participate in future offerings. The Georgia Veterinary Education Board will review, determine, and announce award recipients by Aug. 30, 2022. Completed applications can be returned via email to statevetedboard@agr.georgia.gov or mailed to:

Kel-Mac Saddle Club awards scholarship to young equestrian

Molly Head is the recipient of the 2022 Barbara Cumming Memorial Scholarship awarded by the Kel-Mac Saddle Club in Madison. Molly, an excellent student, has been an active member of Kel-Mac for at least four years. Her horse, Bella was a rescue horse that Molly trained and showed herself.
Barbara Cumming was a vital and active member of Kel-Mac for 40 years. An accomplished horsewoman, she helped the horse shows run smoothly and participated in camping trips and trail rides. She passed away earlier this year.
Donations to the scholarship fund established in her name can be sent to Kel-Mac Saddle Club, PO Box 5474, Athens, GA 30604.
Celebrating 46 years, Kel-Mac Saddle Club has donated more than $157,000 back to our community. Past recipients have included the Sheriff's Empty Stocking Fund, The Georgia Equine Rescue League, the Calvin Center's Horses & Warriors program, a student scholarship and the equestrian facilities of State and County Parks such as A. H. Stephens, Hard Labor Creek, Don Carter, Watson Mill Bridge and Heritage Park.
All contributions are funded by the volunteer-run horse shows. The next shows will be held Sept. 17 and Oct. 8 at the Morgan County Agricultural Center at 2380 Athens Hwy, Madison, GA 30650.
Classes include hunter, western, gaited, trail obstacles, halter/ showmanship, costume contest at the Oct. show and much more. Look for a new show sheet in August at Kel-Mac.com and in feed stores. New this year are revised jumps and a new course design.
General admission is free and concession food and drinks are available. For more info go to Facebook, Kel-Mac.com, or call Susie at 706.342.3775.

LARRY FOR THE COUNTRY: A life, part two

PAGE 9

By Larry Walker
lwalker@whgmlaw.com
Blackie. A black chow. A mammal closely related to the wolf with a blueblack tongue and a black-lined mouth. A dog breed with a bad reputation. My first dog. My friend, Blackie, with whom I spent much time starting in Perry, but soon removed to my Walker grandparents in deep rural Washington County.
My first deep sadness was when Blackie left me. And I still remember World War II. Daddy was in the U.S. Navy stationed in Jacksonville, Fla. Mama and I lived down there with him. I was really young, but I remember the tree, or was it a huge bush, in the backyard where we lived. I'd climb up in the tree/bush with many more challenging treeclimbs in the years to come. It's my only memory of preschool life in Florida. We probably moved back home to Perry when I was about five years old. My first day in school Perry Elementary, just off Main Street. My saintly mother held my hand as we walked down Swift Street with a left on Second Street, and then across Main (U.S. 341) to the school and my classroom (it was on the closest end of the building for us). Mama cried as she turned me over to Miss Frances Couey, and I cried with her. I remember it, and I remember what a wonderful teacher Miss Couey was. She taught me to read well. What a lasting blessing!

The fifth grade and Miss Dorothy Jones. Another great teacher. And Jean Bledsoe in the 6th. Ms. Bledsoe would ask me to tell a story to our class and I would stand and talk, including every classmate in the room in the story! What, a budding writer and a future politician?
The 8th grade, junior high, with basketball (I loved it), taking Ag and joining the F.F.A, a confusing interest in the girls, my giving the 8th grade commencement address. I remember parts of it: "I am a Georgian, listen well my fellow Georgians for my state is a strong state and its people a strong people...and, to paraphrase Horace Greely, `Come South young man, come South..." Thanks to teachers Melissa Tucker and Mabel Weaver for helping me with my speech! Did I ever tell you that while you were living? I hope so.
And, then it was the 9th grade and a brand-new school, Perry High School. And, PHS now had football and our first head coach, Herb St. John, a former All-American lineman and the "kick-off man" at the University of Georgia. He and I became close friends and I miss him very much.
Before I knew it, I was a 10th grader, and memorable things were about to happen one bad, one fairly good, and one that was wonderful. First, the bad: It was the year of the Asian Flu and I got it. I thought I was going to die and didn't much care if I did. I could keep nothing down, not even water. But miraculously, I survived just in time to "weigh-in" for the football team.
Remember, I had just started getting over the flu. I weighed 128 pounds! My playing weight as a quarterback was 135. I made the "junior varsity" as a quarterback. I don't remember anything that was worthy of mentioning about this but will in a future column.

The wonderful was about to happen: It was the first January day of class after the Christmas break in 1958. She walked into Mrs. Molly Moss' 10th grader room and was seated right in front of me: Wow! I was immediately smitten. It was Janice Knighton, whose family had moved to Perry from Quitman.
Janice says she was very nervous and very sad about leaving her friends in Brooks County, but, hopefully, that did not last very long. She was immediately accepted by all students and staff at Perry High School. Principal Eric Staples and Librarian, Chloe Staples, were among those that helped her make the transition.
She was kind, polite, and thoughtful to everyone (teachers and students) at Perry High school. And, she was very pretty having been the Homecoming Queen at Quitman High School just weeks before leaving Quitman for Perry as a 10th grader. And I think I was already in love with her. I was. And so it went. Janice and I were a couple. And, with a few breakups along the way, we finished high school that way.
Janice had played high school basketball and was a star on Perry High's first basketball team in many years. I was president of the senior class, and the back-up quarterback on Perry's Region Champion football and its point guard on a not-too-good basketball team. And Janice was crowned Homecoming Queen at a 1959 Perry High School football game. And she was and is the only "two schools homecoming queen" I ever knew. I was her date to the Junior Senior Prom and with more to come and soon.
All in all, things were good, and we were happy. And I'll write about some of this in my article next month.

Mercer Medical Moment: 7 things to know about type 2 diabetes

By Melanie S. Shoemaker, Second-year MD
student
Mercer University School of Medicine
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease in which your body cannot efficiently use the energy from your food to fuel your body. This condition results in abnormally high sugar levels in your blood. More than 30 million people have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes nationwide, and that number has grown rapidly over the last few years.
Here are seven things that you should know about type 2 diabetes: Who is most likely to get type 2 diabetes? Risk factors for diabetes include being overweight or obese, living a sedentary lifestyle, having high cholesterol levels, and having a close relative with type 2 diabetes, such as a parent or sibling. For unknown reasons, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Asians are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. How can I prevent type 2 diabetes? One of the best ways to prevent type 2 diabetes is to live a healthy lifestyle by

eating healthy food and getting regular physical activity. If eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly seem like too big of a task, start small. Slowly add vegetables and fruits into your diet by replacing something unhealthy with something healthy each week. Start walking regularly and increase your distance or pace as you go. You should aim for 20-25 minutes a day of aerobic activity or 150 minutes per week. How do I know if I have type 2 diabetes? Approximately 1 in 5 Americans don't know that they have type 2 diabetes. You may have diabetes and not know it. Diabetes often does not show symptoms until after you have had it for a while. Signs and symptoms may include increased thirst, frequent urination, increased hunger, unintended weight loss, and blurred vision. Your doctor's office can test you for type 2 diabetes. How will my doctor test me for type 2 diabetes? Your doctor will likely draw some blood to check your sugar levels. To get faster results your doctor may prick your finger, which is called a finger stick blood test. My doctor said I have prediabetes. What is that? Prediabetes is a condition where your blood sugar levels are elevated, but not high enough to qualify for type 2 diabetes. If left untreated, prediabetes will develop into type 2

diabetes. If you have prediabetes, you should be checked for type 2 diabetes every one to two years. Why is it important to treat type 2 diabetes? Since your body can't effectively use the food that you're eating, many of your important organs can't work properly. Type 2 diabetes increases your risk of heart and blood vessel diseases such as stroke and high blood pressure. It can also cause problems with your nerves, leading to tingling and numbness in your hands and feet. The numbness can gradually spread upwards to your arms and legs. Diabetes is also associated with kidney problems, vision changes, and slow wound healing. Is there a cure for type 2 diabetes? Once you have diabetes, it cannot be cured. That's why taking steps to prevent and control the condition is so important. If you have already been diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to live a healthy lifestyle and take your medications as prescribed so that the disease will not worsen. If you are concerned that you might have type 2 diabetes or need help managing this chronic condition, talk to your doctor at your next visit. To learn more about diabetes, visit diabetes.org.

The poultry industry, worth some $28 billion to the state, targets growers with ongoing campaigns enforcing strict adherence to biosecurity measures designed to keep avian influenza out of commercial chicken houses.
In 2015, the poultry lab introduced its AI Hotline as a resource to hobbyist and backyard flock keepers who suspect their birds might have avian influenza.
"When there is no immediate threat (from AI), we receive one or two calls a month," Dufour-Zavala said. As reports of AI spread earlier this year, the number of calls reached 300 in February, and 100 each in March, April and May, she said.
"The hotline is very active, and is very, very useful. It really helps us triage and decide what to

Georgie's Drive
Thru Dearing
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! You know, the best milk comes from happy cows, and the happiest cows I've ever seen live near Dearing at Hillcrest Dairy. The other day, I took my wife, Georgina, and our pups, Ginny and Skip, for a tour of the place. Our gracious host was one of the owners, Mark Rodgers, who showed us what life was like on a dairy farm 80 years ago. Then we climbed on a wagon pulled by a Farmall H that has spent its whole life there. On the tour trailer, we rode through a gate and drove through the middle of the milking herd where we saw what makes more than 300 Holstein cows so happy today: a clean, cool barn with fans and robotic backscratchers they wait in line to use. The cows were also waiting in line to be milked by high tech equipment. After seeing the Mooternity Ward, we saw the two kinds of robots the dairy uses to milk the cows: Autobots and Decepticons! Just kidding. The robots are all from Delaval, a dairy equipment manufacturer, instead of Cybertron, the Transformers' home. If you ever find yourself in Dearing, give them a shout at 706.831.7738 to book a tour of your own.

Citrus Canker is detected in Georgia

Commercial, backyard growers advised to be on the lookout

ATLANTA The Georgia Department of Agriculture is alerting commercial and backyard citrus growers that citrus canker has been found in the state. Late last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Plant Protection and Quarantine laboratory confirmed a suspected sample from a commercial citrus grove in Decatur County was citrus canker.
"Citrus canker is not harmful to humans, pets, or other animals but it is another disease our growers need to be on the lookout for," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. "We want our citrus growers to be aware, so

their produce remains marketable as fresh fruit." Citrus canker is caused by the bacterial pathogen Xan-
thomonas citri, subspecies citri, and is a serious disease of all citrus varieties. Another citrus disease, citrus greening (also known as "HLB" or "Huanglongbing") is already established in some Georgia counties and is regulated by the USDA.
Federal guidelines require surveys to determine the extent of citrus canker establishment in the state. GDA and USDA personnel will begin surveying in Southwest Georgia

this week. Any backyard or commercial citrus grower that suspects
his or her trees may be infected with citrus canker should contact their local University of Georgia Extension Agent (https://extension.uga.edu/county-offices.html) or the GDA's Plant Protection office at 404.586.1140 to submit a sample.

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black was joined by members of two FFA chapters from Covington June 1 to promote Georgia-grown Vidalia onions to shoppers of the Chamblee Tucker Road Kroger store in Atlanta.
Onions from G&R Farms in Glennville are sold at the store. G&R is one of 60 registered growers located in a 20-county area of South Georgia. The crop is planted by hand between Halloween and Christmas, with about 70,000 plants per acre. Approximately 10,000 acres were cultivated for the 2022 harvest.
