FDA adds more products to its list of unsafe hand sanitizers
By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has expanded its list of unsafe hand sanitizers to include those contaminated with 1-propanol, a toxic and potentially life-threatening ingredient.
Young children who accidentally ingest hand sanitizer and adolescents and adults who drink them as a substitute for alcoholic beverages (ethanol) are most at risk of harm from these products. Ingesting 1-propanol can cause central nervous system depression, which can result in death. Symptoms include confusion, decreased consciousness, and slowed pulse and breathing.
Skin or eye exposure to 1-propanol can

skin reactions have been reported, according to the FDA.
The FDA is advising consumers who have products on the do-not-use list to immediately dispose of them, ideally in a hazardous

Georgia residents looking for corn mazes and other agricultural-related activities this fall should find plenty. Still, everyone will also need to be aware of safety precautions at venues to address COVID-19 concerns.
Across the state, many fairs and festivals have been canceled due to COVID-19. Or-

ganizers of those large events cited limited resources and cost to maintain health and safety protocols recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Lisa Salman, tourism director at the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce, said the community's annual Apple Festival was canceled this month over those concerns.
"We did because it wouldn't be profitable, and we couldn't follow the CDC guidelines," she said. "I mean, it's a huge draw 20,000 to 30,000 people on a weekend. It just wouldn't happen, and that was hard for us to do."
However, Salman was optimistic that people are still coming to Gilmer and surrounding counties this fall. She noted cabin and vacation house rentals are up.
The large events are not happening, but many smaller attractions are moving forward, including corn mazes, river rafting, hiking and camping. In Gilmer County, all the apple houses are planning to be open this fall.
"Fall isn't canceled," Salman said. Farm owners have spent the summer figuring out how to open and what they need to do to meet recommended health guidelines for COVID-19. Drew Echols at Jaemor Farms in Alto is hiring extra workers to wipe down surfaces and keep the grounds clean along with establishing social distancing guidelines. "It's going to be different for the employees and the people here on the farm, but we will get through it," he said. "We've never had any complaints about anything at our corn maze or our market being trashy or dirty, but we just want to put in that extra effort out here to make people feel comfortable." Echols said face masks will be optional on the grounds, but may be required on

Fall fun is just a click away

With larger scale fairs and festivals cancelled due to COVID-19, this fall will be the season to discover new things. Travel expert Lesli Peterson offers some suggestions to make getting out of the house fun and memorable.
Peterson, who owns 365 Atlanta Traveler, a travel and vacation website, said corn mazes, pumpkin patches and apple picking farms are open for business this fall for the most part.
Going to attractions during off days, like the middle of the week, is the best strategy to avoid crowds.
"If you're going to go on a weekend, expect double the crowd," she said. "If your kids are doing virtual school, then maybe
take a Saturday to do studies and take a Monday to go exploring and look for those festivals that are lesser-known."
Peterson suggested trying lesser-known state parks to spend a weekend or camp longer. Amicalola Falls in Dawsonville is one of the most popular stops during the fall; however, places like Pickett's Mill in Paulding County or General Coffee State Park near Nicholls in South Georgia are hidden gems, Peterson said.
Cabin and house rentals are expected to be in demand this fall as people look for home comfort. Peterson said renting an RV or camper could be a better option for some families.
This year, Peterson said that a lot has changed due to COVID-19, so it may be a signal for people to change their plans for

Mercer Medical Moment: Back to school...already?
By Maggie Bridges Kearney, MPH
Mercer University School of Medicine
Second-year MD Student
To me, a Georgia summer is not truly over until peanut harvest ends, but for kids under 18 years old, this fun-in-the-sun season is ending. Whether your child will be attending school in person or online this fall, it's time to start gearing up for backto-school activities. This may include shopping for school supplies or meeting your student's new teacher. But do not forget to ensure your child is up to date on their routine medical checkups to get the school year started on the right foot. Across the state of Georgia, physicians and healthcare providers have been adjusting their office environments to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Whether your child is 12 months old or entering the 12th grade, check in with your physician to see if your child needs a physical or an immunization before school begins. In addition to routine wellness check-ups, it's a great time to schedule an appointment for a yearly dental and eye exam. Despite the current pandemic, maintain these annual visits so your healthcare providers can assist you in keeping your child well, happy and healthy. Unfortunately, we don't yet have a vaccine against COVID-19, but we do have vaccines against many other illnesses, some of which are even more contagious. A great example of a disease we vaccinate against is the measles. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a
single person with the measles in a population that had never been exposed would be expected to infect between 12 and 18 individuals. With COVID-19, this same statistic (dubbed the R0 or basic reproduction number) is between three and eight individuals. To put it simply, a measles outbreak is NOT what we want in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, so please follow the vaccine schedule that your physician recommends for your child.
The CDC states the rate of childhood obesity has tripled over the last 30 years. The American Psychological Association recommends helping your child establish healthy eating, exercise and sleeping habits early in life to avoid creating lifelong bad habits. When you see your healthcare provider regularly, he or she can recommend changes needed to help address chronic issues like obesity, diabetes or asthma. Your healthcare provider is on your team and wants to see your child succeed.
When you take your child in for an annual visit, your healthcare provider will ensure your child is meeting milestones, and can address behavioral, physical or emotional problems. Per the CDC, about one in seven U.S. children aged 2-8 years old have a mental, behavioral and/or developmental disorder as reported by a parent. Your physician can help connect you to resources in your community, including testing if necessary.
A report this spring from the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 27 million people have lost health insurance recently, and more than 33.5 million have filed for unemployment benefits. This does not mean you or your child should go without healthcare access. For options for your family, check out insurekidsnow.gov. In Georgia, eligible children can receive no- or low-cost care for routine check-ups, immunizations and dental care. Don't hesitate to reach out to your local department of public health or your doctor if you need assistance navigat-
ing options. Finally, take this time to see about your own health needs
as well. When was your last annual physical? Are you overdue for immunizations? Is it time to get that colonoscopy? Hint: if you're over 50, it might just be time. Be sure to take care of yourself, too. Recently, there has been a significant increase in hospitalizations in Georgia, both from COVID-19 and from individuals who are not seeking primary care for chronic health conditions. It is safe and encouraged to see your primary care physician in person or via telemedicine. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and your doctor can help you address both.
Don't let COVID-19 stop you or your family from getting the healthcare services you need. See your primary care physician today.

Cook Georgia Grown:
White Chicken Chili (corrected)
Editor's Note: This recipe is the winning entry from Brooks County High School in Quitman for the annual high school Student Chef Competition held at Helms College in Macon on Feb. 20. Ingredients were omitted when we published this recipe June 17, so we offer the corrected version here. We regret the omissions.
Garnish: 4 oz avocado 1 oz shredded yellow cheese cup sour cream 1 oz fried tortilla strips, spinach and
white
Chili: 15 oz or about 8 pieces of
cooked chicken 2 cups Onion 1 Jalapeno pepper 3 garlic cloves 24 oz chicken broth (low sodium) 15 oz Cannellini beans 6 oz diced green chilies 1 Tbsps Cumin, ground 1 oz oregano tsp salt, kosher tsp black pepper tsp red chili flakes tsp Cayenne pepper oz margarine cup cilantro (save half for
salsa)
Pico de Gallo salsa: 1 medium tomato cup red onion cup green bell pepper 2 Tbsps cilantro 1 Tbsps lime juice
(Jay Jones/GDA)
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F to roast chicken pieces.
Blend cup of beans with a splash of chicken broth in a frying pan. In a sauce pot or steam kettle, add margarine and heat over mediumhigh heat to warm, then add onion, jalapeno, green chilis and saut for 7 minutes or until softened.
Remove bones from chicken and place in oven and heat to 165 degrees F.
Add garlic to the sauce pot and saut for 1-2 minutes. Add the chicken broth, chicken and beans to pot, stir, then add lime juice, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, red chili flakes, cayenne pepper and bring to a boil. Allow mixture to boil gently for 7-10 minutes. Add water to thin chili as desired. Add half of the cilantro and boil for 1 minute (the rest will be added to the Pico de Gallo salsa).
While the chili cooks, prepare the Pico de Gallo salsa for garnish. Dice tomato, onion and bell pepper and mix in a bowl with lime juice and reminder of cilantro. Let sit.
Serve chili with Pico de Gallo, sour cream, sliced avocado, shredded cheese and tortilla strips. Serves 6.
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! Although he only got a boulevard in Perry named after him, U.S. Army Gen. Courtney Hodges lived a storied life. When he was a child, he used to play army in the woods around Perry. He was childhood friends with former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn's daddy and the granddaughter of "The Swamp Fox," Francis Marion, a noted military officer in the American Revolutionary War. Hodges joined the U.S. Army in 1906 and rose in rank from private all the way to four-star general. In World War II, he led the First Army ashore at Normandy on D-Day. His was the first Allied force to reach Paris, the first one to cross into Germany at the Battle of Aachen, the first invading army to cross the Rhine River since Napoleon, and the first Allied army to link up with the Russians in Europe. Hodges' First Army was so good, they were handpicked to spearhead the invasion of Japan. He was one of only a few people who were present in France for Germany's surrender and for Japan's surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri.

Benjamin Bishop of Acworth grew 5-foot-tall marigolds for pollination in his garden this summer. (The tape measure to the left of the red arrow is extended to a length of 4 feet.) "I left normal marigolds to grow until winter. They grew to be 3+ feet," Bishop said. He harvested the pods and planted hundreds of seeds during a waning crescent moon. The plants flowered 120 days later. Bishop harvested a few two-inch seeds from the current crop, and hopes next year's crop of marigolds will be as tall as his corn.

Consumer Advisory: Hand sanitizers are secondary to soap and water
Continued From Page 1
Since June, the FDA has been compiling a list of mislabeled and dangerous hand sanitizer products. In addition to 1-propanol, some products have tested positive for methanol contamination. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and can be life-threatening when ingested. The FDA also tests for prod-
ucts with subpotent, or ineffective, percentages of isopropyl alcohol, the antiseptic/disinfectant contained in most hand sanitizers that are considered safe for use. Find the full list at www.fda.gov/unsafehandsanitizers.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to threaten public health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges
consumers to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing one's nose. If soap and water are not readily available, the CDC recommends using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol (ethyl or isopropyl).

attractions, like the wagon rides. Jaemor Farms will also reduce the number of people on wagon rides and run them more frequently for less wait time.
Other farms are enacting similar measures. Sleepy Hollow Christmas Tree Farm in Powder Springs will open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays. They are doing presale tickets to keep crowds at 300 per hour and are canceling school field trips.
The Buford Corn Maze in Gwinnett County will have temperature checks of all guests before entering as part of their health protocols.
"We are doing all in our power to make folks feel safe and are promoting social distancing in all our marketing," said Rodney Miller, a Buford Corn Maze organizer.
Burnham House Cottage at General Coffee State Park in Nicholls. (Special Photo)
Madrac Farms in Rincon said they would not have a corn pit a large play area filled with corn kernels this fall.
"No way to sanitize corn kernels," Melissa Ricks Reagan said in a Facebook interview.
Echols said he is looking for a good fall season and that the goal for everyone involved is to have a good time and be safe.
"I'm confident. We have some great farms across the state of Georgia with a lot of really responsible owner-operators," Echols said. "I think the public wants to be outside. I think they want to do something and what better way than letting them have that experience on our farms. I think that what everybody needs let's slow down a bit, let's regroup and get outside and have a good time."
Cheryl Smith, Georgia Grown Agritourism manager, said she has heard that most farms will be open in Georgia for the fall and expects a busy season. She advised people planning to make a trip to check ahead on the farm's website and

social media to learn about guests' health requirements and whether a reservation system is in place.
Fall Fun: Think outside this year
Continued From Page 1
the fall. She said to think smaller and different. She suggested checking out local convention and visitors bureaus to learn more about smaller but just as worthy events.
Georgia Grown's agritourism web page at GeorgiaGrown.com and the Georgia Tourism and Travel website, www.exploregeorgia.org, are great resources to plan a trip.
Here are some suggestions Peterson offered for something different this fall:
Railroads. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in Blue Ridge and SAM Shortline in Cordele offer day trips on restored historic train cars with stops in towns along the way.
Wineries, microbreweries and distilleries tours. Fall is a busy season for Georgia's wine, beer and spirits producers. Along with tasting events, venues may also have live music or markets for visitors. Georgia Grown's agritourism web page is an excellent start to find one nearby.
Outdoor markets. Market Days on Broadway in Columbus provides an open market with over 100 vendors along the street and is two blocks off the city's river walk park.
Stay at home. If you're unsure about crowds at events or new to hiking or camping, try camping out in your backyard to get outside. "I think there's still opportunity for people to go out and really enjoy fall," Peterson said.
