Rodale Institute opens education center for organic farming in Chattahoochee Hills

In 2017, Rebecca and Ross Williams closed their cheese house at Many Fold Farm, their 300-acre farm in south Fulton
County near Atlanta. That closing resulted in the opening of the Southeast Organic Center by the Rodale Institute in 2020. Since then, the center has provided research and training opportunities to build organic farming across the region.
Rebecca Williams explained that the partnership between Many Fold Farm and Rodale is built on discovering ways to make organic farming more sustainable environmentally and economically to allow regenerative organic farming to compete with conventional agriculture.
"Scientific research and high-quality farmer education conducted by the Southeast Organic Center will validate and expand truly sustainable agricultural practices in order to save our food system, our planet, and ourselves," she said.
Officials at Rodale see opportunities rising for organic farming across the country. The non-profit organization has opened centers in Marion, Iowa, and Ventura, Calif., for research and developing farming methods for Midwest and Western regions.
Jeff Moyer, executive director of Rodale Institute, noted in the press release announcing the center's opening that Georgia only has 88 certified organic farms, 0.5 percent of total organic farms in the United States. Meanwhile, organic agriculture has grown to a $50 billion industry annually, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture.
Kristie Wendelberger, the Rodale Southeast Organic Center research director, checks a trial plot of different plants to determine the best transitional crops for improving soil health. The center began research this year on a 300-acre farm in Chattahoochee Hills to provide research and education programs to expand organic farming in the southeast. (Special Photo)
Moyer said another reason to come to the Southeast is that neighboring states have seen certified organic farms double between 2011 and 2016.
"The region is ripe for opportunities and explosive growth in organic agriculture,"

Notice to Georgia Apple Growers
The Georgia Agriculture Commodity Commission for Apples, which was established by the Georgia General Assembly in 1962 under the Commodity Promotion Act, is submitting for approval an amendment to its marketing order that changes the range of assessment. If approved, the amended marketing order will change the current amount of assessment from 2 cents ($0.02) per bushel, to a range of 2 cents ($0.02) to 4 cents ($0.04) per bushel on Georgia produced apples. This amendment would allow for the Georgia Apple Commission to approve an assessment within this range through a majority vote of a quorum of members that would then become effective upon notice to affected growers. The purpose of this amendment is to allow for a change in the assessment, without the added process of amending the marketing order, in case an issue arises where more funding is needed. The Georgia Apple Commission can only use funds collected through assessments for the purpose of research, educa-
tion, and promotion of Georgia Apples or the Georgia Apple Industry.
Prior to a vote on this amendment, as required by law, there must be a public hearing to allow for comments from those affected by the proposed amendment. This hearing will be held:
Tuesday January 11th, 1:30 PM Gilmer County Farm Bureau Building 6 Sailors Dr. Ellijay, GA 30540
Voting on the marketing order shall take place after the public hearing through February 14, 2022. In order for the marketing order to be approved, at least 25% of the ballots for eligible producers of record must be returned and 66.3% of the returned ballots that are declared valid must have voted affirmatively.

Forestry Matters: Timber Harvest Notification process gets an overhaul for 2022
By Stasia Kelly
Georgia Forestry Commission
The new year brings changes and fresh beginnings to us all on a number of fronts. In Georgia, a key change for the timber harvesting notification process will take place in 2022. In compliance with legislation that updated OCGA 12-6-24, the Georgia Forestry Commission will launch an easy-to-use, statewide harvest notification website, which will replace county-by-county notifications.
The changes to OCGA 12-6-24 came out of HB 897 passed in 2020. The specifics within 897 were developed by a timber harvest ordinance working group put together by the Georgia Forestry Association (GFA). The taskforce was made up of county officials, Association County Commissioners of Georgia, Georgia Forestry Commission, GFA, timber harvesters and partners in the forest industry who recognize that an equitable and uniform system for timber harvesting is vital for the security of Georgia's $36.3 billion forest products industry.
Certain requirements of HB 897 took effect immediately, such as:

It is a significant improvement that will increase efficiency in the timber supply chain and modernize Georgia counties' ability to receive logging operation notifications," Lowrimore said.
Per the legislation, after the system launch in January, counties that require timber harvest notification can begin transitioning their processes to the new website. Within 18 months of the launch, the website will become the required format for counties to receive timber harvest notifications.
The Timber Harvest Notification website is designed to establish statewide uniformity on the notification process. It will also make it easier for counties to be aware of - and monitor- new harvest sites within their jurisdictions.
For more information about Georgia's new timber harvest notification system, email timberharvest@gfc.state.ga.us.

Georgie's Drive Thru Elbert County
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! Did you know that Ol' Dan Tucker was a real person and is buried on a bluff overlooking Richard B. Russell Lake. Daniel Tucker was born in Virginia and held the rank of captain in the Revolutionary War. He received a land grant on the Savannah River in Elbert County, where he farmed and served as a minister. He also bought land on the river and ran Tucker's Ferry across it into South Carolina, near where the Highway 72 bridge crosses Lake Russell. He was so beloved by his neighbors that they wrote a song about him that we still sing to this day. You know: Ol' Dan Tucker was a fine old man, washed his face in a frying pan. He combed his hair with a wagon wheel and died with a toothache in his heel. Ol' Dan Tucker didn't really die with a toothache in his heel, though. Legend has it, he either died from a snake bite on his foot or after being thrown by his horse after it had been bitten. He was 78.

Bobwhite Quail: Rural counties in South Georgia see big economic benefits from these small birds
Continued From Page 1
er can keep their land and crop while improving bottom lines, natural resources and quail population, we'll sure give it a try."
Bobwhite quail can be found across the state but are significant in southwest Georgia and north Florida, centering on Thomasville, where quail hunters come from across the country each year during the fall and winter hunting season.
Dallas Ingram, the DNR state quail coordinator, said people often ask her why bobwhite quail need to be protected. She said it is an easy answer.
"There is such a cultural-historical tie to bobwhites, especially here in the Southeast, and there's a big economic benefit for a lot of small counties," Ingram said. "That's where a lot of these big plantations bring in a huge amount of revenue for areas that don't have a lot of industry and the jobs it would bring."
In 2017, quail hunting was responsible for an estimated $92.5 million in economic impact, nearly 800 jobs, and $41 million in labor income in Thomas County. In Albany and surrounding communities, the economic impact from quail hunting is estimated at $145 million, according to Tall Timbers, a land management and conservation group and the Center for Economic Forecasting and Analysis at Florida State University.
For those reasons, the Georgia General Assembly designated the bobwhite quail as the state's official game bird in 1970.
Ingram explained bobwhite quail habitat has declined over the years in agricultural areas of Georgia. More farms were smaller in size, which was low-impact agriculture in the past. There was also more burning through woodlands that regenerated wildlife habitat.
As farms became larger and the land was worked longer, those habitat areas were lost. Ingram said there is an educational component in the program to show farmers the benefits of habitat conservation by breaking some long-held habits.
"My granddaddy would die at the thought of us putting all these weeds back along the field edges, but those are the things beggar weeds, partridge pea and ragweed that are quality quail and turkey habitat, and a lot of other species
The DNR State Quail Coordinator Dallas Ingram speaks with landowner Reese Thompson in Wheeler County to develop and protect bobwhite quail habitat on private land. The DNR and Quail Forever have established a pilot program to help farmers convert low-production areas of their fields to quail habitat and offset costs with precision farming methods. (Allison Colter/DNR)
benefit from those as well," she said. If we could put a 15 or 30-foot border along an edge of a field, we can increase our quail and songbird habitat tremendously."
For more information about the Working Lands for Quail Habitat pilot program, call Georgia DNR's Private Lands Program at 229.420.1183. The DNR also has ongoing bobwhite quail conservation programs and resources for landowners and hunters at www.georgiawildlife.com/bobwhite-quail.
While no one knows when quail became a popular game bird, it was likely in the 1800s with the invention of the scattergun. In the early 1900s, Georgia became known as the quail capital of the world and in 1970, the bobwhite quail was designated as Georgia's official state game bird.
However, as quail hunters and other wildlife conservationists know, quail populations throughout the U.S. and Georgia have declined dramatically. Data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Breeding Bird Survey indicate that from 1966 to 2018, Georgia's quail population declined by more than 72 percent. This decline has led to a reduction in the number of quail hunters and quail harvest.
In 1962, an estimated 135,000 hunters harvested about 4 million quail in Georgia, but by 2019, the number of hunters had declined to 12,742, and the reported quail harvest to about 279,291 with nine out of 10 being pen-raised birds.
The 2021-2022 quail hunting season in Georgia runs through Feb. 28.

Rodale Institute: Voluteers are needed to assist with variety trials testing crops and other research projects

Moyer said. "But organic farming is based on biology. It's farming with nature. So, it's unique in every community. You have to work with the soil, weather patterns, and seeds and breeds well suited to the region."
Laura Wingfield, a research technician at the Southeast Organic Center, explained they have started their first research trials this year. One trial is on organic transition plantings. Wingfield said they planted cucumbers, but the trial's goal is to test out different cover crop combinations and conventional versus conservation tillage methods.
"And then we have variety trials going where we have three different varieties of squash, three varieties of carrots, and two varieties of peppers," Wingfield said. "We planted them in succession two weeks apart, and we're just seeing what time of the season is the best to plant and how that affects yields."
The center is looking for volunteers to help with the farming work of the trials and research projects. They have a team of three volunteers and are looking for more help with weeding, irrigation, planting and harvesting.
"It is a great opportunity for folks who want to learn about agriculture and want to

learn about research," Wingfield said. "Our center just started up in February of last year, so we're still growing, so it's a great opportunity for folks to learn about starting a farm."
For more information about opportunities to volunteer, go to https://rodaleinstitute.org/ about/facilities-and-campuses/regional-resource-centers/ and fill out the online volunteer application or contact Wingfield at laura. wingfield@rodaleinstitute.org.
Wingfield added the center is looking to have an educational component to provide information for those working on large or small farms. "Our farm managers are experienced in small-scale, diversified farming, too, so they can certainly answer questions folks have."
The Southeast Organic Center will partner with Serenbe, the nearby agricultural community, to connect farmers and consumers with educational programs and events. Other partners are Georgia Organics, Southern SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education) program and The Conservation Fund.
