Vidalia Onions set to ship April 22

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner announces official pack date

ATLANTA Get those taste buds ready, Vidalia Onion lovers, because America's favorite sweet onion will soon be on the way. The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Vidalia Onion Committee announced March 18 that the pack date for the 2019 Vidalia Onion season is 8 a.m. Monday, April 22.
"With tremendous consideration after consultation with the Vidalia Advisory Panel, industry experts from the University of Georgia and crop assessments from the Georgia Federal State Inspection Service, I am pleased to announce April 22 as this year's pack date for the official state vegetable of Georgia, the Vidalia onion," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. "For more than two decades, Georgia's Vidalia onion trademark has garnered global recognition, reaffirming our trust in Vidalia onions being among the highest-quality in the food industry."
The annual Vidalia Onion pack date is a rite of spring for fans of the vegetable because it is only available for a limited time each year. The unique onion adored by cooks for its sweet, mild flavor is hand-cultivated in 20 Southeast Georgia counties by 80 registered growers.
Each year, the Vidalia Onion Advisory Panel, state agricultural scientists and the GDA determine the pack date based on soil and weather conditions in South Georgia during the

10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary growing season to help ensure only the highest-quality onions
are shipped to stores across the country. Last year, 9,356.26 acres of Vidalia onions were hand-planted to be harvested in the forthcoming weeks, according to Troy Bland, chairman of the Vidalia Onion Committee.
This year, the Vidalia Onion Committee is launching "The Sweet Life," a new marketing campaign to reach home cooks across the country. The campaign targets grocery shoppers who enjoy cooking and entertaining.
"The Sweet Life builds on our very successful marketing effort over the last two years that helped to raise the profile of the Vidalia onion among food connoisseurs, particularly millennials who set many of today's consumer trends," said Bland. "Now we plan to focus on a broader category of consumers who like to cook, entertain and use onions. The goal is to elevate the brand as a signifier of good taste and living well."
Vidalia onions represent about 40 percent of the sweet onion market in the country and are sold in every state. The Vidalia trademark is owned by the state of Georgia under authority of the Vidalia Onion Act of 1986. To be considered a Vidalia onion, the vegetables must be cultivated in South Georgia from a distinctive Granex seed and packed and sold after the official pack date each year, resulting in only the highest-qual-

ity onions reaching Vidalia fans each season. More information about Vidalia onions can be found at
vidaliaonion.org, and updates on this season's news will be shared on Vidalia Onion Committee's Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube accounts.
About the Vidalia Onion Committee
Because Vidalia onions are sweetly unique, farmers united to seek legal protection for their crop and its name. Federal Marketing Order No. 955 was established in 1989 to stipulate where the crop can be grown and help with research and promotion of Vidalia onions. The Vidalia Onion Committee administers FMO No. 955 and authorizes production research, marketing research and development and marketing promotion programs. This federal program along with Georgia state laws that protect the Vidalia trademark have provided a legal framework for the industry. So, you can try to grow a sweet onion elsewhere, but you cannot call it a "Vidalia" unless it is from Georgia. For more information, visit VidaliaOnion.org.

Gov. and First Lady Kemp join in the celebration of Georgia Agriculture Awareness Week

Commissioner Gary W. Black and the Georgia Department of Agriculture dedicated the week of March 18-22 to celebrating Georgia Agriculture Awareness week statewide.
"We should thank our farmers every day for the blessings they give us by providing the most abundant and safe food supply in the world," Black said. "But this week gives us that extra little nudge to take a moment to really appreciate the importance of agriculture in our state and the key role it plays in our communities and overall state economy."
Gov. Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty

Kemp joined in the celebration by participating in events throughout the week, including: Hands-On School Garden Day, Buy Georgia Grown Day, Ag Hero Day, Ag Literacy Day and Make My Plate Georgia Grown Day. Each day communicated the importance of agriculture in our daily lives.
"As Georgia's oldest and largest industry, agriculture represents over $73 billion in our state's economy and employs one in seven Georgians. Our state is a leader in peanuts, blueberries, poultry and countless other commodities, and our hardworking farm families put food on tables across the globe," said Gov. Kemp. "Agriculture Awareness Week is an excellent opportunity for all of us to highlight our thriving agriculture industry, and Marty and I thank the Department of Agriculture and Commissioner Gary Black for championing this effort."

Fort Valley State University Lowndes County Extension Agent Joshua Dawson helped students at J.L. Newbern Middle School in Valdosta prepare their school garden for a visit from First Lady Marty Kemp.

Robert Dickey named 2019 Georgia Farmer of the Year

By Sharon Dowdy
Crawford County peach farmer Robert Dickey has been named 2019 Georgia Farmer of the Year. He will compete against farmers from nine other states for the Swisher Sweets/ Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year Award.
A fourth-generation farmer, Dickey manages approximately 1,000 acres of peaches and 3,000 acres of timberland with the help of his 90-year-old father, Bob Dickey, his wife, Cynde Dickey, and their son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Stacy Dickey.
After high school, Dickey's father encouraged him to pursue a

business degree, so Dickey enrolled at the University of Georgia, graduating in 1976 with his bachelor's degree. However, banking jobs were scarce so Dickey returned to the farm with a new perspective.
"Although I had worked on the farm through my high school and college years, I did not fully appreciate the value and significance of my family's heritage until I came back full-time," Dickey said. "There are no words to fully express the feeling of working alongside my father on the land my great-grandfather, and namesake, initially planted in peach trees in 1897."
Dickey has made many changes

Vidalia Onion industry holds banquet

Georgie's Drive Thru Jeffersonville
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry agriculture! One day, I was traveling through Twiggs County on GA Hwy 96 when I spotted a huge white ball on what looked like a giant tee just west of Jeffersonville. I didn't know of any golf courses around Twiggs County and there hadn't been any giants spotted in middle Georgia since back in the 1940s, so I had to dig a little deeper. As it turns out, it's not a giant golf ball at all. It's a Doppler Radar antenna that supplies the weather images used by the Macon TV stations to predict the weather. The Doppler Radar, situated in the Fall Line hills of Twiggs County, can detect the amount and type of precipitation in clouds throughout the Macon viewing area, from Thomaston all the way to McRae. The information from the radar kept us safe during Hurricanes Irma and Michael. More recently, meteorologists used the images from Doppler Radars all around the state to monitor one of the worst tornado outbreaks I've seen since I was a pup.

VIDALIA The Vidalia Onion Committee held its annual Vidalia Onion Banquet & Awards Ceremony at the Vidalia Community Center March 16. Bob Stafford, executive director of the Vidalia Onion Business Council, announced Brittany Braddy from Mount Vernon as the winner of the Courtney Wilkes Agriculture Scholarship. The scholarship is presented each year to a student who plans to attend college in an agricultural or veterinary field of study. The scholarship is funded by the Vidalia Onion community in memory of Courtney Wilkes, a Lyons area teen who was tragically murdered during a family vacation in 2011.

Aries Haygood, vice chairman of the Vidalia Onion Committee, presented the Grower of the Year Award to Brett McLain of McLain Farms. McLain Farms grows Vidalia Onions in Toombs County, with many of their onions marketed under the Shuman Sweet brand. McLain accepted the award with family and farm employees, who, he said, "are just as dedicated to this farm and our precious Vidalia industry as we are."
Cliff Riner, production manager for G&N Farms, introduced this year's inductee into the Vidalia Onion Hall of Fame, Roy Kreizenbeck. Kreizenbeck is an onion breeder with Bejo Seed Co. and is credited with developing many important onion varieties used in the production of Vidalia Onions, including Sweet Vidalia and Pirate.

Commissioner's Column: Georgia Leads on Bioenergy
By Gary W. Black
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner
Odds are if you're reading the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin you already know that Georgia is Nature's Favorite State. Our state leads the nation in the production of peanuts, pecans, poultry, forestry products and blueberries. We are also among the nation's leaders in cotton, rye and many fruits and vegetables. Georgia farmers help feed, clothe and provide shelter to communities around the world.
However, did you know that Georgia is emerging as a leader in bioenergy as well? No other state in the nation has made more progress in its quest for renewable energy, and I am proud to say that Georgia's rural communities and farm families are leading the way. With an abundance of well-managed timberland, Georgia has quickly become a leader in biofuel production. More than 22 million acres of working forests make Georgia the top forestry state in the nation. Among the many forest products produced in Georgia are wood pellets, a leading form of biofuel. Georgia Biomass in Waycross is the world's largest biomass wood pellet facility. They currently produce and export more than 750,000 tons of wood pellets annually to Europe. International demand for biofuel is rising, and projects like the port expansion in Brunswick will help Georgia foresters continue to fuel international markets. The biofuel industry in Georgia is the third largest in the country, and it is projected to add $5 billion to our economy over the next decade. Georgia also ranks 10th in the nation in solar capacity. Last year, more than 250 Georgia-based solar companies helped create more jobs than any other state. In total, the solar industry has added 4,000 jobs to our economy, and a good portion of those jobs are in rural communities. Our large tracts of sundrenched land provide the perfect environment for the industry to grow, providing valuable, skilled jobs for rural Georgia. These renewable energy industries have grown rapidly in Georgia, and they will continue to flourish with the investments made by our federal agencies and the University System of Georgia. The Center of Excellence for Photovoltaics Research at Georgia Tech one of only two such research centers in the country is conducting groundbreaking research in solar technology that will lead to more efficient and sustainable inputs to the energy industry. Furthermore, the United States Environmental Protection Agency recently classified biofuel from managed timberland as "carbon neutral." This acknowledgement will bolster the biomass industry and demand for Georgia-grown biofuel. These efforts and our investments as a state have helped create the 7th largest Clean-Tech economy in the country with more than 43,000 jobs. Georgia is harnessing the power of Georgia-grown energy. Renewable biomass energy is not just important for a reliable source of fuel, national security and a cleaner environment. It also provides economic growth and skilled jobs in rural Georgia. The Department of Agriculture and our many partners throughout the state will continue to play a pivotal role in supporting this growth for a better Georgia and a better country.

New digital platform makes it easier to certify
animal heath when traveling with equines
By Janemarie Hennebelle, DVM, MPVM
Assistant State Veterinarian
Do you travel with your horse, donkey or zebra? Have you ever used a six-month Equine Event Permit along with your official Coggins form to move to and from different states? If your answer is yes, this news is for you.
Over the last decade or more, the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Animal Industry Division has relied on the U.S. Postal Service to deliver paper health certificates and Coggins forms, along with an application form, for Georgia equine owners to request an Equine Event Permit for movement purposes. Imagine the nailbiting and nervousness of owners who hope that their paperwork makes it on time and an Equine Event permit is returned to them prior to travel with their horses. No less the concern of GDA employees when they can't meet a customer's request in a timely manner. GDA has worked diligently with other states over the last couple of years to develop a set of standards for extended equine movement documents that are easier for the veterinarian and owner, digital (no government middleman), and accessible anytime an owner needs it. The result of this effort is the Extended Equine CVI (EECVI), a permit that owners can use for movement purposes among 21 states, with more states expected to join in the next few years. The current Equine Event Permit will be available through June 30, 2019. Starting on Jan. 1, 2020, the EECVI will be the only option in Georgia as an extended equine movement permit. The EECVI still requires an inspection of your equine by your veterinarian and a current, negative Equine Infectious Anemia result (EIA or Coggins form). The EECVI is valid for six months or until your EIA result is no longer valid. These are the main differences between the EECVI and the current Event Permit: More states will accept the EECVI for movement purposes. Digital format with 24/7 access. Your veterinarian inspects your equine, but doesn't issue any paperwork other than a Coggins, if needed. When you are ready to move with your equine, log on to the EECVI application and enter certain information, including your destination. You will also affirm that your equine hasn't shown any signs of illness within the previous seven days. Then download the digital Health Declaration and Movement Permit (HDMP) for that destination at no charge. States will accept a digital copy of the HDMP show it on your phone or tablet; no printing needed! As always, you can and will be able to move your equine with a standard 30-day health certificate (CVI) if you travel to a state that doesn't accept the EECVI or if you really don't need a six-month movement permit. As a veterinarian who thinks about the health of animals all day (every day), I expect this new platform to provide better information about the health of our equine companions that travel all over the country. I also expect that after the inevitable growing pains that come with any type of change, it will provide an on-demand application for owners with no nail-biting, no nervousness, and confidence that they can move their horse, donkey or zebra for six months in compliance with participating states' law. If you would like more information, call 404.656.3667, email AnimalHealth@agr. georgia.gov, or visit our website at: bit.ly/eecvi.

UGA Block & Bridle Club hosts 45th Great Southland Stampede Rodeo

The University of Georgia Block & Bridle Club will be hosting the 45th Great Southland Stampede Rodeo from Thursday, March 28 to Saturday, March 30 at the UGA Livestock Instructional Area located at 2600 S. Milledge Ave., Athens, GA, 30606. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the rodeo starts at 8 p.m.
For 45 years, the UGA Block & Bridle club has put on this renowned UGA event. What started as a simple fundraiser for the UGA livestock judging team is now a time-honored tradition for students and families alike. The rodeo chair, Caroline Hinton, is grateful to be a part of an event the entire university can be proud of, she said.
"I cannot put into words the pride I feel to be a part of this event," Hinton said. "For over four decades, UGA students have put on an event that has become a trademark of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. To carry on this tradition is an incredible and humbling experience."
The Great Southland Stampede Rodeo is operated entirely by University

of Georgia students with a mission of providing a quality rodeo experience according to the National Cowboy Professional Rodeo Association guidelines while developing skills that will allow them to advance both personally and professionally.

Milk Makes Amazing

Kroger partners with Georgia Grown to promote Georgia dairy products in stores statewide

The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown program is partnering with 168 Kroger stores across the state for the "Milk Makes Amazing" promotion. Driven by "Milk on My Mind," a dairy awareness program initiated by the Georgia Agriculture Commodity Commission for Milk, the partnership with Kroger aims to educate consumers about the benefits and versatility of milk and dairy foods.
"Part of the Georgia Grown mission is to support our local farmers by introducing our communities to some of the amazing products made right here in the state," said Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black. "We're proud to promote some of Georgia's most authentic products at Kroger

stores across the state." Guests shopping at Kroger locations
throughout the state can expect to see Georgia Grown milk and dairy products showcased through in-store and digital advertising. Recipes and video walkthroughs from local chefs demonstrate easy dishes to entertain friends and family.
Bainbridge dairy farmer Paul Johnson said the campaign will help consumers make informed decisions about their dairy products.
"The dairy farmer has such limited avenues to talk about their products that they sell, and with all the competition that's affecting dairy today sports drinks, water, beer, all the non-milk milks like nut milk and soy milk this is giving us an opportunity to

get our message out," Johnson said. Felix Turner, corporate affairs man-
ager for Kroger Atlanta, said Milk Makes Amazing will further strengthen the grocery chain's ongoing partnership with Georgia Grown. Knowing that Kroger sources fresh foods locally is important to its customers, Turner said.
"Milk makes amazing is a wonderful program, and it sounds like it will spread outside of Georgia, so we are part of something historic," he said. "I could see us doing many more things in terms of partnerships, especially through Georgia Grown, because Georgia Grown is so important for our stores and our customers are giving us phenomenal feedback on the program."

Farmer: Three generations growing

on the farm while honoring his family's farm history.
When he noticed other peach farmers were planting more acres while Dickey Farms' production volume left the farm's packinghouse sitting underutilized during the season, Dickey began to offer packing services to meet other local farmers' packing needs and to generate additional income.
"When I first started working at the farm, we were packing about 75,000 packages a year," he said. "This year we expect to pack around 400,000 half-bushel boxes."
To deal with drought conditions, Dickey invested in irrigation equipment and added lakes, wells and piping which "helped immensely," he said.
Over the past 10 years, the farm transitioned to low-volume drip irrigation from high-volume reels of irrigation hose to increase efficiency and lower the farm's water and energy use. Peach yields are up and disease pressure is low.
The peach trees are still planted in traditional rows, but the areas between the rows are intentionally maintained in sod. This environmentally friendly practice prevents soil erosion, provides traction for farm equipment, adds organic matter to the soil, improves soil moisture and provides habitat for beneficial insects.
Following recommendations from the USDA's EQUIP program, Dickey reduces scale on his peach trees by using oil instead of a chemical treatment. The farm engages in crop rotations with a local row crop farmer to improve soil fertility and structure and reduce compaction.
Dickey manages the family's timberland with the help of a registered forester and the Georgia Forestry Commission, and they continue to plant new and improved second- and third-generation loblolly pine seedlings.
Dickey's father continues to be a part of the farm business. "He's the farm's biggest cheerleader, encourager and mentor for both me and my son," Dickey said. "His memory is amazing, and he has witnessed some of the

biggest changes in the industry." Dickey has taken the farm into new areas
with ideas from his children and insight from his wife, Cynde Dickey, the farm's chief financial officer. She was instrumental in starting the farm's retail business and mail-order operation, which began 25 years ago.
Daughter-in-law Stacy Dickey promotes the farm's market through social media, employee training and advertising. The Dickeys' daughter, Marjie, a 2013 graduate of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, develops new recipes for the farm's bakery. School groups often visit the farm for educational field trips, which are now in high demand.
Son Lee Dickey manages the farm's food safety program and installation of new peach trees and new crops like 100-acres of pecans and two-acres of strawberries. The farm plans to expand its vegetable acreage to meet the local school system's demand for Georgia Grown produce.
"When Crawford County lost its only grocery store in December 2016, Dickey Farms stepped up and provided fresh produce in season to meet the county's needs," said Sarah Greer, the UGA Cooperative Extension Agricultural and Natural Resources agent in Crawford County.
Greer nominated Dickey and his farm for the Farmer of the Year award.
"Dickey Farms exemplifies all that it means to be a steward of the land. They are innovative and progressive," she said. "Not only are they an amazing farm that has persisted over generations, but they are outstanding community members."
In addition to his work on the farm, Dickey is serving his fourth term in the Georgia House of Representatives for District 140, which covers Crawford County and parts of Bibb, Houston, Monroe and Peach counties. He represents his fellow farmers on the House Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee.

As a result, we will be sticking to our traditional schedule of alternating certain Classified Advertising categories monthly. That schedule is posted here.
We will keep you informed as our software conversion continues, and we'll update you on the changes we'll be making and the ways they will impact you as soon as that conversion is complete.
