The Georgia National Fair picks up where it left off in 2019
By Amy Carter amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov PERRY Georgia Zumwalt was in a hurry to meet the noon deadline for submitting various samples of her work to be judged in the 2021 Georgia National Fair Honey Show Oct. 9, but heavy traffic entering the fairgrounds slowed her down. Although Zumwalt who ended up winning Best in Show for her dipped taper beeswax candles was stressed by the delays, others might see those traffic jams as a sign

authority of the fairgrounds, its leadership,
and staff for persevering. The loss of revenue
from the fair prompted the Georgia General

keep the facility operating.
The COVID pandemic delivered a worst-

it did with many other aspects of society, it
also presented an opportunity to look for new

Market Watch: New store at Thomasville Farmers Market looks to bring the farm directly to customers
By Jay Jones
jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
Abby Davison said she hopes to bring the best from two farms to a store her family is opening at the Thomasville State Farmers Market this fall. The store will carry pork from her family farm and beef raised by her husband, Zack, on his farm. She said the most challenging part is finding a good name for the store.
"It's a little tricky since it is part of Thompson Farms. I was a Thompson, and we'll be doing Thompson Farms pork, so it is an extension of us, but it is not because we want to showcase Davison beef and other Georgia-grown products, too," she said.
Her grandfather started Thompson Farms, and today her father, Andrew Thompson, operates the farm with his sister, Donna Storey. Andrew runs the processing plant while Abby's brother, Bayly Thompson, runs the pig farming operations. Davison said that Donna is in the business office and is the "go-to for all things person" at the farm.
"And we call mom the farm chef because she makes home-cooked meals for all the employees and us four days a week, so she's part of it as well," she said.
Davison said the connection with family farms is important to the store's success as people become more aware of who produces their food.
"I think the pandemic has caused people to realize the importance of buying local, and especially in knowing where your food comes from," Davison said. "So, I think the pandemic forced people into getting out of their comfort zone and see what is available to them in their own state and even their own neighborhood."
Thompson Farms is in Dixie, about 20 miles east of Thomasville. Andrew Thompson established the processing plant at the farm, called Thompson Farms Smokehouse, which allows them to package and brand their pork products for sale at the farm store and online.
Davison said the processing plant was also an opportunity for Zack to move from a cow-calf operation to selling beef from his farm.
The idea to open a store at the farmers market was born out of the pandemic. Cindy Jursik, manager of the Thomasville State Farmers Market, explained that during the shut-

Husband and wife Zack and Abby Davison are collaborating to open a new retail store at the Thomasville State Farmers Market to highlight direct-from-farm pork products from Abby's family-owned Thompson Farms and beef products from Zack's Davison Farms. down last year, farmers saw an increase in demand from their produce and meat from the nearby public as grocery stores experienced shortages.
"A lot of people were selling online, and then they would have a place for people to come and pick it up, and that is what they were doing; they were setting up here on Saturdays for pickups," Jursik said. "They got interested in opening a store, and we happened to have a building available where someone had just moved out."
Davison said customers were coming back after buying directly from them. That demand got her and her family to consider a second retail store. They are working to remodel the space at the farmers market and look to open by Thanks-
giving. "We wanted to find a way to give people more bang for
their buck," Davison said. "The meat in the supermarket was going sky high, and nobody could hardly afford to go out to get a decent meal, so we decided to do a cooler hog, a half hog and a whole hog offering, but people would have had to pick it up from our store in Dixie which is far out there. We're kind of in the middle of nowhere."
She said the state farmers market is the perfect location for them. It is on the main thoroughfare in Thomasville, and is less than an hour's drive from Tallahassee, Fla.
"Lewis Produce is already there, so they would be right behind us. They are a well-established business in Thomasville, and they have all of the good fruits and vegetables," Davison said. "People will be able to come and do like a one-stop-shop sort of thing get your fruits and vegetables at Lewis and get your farm-fresh meats from us."
Davison said she and her family have always believed the state farmers markets are assets for the community and state, especially with the public's interest in finding locally grown food.
"That's what a farmers market is all about, and we just want to be able to grow there because there's so much potential," she said. "We just want to be able to grow the farmers market, and hopefully, once we get in, other farmers will do the same."

Larry For The Country: A dog story
By Larry Walker
lwalker@whgmlaw.com
This is a dog story. Actually it's about lots of dogs the ones that I liked but didn't love, and the ones that stole my heart and made me cry when they departed this earth and still make me cry today when I think about them. But let's start at the beginning.
I was young, about six, maybe, and I liked dogs and wanted one. I knew I wanted a dog and not a cat, and although what I wanted at that time was a dog and I thought that cats were female and dogs were male, I wanted a dog not because of male and female, but I just like dogs better and still do. Finally, Daddy ruled that I could get a dog, if I would "help look after it," and so Daddy got me a Chow that was totally black, except for his tongue which was part black and part red and with which he licked me many times. Daddy let me name "my dog" and being a creative little boy, I named him "Blackie." Chows have a reputation for being not nice, but Blackie was gentle and sweet, so my first dog and I became best friends, and I was deeply hurt when he left me and went to Dog Heaven. And then there was Papa's dog, a feist named Fritzie, a small dog, and he always followed Papa right at his heels. Fritzie made just enough impression on this little boy that I mention him, but he was truly Papa's dog. When Janice and I were early married, we had a dog named Beau Winkle. At least, I thought it was "Beau," but my wife Janice thought it was "Bo." And by the way he
was always barking and nipping at the mailman's and garbage man's heels, I guess his name was Bo. To some extent it depends on whether your naming inspiration came from Charles Dickens and London, England, or Montgomery, Alabama, where Janice was born. In any event, we didn't get many issues of the "Watchtower" when we had Bo. And that was a good thing.
And, by the way, we got better at naming our dogs. At least I think we did. One of the best dogs we ever had was a beautiful Golden Retriever named "Governor." Alan Stone gave Governor to us, and we kept the name. Unfortunately, Governor loved to chase the UPS truck (that was before the City of Perry made you keep your dogs penned up). Governor got too close and was gone. It kinda' reminded me of my one-time fleeting aspiration to be Governor.
Mrs. Jean Nation gave us a black dog named Georgia. Georgia died of old age, something all of us will die of if we live long enough.
Then there was Tux, black with white on her neck, and thus Tux. We had a farm in South Houston County, SoHo One, and Tux would stay two days with us on the weekends and five days during the week with Mr. Keith Felder. I wrote a story about this: "Better to have a two seventh's interest in a good dog than a five seventh's interest in a sorry dog." And it's true! Sadly, Tux crossed Highway 26 that separated us from Mr. Felder one too many times, and she was gone. We were sad and still think about this smart, cunning dog.
And then there were our Soho Two dogs, Hershey and Cloie. Hershey was the sweetest dog in America. At least Janice and I thought so. We never heard Hershey growl at anyone not even another dog. She liked to ride in the back of the pickup and to get in the ponds. She loved treats and,
most of all, the leftovers from Domino's Pizza. And then she was gone. And we were big time sad. And we miss her very much. She was cremated. And I still get Hershey's urn out and wipe the tears away and wish I could see her again.
And lastly, but the hardest dog to write about, was Cloie. She followed our son, Russell, who was riding his bike from Clopine Lake Road (thus Cloie) to our house, and never left. This "put out dog" would not leave and thanks to the good Lord that she didn't.
Cloie, who I believe was part Lab and part bird dog, was the ultimate survivor and the most interesting dog I ever saw. We fed her every day, but she still ran through the fields and made the grasshoppers hop-up so she could catch and eat them. She also caught turtles, turned them on their backs and played with them and then they would disappear did they get back in the water or did she eat them? She would crack our pecans and eat them. And she would fish almost every day catching fish and eating them in their entirety! Not a morsel left. She was not a catch and release dog but a catch and eat dog. And then she was gone. And I was not ready for this. And I'm still not ready for it. And she's been gone for a couple of years, and we still can't bring ourselves to get another dog.
I guess when you've had Blackie, Bo Winkle, Governor, Georgia, Tux, Hershey, and Cloie and a dozen other good dogs, and a few marginals, it's just hard to get another one. How could they possibly match up to Tux and Cloie? Maybe, we'll see. But we're not ready yet.
And yes, when Cloie came up with Russell and we let her stay, I thought: "What a lucky Dog." But Janice and I were really "the lucky ones."
I guess this was a Good Dogs Story and not a Good Dog Story. And I still like dogs better than cats.
Mercer Medical Moment: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
By Veronica Prince
Second year MD student
Mercer University School of Medicine
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness about this common disease. Breast cancer affects one in eight women within the United States, making it among the most common form of cancer in women and the most common in black women. In 2021, it is estimated that more than 330,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed. Within the United States, there are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors, underscoring the importance of increased public education regarding this disease. Breast cancer is a disease in which breast tissue grows out of control. Breast cancer can begin in different parts of the breast: lobules (milk producing parts), ducts (milk conducting parts), or connective tissue (parts holding everything together). Most breast cancers begin in the lobules or ducts. When breast cancer spreads outside of the breast anatomy to other parts of the body, it is said to have metastasized. Breast cancer is most often found in women, but men can get breast cancer too. About one out of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is found in a man. Signs and Symptoms Symptoms of breast cancer are vast but can be grouped in the following categories:
A change in how the breast or nipple feels Nipple tenderness or thickening in or near the breast or underarm area. A change in the skin texture or an enlargement of pores in the skin of the breast.
A lump in the breast.
A change in the breast or nipple appearance Any unexplained change in the size or shape of the
breast. Dimpling anywhere on the breast. Unexplained one-sided breast swelling. Unexplained shrinkage of one breast. Recent asymmetry of the breasts. A nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted. The skin of the breast, areola, or nipple becomes scaly,
red, or swollen or may have ridges or pitting (orange peel appearance).
Any nipple discharge, particularly clear discharge or bloody discharge
Let your doctor know about any nipple discharge clear, bloody, or milky.
The most concerning discharges are bloody or clear.
Risk Factors The known risk factors for breast cancer can be catego-
rized as modifiable or non-modifiable. Non-modifiable risk factors are those you cannot change including: aging (most cases are diagnosed over the age of 50). genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2). reproductive history (menstrual periods before age 12 and
starting menopause after age 55). dense breasts (breasts containing more connective tissue). personal or family history of breast cancer. previous radiation therapy.
Modifiable risk factors are those you can change such as oral contraceptive use, certain forms of hormone replacement therapy, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption.
Early detection through breast self-exams Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast
self-exams at least once a month as 40 percent of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who notice changes during self-examination. Here are some recommendations for a doing a thorough self-exam. Place the pads of your 3 middle fingers against the entire
breast and armpit area pressing down with light, medium, and firm pressure. Check both breasts each month feeling for any lump, thickening, hardened knot, or any other breast changes. Look for changes in the contour, swelling, or dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Left and right breasts will not exactly match so look for any dimpling, puckering, or changes, particularly on one side. Squeeze the nipple to check for discharge and lumps.
While mammograms can detect cancer before you feel a lump, breast self-exams help familiarize patients with how their breasts look and feel so they can alert their healthcare professional if there are any changes. A mammogram is an x-ray that allows a specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas. The breast is exposed to a small dose of ionizing radiation that produces an image of the breast tissue.
Women aged 40 and older should have mammograms every one or two years. Upon the advice of a healthcare provider, women with a family history of breast cancer may start screening mammograms earlier than age 40.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the countless lives impacted by breast cancer, each woman is encouraged to perform a monthly breast self-examination. Women aged 40 and older should also take this opportunity to schedule an annual mammogram appointment with a qualified health provider.

Georgia Equine Rescue League sponsors the 11th annual stallion to
gelding clinics
The Georgia Equine Rescue League is sponsoring the 11th annual stallion to gelding clinics starting in October. More than 1,212 stallions have been gelded since the clinic's inception.
For just $100 per equine, Georgia residents can have their horses, donkeys and minis castrated by licensed veterinarians who are hosting the clinics. In addition to the owners' payments, participating veterinarians will receive $75 from GERL.
A current Tetanus vaccination and negative Coggins test are required. These procedures can also be done at the stallion to gelding clinics at the owners' cost.
For more information, contact Marian Finco at 706.340.4368, or go to the GERL website at gerlltd.org and click on Events/Programs, then Stallion to Gelding.

Georgie's Drive Thru the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! Recently, I spent some time at the Georgia National Fair, held every October at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry. I saw a calf being born in the Georgia Grown Baby Barn (and heard its first word moo!), watched members of the Georgia General Assembly show sheep in the annual Legislative Livestock Showdown (the Senate won!), took a spin on the ferris wheel, and snacked on a red velvet funnel cake. Yum, yum! The fairgrounds host other fun events year-round, such as horse shows, livestock competitions, book sales, and a rodeo. I'll be back down there Nov. 1113 to attend the Georgia National Antique Agriculture Show and the Perry Swap Meet and Auto Show. Who knows, I just might find myself a new (old) ride while I'm there.

Metro Atlanta growers benefit from expertise offered by new chapter of Georgia Young Farmers Association
By Jay Jones
jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
A group of new farmers is organizing a Young Farmers of Georgia chapter for Metro Atlanta, the first state chapter to focus on urban farming. They are looking to help people like Maggie Lee, who is starting a small farm in south Fulton County.
Lee and her husband purchased six acres that were a part of a former horse farm in the city of South Fulton. Both are professionals in the city; she is a freelance journalist, and he is a certified public accountant. The couple has a business plan and a willingness to work. Now all they need is direction.
"I'm pretty excited about the young farmers classes that are coming up in South Fulton," Lee said. "I think I'm going to be able to learn some marketing there because that's going to be the big challenge for me. And I don't know how to do marketing. How do I sell what I grow? Where do I go?"
The Georgia Young Farmers Association is an extension of the high school agricultural education program in Georgia. The program operates under the direction and supervision of the Georgia Department of Education and local agriculture departments in the high schools. The association provides resources, such as pooling farm equipment for onetime use, along with education programs and workshops.
With 5,900 members across 55 county chapters, the association also serves as a professional network for people to learn from each other locally and across the state.
Learning from each other is the goal for the new chapter. Traves Hyman, the agricultural teacher at Creekside High School in Fairburn, is an organizer of the chapter.
Hyman said people in Metro Atlanta have always been interested in agriculture, but that interest grew following the shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic last year. The burgeoning community of young urban farmers are hoping to serve consumers focused on buying local. Hyman said the young farmer chapter in Fulton County could help these small farmers start a new career.
"Of course, we want to target those who are in production farming, but a young farmer chapter from, say, Tift County,
Bill Crumpler shows a cantaloupe in his garden. Through contacts in a growing farming community in Atlanta, Crumpler has found more space to cultivate and keeps bees for another garden that supplies local restaurants specializing in locally grown food. (Jay Jones/GDA)
has a lot more row crops and stuff like that on large acreage," Hyman said. "Here, we're talking more about urban farming, where people are taking two-, three-, five-acre tracks and doing best practices on that land to increase their yield and increase the things that they're growing."
Hyman has organized some monthly introductory workshops for potential young farmer members and recruited people with knowledge in certain areas to run them. He started in August with a workshop on building raised beds
and fall gardening. He hopes to keep them going each month as he can find people to teach them.
Bill Crumpler is a small farmer who is trying to help others and get some help, too. He is a beekeeper and plans to teach a workshop on beekeeping through the young farmer chapter.
He started growing vegetables in his grandparents' backyard in Fairburn in 2016 to feed himself and sell to neighbors. He found that during the COVID pandemic that people were very concerned about getting food and saw a need to show people that they could grow a lot of their food in a small space.
Crumpler demonstrates how much he can grow in his garden, which has taken over his grandparents' backyard. He has several beds and pots growing tomatoes, onions, peppers, okra, eggplants, potatoes and other vegetables.
"Anywhere you can fit food in, I've used it here. I want to show people they can grow food for themselves," he said. "This might be a tenth of an acre here, but it's enough space for an abundance of food. You just can't imagine how much food you can grow in a small space."
Through connections made with Hyman and others, he has started growing vegetables in a larger space in north Atlanta. Crumpler is also keeping bees for Souper Jenny, an Atlanta restaurant that grows much of its own food for its five locations. Crumpler's bees pollinate the crops at the "Souper Farm," located at the restaurant's Westside location.
Crumpler hopes to continue growing produce and help people learn more about growing their own food.
"You really can't put a price on food without knowing what went into growing that food and getting it to you as fresh as possible," Crumpler said.
