Current trade promotion efforts are focused on Taiwan

By Amy Carter

The Georgia Department of Agriculture recently welcomed a delegation of food buyers and suppliers from Taiwan as part of an ongoing campaign to cultivate new overseas markets for Georgia pecan growers. The late October arrival of the delegation coincided with the departure of the first shipment of specially packaged Georgia-grown pecans, currently ocean-bound for Taiwan.
The shipment has an estimated arrival date of Nov. 21, timed to coincide with a holiday marketing push around Christmas and Chinese New Year, said Steven Chu, in-market representative for the Georgia-grown campaign.
The visiting delegation saw the entire spectrum of agricultural production in Georgia, from the headquarters of GDA in Atlanta to the pecan orchards of Central and Southwest Georgia to the port of Savannah, where beef, poultry, nuts and

produce are loaded on ships bound for foreign markets.
The group's visit built upon an outbound trade mission earlier this year that introduced Georgia-grown pecans and value-added products to government officials and food industry influencers on the island nation that lies about 100 miles off the coast of southeastern China.
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black, Georgia Grown Executive Chef Holly Chute and Georgia Grown Deputy Marketing Director Paul Thompson made that initial visit to Taiwan. Among their meetings were 40 half-hour sessions with buyers and suppliers in Taiwan, as well as a visit to the Taipei Bakers Association, which hosts a major international baking show annually. Georgia already has a spot reserved at the March 2020 show.

Cane grinding, syrup-making at Georgia Museum of Agriculture Nov. 23
TIFTON For many Southerners, cane-grinding and syrup cooking are family traditions that have been passed down through many generations. The historic village at the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's Georgia Museum of Agriculture is one of the few places left where visitors can step back in time to see a mule-powered mill grinding sugar cane. The sweet juice pouring from the cane mill is transferred to the syrup shed where it is cooked down in a cast iron kettle to make cane syrup. The museum is having its annual canegrinding, syrup-making Nov. 23, where costumed interpreters will explain the process. There will also be live entertainment, educational programming, a demo of cowboy cooking highlighting foods prepared on the cattle trails during Westward Expansion, and rides on the museum's steam train. The museum will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Nov. 23. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (age 55 and over), $5 for children 5-16 years of age, and free for children 4 and younger. Rivals on the gridiron, partners in the lab
UGA, Georgia Tech work together to advance agriculture

Someday, apples in North Georgia could be harvested by robots modeled after Gibbon monkeys. Gibbons are an arboreal species that swing from limb-to-limb in the forest canopy, hunting and picking ripe fruit to eat. Called brachiation, or arm-swinging, their method of locomotion inspired the design of CAPBOT, an apple-harvesting robot invented by engineers at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
At the Southeast Regional Fruit and Vegetable Conference in Savannah last January, Ai-Ping Hu, senior research engineer in Georgia Tech's Food Processing Technology Division, introduced video of the robot swinging along a trellis erected beside apple trees in a North Georgia orchard.
CAPBOT, for Collaborative Apple Picking Robot, uses a "search" arm to identify apples and plan pathways for the "grasp" arm to approach and pick the fruit. Each arm is equipped with a color-plusdepth camera. While one hand can recognize apples and direct the

Partners in the Lab: Projects target every sector of Georgia's agriculture industry

Continued From Page 1

other hand to pick them, the machine can't measure the ripeness of the fruit. Georgia Tech is working to upgrade the grasp arm with that ability.
When the topic is agricultural research in Georgia, the University of Georgia is the organization most often credited with that work. When UGA and Georgia Tech meet in the same sentence, especially around Thanksgiving, they're typically colliding on the football field for another historic round of clean old-fashioned hate.
But what you see on the football field is 180 degrees from what the two schools look like in the farm fields of Georgia. There, they work in harmony and more often fullfledged partnership to improve the productivity and profitability of various sectors of Georgia agriculture. For example:
Ag Engineering Glen Rains, agricultural engineer in
UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is working with the Georgia Tech Research Institute to improve the peanut grading process. After harvest and drying, peanuts are manually sampled and inspected for size, moisture content, meat content, foreign matter and damage. Grades given to peanuts determine the price a farmer will get at market for his crop, as well as the loan value for price support purposes.
"It's done with the human eye and has been done this way since the '50s," Rains said, employing thousands of seasonal workers.
Through a combination of technologies that include a digital imaging that allows a computer to inspect and grade the samples, this collaboration aims to streamline the process and improve efficiencies.

Horticulture Mark Czarnota, UGA CAES horticultur-
ist, is collaborating with with biologist Ulrika Egertsdotter and Cyrus Aidun at Georgia Tech on the micropropagation of Abies firma (Momi fir), blueberry and stevia. The Abies firma could be Georgia's answer to North Carolina's perennial favorite Fraser fir, and this project is seeking a reliable means of propagating this conifer for the Southeast Christmas Tree Industry utilizing somatic embryogenesis.
The blueberry/stevia project is looking at a faster, more efficient way to propagate these plants.
Poultry Science It's only fitting that the lion's share of col-
laborative efforts between UGA and Georgia Tech focuses on Georgia's top agricultural industry: poultry. Among the projects in the works: Phosphorus removal from poultry-process-
ing wastewater using magnetic nanoparticles. The separated phosphorus would then be used as an inorganic feed ingredient for broiler chicks. Scientists are Jie Xu at Georgia Tech and Woo Kyun Kim in UGA Poultry Science. Development of a virtual reality chicken via CT/MRI to generate models for training of robotic cutting for poultry processing. Scientists are Sim Harbert at Georgia Tech, and Brian Kiepper and Laura Ellestad in UGA Poultry Science. Audio monitoring of rearing environments of broilers and broiler breeders to learn what bird vocalizations say about their health and well-being. Scientists are Wayne Daley at Georgia Tech; Jeanna Wilson, Bruce Webster, Casey Ritz in

UGA Poultry Science; and Mark Jackwood and Maricarmen Garcia in the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine's Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center. Using ice water slurry for enhanced anti-microbial activity. Scientists are Comas Haynes at Georgia Tech; Harsha Thippareddi in UGA Poultry Science; and Jeff Buhr at USDA Agricultural Research Service. Grow-out house robotics. Scientists are Colin User and Wayne Daley at Georgia Tech; Jeanna Wilson, Bruce Webster and Casey Ritz in UGA Poultry Science.
Geology Through NASA, Deepak Mishra, director
of the UGA Small Satellite Research Laboratory, will launch a satellite in February to monitor the condition of Georgia's wetlands.
"The satellite will allow us to look at things like carbon sequestration," he said. "Our wetlands indirectly impact our water resources because they provide habitats for fishes, fight against storm surges and help fight against coastal flooding."
Georgia Tech will report the data from this study to NASA through the Georgia Space Grant.
Crop and Soil Sciences UGA researchers David Radcliffe, Su-
san Wilde and Gary Hawkins are studying the amount of phosphorus being discharged into Lake Lanier by the septic systems of lake house homes along the shoreline. They are working with Georgia Tech scientists to decide what to sample on the lake transects and are analyzing the collected lake-bottom cores for historical evidence of phosphorous loading.

Nutrient pollution is one of America's most widespread environmental problems and is caused by excess nitrogen and phosphorous in the air and water. Too much phosphorous in an aquatic ecosystem causes algae to grow faster than the ecosystem can handle.
Animal and Dairy Science Biosecurity is a combination of practical
measures and standards to protect farms from incoming disease. One key standard of disease prevention for animal biosecurity is vaccination. An effective and inexpensive means to prevent disease, vaccination can also reduce the need for antibiotics.
To test the efficacy and reduce the largescale cost of potentially curative therapies that utilize living cells, like that of agricultural vaccines, UGA animal and dairy scientists Steven Stice, Lohitash Karumbaiah and Luke Mortensen of the UGA Regenerative Bioscience Center are working with Georgia Tech researchers to transform the manufacturing of cell-based therapeutics.
With $20 million in funding from the National Science Foundation, the Engineering Research Center for Cell Manufacturing Technologies, dubbed CMaT, brings together RBC researchers, industry partners, clinicians, engineers, cell biologists and immunologists.
The scientists are working to reduce the cost of generating more reliable therapies while conducting cutting edge research to address the critical needs of patients in Georgia, and train scientists and engineers who will bring new high-paying manufacturing jobs to Georgia. They will manufacture less expensive, safer and more effective cell therapies for cancer, heart disease and orthopedic treatments in animals and humans.

Taiwan: ATP funds fuel hunt for new markets
Continued From Page 1

said Taiwan is a critical market for Georgia exports.
"It's a growing economy full of well-off consumers who are very interested in American products," he said. "Taiwan is one we're trying to build."
Prior to the Georgia trade missions, it was a market saturated with California walnuts, almonds and pistachios, Chu said. Taiwan has a strong agriculture sector, growing rice and seasonal fruits and vegetables, but it's also a major importer of produce and food ingredients from around the world, Chu said. With 31 percent of all ag imports to Taiwan coming from the United States, America is the country's No. 1 ag supplier.
The new Georgia pecan marketing program and both trade missions were funded with Agricultural Trade Promotion dollars granted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the Southern United States Trade Association and the GDA. The ATP program was developed by the Trump administration to offset the impact of a lingering trade dispute with China, the largest sin-

gle recipient of Georgia pecan exports before the tariff war erupted. More than $200 million has been set aside for trade promotion of U.S. agricultural products nationwide to new markets.
"Pecans in Taiwan are an effort to `expand our portfolio' if you will," Thompson said of the massive marketing effort. "Pecans as you know were hit hard by China's retaliatory tariffs (from seven percent to 47 percent). We have been funded for 2019 for $368,000 and have in a proposal for 2020 of $570,000. ATP is good for three years so we would hope to continue this program for 2021 as well."
Kent Sisson, U.S. consultant to the GDA and SUSTA for the trade program, said other agricultural commodities will be targeted in future campaigns, along with different markets in Southeast Asia. Other funding sources are being explored as well, he said.
"It's important to diversify markets," Sisson said. "As we're learning, if you're focused on just one market, things can go south and you're hurting."
