State, private partners link farmers and consumers through new initiatives
UGA Extension, Georgia Department of Agriculture offer new outlets to growers affected by COVID-19 disruptions
By Maria M. Lameiras
University of Georgia College of Agricultural
and Environmental Sciences
Georgia farmers and agricultural producers eager to sell abundant supplies of fresh produce and other products are being connected with consumers and other buyers who need their products through a new partnership between University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown program.
Because of disruptions to the industry triggered by the COVID-19 crisis, many agricultural producers in Georgia particularly smaller growers and producers are experiencing difficulties getting their products out to those who can use them.
Through its Georgia Grown Ag-products Industry Promotion and E-commerce Promotion programs, Georgia Grown a state membership program designed to help agribusinesses thrive by bringing producers, processors, suppliers, distributors, retailers, agritourism and consumers together will waive all membership fees for the service until July to help producers affected by the crisis.
"The first step is facilitating connections between consumers and growers. There are many people who are looking for fresh produce and cannot find it and we have producers who have produce and cannot sell it," said Laura Perry Johnson, associate dean for Exten-
10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary sion at UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences. Types of agricultural products that qualify for the pro-
gram include everything from vegetables, fruits and other produce to seafood, meats, dairy, poultry products and any other agriculture-related products, such as honey and prepared foods.
"We are getting a lot of interest from many types of buyers, including consumer, wholesale, food banks and some restaurants," said Matthew Kulinski, deputy marketing director for Georgia Grown. "This is a good way for produc-
ers who normally sell to restaurants to have a new outlet for their produce."
Georgia farmers who are keeping regular hours, providing curbside pickup, home delivery or e-commerce sales during the COVID-19 crisis can join the programs by visiting the Georgia Grown Ag-Products Industry Promotion or Georgia Grown E-Commerce Promotion pages at GeorgiaGrown.com and filling out forms that will add their information to a statewide database of producers that will be shared with consumers and buyers.
UGA Extension will support the program through its network of county agents and specialists throughout the state. "This is a grassroots effort that starts with all of our Extension agents, specialists and coordinators who have the relationships with these growers, producers and farmers," said Johnson. "We are working on several different ways to get this information out to producers and consumers, including our Extension website emergency resources page and through traditional and social media. Together we can make this into something that will not only help agriculture in Georgia, but the people who need access to fresh food as well." For consumers who are interested in picking their own produce, Georgia Grown also provides a pick your own list of all producers who offer that option on their farms. (See that list on Page 8 of this issue.) View the list of farms and markets by county at extension. uga.edu/ag-products-connection.

Georgia's Ag Industry launches `Now More Than Ever, Buy Georgia Grown' campaign
To help mitigate potential losses due to the COVID-19 response, the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown program has joined up with partners from Georgia Farm Bureau, University of Georgia Extension Service and Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Association to promote Georgia-Grown produce through retail and direct-to-consumer channels.
Georgia's spring fruit and vegetable harvest has an estimated farm gate value of $500 million to $750 million, and roughly 50 percent of that is traditionally marketed through foodservice. However, with much of the foodservice channel closed due to the COVID-19 response, farmers could find their promising crops have no place to go.
"The supply is there. The food is there. The quality is there. We just need to make sure the demand is there as well," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. "Consumers often ask what they can do to help our Georgia farmers and the answer is simple. Expect Georgia Grown, ask for Georgia Grown and buy Georgia Grown."
A mixed media campaign will encourage consumers to Buy Georgia Grown, Now More Than Ever. The collaborative effort includes PSAs, direct-to-consumer purchasing platforms, recipes and preservation tips for fresh produce, all supported by a targeted social media campaign using the hashtags #NowMoreThanEver, #BuyGeorgiaGrown.
"It is important that we support Georgia's number one industry, agriculture," said Georgia Farm Bureau President Gerald Long. "We are pleased to partner with Georgia Grown and the UGA Extension in helping remind consumers that our farmers feed and clothe the world by producing the finest food and fiber."
Consumers can purchase from Georgia Grown businesses with e-commerce and home delivery capabilities by visiting www. georgiagrown.com. In collaboration with Georgia Grown, UGA Extension is using its network of county Extension offices to connect agricultural producers with consumers looking for fresh, Georgia-grown products at https://extension.uga.edu.
"UGA Extension is excited to be able to use our statewide local network of Extension offices to help connect Georgia citizens with the farmers that provide delicious, Georgia Grown products," said Laura Perry Johnson, associate dean for UGA Extension. "It is in all of our best interest to work collaboratively to keep Georgia's top economic driver agriculture healthy and prosperous as we fulfill our mission to serve the state."
Agriculture is the top industry in Georgia with production and related industries representing $76 billion in output and more than 399,000 jobs.
"This is not the first time our fruit and vegetable farmers have had to overcome challenges," said Black. "In the last several years they have endured historic hurricanes, late freezes and trade wars. Georgia's agricultural sector is strong because our farmers are strong, and I feel confident that Georgia consumers are strong as well and will rise with them to meet this new challenge before us."

Mercer Medical Moment: Best practices for the new COVID-19 normal
By Amber J. Schmidtke, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Microbiology
Mercer University School of Medicine,
Department of Biomedical Sciences
As Georgia reopens in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, every family across the state is having to weigh their situation and make decisions based upon their health, finances, family and community. To help you make the most informed decision possible, let's go over the most up-to-date information we have on who is most at risk for developing a serious or life-threatening illness. Then we'll go over some best practices for keeping yourself safe if you are among those who need to return to work. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions such as hypertension, obesity and metabolic disease including diabetes, adrenal disorders, and thyroid dysfunction are more likely to be hospitalized or develop serious complications. For children, 50 percent have no known underlying condition. However, the most significant conditions for kids are obesity and asthma. Data from the Georgia Department of Public Health reveals that there are higher rates
of death among those between the ages of 50 and 79, males and black or African Americans. Of all the fatalities recorded to date, Georgia's rural counties have a higher rate than other county types. So, if you are in a high-risk category or care for someone who is, you'll want to be sure to limit your exposure as much as possible and consider staying home if you're financially able to do so.
Staying home is not possible for many, so here are some best practices to minimize your exposure when you're in public: Assume everything you touch is contaminated and that ev-
ery person you encounter is carrying the disease. We have widespread community transmission in Georgia. Wear a face mask but remember that you are not invincible when you wear one. Typically, people who wear masks tend to engage in higher-risk exposures than those not wearing them because they give a false sense of security. The mask needs to cover your nose and mouth, and you should try to avoid touching the mask, especially the front of it, for the entire time you're wearing it. When you remove your mask, consider it contaminated and do not put it back on. If it is a cloth mask, wash it in hot water with bleach and dry before using it again. Keep your hands clean. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Wash your hands often with warm water and soap for 20 seconds (the same amount of time it would take to sing "Happy Birthday" twice). Carry your own hand sani-
tizer and sanitizing wipes for when you cannot access soap and water or your usual disinfectants. As soon as you reenter your home, wash your hands. Consider making this a part of your home entry rules, just as some households remove their shoes upon entry. Limit your exposures as much as possible. Avoid unnecessary travel, appointments and errands. Always do your best to keep a perimeter of at least 6 feet around you. When you think about a task you need to complete for life or work, pause and think about the exposures you will encounter and have a plan for reducing them. Cover your coughs and sneezes. You can use a tissue, the collar of your shirt or your elbow. Avoid coughing or sneezing into your hands unless you can immediately wash them afterward. Throw away your trash when it comes to masks and gloves. Do not put others at risk by discarding your personal protective equipment in parking lots or public spaces. I know we would all prefer this pandemic to end as quickly as it arrived. But it's more than likely going to be with us in some form for the next several months. As strange as some of these new customs might seem, they really can make a huge impact on the spread of COVID-19. For the latest Georgia updates, visit www.dph.georgia.gov or email Dr. Amber Schmidtke at Mercer University School of Medicine (schmidtke_aj@mercer.edu).
Cook Georgia Grown: Easy Strawberry Jam
Ingredients 1 qt fresh strawberries, washed and
hulled cup sugar tsp lemon zest 2 Tbsps fresh lemon juice tsp vanilla extract
Directions Cut strawberries in small pieces.
Combine strawberries in a bowl with sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice and vanilla. Place mixture in a heavy-bottom saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring until sugar has dissolved. Raise heat to medium-high and cook until it reaches a temperature of 215 degrees on a candy thermometer, stirring to prevent scorching. If you don't have a candy thermometer, place
a plate in the freezer. Once the plate has chilled well, place a small spoon of mixture on the plate to check the consistency. Store in the refrigerator or follow canning procedures to store in properly sterilized and sealed jars. Find canning instructions online at www.GeorgiaGrown.com.

Gov. Brian P. Kemp, Dr. Kathleen Toomey, and the Georgia Department of Public Health urge all Georgians to wear a face covering in public settings.
A cloth face covering should be worn whenever people are in a community setting where social distancing may be difficult such as in the grocery store or picking up food at a restaurant or riding public transportation, and especially in areas of widespread community transmission of COVID-19.
Cloth face coverings help slow the spread of the virus and help people who may be infected and not know it from transmitting it to others.

Asian giant hornet in the news
Sightings confirmed in Pacific Northwest
By GDA Plant Protection Division
Asian Giant Hornet (Vespa mandarinia) European Giant Hornet (Vespa crabro)
Cicada Killer (Sphecius speciosus)
In December 2019, the Washington State Department of Agriculture verified four reports of Asian giant hornet. These are the first-ever sightings in the United States. Canada also discovered Asian giant hornet in two locations in British Columbia in the fall of 2019.
One of the concerns with the Asian giant hornet is it will attack and destroy honeybee hives. A few hornets can destroy a hive in a matter of hours. The hornets will decapitate adult bees in the hive and take the bee larvae to feed their own young.
There has been extensive media coverage recently about the Asian giant hornet, and the Georgia Department of Agriculture has been contacted by several concerned citizens. At this time, there have been no confirmed cases in Georgia or the Southeastern U.S. We encourage people to contact the GDA or their local University of Georgia County Extension Office when an "unusual" insect is discovered. This information is intended to provide those concerned that an Asian giant hornet has been found in Georgia with some images that may indicate the insect is not this invasive pest. This information can also be found online at http://agr.georgia.gov/invasive-pests.aspx.
There are two species of insects in Georgia that are large and often mistaken for Asian giant hornets. The European giant hornet (Vespa crabro) and the Cicada Killer (Sphecius speciosus). The table below contains images of each insect's abdomen. Based on coloration and band type, the insect in question may be eliminated as a suspect of being an Asian giant hornet.
