Global Growers finds new site for community farm

Rockdale County land will serve low-wealth growers

By Jay Jones jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
Global Growers Network, an Atlanta-based non-profit that works with immigrant farmers, recently purchased a 23-acre farm near Conyers that will serve as its flagship property. The organization currently operates eight farms and garden sites in the metro Atlanta area.

Agriculture is better in Metter
Georgia Grown Innovation Center gives small businesses a boost
By Amy Carter amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov

METTER Farming, by nature, is a lonely business. But the City of Metter, Georgia Southern University, and Georgia Grown are partnering to make it less so by providing the first agribusiness incubator to entrepreneurs engaged in Georgia's No. 1 industry.
The Georgia Grown Innovation Center opened in October 2020, offering a collaborative environment where small business owners can lease furnished office space with internet and Wi-Fi access, share conference space and reception areas to host client meetings, network with one another, and tap into the expertise of faculty and students working through the Business Innovation Group at Georgia Southern.
The innovation center is the outgrowth of an economic development strategy drafted by the leadership in Metter. Situated roughly halfway between Savannah and Macon, the city is a popular rest stop for travelers along Interstate

Georgia Cooking: Peach and Blueberry Trifle

Ingredients 12 thin slices pound cake or angel food
cake 6 tablespoons peach jam cup amaretto, divided * 4 cups peeled diced peaches
(about 6 large peaches) 2 cups blueberries cup sugar 1 recipe pastry cream 1 recipe whipped cream
Pastry Cream 4 cups milk 8 egg yolks cup sugar cup cornstarch 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 tablespoons butter
Directions In a medium bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch until lemon colored. Set aside.
Heat milk over medium heat until not quite boiling. Temper the egg yolk mixture

by whisking in a small amount of hot milk, whisking constantly to prevent cooking the yolks. Gradually whisk in the remainder of the milk, stirring constantly. Pour mixture back in pot and cook slowly over medium low heat until mixture just comes to boil and thickens. Remove from heat, add vanilla extract and butter, mixing well. Allow to cool.
Whipped Cream Whip cream with a mixer on medium speed. Gradually add sugar then vanilla extract. Continue whipping until firm peaks form. (Whipped cream stands up when beaters are lifted.)
Assembly Use a trifle bowl or large glass bowl. Combine peaches, blueberries, cup sugar and 2 tablespoons amaretto in a medium bowl. Mix well then refrigerate until ready to use. This will help release the juices from peaches.
Spread cake slices on a cutting

board. Brush the slices lightly with remaining 2 tablespoons amaretto. Spread peach jam evenly over half of the slices then top with remaining slices. Cut each cake slice into 8 pieces. Place half of the cake pieces in bottom of trifle dish or glass bowl.
Top cake with half of the macerated fruit, spooning juice over cake pieces.
Pour half of pastry cream evenly over the fruit. Set aside 1 cups of whipped cream then spoon
half of remaining whipped cream over pastry cream.
Repeat with remaining cake, fruit, pastry cream and whipped cream. Smooth whipped cream evenly on top. Use reserved whipped cream to pipe decorative rosettes.
You can garnish with additional peaches and blueberries if desired. If you decide to do this, melt a little peach jam in microwave and brush over fruit to glaze and to prevent

discoloring.
Refrigerate several hours before serving to allow cake to absorb juices. Serves 12 -16.
*You can substitute 2 tablespoons sugar heated with 2 tablespoons water until dissolved and syrupy.

Fort Valley State receives donation in honor of `Critter Fixers: Country Vets' TV show stars

By Mechell Clark McCrary Fort Valley State University
Fort Valley State University received a commitment of $50,000 from National Geographic for a full-time undergraduate student majoring in veterinary technology. The media conglomerate including television's Nat Geo WILD, announced it will make the donation in honor of FVSU alums, Drs. Terrence Ferguson and Vernard Hodges. The scholarship will be awarded to a student demonstrating financial need and used to pay for tuition, books, supplies, and other fees included in the cost of education.
Ferguson and Hodges majored in veterinary technology while at FVSU and are the current stars of the Critter Fixers: Country Vets television show airing on Nat Geo WILD. Both are among the few African American veterinarians in the nation.
"I am extremely proud of National Geographic's support of diversity and beyond excited to
Dr. Vernard Hodges and Dr. Terrence Ferguson in a photo pulled from their Facebook page, taken during a promotional visit to New York City in May. (Special Photo)

have this scholarship awarded to a deserving student in our honor," said Hodges. "Less than two percent of veterinarians in the country are black and this scholarship shows how much National Geographic supports the mission of our alma mater."
Dr. Anthony Holloman, vice president of advancement, and executive director for the Fort Valley State University Foundation also expressed gratitude for National Geographic's support of black veterinarians.
"This scholarship will help create a real career pathway for a student who aspires to become a veterinarian," said Holloman. "It will also further highlight the outstanding academic opportunities that exist here at FVSU for prospective students to study veterinary technology especially students from underrepresented communities."
Nat Geo WILD announced it will renew Critter Fixers for a third season starting in Spring 2022. The show follows Hodges and Ferguson as they encounter unique cases caring for animals between emergency visits to their office and farm calls throughout rural Georgia. The second season is airing now.

Georgie's Drive Thru Abbeville
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 in-

dustry, agriculture! This time of year is blueberry season. Like many other crops in Georgia, blueberry farmers now use more mechanical harvesters to gather their crops faster, safer, and with less people. The other day, I traveled to Anna's Garden in Wilcox County to see a blueberry harvester at work. The machine, produced by Haven Harvesters in South Haven, Mich., straddles each row of bushes as it glides through the field. As the bushes go into the front of the machine, four sets of mechanical fingers move back and forth to shake them and remove only the ripest fruit. The fruit moves on a series of conveyor belts and finally lands in a basket on the top platform of the machine. When the harvester is full, the driver pulls onto a clear spot and hydraulic cylinders lower the machine down flat on the ground to unload whole pallets of fresh blueberries. The machine is operated at just the right speed to preserve the immature berries for harvest later.

UGA Weather Network celebrates 30 years of service to agriculture in Georgia

By Pam Knox
University of Georgia
On June 1, 1991, the first agricultural weather station operated by the University of Georgia began transmitting data from Griffin. Since then, the UGA Weather Network has grown to include 87 stations scattered across the state, providing weather data to a variety of users. This 30-year record of continuous weather data makes the UGA Weather Network one of the oldest state weather networks in the country.
The network, originally known as the Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network, was the brainchild of Gerrit Hoogenboom, an adjunct professor in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the UGA College of Engineering. He placed the first four stations at UGA facilities around the state in Griffin, Tifton, Midville, and Watkinsville and directed the network until 2010. He was followed by Ian Flitcroft, who retired in 2018.
Hoogenboom, now a professor and preeminent scholar at the University of Florida, still uses the UGA weather data as inputs in his ongoing Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) training classes that are offered each summer on the Griffin campus.
"One of the main goals of the network when it was initiated was to be able to provide access to near real-time weather data for the main agricultural regions across Georgia. That's why we installed an automated weather station first at each of the Research and Education Centers," said Hoogenboom. "We were also interested in observing variables that are important for agriculture beyond temperature and precipitation, including solar radiation, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, soil temperature at different depths, and pan evaporation. Since installing the weather stations another goal has been to add value to the collected weather data by providing simple decision support systems for degree-days, chilling hours, etc."
The network also played a major role during the 1996 Olympics when stations were installed at six Olympic venues in the state, including the whitewater canoeing venue in Tennessee and around Georgia in Conyers, Savannah, Gainesville, and Jonesboro to provide information four times per day on sky conditions, visibility, temperature, dewpoint

UGA Weather Network Director Pam Knox checks one of the data-
logger boxes maintained by the network. All of the observational
instruments connect to the data-logger, which collects and transmits
weather data at 15-minute intervals, which is then disseminated
through the UGA Weather Network website. (Special photo)
temperature, pressure, wind speed and direction, and rainfall amounts.
"The weather data were used by the National Weather Service for now-casting during the Olympics," Hoogenboom said. "The assimilation of the additional surface weather data by the forecast models proved to be a key factor in improving the accuracy of the forecast products and achieving the National Weather Service's goal of providing both real-time weather information and spot forecast products in support of the summer games."
By 2000, the network had grown to 36 stations, and now includes 87 stations around the state, plus a legacy station in Costa Rica at a former UGA facility there. Most of the stations are in agricultural areas and measure not only weather information like temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and humidity, but also agriculturally important variables like solar radiation and soil moisture and temperature at three levels.
Information is collected every 15 minutes and disseminat-

ed through the UGA Weather Network website. Several tools to calculate chill hours, degree days and evapotranspiration are also available online. Some historical data is made available through the website, but additional information can be requested by emailing aemn@uga.edu.
Farmers and UGA Cooperative Extension agents use the information to help determine when to plant crops and to monitor crop development. The information is also used by the Georgia Forestry Commission to augment fire-monitoring activities and by conventional and solar utilities to assist with load forecasting and to help place new equipment.
The network is funded through UGA, grants from several commodity groups and data sales. UGA supports the work of three full-time personnel, a half-time technician, and a data specialist whose positions are supported by data sales. These team members visit and maintain the stations regularly, calibrate equipment, quality control data, and even mow the grass to make sure the stations are reporting accurate information.
The National Weather Service is currently the largest purchaser of data from the UGA Weather Network. The network data are used to augment the National Weather Service network of airport stations and cooperative observers to provide real-time information that is used when severe weather or flooding rains threaten the state. In 2018, the station at Donalsonville reported a wind gust of 115 mph in the eyewall of Hurricane Michael. In 2019, the station at Cairo was narrowly missed by a tornado that passed less than 400 feet from the station the station recorded a peak wind gust of 102.5 mph when the storm moved through the area. The station at Fort Valley recorded 13.72 inches of rain on July 5, 1994, during Tropical Storm Alberto.
With 30 years of data in hand, the network group is in the process of creating climate summaries of the data available from the longest-standing stations. This data will help agents and farmers plan for future growing seasons and assess trends in weather variables over time and will be provided to users in the future through the website and in UGA Extension publications.
More information on the UGA Weather Network is available at weather.uga.edu.

Metter: Center unites entrepreneurs with resources to help grow new agribusiness in Georgia

16, which connects the coast with Interstate 75 and Georgia's heartland. Agriculture is the largest industry in that region, and Metter's leadership is working to grow it even more.
Prior to building the innovation center, the city branded itself as a Georgia Grown Community and made a commitment to promote Georgia Grown businesses by stocking its welcome center with their products. The innovation center was the next logical step to develop more Georgia agribusiness, said Heidi Jeffers, director of tourism and business development for the city of Metter.
"We knew the city was a foody destination, being on the interstate with all the restaurants. We wanted to be a part of Georgia Grown and develop a marketing plan around that,"
Metter is an official Georgia Grown Community, a partnership that introduces travelers along Interstate 16 to the brand. (Ava Jane Teasley/GDA)

Jeffers said.

Georgia Grown is an economic de-

velopment program of the Georgia

Department of Agriculture that helps

member businesses develop marketing

opportunities on domestic and inter-

national fronts. The innovation center

takes that a step further by nurturing

new and small businesses getting a toe-

hold in the industry.

"We see the innovation center as a

fantastic resource for farmers and small

businesses in that region and really

throughout the state of Georgia," said

Matthew Kulinski, deputy director of

marketing for the department of agri-

culture. "What it provides is incubator

space that gives those small businesses

the resources they need to grow."

Global Growers: Rockdale farm site was advertised for sale in the Market Bulletin

plan to build packing and refrigeration facilities that will help expand their distribution.
Global Growers partners with people from diverse cultures who arrive in this country with a wealth of agricultural knowledge, but insufficient capital or access to land to continue farming in America. Global Growers creates a shared infrastructure that includes irrigation, cold storage, an aggregation and distribution network, and farm equipment. Farmers lease plots from Global Growers and work the land themselves.
The organization's network across metro Atlanta includes more than 300 producers, many of whom are refugee and immigrant growers. Black and indigenous growers, farmers of color and other low-wealth farmers are also part of Global Growers.
Chanin described Global Growers as part business incubator and part farm cooperative.
The difference, she said, is that Global Growers does not have a deadline or end date for growers to leave the land. Instead, she said it is about helping people build and keep something to call their own.
"Our goal is not to (operate) like a school where you are graduating people and sending them off every year. Instead, we're looking for growers that are interested in a space where they can really build out and develop their businesses," she said.

Chanin is hopeful the farm will include an agritourism component in the future.
"Eventually, once our fruit trees are established, we will be having pick-your-own opportunities and various activities that will help us both preserve and share many of the multicultural fruit traditions among our grower network," she said.
The property in north Rockdale County has a long farming history. In recent years, it was called Simply Dun Farm, named for the Dun horse breed. Nigel and Cheryl Prichard purchased the property in 2004 and operated an equestrian center for boarding and lessons. Nigel said they bought the farm from a family who raised hogs, sheep, and cattle for many years.
The Prichards advertised the farm for sale in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin in September, and Global Growers was quick to show interest. However, the land is in a watershed conservation district surrounding Rockdale County's Poynter Lake reservoir, and the ordinance did not allow for commercial agriculture operations.
Rockdale County Planner Tanner Barr said his office had many questions about Global Growers' proposal for the farm. The watershed conservation district covers the drainage basin of the county's public water reservoir.
Barr said a series of public hearings on the proposed sale brought a favorable response from residents, and the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners approved the ordinance

amendment in February. "We were able to do a good job of communicating in what
we were proposing and not proposing, and from that, a lot of the folks in that community were very excited to see this sort of economic activity being introduced into their neighborhoods," Barr said.
The property sale closed in March, and while Nigel said the process was long, it was worth it.
"I've got a big smile on my face. Both my wife and I are delighted that Global Growers purchased the property and are keeping it in the farming community," Prichard said. "It is excellent for north Rockdale because, quite understandably, they wanted to protect the reservoir, and they have ordinances in place to do so. My hope that it will revitalize the agricultural area there because it has been difficult for families to pass their land on to others who would keep it in agriculture."
Global Growers offer an online produce
stand, farm tours and other resources
about their network of producers in the
metropolitan Atlanta area. For more
