Saluting Our GDA Allstars: Farm to School Coordinator Misty Friedman

By Gary W. Black
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner
Do you ever say, "When I get time, I will"? Or what about, "Someone should." Then there's, "That's long overdue." Well, I have time, and this someone is taking responsibility today. Because you've guessed right this column is long overdue.
Georgians are served by a GDA Home Team that is second to none. I want you to get to know these good folks better, understand their challenges and accomplishments, and cheer them on. I have asked our galactically proficient and creative Editor in Chief, Amy Carter who bats clean-up for our All-Star team every two weeks if she would allow me a few column inches to feature some of our skill players once a quarter in The Market Bulletin. She quickly agreed with a reply similar to the word equation in paragraph one.
Mind you, this will be a difficult quarterly task. Not recording accolades through keystrokes but selecting just one representative of GDA to feature each time. Georgia is blessed. I am blessed to work with them all. My first pick fits the All-Star description exactly: Ms. Misty Friedman, Director of Farm to School Programs, deserves the lead-off spot.

precise use of the descriptor "hand in glove." For GDA, students, and school nutrition
10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary professionals throughout Georgia, trust me, Misty is the hand and the glove. Misty joined our team after a frantic call I made to our former Marketing Division Director, Jack Spruill, following one of our first Feed My School programs in Madison County. Kudos to Melanie Harris, who helped launch these ideas 10 years ago. Melanie led the launch sequence for Feed My School. "Misty is our leader, Jack. Please call her today," I said from the parking lot of Comer Elementary School. Misty owned Feed My School that week. The community support, the school menus, and Georgia Grown art contest set such high standards in the early days of the program that Misty was a natural to take our school nutrition activities into the stratosphere. What an understatement! Farm to School is a cozy, fun initiative. But how do you feature Georgia's diverse offering of fresh fruits and vegetables in school-sized Misty, husband Rich, son Jack, and daugh- quantities, with menu items accepted by stuter Dalty reside in Commerce. Misty is in her dents? More bluntly, how do we help farmers seventh year with the Department. A classi- and feed students and not the trash can? cally trained chef, former restaurant owner, Conspiring with her husband, Rich and former school nutrition director, Misty again, classically trained chef and current fits in her role more precisely than the most School Nutrition Director for Commerce

City Schools Misty developed the widely acclaimed "Georgia Grown Test Kitchen Program," now representing over 30 Georgia school systems. She, Rich and school leaders from across the state have developed and implemented over 100 recipes that are proven winners at breakfast and lunch. Move over fish sticks.
Misty has secured special grant funding to conduct Georgia Grown Produce University activities with over 70 schools systems. One of the greatest accomplishments of "Produce U" surrounds equipping school cafeterias with the proper cooking utensils to assist in preparing fresh fruits and vegetables.
Last year, Elbert County School Nutrition Director Bridgette Matthews told us she had lots of excuses for not starting a Farm to School program: no time, no help, no administrative support, no funds, too small. But when a parent tagged her in a social media post about another school system's success with Farm to School, Matthews decided to take the plunge. In the five years since, Farm to School has been integrated into the classrooms, on the school grounds with gardens and greenhouses, and in the labs and cafeterias, where students collaborate to produce recipes made

Miniature farm machines are big with collectors

By Jay Jones jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
PERRY Among the behemoths of farm equipment of yesteryear at the Georgia National Antique Agriculture Show cotton pickers, combines, and tractors of varying shapes and colors Larry Coomer sat amongst his display of miniature machines.
Coomer, a retired truck driver and mechanic from Cartersville, was with his wife,

Claudia, at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter last month to show off his garden tractor collection.
"Oh, I've always tinkered on stuff, and I just like messing around with these mowers," Coomer said as he discussed his hobby.
He lined up 10 restored Massey Ferguson tractors from the small Model 6 (for the horsepower delivered) up to a Model 14, along with a couple of pedal tractors made for kids. Their hoods shone in the bright fall sun at the show as Claudia sat quietly by reading a book. Larry was ready to explain anything you wanted

to know about the tiny tractors. Asked how he got into restoring garden
tractors, Coomer scratched the back of his neck before answering that it was four years ago, shortly after retiring, when Coomer looked online and noticed a well-used mower for sale.
"There was an old boy in Calhoun, and he had that tractor right there for sale," he said, pointing at the Model 11. "It didn't have the original motor on it or anything. It was working and mowing grass when I got it, but it

Larry Coomer removes the seat of one of his Massey Ferguson garden tractors to show the transmission, which is almost as big as the engine. The yellow Massey Ferguson garden tractors are part of the Executive series from the early and mid-1960s. The red and grey models came later and were designed to look like the large farm tractors. (Jay Jones/GDA)

We second that emotion
Antique tractors are cool even when they're standing still, according to the expression on this young enthusiast's face. The Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter recently hosted its second Antique Agriculture Show in Perry and fans of all ages enjoyed a variety of educational experiences disguised as fun. See more photos of the event on page 16. (Nick Vassy/GDA)

Heirs Property in Georgia

SELLING HEIRS PROPERTY IN WHOLE OR PART

MYTH: It's not important to clear title to heirs property because heirs property status protects the property by preventing it from being sold.

FACT: Marketable title is necessary to protect and manage property especially since individual heirs' interest in the property can be sold, making the property vulnerable to forced sales. Any one, family or non-family, who owns an interest in the property, no
matter how small the interest, can force a sale.

MYTH: As an heirs property owner I can sell timber or produce from the heirs property.

FACT: A single heir does not have the right to sell timber or any other resource from the property without a written, legal agreement with the other heirs or permission from a court of law.
Doing so is a form of theft.

Market Watch: Restaurateurs rose from the ranks at Atlanta Farmers Market

Georgie's Drive Thru Buena Vista
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! Have you ever woken up with the strong urge to paint your house? Me neither, but a man from Buena Vista sure did. On a visit to his mama's house in 1935, Eddie Martin got so sick that he started seeing visions. During one vision, he saw a race of people he called the Pasaquoyans. They gave Eddie Owens Martin the new name of St. EOM. He moved back home to his mama's house in 1957 and started telling fortunes. He grew his hair long to be able to receive cosmic energy and started wearing turbans. After a while, he decided to bring to life the Pasaquoyans by making life-sized paintings of them on his mama's house. When he ran out of room to paint, he added walls so he could paint more people. St. EOM went home to be with the other Pasaquoyans in 1986 and left everything he had to the Marion County Historical Society. Since then, all of St. EOM's artwork has been restored and people from everywhere come to Buena Vista to study over 15,000 square feet of his murals, statues and artwork. The site is maintained and preserved by Columbus State University.

FOREST PARK Nine months ago, a dream was interrupted for Raul Montiel and Fidel Ibarra. Within weeks of celebrating the grand opening of their new restaurant, Don Burrito Grill 2, at the Atlanta State Farmers Market, they had to close it due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The men reopened the restaurant in August and are continuing to serve Mexican and American fare, doing so by following social distancing and health guidelines for dine-in service while also offering takeout and delivery.
"It was definitely tough on everybody, but we're still open and hanging in there," Ibarra said.
They started down this path six years ago by taking over a small restaurant operating on the farmers market's west side. Don Burrito Grill 1 was born.
At the time, Montiel worked as a supervisor at Athena Farms where Ibarra was a truck driver. Ibarra said they talked about it for some time, so there was no hesitation.
"It was a dream for me to one day have my own restaurant," Montiel said. "When I made deliveries to restaurants every day and saw how they worked, that motivated me. I saw how busy they were and the people who gathered there to eat. I wanted to do that, too."
Montiel said Athena Farms was supportive though sad to see them go. "They asked, `Do you really want to do this?'"
Don Burrito 1 soon became a favorite stop of market workers and visitors. The restaurant offers the standard Mexican fare of burritos, tacos and quesadillas but also serves breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, smoothies and fresh juices from a small building on the market grounds.
However, those first days were scary. Ibarra said the learning curve was steep, and it seemed they learned something new every day.
"I started learning and slowly catching on. Every year, it kept getting busier and busier to where it got to this point," he said.

Partners Raul Montiel, left, and Fidel Ibarra
opened Don Buritto Grill at the Atlanta State
Farmers Market after working to deliver produce
from the market to Metro Atlanta restaurants.
(Jay Jones/GDA)
Ibarra said he and Montiel wanted to put their mark on the restaurant and improve the menu.
"They really had a set menu, you know burritos, tacos and nachos. We talked to our customers a lot to see what they wanted. We added breakfast because everyone wanted it."
They were so successful that market administrators approached Montiel and Ibarra about moving into a larger space in the administrative building near the front entrance to the market. They opened Don Burrito 2 in February.
"Now that was scary," Ibarra said about opening the second location. "We decided to close the first restaurant for that day and move everybody over to the other place. It's another opportunity for us."
Montiel was more matter-of-fact about expanding. "It's hard work and some stress, but nothing you can't handle."
That hard work was put to the test with COVID-19. They closed both restaurants

in April due to the pandemic. When pandemic restrictions were lifted on May 1, Montiel and Ibarra were able to bring back their employees, but only reopened Don Burrito 1, their first restaurant located on the back side of the market, to operate as a take-out only site.
In August, the men reopened the new location, Don Burrito 2. The larger space there allowed them to offer dine-in service with socially distanced seating.
"We pretty much paid our employees out of our pockets for a time, but we were able keep it going," Ibarra said. "We were always looking to reopen the bigger location, and I am glad we were able to do it."
At both locations, Don Burrito has a juice and smoothie bar that Ibarra said has been a huge hit with customers. They use fresh produce from the market like kale, carrots, apple, pineapple and mango.
Also, customers have helped them out by offering recipes to them. Ibarra points on the juice menu to an item called a Green Erroll made with kale, celery, cucumber and apple that they named for a truck driver at the market who came up with the recipe.
Don Burrito has what is probably the shortest supply chain in the restaurant business.
"It's our main goal to get food as fresh as we can get it," Ibarra said. "Mostly every day, if we need something, we just go across the market and get it."
Don Burrito Grill 1 is open
7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday
through Saturday and is
located in Building 38 at
the Atlanta Farmers Market.
A new larger space, called
Don Burrito Grill 2, is in the
market's administration
building at the front gate at
16 Forest Pkwy, Forest Park.
The restaurant has dine-in
and take out service and
offers delivery through Door
Dash and Uber Eats.

Miniature: Garden tractors found popularity in the suburbs after World War II

Continued From Page 1
didn't look like it does now. That's how I started." Restoring garden tractors is not for the faint of heart. Parts
are tough to come by, Coomer explained. Whereas people may have sentimental memories of a Ford
Jubilee or a John Deere G tractor, most memories people have of garden tractors are of their fathers or mothers mowing the grass. Garden tractors manufactured before 1970 are difficult to find in good condition.
Replacement parts for the tractors are even rarer. For a plastic fitting around the headlights for the Model 11, which dates to the late 1960s, Coomer says he tracked down someone in Illinois who owned the molds from the original manufacturer and made one. A pair of shiny chrome hubcaps yes, they made hubcaps for garden tractors at one time goes for $400 per set of four.
Coomer said he works to get the tractors back to their original condition as much as he can. He pointed to a Model 8 with a good-looking black cushioned seat. He said it has to go.
"That's an off-market replacement seat, not the original," he said.

Coomer's hobby has taken him across the country to get parts or tractors. He got his Model 8 in Sedalia, Mo., his Model 6 in Indiana, and another tractor from Kansas.
He also attends shows like the Gordon County Antique Engine and Tractor Club in Calhoun and Florida Flywheelers show in Fort Meade. This year was the first for him and Claudia to attend the antique show in Perry as exhibitors.
To make the drive easier, Coomer purchased a race car trailer and built camper quarters in the front of it, complete with kitchen and shower. The rest of the trailer is storage for 10-to-12 tractors and a workbench.
The market for garden tractors grew after World War II when soldiers came home, started families and moved to the suburbs. Some of the early tractors were miniature versions of the farm tractors made by John Deere, Allis Chalmers, International and others.
Massey Ferguson garden tractors look like full-sized farm models. Coomer said he has also gotten implements for some of his tractors. Along with a mowing deck, Massey Ferguson

garden tractor owners could purchase blades and plows. Some of his tractors have 3-point or 2-point hitches in the back.
Coomer is a man of few words, but he does speak the language of anyone who collects, fixes and rebuilds antique equipment. He eventually wants to find a Swisher Ride King to fix up, noted for their single front wheel. His white whale is a Moto-Mower tractor that is extremely hard to find.
According to the online equipment database, Tractordata. com, other companies made Massey Ferguson tractors under licensing agreements. The garden tractors were discontinued under the Massey Ferguson name shortly after AGCO purchased the company in 1996.
But the brand lives on with Coomer's collection. He has 25 tractors, including a couple of green John Deeres mixed in with his red and yellow Massey Fergusons. Asked if he's ever sold any of his refurbished tractors, Coomer shakes his head, smiles and sheepishly says no.
"I guess I will need to sell them one day, but for now, I'm having fun with them," he said.

You never meet a stranger at a tractor show, just friends with stories you haven't heard yet. There were stories and smiles all around Nov. 19-21 at the Georgia National Antique Agriculture Show in Perry. Collectors from near and far brought rare and unique tractors and equipment, some fully restored and some not so much, and stood ready to tell anyone who lingered long enough what made those objects unique. There were plowing demonstrations, a cotton gin tour, and peanut thrashings using machinery from the early 20th century. The next show is scheduled for Nov. 18-20, 2021.
