Sweet harvest
Georgia's Vidalia onion growers have reached the home stretch for harvest. Vidalia onions are planted by hand in late fall. Locally machined plows like the one at left working a field in Toombs County lift the mature onions from the soil in spring, shake them off and lay them back on the ground to dry for a few days. Workers equipped with sheep shears complete the harvest, cutting off the tops and beards (roots) of the onions and filling 1,000-pound bins with approximately 20 bushels of onions apiece. A crew of 60 people can process 15,000 bushels of onions per day, gathering between 750 and 900 bushels per acre. The harvest began in April, and Vidalia onions will be available through the summer. Mercer Medical Moment: May is Mental Health Awareness Month

By Morgan Stinson, PhD, LMFT
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry
& Behavioral Sciences
Mercer University School of Medicine.
The weather is warming up and there are signs all around us that spring is here to stay. My wife and I have started to turn more of our attention to our lawn and landscape. Recently, we noticed a large pine tree in our backyard was showing signs decay. We detected that much of the bark and branches of the tree had fallen off. We grew concerned, wondering if this tree would survive a thunderstorm or potentially crash and cause significant damage to our house. We ultimately decided to reach out and get professionals to come and assess our situation. Through consultation, we decided the best decision would be to remove the tree for our safety and protection, and for the overall health of our backyard. Over the last few weeks, I noticed as I was driving to work that landscapers have also been pruning or removing potentially damaging trees or plants. There are many reasons why pruning is important. Pruning removes dead and dying branches and stubs, allowing room for new growth, and pro-

tecting your property and passersby from damage. Though winter and early spring are typical times to assess and prune plants or trees, any time is appropriate to assess and prune areas of our lives.
With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, this is a natural time to reflect back on our own lives and relationships and assess and prune areas that need attention. To help, you might consider the following questions: Do I have any habits that negatively influence my physi-
cal, mental, or spiritual wellness? Am I trying to do too many things, spreading myself thin? Am I engaging in pursuits that are taking me in the wrong
direction? What behaviors and choices do I regularly make that are
not productive, or even counterproductive? Are there activities, media, or behaviors in my life that
weaken my relationship with my spouse, family, co-workers, or friends? What can be pruned so I can focus on what is essential and become happier and healthier? Mental health is an important part of overall health and wellness. It is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Just like knowing how to protect and maintain our physical bodies as important parts of our whole-body health, our mental health and wellness also plays a vital role in how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle

stress, relate to others, feel, and behave. It is important to be able to recognize signs of distress and know how to manage those distressing feelings, whether that means seeking out services or using personal coping strategies.
Understanding more about our own mental health is empowering because it helps us gain a greater sense of autonomy in how to respond to information we receive about it. Many times, there are barriers that hinder us from recognizing that we need to make changes in our lives. People are not typically motivated to change unless they understand the value of making changes it's just human nature. As a result, people often do not get the mental health services they need because they do not know where to start.
If you do not have a trusted friend, family member or person that you can talk to, speak with your primary care provider or another health professional about mental health issues and concerns. Ask them to connect you with the right mental health services. Ultimately, the more we become intentional in taking care of our whole-body health (mind, body, and spirit) we are able to weather the storms of life more effectively and move toward living a life of meaning and joy.

Georgie's Drive
Eastbound and Down
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! I've been a lot of places and eaten a lot of meals on the road. Many of those meals were unforgettable, for better or worse. One day, I had a memorable meal at a restaurant in Tucker called the Old Hickory House. When I walked in the place, I got a strong sense of dj vu. When the waitress came to take our order, I ordered a Diablo Sandwich and a Dr Pepper. After Ginny ordered hushpuppies, Georgina ordered the turkey sandwich and Skip said to make it snappy, I couldn't for the life of me shake the feeling that I'd been there before. Then I saw a picture of Burt Reynolds and Jackie Gleason on the wall. That's when I realized we were at a truck stop that appeared in one of the most popular scenes in the 1977 movie "Smokey and the Bandit." Most of the movie was filmed in Georgia, with Jonesboro and the surrounding areas made to resemble exotic places like Texarkana and Montague County, Texas. The high-speed chase scenes were filmed on the newly finished Interstates 85 and 185 between Atlanta and Columbus.

They're here!
The first reported sightings of Brood X cicadas started coming out of Pickens, Lumpkin, Gilmer, and Union counties in early May. A resident of Union County shared these photos with Dr. Nancy Hinkle, professor of entomology at the University of Georgia, on May 3. Brood X emerges every 17 years in massive numbers, and the sound of their singing during the day can reach 100 decibels approximately the same noise level of a power lawn mower. Email photos and details of sightings to insects@uga.edu.

Larry For The Country: Blistosol, kerosene and castor oil

PAGE 9

By Larry Walker
lwalker@whgmlaw.com
On Wednesday, April 21, I got a very nice email from a long-time reader relative to my article in the April 21 edition of the Market Bulletin. George Scoville referenced my article, Just an Old Country Boy, and then lapsed into "Blis To Sol talk" and what its applications used to do for us. That gave me an idea: Write an article about what some of our medicines used to be type and quantity. So, here goes. I guess I might as well start with Blistosol, with a tip of the hat to George, and when we (I?) used it and what it would do for or to you and did do for or to me. A little history is important, bearing in mind that this was an earlier time. And, let me add that all old, former high school basketball and football players will relate to the Blistosol talk. First, you should know that the times were different, and shall I say, "more primitive." For example, when you were practicing football, even at the beginning of the season when it was 95 degrees, or at the spring practice, you were not allowed to drink water after the practice started and until it ended. You might practice for two

hours with no fluids, unless you were lucky enough to suck water out of that old, dirty towel hidden in the bushes. And, that's not all: After practice, you were required to take a salt tablet(s) "because you had lost so much salt" from your body. As I said, a lot of you older readers will remember. It's a wonder we didn't die.
Now, back to Blistosol, but first, let's paint a picture of the football "uniform conditions." Your practice shirts and pants, plus your athletic supporter, probably got washed once a week. This caused an abundance of rash, commonly known as jock itch, or by my teammates and me as jockey itch. And, if it became intolerable, one thing would cure it, and that was Blistosol, if you could stand the pain. It would burn you up, but it would kill the rash if it didn't kill you. I know and I remember. I've often wondered if the Blistosol didn't mean: Blisters To The Soul!
Kerosene. Perhaps, with the exception of aspirin, the best medicine we had. Step on a nail? Tie a rag around your foot and soak the rag with kerosene. It took away the pain and swelling. Same thing with a stumped toe or cutting your foot with your hatchet. I've done all these things and used kerosene. And, kerosene was good for helping in starting a fire and lots of other things. If I had to choose, I'd take kerosene over Blistosol.
What about castor oil? Let me confess. I am not an "expert" on this. But, I have had experience or should I say, an experi-

ence. I took it once, and still remember how awful it was. I think the cure was worse than the disease. That one time was my only dose. If you are over 65, you probably know of what I speak. If you don't know what I was trying to cure, just let me say if you need help in this area, use Metamucil and avoid castor oil at all cost. I'll bet that Metamucil has probably put castor oil out of business.
Country folks didn't take much medicine, and this was probably a good thing. My view: The taking of medicine by the American people is out of hand. I know several people who take 10 or 12 pills every day. Surely, some of this medicine is in conflict with some of the other. And, how much is being taken because of promotion by the drug companies, the drug stores, and television ads? I take two pills daily. One of them is for high blood pressure, and every time I'm checked, my blood pressure is outstanding. I also take a spoonful of Metamucil every night, just before I go to bed. Apparently, both of these medicines are operating as advertised.
And, by the way, I'd like to say that the best medicine I've had lately were the nice words from George Scoville in his email to me. Thanks, George. It made me feel better, and I'm going to try to do some things in the next few days to make others feel good: a smile, a call, an email, picking up trash off the neighbor's property, etc. It's good medicine for the recipient and for me. In fact, it's almost as good as kerosene and that's saying something.

Ag retailers in South Georgia win thousands on behalf of local charities

By Jay Jones
jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
Deep South Farm Center in Douglas and GreenPoint Ag Solutions in Ocilla were among the winning retailers in ADAMA USA's Thank a Retailer program that resulted in $10,000 to support local nonprofit organizations.
ADAMA USA, a crop protection manufacturer offering herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides to agriculture retailers nationally, held its retailer appreciation program in March. From March 1-23, the company invited farmers and growers across 36 states to visit their website and vote for their favorite regional ag retailer.
Regional winners in eastern, southern and western parts of the U.S. were recognized, with the top two vote-getters receiving either a $3,000 or $2,000 donation in their name to a nonprofit of their choice, according to the company's announcement.

Each first and second place regional winner moved to the program's national competition. Throughout April ADAMA asked growers to go online again to vote for their favorite retailer for the national prizes. The first-place winner received a $15,000 donation, and the second-place winner received a $5,000 donation.
"Farming is tough and requires a great retailer partner. Rural communities are the backbone of America, and we want to help these communities remain strong," said Brent Marek, ADAMA national sales manager. "Through this program, ADAMA is giving back to communities through retailers who play such an essential role in supporting growers and connecting communities. We want to honor their hard work. Thank you to all who participated, and congratulations to the winners."
GreenPoint Ag Solutions came in second in the regional voting and placed second nationally to receive a donation total of $7,000, which it is directing to three nonprofits: Called

to Care of Ben Hill and Irwin counties; Families Together of Coffee County; and the Coffee County Food Bank.
Kyle Barter, sales manager at GreenPoint, said he and his staff appreciated the award. He added the recognition shows the hard work his company has done to serve their customers.
"It is great, and it is reflective of what we want to continue to do in supporting our communities who support us," Barter said.
Deep South Farm Center was the South's first-place winner and received a $3,000 donation. Owner Billy Waldron said his company would direct their donation to Community Christian Academy in Douglas.
Waldron's family has operated the business since his grandfather started it in 1975.
"We are very fortunate. We are in a small town and appreciate the support from the community," Waldron said. "If I can only say one thing, it is `Thank you.'"

Busy carpenter bees can cause damage but are more nuisance than threat

By Stephanie Butcher
Coweta County Extension Agent
University of Georgia Extension Service
Carpenter bees are a common sight this time of year and can cause aggravation for homeowners. The large, black and yellow bees begin emerging in March, April and May and can cause unsightly damage -- and in some cases significant damage -- to wooden structures like the eaves of houses, porches and decks.
The carpenter bee got its name because of its ability to tunnel in wood with its jaws. The female bees create halfinch, round holes in wood to lay their eggs. Some signs of carpenter bees are sawdust that can be found on the ground or on the surface of an object beneath the hole. The holes lead to short tunnels into the wood and run horizontally with the grain.
Trusses, overhangs, wooden decks and other exposed wood on houses attract the bees. Female carpenter bees looking to nest typically prefer bare, unpainted or weathered softwoods, but bees will still nest in wood that is treated or painted.
Unlike termites, carpenter bees do not consume wood as food. Instead, they gnaw tunnels to create nesting sites and overwinter in the tunnels.
Female bees lay eggs in the tunnels until the tunnels are full. Male bees do not drill tunnels, but they are protective of their territory. The male is distinguished from the female by a white spot on the front of the face. Although bumble bees and carpenter bees are often mistaken for one another, bum-

ble bees have a hairy abdomen while carpenter bees have a bare, shiny black abdomen.
Along with their difference in appearance, carpenter bees can be seen darting and diving around as well as "chasing" each other. Female carpenter bees seldom sting but will if disturbed or handled. Male carpenter bees cannot sting, but they often become aggressive and frighten people by flying around their heads. Carpenter bees are also primarily solitary bees, whereas bumble bees are social bees that nest together.
Carpenter bee larvae are large and noisy. The noise they

make may attract woodpeckers, which can do further damage to wood as they hunt for the larvae.
Control methods If carpenter bees are not causing major damage around
your home, consider leaving them alone. Although they are not primary pollinators for many plants, they are effective at pollinating many vegetable plants like eggplants, tomatoes and more. In case of severe damage, the following are three methods that can be used to control carpenter bees:
Prevention is key. Treat wood with thick coats of oilbased or latex paint or stain. It won't make the wood "beeproof," but it does discourage the bees by making it less desirable to them.
Treat the tunnels. Carpenter bees are most likely to be in their tunnels in the late evening. Just before sunset, apply an aerosol insecticide inside the hole that the carpenter bee has drilled, wait 24 hours, then plug the hole with dowel rods, plastic wood, caulk or other suitable material. Do not plug the holes without treating the inside first because the bees will simply drill their way out and all of your time and energy will have been wasted.
Use traps. Carpenter bee traps are available at most lawn and garden centers, but results vary regarding their effectiveness.
For more information about carpenter and other pollinating bees, visit bees.caes.uga.edu. To choose an appropriate insecticide or determine the best control method for your property, contact your local University of Georgia Cooperative Extension office or visit extension.uga.edu.

Timber Growers: Producers ponder other options for timberland as earnings stay flat
Continued From Page 1

products could help timber producers. Barr pointed to cross-laminated timber made of bonded layers from three or more pieces of lumber as one example. Laying the grain of each layer perpendicular to the one next to it provides strength. The product has been used in Europe since the 1990s and is making small gains in the U.S. market.
Chatlos said Georgia-Pacific is always looking for new products, but cross-laminated timber has not generated enough demand from builders.

"We're a market-based company, so if there's a market for it, or if there's growing interest in the market, we will always look into it and decide whether there's value in it for us," Chatlos said.
Until then, lumber prices will remain high. "People are getting back to work and are building homes," Chatlos said. "As those orders are fulfilled, and there starts to be a surplus in homes, I think we could see the demand calm down."

Barr said timber producers might not have the time to wait for markets to turn. Instead, they could decide to repurpose their land for other products like row crops.
He said selling the land to developers for housing construction is ironic but also another option for producers.
"As long as we can make a reasonable profit growing trees, that's what we want to do," Barr said. "We really don't want to subdivide our land and sell it off in pieces because once you do that, it will never be a productive managed forest again."

Georgia Pest Control Association helps military veterans readjust to civilian life with charity, job opportunities in the industry

By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
The Georgia Pest Control Association is positioning its members as employers of choice for veterans seeking post-military careers by focusing its charitable efforts on helping them achieve a smooth transition back to civilian life.
Georgia PestVets is the first state unit organized under a council formed by the National Pest Management Association in 2014. Known formally as the 3/16-VSG (Veteran Support Group), the name honors GPCA Executive Director Connie Rogers the third person to serve as director since the association's founding in 1950 and the original 16 members of Georgia's pest control association.
The council's aim is to put pest control top-of-mind as a viable career choice for people transitioning out of the military.
"There's a litany of answers as to why veterans. They go through rigorous training, technical training. They are predisposed to have technical aptitudes, which marries well to the pest control industry. They go through a series of leadership academies. That makes them successful leaders. They have the competencies necessary for running a pest control route: autonomy, discipline, integrity," said Xavier Cugnon, vice president of human resources administration for Arrow Exterminators and co-chair of Georgia PestVets with Chuck Carney, vice president and regional manager of Cook's Pest Control. Both men are veterans themselves, according to Rogers.
Georgia PestVets raised $10,000 in March for the Veterans Empowerment Organization, an Atlanta-based nonprofit that provides housing, health care and mental health services, and job training to homeless vets.
"They've just completed a new dining facility and we are intent on filling their shelves with food," Cugnon said.
The kitchen at VEO provides three meals a day to 200 veterans, an endeavor that costs about $500 per day.
Georgia PestVets picks one cause benefitting veterans per year. Last year, the organization collected nearly 1,000 coats

to donate to a program for homeless veterans in Cherokee County. Branded apparel and merchandise are also available online at gpca.org/georgiapestvets. The proceeds support veterans organizations.
Introducing themselves to veterans seeking opportunities outside the military isn't the only focus of the Georgia Pest Control Association. The organization exists to educate the public on behalf of more than 1,000 members. Their message: That the industry's purpose is to protect public health, food, and property from diseases and dangers of pests.
"I don't think that consumers sometimes realize how much the industry encompasses," Rogers said. "We really try to get the word out there. We want them to be knowledgeable before they have a problem."

The pest control industry is regulated by the Structural Pest Section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, which licenses and regulates individuals and companies engaged in pest control in business and residential environments.
Rogers said the industry welcomes that regulation, which is among the strictest in the country. In addition to review and licensing of the chemicals used by applicators, the applicators themselves must submit to periodic training and review required by the state at intervals of two years for technicians and five years for certified operators.
Brantley Russell, president of the Georgia Pest Control Association, said the oversight offers consumers an assurance of safety.
"Where we go in people's homes, we go into the most intimate parts of homes. There's a huge trust factor there," he said.
The Georgia Pest Control Association, headquartered in Norcross, was incorporated Jan. 1, 1950, with 16 original members. Today the association counts more than 1,000 members.
In March 2021, there were: 1,281 licensed pest control companies
in Georgia 2,391 certified pest professionals 8,000 technicians
Revenue totaled more than $320 million.

MACON Gov. Brian Kemp talks with Lily Watson after giving her the pen he used to sign HB 498, sponsored by her father, Rep. Sam Watson, R-Moultrie. Members of the Georgia General Assembly and other state officials joined Gov. Kemp May 7 at the headquarters of the Georgia Farm Bureau, where he signed several bills affecting agriculture, forestry, and natural resources. HB 498 proposes to extend ad valorem tax exemptions for agricultural equipment and certain farm products held by family farms that form partnerships. It also adds dairy products and unfertilized eggs of poultry as farm products that qualify for exemption. If approved by voters in November 2022, the tax exemptions provided in the bill would become law Jan. 1, 2023. Kemp also signed SB 247, an administrative update to the law that governs Georgia's commodity commissions. Among other things, the law allows the commissions to publish notices of hearings, reports, and marketing orders in the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin and other farm-related publications to reach the greatest number of producers and citizens directly affected by those activities.
