Yield Behind the Wheel

Harvest season increases risk of roadway accidents involving farm equipment

By Jay Jones
jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
MOULTRIE State highway safety officials and the Georgia Department of Agriculture joined farmers at the Sunbelt Ag Expo on Oct. 20 to encourage motorists to think about safety first and be aware while driving on rural roads to prevent accidents involving farm vehicles.
Each year, the agencies hold the announcement at the expo as part of the Yield Behind the Wheel campaign to increase public awareness of slow-moving farm and construction equipment. Allen Poole, director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, reminded people that more farmers would be out on the roads this fall during the harvest season. Those encounters can be deadly if motorists are not paying attention.
Poole added that the two primary factors involved in these crashes motorists driving too fast or being distracted are preventable.
"Rural roads may not have as much traffic as the interstate, but (farmers) enter the roadways from their fields and to the marketplace

a rural area, especially during harvest time, make sure that you are ready to slow down if you come upon a slow-moving farm vehicle."

the same five-year span. Five people died in crashes last year compared to 16 deaths in 2016.
Poole said that despite the encouraging downward trend of fatalities, the goal is to get that number down to zero each year.

"We are asking everyone to do four

simple things to help reduce the number

of traffic fatalities, and get it down to zero

slow down, buckle up, drive with your

eyes up and put your phone down," Poole

said.

Donald Chase, a Macon County farm-

er, recounted the tragic death in January

of Todd Bone, a friend and farmer from

Taylor County. Chase said Bone was driv-

ing his tractor on a state highway and had

and 866 injured in crashes in the state from 2016-20. Poole noted the number of crashes dropped each year during the same five-year period. Last year, there were 437 total crashes involving farm and construction equip-

Sunbelt Expo draws smaller crowd, same excitement after COVID absence

By Jay Jones jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
MOULTRIE Vendors at the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo were excited to be back after the event, the largest agriculture trade show in the Southeast, was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Expo organizers said fewer exhibitors were scheduled this year, and those who came were unsure what

to expect. Over the three days of the expo, all said it had been a good experience.
"We're just happy to be back. The Sunbelt Expo is a great opportunity to show our models," said Chris Phillips at the John Deere Pavilion. He said the second day was better than the first day of the expo, and people who visited them were interested in the company's newest equipment models. Those included John Deere's latest example of precision agriculture with its new C400 sprayer equipped with cameras along its 120-foot boom arms. Phillips said the cameras can

identify weeds down to a single plant, allowing the onboard computer to localize herbicide application to a spot versus spraying a large section of the field.
Like other companies at the expo, John Deere was dealing with the effects of the COVID pandemic, such as labor shortage and supply chain problems, but also had the added complication of a strike called against the company by the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (United Auto Workers) Oct. 14.

Company spokeswoman Leigh Ann Cleaver said negotiations between the company and UAW were continuing. In the meantime, John Deere is keeping its factories open with a customer service continuation plan that employs non-striking workers and others to keep operations running, Cleaver said in a statement.
"Our immediate concern is meeting the needs of our customers, who work in time-sensitive and critical industries such as agriculture and construction," Cleaver said. "By supporting our customers, the CSC Plan also protects the livelihoods of others who rely on us, including employees, dealers, suppliers, and communities."
Cleaver said customers should continue working with their local John Deere dealership to determine appropriate solutions for their operations.
Other farm equipment manufacturers also acknowledged the challenges of the past 19 months but added they were looking forward to the coming year.
Bennie Branch, president of Kelley Manufacturing Company in Tifton, said crowds were down at their area, but he said it was understandable.
"You can look around the yard, and there's not a whole lot of customers here right now," Branch said on the first day of the expo. "They're picking peanuts. The weather is really good right now, and harvest still has a couple more weeks remaining."
KMC had a new two-row peanut combine.

Georgia's newest Centennial farms honored at Georgia National Fair

PERRY Twenty-nine family farms were honored Oct. 13 at the 27th Georgia Centennial Farm Awards Ceremony. The ceremony recognized qualified farms from both the 2020 and 2021 application years. An awards ceremony was not held during 2020.
Farm owners and their historic properties were recognized in an event hosted by the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Georgia Farm Bureau, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia EMC, Georgia Forestry Commission, and Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter, at the 2021 Georgia National Fair.

2020 winners of Centennial Farm Awards (above) were honored Oct. 13, 2021, at the Georgia National Fair along with 2021 winners (below). No ceremony was held last year due to COVID. (Amy Carter/GDA)
The Centennial Family Farm Award recognizes farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more that are not listed in the National Register.

2020 Centennial Heritage Farm Awards recipients are:
A.J. Casey Farm, Floyd County John Moore Lazenby Homeplace, a.k.a.
Cedar Rock Farm, McDuffie County

Farms hold a central role in the heritage of our state, having formed the economic, cultural, and family foundation for generations of Georgians. All farms earning recognition have continuously operated for 100 years or more.
More than 582 farms have been recognized through the Georgia Centennial Farm Program since its inception in 1993.
Recognition is given to farm owners through one of three distinguished awards: The Centennial Heritage Farm Award honors farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Centennial Farm Award does not require continual family ownership, but farms must be at least 100 years old and listed in the National Register.

Georgia Cooking: Albert DeVane's Fish Dinner

Editor's Note: In honor of the record-setting catch of a red grouper off the Georgia coast recently (see related story, page 9), we pulled this recipe from our archives. A cursory Google search for Albert DeVane in Plant City, Fla., introduced us to a noted historian of the Seminole Tribe, but we can't prove he's the author of this recipe. If you know more, please share.
Submitted by Margaret D. Melton | Plant City, Fla. First published Sept. 15, 1972

Ingredients 4 lbs. grouper lb. butter 1 cup bean sprouts 1 cup bamboo shoots 1 cup water chestnuts 2 large onions, cut in large pieces, not
chopped 1 cup celery, chopped 1 cup bell pepper, chopped 1 tsp. bead (or light) molasses 2 Tbsps. soy sauce Salt and pepper to taste

Directions In large roasting pan, melt butter then add all of the above ingredients, except the fish, and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, until tender (about one hour), keeping lid on.
Add 2 cups hot water and stir to mix thoroughly. Place the fish, cut in serving pieces, and salt and pepper on top of the vegetables. Replace the lid and put in 350 degree Fahrenheit oven and bake for one hour.
Serve with rice.

Guest Column: Ask Consumer Ed
A service of the Georgia Department of Law

Editor's Note: The Market Bulletin is partnering with the Georgia Department of Law to offer articles addressing consumer-related issues, including questions we hear occasionally from buyers and sellers interacting via the Market Bulletin Classifieds. Submit your own questions to the department of law using the web link at the end of this column. Dear Consumer Ed:
I posted an item for sale online and received an email from an interested buyer, saying he wanted to send me a certified check. He said the check will cover the cost of the item plus the expense incurred by the person who will pick up the item on his behalf. I am being asked to deposit the check and then wire a portion to the person picking up the item. Do you think this is a scam? Consumer Ed says:
This sounds like a classic check overpayment scam. Scammers often pose as potential buyers and come up with a reason to pay you more than the sales price. They then send you a check for the higher amount and ask you to wire part of the money back to the "buyer" or his associate. They often try to lend credibility to the scam by printing the words "Cashier's Check" or "Certified" on the check. But don't be fooled. The check is counterfeit, and you are the one responsible for repaying the bank the amount that was wired to the scammer.
A consumer might understandably assume that they are safe to wire money to someone if they first wait for the check to clear, but this is not the case. Just because a

check has "cleared," it does not guarantee that the money is actually there from the issuing bank. Banks are required to make funds available to their customers quickly (in a few days), but it can sometimes take a couple of weeks to discover that a check is counterfeit.
Below are some tips to help you avoid check overpayment scams: Know who you are dealing with independently con-
firm the buyer's name, street address, and telephone number. Never accept a check for more than your selling price. Never agree to wire back funds to a buyer a legitimate buyer will not pressure you to do so, and you have limited recourse if there is a problem with a wire transfer. If you accept payment by check, ask for a check drawn on a local bank or a bank with a local branch. You can visit that bank branch to determine if the check is legitimate. Consider an alternative method of payment, such as an escrow service or online payment service of your choosing. If you believe you have been a victim of a check overpayment scam, you can file a complaint with the Georgia Department of Law's Consumer Protection Division by calling 404.651.8600 or by going to www.consumer. ga.gov.

Kingsland angler hooks record red grouper
A 49-year-old Kingsland man landed a record-breaking red grouper (Epinephelus morio) off the Georgia coast Oct. 4, and has been certified as the new state record holder for that species.
Bruce C. Bartlett Jr. of Henrietta Drive caught the 26-pound, 6.4-ounce red grouper measuring 34.5 inches east of Navy Tower R4 aboard his boat Fishslaya Duece. The fish breaks the previous record of 19 pounds, 7 ounces set by John Wren in 2012.
Doug Haymans, director of DNR's Coastal Resources Division, which oversees the state's Saltwater Gamefish Record Program, said Bartlett's catch is a credit to the years of experience he has as an angler.
"This achievement recognizes not only the size of the catch, but Mr. Bartlett's skill as an angler and the sportsmanship displayed in landing a record-setting gamefish," Haymans said.
Bartlett landed the red grouper using a 5-foot, 8-inch Ugly Stik Tiger rod with Shimano Torium reel with 65-pound Power Pro line using a live cigar minnow as bait. His terminal rig was a fish finder sinker slide with an 8-ounce bank sinker to a 100-pound barrel swivel, following a 60-pound fluorocarbon leader and 6/0 Eagle Claw circle hook.
The catch was weighed at M & A Seafood Market on North Lee Street in Kingsland on scales certified by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The Saltwater Gamefish Records Committee, comprised of DNR marine biologists and staff, approved the new record Oct. 15.
Bartlett will receive a certificate signed by Gov. Brian Kemp acknowledging his record catch, and the record will be added to the list published at CoastalGaDNR.org/ SaltwaterRecords. It will also be included in the 2022 Georgia Sport Fishing Regulations guidebook.
For the current list of men's and women's saltwater fishing records, as well as information on how to submit a catch to the Georgia Saltwater Gamefish Record, please visit CoastalGaDNR.org/SaltwaterRecords.

all his safety equipment on when a tractor-trailer struck him from behind. Bone, 50, died from injuries from the crash. His widow was unable to keep the farm operations going and had to sell her land.
"When I told the family that I was speaking here, they just wanted the message to go out from us and from the department that you should take some time, slow down, observe what's going on around you," Chase said. "Todd was a young farmer who was just building his farming enterprise, and it really caused us a lot of grief from his passing and to see his legacy lost."
NASCAR rookie driver Anthony Alfredo spoke on behalf of the Georgia Peanut Commission on the importance of us-

ing safety belts. He said the use of safety belts driving to work and home is
just as important as it is for him driving at speeds up to 200 mph during a race.
"You just don't wear it because of the speed, but more so for the unexpected, and I think that is what a lot of people forget," Alfredo said. "On the roadways, you like to think that you are in control of your vehicle, as you should be, but you can never know what is over the next hill, around the next turn or who could be around you."
Farmers were also encouraged to follow safety procedures to arrive home alive. Georgia law requires all farm vehicles and wagons on the road to have orange, triangle-shaped

signs. These signs let other drivers approaching these vehicles know that the vehicle ahead is traveling at a significantly slower speed than the normal flow of traffic.
"With the farming community and the driving public working together, we can prevent these crashes and ensure our farmworkers can continue to do their jobs of getting food to our tables safely," Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black said in a statement released during the expo. "Our farmers do not want to hold up traffic and will pull over when they can. We ask drivers to be patient and make sure it is safe to pass before doing so."

Sunbelt Expo: Vendors offer virtual showrooms for those who couldn't make the show in person

Continued From Page 1

Branch said it had been a long time since the company built a combine as small but believed there is a market for them. The combine has all the same technology as KMC's bigger combines. Branch said the two-row combine is targeted toward universities with research plots and toward overseas markets.
Branch said the company kept up with production during the pandemic last year. However, this summer, they experienced a spike in infections that put half their welding crew out of work at one time, which caused some delivery delays.
"That slowed things down, and we appreciate all of our customers understanding where we were," Branch said. "I think everyone understands with everything going on in the industry right now."
Adam Sills with AGCO said he was pleasantly surprised with the people coming by to visit.
"I was helping one group, and when I would turn around, there was another group to talk to, so yesterday was good," Sills said on the last day of the expo. "This show is great for these little tractors right here. Anything under 75 HP with a loader is very popular here."
AGCO presented two new models of their Massey Ferguson 5S and 8S tractor series. Sills explained the company gave the smaller 5S a new body design to pay homage to the classic MF 135 tractor. The cabin on the 8S tractor can come with glass on the front half to provide a wider view for operators.
Another new feature for both tractors is an electronic joystick on the seat's arm, which will allow the operator to move the loader with a twist of a finger and thumb. Speed and efficiency were the primary considerations with developing the joystick functions.
Sills said they adapted to the pandemic last year by creating the AGCO Virtual Showroom where anyone could go online and view models with 360-degree views and videos. AGCO had a good customer response to

the virtual showroom and has kept it for this year's marketing efforts.
"Anybody who may have missed the show or had another engagement or maybe they are still a little worried with COVID out there, they could still access that online," Sills said.
Chris Paulk with Paulk Vineyards joined other Georgia Grown producers selling their products in the Family Living building at the expo. He said they were happy to get out, with the expo being their first show since last year. Paulk offered samples of muscadine juice and jams to visitors with the goal more to make friends than sales.
"It's really about building the brand and making new connections with other Georgia Grown producers to maybe team up and do some new things," Paulk said.

Fun on the Farm!
An acre of activities for young people.

We're gobsmacked by the response to our activity page for kids, Fun on the Farm!, but perhaps we ought to qualify it to include kids of all ages. In addition to young reader Maelee Jane Gable, who colored her grandparents' copy of the Market Bulletin, a young-at-heart reader colored their own, as shown below in the note and picture, Time to Go to Work! Thank you for sharing with us!

Georgie's Drive
Thru Dublin
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! On Nov. 11, we will celebrate Veterans Day to commemorate the Armistice with Germany that marked the end of World War I. A veteran of World War II has been memorialized in Dublin with a highway named after him. I had no idea who Kelso Horne was until I asked my great-uncle Joe about who the new U.S. Hwy. 441 Bypass was named after several years back. Uncle Joe served with Gen. George S. Patton in Europe and also knew Kelso Horne. Uncle Joe told me that Lt. Horne jumped into France with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Normandy Invasion in June of 1944. A few days later, Lt. Horne was resting beside a road when a jeep pulled up with a general and a photographer onboard. The photographer wanted to take Lt. Horne's picture holding his rifle. The photo made the cover of the Aug. 14, 1944, edition of LIFE magazine! The picture became a very famous one and Lt. Horne was rumored to be the inspiration for the caricature "Kilroy" that popped up all along the way to Berlin and even at the end of the World War II movie, "Kelly's Heroes."

The U.S. Hwy. 441 Bypass in Laurens County was named in honor of native son Lt. Kelso Horne, shown below on a 1944 cover of LIFE magazine. (Lee Lancaster/GDA)

Small tractors will pack a big punch at third annual antique ag show
Perry Auto Fair will throw classic cars into the mix

By Amy Carter amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
Heretofore, an 8-mile commute made by the late country singer George Jones aboard a 10hp John Deere held the world's record for the wildest drive on a riding lawnmower.
That record may soon fall in the Reaves Arena at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. A mini tractor pull is one of two new additions to the line-up for the 3rd Annual Georgia National Antique Agriculture Show in Perry Nov. 11-13. The mini tractor pull will kick off at 10 a.m. Nov. 12 and Nov. 13.
In addition to vintage machinery and demonstrations of old farm ways, this year's show will be held in conjunction with the Perry Auto Fair, a combination car show and swap meet for car, truck, and motorcycle enthusiasts. Admission to all is $5 per person this year.

Ben Crosby, organizer of the mini tractor pull, was introduced to the sport as a 10-year-old. Now 33, he's active in the Southeast Georgia Mini Tractor Pullers based in Effingham County and hopes to make the mini tractor pull an annual event at the Perry fairgrounds.
The sport utilizes garden tractors to pull a 5,500-lb sled, a scaled down version of the weight transfer device used in full-size truck and tractor pulls. Garden tractors equipped with higher horsepower motors than most lawnmowers were first marketed in the 1950s. Crosby said Cub Cadets are the most popular model used in pulling today.
"We've got them all the way from stock basically taking it right from cutting grass to going out there and pulling

The 3rd Annual Georgia National Antique Ag Show will be Nov. 11-13 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry. Admission is $5 per person per day and includes all antique ag exhibits and demonstrations as well as the Perry Auto Fair and mini tractor pull. For more information, visit www.gnfa.com/p/about/georgia-national-antique-agriculture-show, https://perrygaswapmeet.com/events, or @southeastgaminitractorpullers on Facebook.

all the way up to highly modified custom frames with four-cylinder motorcycle engines on them," Crosby said. "We've got from mild to wild." The inaugural pull promises to be quite loud and very busy, Crosby said. He was hopeful for 100 tractors this first year, but estimates that number could double or triple, based on interest. He's heard from pullers in Wisconsin, New York, Maryland, Ohio, Virginia, both Carolinas, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama. "We have 18 classes, from stock up to motorcycle engine, outlaw. The full pull line is going to be somewhere around 200 feet. If
you make it that far you'll come back to a second round and pull again," he said.
Cash prizes and plaques will be awarded to the winners in each class.
"If you've never seen one, definitely come on out and see it," Crosby said. "It's easy to get started if you're interested, we can get you hooked up and going. It's not very expensive to get started and it's family oriented. It's friendly competition, it's simple, easy and it's very fun."
Just don't forget your ear plugs.

Pandemic Response and Safety Grant Program will aid small businesses with COVID-related expenses

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is accepting applications from food processors, distributors, farmers markets, and producers for $650 million in grant funds to cover expenses incurred in their coronavirus response.
The Pandemic Response and Safety Grant Program covers costs incurred between Jan. 27, 2020 the date upon which the public health emergency was declared by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Dec. 31, 2021. Grants will cover the activities associated with:
Workplace Safety: Implementing workplace safety measures to protect workers against COVID-19.
Provide personal protective equipment, thermometers, cleaning supplies, sanitizer, or hand washing stations.
Installation and purchase of air filters or new signage. Market Pivots: Implementing market pivots to protect workers against COVID19. Develop and implement online platforms. Utilize online or print materials to communicate market
pivots. Retrofitting Facilities: Retrofitting facilities for worker and consumer safety to protect against COVID19. Installation and purchase of protective barriers made

of plexiglass or plastic sheeting, walk up windows, heat lamps/heaters, fans, tents, propane, weights, tables, chairs and lighting. Transportation: Providing additional transportation options to maintain social distancing and worker and consumer safety to protect against COVID-19. Secure additional transportation services for workers. Offer new delivery routes or distribution services. Worker Housing: Providing worker housing that protects workers against COVID-19. Secure additional housing resources/services to maintain social distancing or to allow for quarantining of new or exposed employees. Medical: Providing health services to protect workers against COVID-19 Offer or enable vaccinations, testing, or healthcare treatment of infected employees, including any paid leave due to COVID-19 infection. The minimum funding request amount is $1,500. The maximum funding request amount is $20,000. Funding requests may range from $1,500 to $20,000. In this first round of PRS funding, USDA is targeting sup-

port to small businesses in certain commodity areas, farmers markets, and small specialty crop producers. According to stakeholder feedback, these entities were all significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and received insufficient federal support to address the costs they incurred to keep workers safe and help keep the U.S. food supply intact during the crisis.
While USDA is focusing this first round of funding to small producers, food processors and distributors that meet small business size standards, and farmers markets, USDA may expand eligibility in future rounds of funding to include additional businesses not covered by the first round. Future rounds are dependent upon availability of funds. USDA is also focusing this first round of funding on certain commodities due to the unique impacts of the pandemic on their businesses. USDA may expand eligibility in future rounds of funding to include commodities not covered by the first round.
Check eligibility and make application online at https://usda-prs.grantsolutions.gov/usda.
Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Nov. 22, 2021.
