UGA, pest controllers test technology against spray foam insulation

10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
On a typical home inspection, an exterminator needs nothing more than a powerful flashlight and a trained eye to spot the work of subterranean termites.
However, as more homeowners choose to insulate with spray polyurethane foam, even the most advanced tools of the trade make it difficult for pest control professionals to say definitively that termites aren't a problem.
The rising popularity of SPF insulation as a more energy efficient alternative has created a conundrum for the pest control industry. Whereas traditional insulation such as that made with fiberglass is installed between joists, studs and rafters leaving inspectors access to the wood SPF insulation covers the entire structural skeleton of the building.
"Once you cover all the timber with foam it's such a good insulator that we can't see moisture, we can't see termite damage, we can't see the termite trails it's all covered up," said Ed Freytag, research entomologist with City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control. "When I'm inspecting a building sprayed with foam, I'm basically blind. I try to do the best I can but really it's like putting blinders on."
Freytag traveled to Athens July 16 and 17 to join Georgia pest control professionals and Georgia's Structural Pest Control Commission in a research project run by Brian Forschler, professor of entomology and principle investigator for the University of Georgia's Household and Structural Entomology Research Program.
Working in the unusually ample crawl space of a building on campus that is slated for renovation in part to fix a known infestation of subterranean termites, the group put skills and tools to work in a before/after scenario to test the spray foam industry's assertion that infrared cameras, moisture sensors and motion detectors succeed where old-fashioned eyeballing fails in buildings treated with SPF.
Forschler said the debate between the two industries kicked into high gear last fall when Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black issued a consumer advisory urging homeowners to review their pest control contracts before installing SPF insulation. The advisory was prompted by pest control operators who could not adequately inspect for termites in structures insulated with spray foam.
"I've only been in one crawl space that had spray foam and the equipment that I have access to, we weren't able to see anything. And that's a problem because at that point you can't look a homeowner in the face and tell them they don't have termites because you don't know," said David Eubanks, an inspector with Flexible Pest Services

Spray foam insulation applied strategically in a crawl space beneath UGA's River Basin Center in Athens allowed pest control inspectors to test the latest technology for finding subterranean termites. (Derrick Lastinger/GDA)

The Gwinnett Stripers are hosting an Agriculture Night promotion Aug. 2 as the Stripers take on the Charlotte Knights at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. The Stripers are celebrating Georgia's No. 1 industry and the farmers and ranchers who work to feed, clothe and provide shelter for every Georgian. As part of the evening's festivities there will be a Georgia Grown farmers market inside the stadium and Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black will be throwing out the first pitch of the game. A portion of each ticket purchased through the event link will benefit the Georgia 4-H and FFA Foundations. Buy your tickets online at https://www1.ticketmaster.com/ event/0E005639C575544B.

GDA releases proposed hemp rules and regulations Public comment is invited through Aug. 12

The Georgia Department of Agriculture will be accepting written comments through Aug. 12 regarding adoption of rules and regulations for hemp growers and processors.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law House Bill 213, the "Georgia Hemp Farming Act," in May. However, only growers and processors licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture will be permitted to grow and process hemp in Georgia.
Since the law was enacted, the has been working to develop rules for regulating hemp farming. The draft rules are proposed under Chapter 40-32 of state law titled "Hemp Growers and Processors." The proposed rules cover the license application process and requirements for recordkeeping, inspection and sampling, storage of hemp, destruction of non-compliant hemp, transportation and pesticide use.
Similar rules are proposed for hemp processors. The proposed rules also include a list of violations and methods of enforcement, in accordance with the Georgia Hemp Farming Act.

The law defines hemp for industrial production as the Cannabis sativa L. plant and any part of the plant, including the 55 seeds and all derivatives, extracts, cannabinoids, isomers, acids, salts and salts of 56 isomers. Whether growing or not, the plants must fall into the federally defined THC concentration of no more than 0.3 percent.
Please submit written comments to Mike Evans, program director, Plant Protection Section of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, 1109 Experiment St., Redding Bldg., Room 213, Griffin, Ga. 30223. Telephone: 404.651.9486. Fax: 770.228.7219. Email: Mike.Evans@ agr.georgia.gov.
Comments will be considered on Aug. 13. Interested persons may call or submit a written request to obtain a copy of the proposed rules. A copy of the synopsis and the proposed rules may be downloaded from the Georgia Department of Agriculture website, www.agr.georgia.gov.

FARMERS AND CONSUMERS MARKET BULLETIN 404-656-3722 agr.georgia.gov

WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 2019

Editor's Note:
Forewarned is forearmed
By Amy Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
I was strolling around my friendly neighborhood lending library the other day when I came across a book titled Verbal Judo: The Gentle Art of Persuasion. I read it in one two-hour sitting.
In hindsight that probably was not enough time to glean the wisdom it was trying to impart, so I'm on my third reading now. I plan more. Scratch that: I need more, as the word "gentle" and myself don't often collide in the same sentence, especially here lately.
The book was written by an English teacher turned lawman. That's the most clever use of an English degree I've ever encountered, and one I wish I'd thought of myself. I would have long ago taken my own English degree to the nearest police station and swapped it for the keys to a fast car.
Instead, here we are, slowly motoring toward the cusp of a new day for the Market Bulletin. We've accomplished one-half of our promised software upgrade, dealing with the subscription management side of our business. It's going well, overall.
We're finalizing the details for the advertising side of the paper and hope to have them in place by July 31. Whether that date holds or not, you will see some significant and, I hope, positive changes in the platform we offer you to buy and sell farm-related goods and services.
One change you might already have noticed is our decision to run all Classified categories in all papers. We've also set a new word limit for all ads, giving you 25, including your name, phone number and city of residence.
On the day we do finally flip the switch that activates the new software, you will notice some changes in the categories available to you for placement of your Classified ads. Until we publish our first issue using the new software, the change will be most obvious to those of you who submit your ads online.
You'll see on this page a full listing of those new Categories, which were written with previous suggestions from readers in mind. We're always open to your recommendations for improving the Market Bulletin, so please don't hesitate to share them with us.
The next time we meet in these pages, I hope to be telling you the deed is done. At that point, we'll talk about more new options available to you as an advertiser in the Market Bulletin.
Until then and as always, we're here if you need us.

My Tractor Story:
Yeah, but do they listen?
By John A. Weaver Blue Ridge
Up until the early 1960s, my dad, James A. "Al" Weaver, had plowed the fields with a mule. He finally saved up and bought a tractor (it was a Ford and I believe it was an 8N Ford, but I am not sure).
Soon after, he was plowing one day and plowed up a yellow jacket nest. The yellow jackets started stinging him and he jumped off the tractor to get away from them. The tractor continued to travel on down the field and my dad ran behind it, yelling "WHOA, WHOA!" (I guess he was used to talking to the mules!)
Do you have a tractor story to tell? We'd love to share it with our readers. Write to Lee Lancaster in care of the Market Bulletin, or email lee.lancaster@agr. georgia.gov.

Pest controllers: Study seeks compromise for consumers

Georgie's Drive Thru Cary
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry agriculture! A couple of months ago, I was invited to Bleckley County's Pre-K Farm Day in the unincorporated community of Cary and we had a blast! One of the best parts of the day was when a crop-duster flew in and gave a demonstration. Jim Wimberly, the pilot, flew his Thrush Turbine 510P across the field at full throttle, just a few feet above the ground. Jim and his dad, Lane, fly out of the Cochran Airport and help farmers and foresters fight bugs, weeds and plant disease all over the Southeast. Their aircraft can carry almost 500 gallons of fungicide, insecticide, herbicide or fertilizer to treat every row crop around, and pine trees, too. It can treat up to 200 acres per hour, using a sprayer powered by a small propeller underneath the nose of the plane. Depending on the season, there's always something to fight, whether it's Southern Corn Rust, stink bug in cotton or Cone Worm in pine trees. And did you know that beautiful, red and white airplane was made right here in Georgia near the Albany Airport? Now you do!

Eubanks used a FLIR infrared thermal

imaging camera and worked in tandem with

Rick Wakenigg, who brought radar equipment

manufactured by the company he represents,

Termatrac. While Eubanks mapped surface

temperature changes indicative of rodent or

insect activity inside the wood timbers and cin-

derblock foundation walls of the crawl space,

Wakenigg electronically tethered his smart

phone to a hand-held motion detector and

showed the pattern of termite activity through

an app that scrolled a spiky blue graph resem-

bling an EKG.

Wakenigg said some exterminators will use

both types of equipment, while some use one

or the other.

"They do complement each other because

After the areas of infestation were marked, foam applicator test their tools in the presence of SPF insulation. The foam it-

self is no deterrent to rodents and insects, Freytag

said. In fact, it helps by trapping moisture and of-

fering warmth in winter.

If the high-tech tools used at UGA prove key

to assessing termite risk when SPF is present,

many pest control operators in Georgia will

have to invest heavily in terms of money and

training time to integrate the new equipment

into their routines.

Bodine Sinyard, owner of Adams Extermi-

nating in Southwest Georgia and a member of

the Georgia Structural Pest Commission, said

the preferred outcome will be an agreement be-

tween exterminators and spray foam applicators

to work together for the good of the consumer.

"There is a way you can apply foam and the

for the consumer," he said. "We're hoping we find a blend that works for everybody."

Cook Georgia Grown:
Georgia Summer Gazpacho
Ingredients: 2 lbs. very ripe fresh
tomatoes 1 cucumber 1 clove garlic Anaheim pepper, or
medium red bell pepper (or any other mild pepper except for green bell pepper. Something with a tiny bit of heat provides balance but isn't necessary.) Vidalia onion 2 tsps. red wine vinegar 1 tsp. salt cup Oliver Farm Infused Sunflower Oil cup extra virgin olive oil
Directions: Halve and core tomatoes and cut into coarse chunks. Peel cucumber and cut into coarse chunks. Peel garlic. Halve, de-seed and de-stem pepper and cut into chunks. Peel onion and cut into chunks. Put everything into a high-speed blender and blend on high at least two minutes until the mixture is very smooth it should be a dark pink color. With the blender still running, add vinegar and salt. In a slow and steady stream, drizzle in the oils and blend until mixture is airy and completely emulsified. It will turn bright orange with the addition of the oils. Chill mixture until completely cool, 3-6 hours. Serving options: more olive oil and a touch of vinegar drizzled on top; chives, dill or basil; halved cherry tomatoes; toasted crusty baguette; croutons. Can be served in tall glasses for sipping, or in soup bowls.

Young farmers at work
When he turned 6, Asa Murray a fourth generation Market Bulletin reader decided to take up farming. His dad, Jonathan Murray, gave him a 20x8 section of the family garden in Marietta. His first harvest includes pumpkins, tomatoes, blackberries, tepary beans, a sunflower and honey he helped harvest from the family's hives, Murray said.
Four-year-old George and twoyear-old Alice McCright also caught the farming bug this year. Their dad, Jonathan McCright, shared this photo of the joyful corn harvest pulled from their backyard garden, Southern Echoes, in Lilburn.
We love to hear from farmers of all ages and experience levels, so show us your harvest. Email your photos and stories to MarketBulletin@agr. georgia.gov.

These are the types of open burning that are legal in Georgia, but that may be prohibited during the Georgia Environmental Protection Division's Open Burn Ban that lasts from May 1 through Sept. 30. Note that the burning of garbage or lumber, even in a burn barrel, is illegal.
Burn Type 1: Reduction of leaves on premises of origin. Burn Type 2: Agricultural procedures for production or harvesting of
crops (if land tract is 5 acres or less). Burn Type 3: Burning vegetative material for agricultural operations
(if land tract is greater than 5 acres). Burn Type 4: Prescribed burning. Burn Type 5: Recreational purposes and cooking. Burn Type 6: Fire-fighting training. Burn Type 7: Acquired structure burns. Burn Type 8: Vegetative debris from storms. Burn Type 9: Weed abatement, disease and pest prevention Burn Type 10: Open-flame devices. Burn Type 11: Land clearing, construction and right-of-way
maintenance
Some Georgia counties and cities have burning restrictions that are more stringent than the open burning ban. You may need a burn permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission before conducting any

burning. EPD recommends that citizens check with their local Fire Marshall and the Georgia Forestry Commission before conducting any burning.

`Chew crew' travels Georgia promoting the latest trend in land-clearing

By Allison Hawk GDA Communications Intern

While it is not true that goats will eat every-

thing in sight, they do love grazing on any vegeta-

tion they can get their hooves on. Because of this,

people have been using them to get rid of unwanted

plants on their property. Over the last several years,

this trend, known as "goatscaping," has become a

popular way to clear land efficiently and in a natu-

ral and environmentally friendly way.

Lu Flaherty has been traveling around Geor-

gia and using her herd of goats to clear brush for

many years. She explained that the general process

is quite simple: set up fencing, bring the goats in,

and let them eat. At the same time, there is a care-

ful balance of plant type and herd size that must be

considered when siting for a goatscaping project.

One of the most important factors to consider

is the type of plants in the area goats love eat-

ing many plants that could be a problem to humans, Members of Lu Flaherty's "chew crew" work for food. (Photo by Allison Hawk/GDA) such as poison ivy. However, there are some plants

that are important to avoid as they are toxic to goats.

"One thing an owner would have to do initially, even be- needed depends on how large the lot to be cleared is and the

fore bringing a goat on the property, is go through their poi- size of the goats themselves. They can move through the brush

sonous weeds and poisonous plants and make certain there are pretty quickly, so making sure the herd is just the right size is

no heavily poisonous plants. The one at the top of the list... imperative.

is the wild cherry," said Flaherty. "When it turns yellow dur- "It comes out to about three to four goats per acre," said

lot of foliage in a space, but looking through it, that's where

Another component is herd size. The number of goats your density and concentration of growth remains."

Other methods may be faster, but using goats has a multitude of benefits. Using machines or chemicals can potentially destroy an ecosystem and if keeping the area as untouched as possible is a concern, goats would be the ideal alternative. The use of goats is a natural process it eliminates emissions released by machinery and prevents contact with harmful chemicals. Not to mention, they are more entertaining to watch and will even fertilize the yard for free.
Gwen Roland of Meansville, a former goat owner and customer of Flaherty, is a strong advocate for goatscaping, and sees how these benefits outweigh the added time.
"It would have required enormous amounts of herbicide to clear the brush in my pasture and woodlot. The expense, the unsightliness, and the damage to the wildlife habitat all made that an unpalatable choice," said Roland.
The most important thing to remember if considering goats to clear land is that they require a lot of work and maintenance. According to Flaherty, people typically only keep them for a couple of years because they do not realize how much work is involved in keeping goats. "You have to love them with unlimited passion," said Flaherty. -Allison Hawk is a rising senior at the University of Geor-
gia from Madison. She is working to earn her degrees in Agri-
business and Agricultural Communications. After graduation,

Whatever happened to Mad Cow Disease?

GDA's Animal Feed Section enforces preventative measures

By Lilli Mansell
GDA Summer Intern
In the late '80s the first confirmed case of an epidemic that would change the way we feed animals forever was discovered in the United Kingdom. Cattle were exhibiting symptoms of violence, aggression, nervousness and incoordination at alarming rates. The disease causing these symptoms would later be defined as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy.
More commonly known as "Mad Cow Disease," this illness had shown dominance in both beef and dairy industries. Fewer than 10 years later, more than 120,000 cattle were diagnosed with BSE in Britain. Throughout this time period the British government insisted that their beef products were safe for human consumption. It wasn't until the first human case was documented nearly 10 years later that scientists realized the disease was zoonotic, or capable of passing from one species to another. "Mad Cow Disease" has seldom been contracted in the U.S. because of effective preventative measures.
BSE is a type of transmissible disease that affects cattle. The source of BSE is believed to be an abnormal prion protein that is resistant to enzymatic breakdown and most disinfection treatments. BSE is a fatal progressive neurologic disease that causes the brain to develop microscopic holes in its tissue like

a sponge, hence "spongiform." There are two types of BSE, classical and atypical. Classi-
cal BSE is caused by the consumption of feed contaminated with the infectious prion protein, commonly found in meatand-bone meal rendered from infected cattle. Atypical BSE is most often associated with older cattle. It ensues spontaneously and has no connection with contaminated feed.
The very first and only known case of classical BSE on U.S. soil was detected in the early 2000s in Washington State. A "downer cow" one that was unable to stand was tested for BSE and diagnosed with its classical form. It was later found that the Holstein cow had been imported from Canada just two years prior. Since then, only five cases have been documented in the United States. All five cases have been in older cattle, and all have been atypical BSE cases which have no known preventative measures. Of these five cases, only two have been in the Southeast -- one in Alabama and one in Florida. A BSE case has never been reported in Georgia.
So how has the U.S. prevented the spread of BSE domestically? The answer to this question is threefold. The first preventative measure was implemented in the late '90s and known as the Feed Ban. The Feed Ban prohibits the feeding of mammalian proteins, most significantly meat-and-bone meal, to ruminants. The Feed Ban is the most substantial regulatory

action because it eliminates the ability of ruminant animals to contract BSE from contaminated meat products.
Secondly, tens of thousands of animals are tested postmortem each year for the presence of abnormal protein prions before entering the food chain.
And lastly, BSE Inspections are performed to ensure that proper measures are being taken to comply with the regulations. This is where the Georgia Department of Agriculture comes in. The department's Animal Feed Program performs frequent inspections through a contract with the FDA.
BSE Inspections consider nearly every step of the animal feed production chain to guarantee that no traces of prohibited material are fed to ruminant animals.
If not for the hard work and rapid response time of the FDA and USDA, the U.S. might have had BSE cases into the hundreds of thousands, comparable to that of the U.K. With strong prevention endeavors through the Feed Ban, BSE testing and BSE Inspections, classical "Mad Cow Disease" will should continue to fade into the shadows.
-Lilli Mansell is a rising senior at the University of Geor-
gia, studying Animal Science with a minor in Agribusiness.
She served a summer internship with the Georgia Department
of Agriculture's Animal Feed Program in the Ag Inputs De-
partment. "I have enjoyed every second of it!" she said.

USDA declares tree-check month in August
Public urged to look for invasive Asian longhorned beetle

WASHINGTON, D.C. August is the height of summer, and it is also the best time to spot the Asian longhorned beetle as it starts to emerge from trees. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is asking the public to take five minutes to step outside and report any signs of this invasive pest. Checking trees for the beetle will help residents protect their own trees and better direct USDA's efforts to eradicate this beetle from the United States.
"It's important to look for signs of the beetle now, because it's slow to spread during the early stages of an infestation," said Josie Ryan, national operations manager of the ALB Eradication Program for USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. "With the public's help we can target new areas where it has spread and provide a better chance of quickly containing it."
The Asian longhorned beetle feeds on a wide variety of popular hardwood trees, including maple, birch, elm, willow, ash and poplar. It has already led to the loss of more

than 180,000 trees. Active infestations are being fought in three areas of the country: Worcester County, Mass.; Long Island, N.Y. (Nassau and Suffolk Counties); and Clermont County, Ohio.
"Homeowners need to know that infested trees do not recover and will eventually die, becoming safety hazards," warned Ryan. "USDA removes infested trees as soon as possible because they can drop branches and even fall, especially during storms, and this keeps the pest from spreading to nearby healthy trees."
The Asian longhorned beetle has distinctive markings that are easy to recognize: Antennae that are longer than the insect's
body with black and white bands. A shiny, jet-black body with white spots,
about 1" to 1 " long. Six legs and feet, possibly bluish-colored.
Signs of infestation include: Round exit holes in tree trunks and branch-
es about the size of a dime or smaller.

Shallow oval or round scars in the bark where the adult beetle chewed an egg site.
Sawdust-like material called frass, laying on the ground around the tree or in the branches.
Dead branches or limbs falling from an otherwise healthy-looking tree. After seeing signs of the beetle:
Make note of what was found and where. Take a photo, if possible.
Try to capture the insect, place in a container, and freeze it. This will preserve it for easier identification.
Report findings by calling 1.866.702.9938 or completing an online form at www. AsianLonghornedBeetle.com. It is possible to eliminate this pest and
USDA has been successfully doing so in several areas. Most recently, the agency declared Stonelick and Batavia Townships in Ohio to be free of the Asian longhorned beetle. The beetle was also eliminated from Illinois, New Jersey, Boston, Mass. and parts of New York.

The Asian Longhorned Beetle (Anoplophora
glabripennis, or ALB) is a threat to America's
hardwood trees. With no current cure, early
identification and eradication are critical to its
control. The ALB has the potential to cause more
damage than Dutch elm disease, chestnut blight
and gypsy moths combined, destroying millions of
acres of America's treasured hardwoods, including
national forests and backyard trees. (USDA APHIS
photo)
The New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens are in the final stages of eradication.
For more information about the Asian longhorned beetle, other ways to keep it from spreading such as not moving firewood and eradication program activities, visit www. AsianLonghornedBeetle.com. For local inquiries or to speak to your State Plant Health Director, or call 1.866.702.9938.
