Georgia agriculture rallies assistance for Kentucky farmers,
agribusinesses devastated by rare December tornadoes
By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
The Georgia Department of Agriculture, the Georgia Cattlemen's Association, and Georgia Milk Producers are encouraging Georgians to give to tornado recovery efforts on behalf of Kentucky agriculture producers and agribusinesses that suffered catastrophic losses to a series of tornadoes Dec. 10 and 11.
The most powerful of the tornadoes documented by the National Weather Service so far cut a path of destruction more than 200 miles long from its origin in northeast Arkansas, across the Missouri Bootheel and northwest Tennessee into western Kentucky. Winds in that storm measured upwards of 190 miles per hour. More than 70 Kentuckians were killed by the storms. In all, as many as five tornadoes hit the state, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
"West and western Kentucky agriculture did not escape the historic and devastating tornadoes that struck the region this weekend," Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said on Dec. 13. "We've seen lives lost, grain bins leveled, and livestock and poultry barns demolished. Our farmers need funds and resources to maintain operations and rebuild."
"Lydia and I ask every member of the Market Bulletin family to join us in making a generous gift this Christmas season to those who've lost so much," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black. "Let's be sure our friends know that Georgia Grown is Kentucky Proud."
Nikki Whitaker, membership coordinator for the Kentucky Cattlemen's Association in Lexington, said more than 25 counties were
10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary impacted by tornados. "It's hard to direct efforts over that large of a space, but we are trying. It's unrecognizable here. The destruction you see on the news in the rural towns spills over into our agriculture lands. Lots of destruction and death," Whitaker said.
Whitaker expects losses of upwards of 500 head of cattle.
Farrah Newberry, director of the Georgia Milk Producers, is working with the Kentucky Dairy Development Council to host a fundraiser to help farmers who also suffered damage.
"As most of you are aware, west Kentucky was hit hard by the tornadoes," Newberry wrote in an email to her members. "What most people don't know is that the agriculture community, especially the Amish and Mennonite (communities) suffered the loss of family members, livestock, homes, barns, feed, stored commodities, fencing and so much more. This happened all across the state, not just in west Kentucky. Counties that suffered agriculture losses include Chris- Rare December tornadoes caused extensive losses to Kentucky's agriculture industry. (Image courtesy

Recent recalls highlight value of GDA Food Labs
Routine surveillance detects Listeria in convenience foods
By Amy Carter amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
The Georgia Department of Agriculture is watching what you eat.
Working in tandem with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the department's Retail Risk-Based Sampling Program targets foods with a high risk for or a known history of causing foodborne illnesses. These are "ready-toeat" foods that can be eaten straight out of the container or with few additional steps.
GDA food safety inspectors collect samples monthly of convenience foods such as bagged salads, precooked frozen foods, and premade deli salads, and deliver those to the department's laboratories in Atlanta and Tifton for testing.
Sample categories are defined by the FDA and supplemented by agriculture department intelligence. Program leader Colby Brown worked with staff of the GDA food lab last fall to identify additional high-risk products for inspectors to collect for testing, and that
decision led to the detection of Listeria monocytogenes in a frozen shrimp product and a bagged salad product.
Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only shortterm symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause

Georgie's Drive Thru "Cola"-mbus
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! Columbus is the hometown of some of the most
recognizable companies in the country. Did you know the "C" in AFLAC stands for Columbus? That's Columbus, Georgia, not Ohio! Synovus Bank started out in Columbus, too. Plus, two of the most beloved soft drink companies started out in Columbus: Coca-Cola and RC, short for Royal Crown Cola. John C. Pemberton perfected his Coca-Cola after the Civil War in his Columbus pharmacy before he took the product to a bigger stage in Atlanta in 1869. Then in 1905, another pharmacist named Claud Hatcher developed Royal Crown Ginger Ale and Chero-Cola in his basement. Because they were "knee-high with flavor," his company introduced the Nehi line of fruit-flavored colas in 1924. Ten years later, the most storied and successful soft drink in the company, Royal Crown Cola, was introduced. Royal Crown Cola was the first company to distribute its product in cans instead of bottles and produced the first zero-calorie soda, Diet Rite, in 1962. Maybe it should have been named Colambus?

Recent Recalls: Atlanta, Tifton labs screen food products for pathogens, pesticide contamination

miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
Both products were recalled voluntarily by the manufacturers. No illnesses were reported in connection with the two products, but both are commodities associated with past outbreaks, a fact that informed Brown's decision to include them in routine sampling.
"The aim of adding items to the list is something I've been reviewing for possible patterns in Georgia, specifically," Brown said. "There may be certain times of year products are purchased by Georgians, for example. The way I have been watching these habits is by collecting data through our sampling program which products test negative or positive, for example. We are looking for trends.
"Although this type of information is not something we want Georgians to worry about as these types of samples are ongoing throughout the entire year, this information can be reassuring to the public that someone is looking out to protect your family and friends, our fellow Georgians, from foodborne illness."
The sampling program is funded through a grant from FDA, the Lab Flexible Funding
Model. According to Carrie Crabtree, director of the laboratory division of GDA, the grant covers random sampling and testing of human food and animal feed.
"The goal is to have a program that surveils as much as possible so GDA and our other food partners can get in front of an issue instead of trying to chase it down," Crabtree said.
In-house laboratories at the Atlanta headquarters of the GDA and its Tifton office split duties when it comes to testing food for human and animal consumption. The Atlanta Food Safety or microbiology lab tests for Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and E. coli 0157:H7 in ready-to-eat items, food manufactured in the state, raw meats, dairy products, and pet foods, to name a few.
"Their mission, like all of our labs, is consumer safety," Crabtree said.
The pesticide lab in Tifton has a threepronged mission, including food safety. Staff there test baby food, produce, honey, and other food commodities for the presence of pesticides to determine if any are present and if so, what they are, whether they're allowed to be on the product, the allowed concentration level if present, and the actual concentration
measured. Samples collected by food safety inspec-
tors are treated as evidence and handled accordingly. Inspectors double bag the sample and create a chain-of-custody document that explains who collected it, where it was collected, where it's going and how it's getting there. The courier who transports the package must also document the number of packages they transported and any unusual incidents during the trip.
Samples must be delivered to the lab within seven days of collection. Cold samples are packed in coolers with ice blocks and must reach the lab at a temperature under 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The coolers are sealed with tamper-resistant tape.
"We are very appreciative of our collaboration and the continued support that the GDA lab provides the food safety program," said Natalie Adan, director of the food safety division. "This truly is a team effort and helps support our mission to protect public health and ensure access to safe food products for all Georgians. The two recent recalls are great examples of the benefits of our retail risk-based surveillance program and how this tool enhances our efforts."
A technician in the Atlanta Food Safety Lab checks the acidity level of dairy samples and adjusts the pH. The samples will be screened for Staph enterotoxin, which causes food poisoning in humans. (Amy Carter/GDA)

Many of those communities do not use insurance and do not accept disaster funds from the government, Newberry said.
The Georgia Milk Producers set up a fund on behalf of the Kentucky Dairy Development Council, a non-profit organization, that will directly benefit Amish and Mennonite dairies and agriculture. The fund will also help other dairies in the state that were affected.
