UGA cotton team studying potentially damaging disease
By Clint Thompson
Scientists from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences are investigating the epidemiology of cotton leaf roll dwarf virus in Georgia using a $75,000
10 0 t1h9A17nniv2e0r1s7ary
grant jointly funded by the Georgia
Cotton Commission and Cotton Incor-
porated.
CLRDV is known to cause cotton
blue disease, which can reduce yields
up to 80 percent in cotton fields infected
in early growth stages. Symptoms in-
clude leaf curling and reddening and
drooping leaves.
"This research will help us gener-
ate knowledge about the virus and its
spread, symptomatology, host range,
vectors dynamics and the associated
yield loss," said Sudeep Bag, an assis-
tant professor on the UGA Tifton cam-
pus who specializes in crop virology.
"This will further assist us in develop-
ing management practices to mitigate
the disease."

the UGA Cotton team breeder Peng A cotton plant shows symptoms of cotton blue disease. (UGA Photo)
Chee, agronomist Mark Freeman, plant pathologist Bob Kemerait, entomologist Phillip Roberts and agronomist Jared Whitaker are collaborating with UGA Cooperative Extension agents across Georgia to gauge the severity of the spread of the disease in the state.
In fall 2018, the virus was detected in cotton fields in 14 Georgia counties, including Baker, Ben Hill, Bulloch, Crisp, Colquitt, Dodge, Dooly, Early, Pulaski, Seminole, Sumner, Terrell, Tift and Webster.
"We are in the very early stages of understanding the disease in the U.S. In the last six to eight months, we have made significant headway in understanding the genomic composition of different isolates from Georgia," Bag said.
In spring 2019, Bag and his UGA colleagues detected the virus in cotton stalks and regrowth. It was also found in weeds such as henbit and perennial peanut. These could potentially act as a reservoir for the virus and the aphid

Mercer Medical Moment:
You can prevent skin cancer
By Edward C. Klatt, MD
The one kind of cancer easily prevented is skin cancer. The skin cancers caused by chemicals can be prevented by knowing what chemicals you are working with, like pesticides or preservatives, reading and following directions for proper use, and wearing protective equipment.
Most skin cancers are the result of exposure to sunlight over many years. It is the ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight that cause skin damage and lead to cancer. We don't want to use refrigerants with chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) damaging to our atmosphere to let in more ultraviolet light from the sun. That helps reduce our exposure to ultraviolet radiation outdoors. Commercial tanning beds use ultraviolet light with the same damaging effects on skin as sunlight outdoors. The sunlight damage on exposed skin accumulates over time. Damage occurs to both the outer layer of skin, called the epidermis, and to the underlying tissue called the dermis. When the dermis is damaged it cannot support the epidermis as well, and the result is skin wrinkles. When the epidermis is damaged it becomes thickened, rough, scaly, and red. The worse the damage, the greater the risk for skin cancer. People with naturally darker skin have more protection but can still get sunburned and can still get skin cancers, like on the lighter areas of their skin. But anyone getting badly sunburned, especially to the point of blistering of the skin, increases even more their risk for skin cancer. Light skinned persons with no sun protection can get a sunburn with skin damage in only 15 minutes. What can you do to prevent skin cancer?
Avoid exposure when the sun is highest in the sky in the middle of the day, from 10 am to 4 pm on Daylight Saving Time.
Wear clothing made of a tightly woven fabric with high ultraviolet protection factor (UPF), kept dry. A thin white cotton T-shirt is UPF 5, while a thicker dark synthetic fiber shirt is UPF 50.
Use a sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more, and reapply in a couple of hours, and after swimming or sweating a lot.
Wear a hat with a wide brim shading both your face and neck. Wear sunglasses. Ultraviolet light damages eyes, too.
Look at your own skin regularly and check each month for any changes. If you notice a patch of skin or mole or nodule that is getting bigger, is changing shape, is changing color or becomes sore and doesn't heal, then it is time to have a doctor look at it. Even if it is a cancer, when you find it sooner, not later, it is easier to treat and more likely to be curable.
The worst kind of skin cancer is called melanoma. Most melanomas have a real dark color, and they grow quickly, but they can come in many colors, shapes and sizes. If you have them removed when they are small, then the chance of a cure is high. Let them grow, wait too long, and they can quickly spread to organs in your body, and treating them is difficult and often involves chemotherapy.
The two most common skin cancers are called squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. They grow slowly, but don't go away. They can grow in places you don't want, like your eyelid, and even when small can be difficult to remove. Removing larger skin cancers may need a plastic surgeon to put things back together again.
In summary, there are simple, easy things you can do to prevent skin cancer. You can check your skin on a regular basis to find problems early and have them treated before they become worse.

VALDOSTA USDA's Risk Management Agency reminds Georgia fresh market sweet corn and pepper growers that the final date to apply for crop insurance coverage is July 31. Current policyholders who wish to make changes to their existing coverage also have until the July 31 sales closing date to do so.
Federal crop insurance is critical to the farm safety net. It helps producers and owners manage revenue risks and strengthens the rural economy. Coverage is available for fresh market sweet corn in Colquitt, Decatur, Grady, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Tift, Toombs and Worth counties. Coverage is also available for peppers in Brooks, Colquitt, Cook, Echols, Grady, Lowndes, Thomas, Tift, Ware and Worth counties.
Growers are encouraged to visit their crop insurance agent soon to learn specific details for the 2020 crop year. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at www.rma.usda.gov/informationtools/agentlocator. Growers can use the RMA Cost Estimator at ewebapp.rma.usda.gov/apps/costestimator/ to get a premium amount estimate of their insurance needs online.

Critter Fixers: Docs hope to inspire others

Pet Hospital in Macon. The 40-year-old Tazewell native said Ferguson and Hodges were instrumental in
keeping her on track and motivating her throughout the process. Porter is proud to see two of her mentors getting their own show on Nat Geo Wild.
"They couldn't have picked two better people to represent this side of the world," she said.
Ferguson and Hodges hope the show will encourage others like Porter to go after whatever profession they desire no matter where they come from and expose more African-American youth to careers in veterinary science.
"African-American veterinarians make up 1.6 percent of the veterinary profession," Hodges noted.
In addition, they hope viewers of the show will see the uniqueness and lively spirit that they bring to work every day.
The Critter Fixer Veterinary Hospital sees more than 20,000 patients annually, which includes dogs, cats, hamsters, donkeys, birds and snakes. The most unusual pets they have seen include a camel and a few pet skunks.
"We want our clients and patients to leave knowing they received the best possible care," Hodges said. "That is how we have achieved success over the last 20 years. It starts with them. We wouldn't be anything without them."
Ferguson and Hodges opened the first Critter Fixer in Byron in May 1999 and then opened the second facility in Bonaire three months later. Without the benefits of social media at the time, they relied on door-to-door marketing with flyers.
Amused, Hodges said the first business name Ferguson considered was the Veterinary Associates of Byron. Describing himself as the kooky one of the pair, the "Bet on Yourself: From Zero to Millions" author proposed a name that evokes originality and Southern flair.
"We made Critter Fixer a household name locally and hopefully now nationally," Hodges said.
The "Critter Fixers" show will air in the fall on Nat Geo Wild. The network has not released the exact date. Production filmed six episodes.
Cook Georgia Grown: Famous Strawberry Pie
Editor's Note: We think we have a winner in our exhaustive search for the definitive recipe for Strawberry Icebox Pie as served by the long gone but not forgotten Char House restaurant in Sandy Springs. This recipe was shared with us by Mark Johnson, an attorney in Marietta. "I think this recipe has better `provenance' than the two recipes which were printed (in the July 3 issue)," Johnson wrote to us. "Plus, it was very much a custard pie. The two printed ones aren't. I grew up in Sandy Springs and savored the pie often." A note at the top of the submitted recipe, attributed to Sarah Powell Johnson, says: "Kitty (Braswell, Char House owner) never confirmed nor denied that this was the recipe, but hints this was it or mighty close. They kept it a secret thinking their son or granddaughter might
one day want to do something with it." You be the judges, Market Bulletin readers, and let us know your thoughts.

Georgie's Drive Thru Finleyson
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry, agriculture! I was driving thru Finleyson (pronounced Fin-L-Son) the other day when I spotted a strange object in the middle of a cotton field. It was a little pink building with a white, round roof and something that looked like a chimney with a bunch of lights sticking out of the top. As I approached the object, I wondered what it could be: A clubhouse for boll weevils? An antenna for aliens to communicate? A new style of Dairy Queen? I had to find out, so I called a source of the highest intelligence I know: my old forestry teacher at the Warnell School in Athens. He told me what I was looking at was a VOR! VOR stands for Very High Frequency (VHF) OmniDirectional Range, a system of radio beacons that aircraft use to navigate. There's another one of those funny looking buildings on the south side of the Downing Musgrove Causeway to Jekyll Island. VORs are quickly being outdated by another three-letter navigation system: GPS.
My Tractor Story: Four generations and a Super C Farmall
By Clay L. McDaniel Bethlehem
I grew up on a small farm in Barrow County. My dad and I farmed with mules until 1951. In 1951 my father, W.W. McDaniel, bought a new Super C Farmall tractor with harrows, 2 row planters and cultivators.
About the year 2000, there was a fire in a barn causing extensive damage to the tractor. My nephew, Lee McElhannon, restored the tractor to good condition. A few weeks ago, Lee asked me if I wanted the tractor to bring it back to the farm (home).
So, I did.
The pictures show me, my two sons Steve and Jimmy, two of my grandsons, Jamison and Michael, and two of my great-grandsons, Liam and Calvin. So, each picture shows four generations. I thought this was pretty neat.
Do you have a tractor story to tell? We'd love to share it with our readers. Write to Lee Lancaster in care of the Market Bulletin, or email lee.lancaster@agr. georgia.gov.

Cotton Study

vector. The detection of the virus from these hosts raises further questions about the current cultural practices of conservation tillage for growing cotton, as these plants can potentially maintain the virus throughout the winter.
"It is extremely important to be highly proactive in studying the disease since there is a lack of basic understanding of the virus and the disease. The team is working on different objectives to generate as much information as possible about the disease," said Bag.
CLRDV is a single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus that affects the phloem cells of the plants and is transmitted by cotton aphids. The virus is taken up by aphids during feeding and then deposited into other plants the next time the aphid feeds. The aphid can carry the disease for its whole life, allowing it to infect multiple plants.
CLRDV is considered one of the most damaging viruses in cultivated cotton and is the first RNA virus on cotton reported to cause crop loss in the U.S.
"With no resistant cultivars currently available against the virus on cultivated cotton, and the lack of knowledge on the transmission and epidemiology of the disease, the virus is a serious threat to the cotton industry in the USA," Bag said.
According to Bag, the main objectives of UGA research include: Identifying alternate and overwintering hosts of the virus
and the aphid vectors. Understand the disease development and symptomatol-
ogy on cotton. Understand the role of aphids as vectors on disease spread. Develop economical and precise detection tools.
The Georgia Cotton Commission contributed $25,000 and Cotton Incorporated provided the remaining $50,000 for the grant, which also will support a current research scholar and summer students.

Sunbelt Ag Expo is hosting its annual Field Day July 25 at Spence Field in Moultrie. Farmers are invited to get practical information from the region's top agricultural scientists about the newest technologies to improve farm operations.
The half-day event takes place at the 600-acre Darrell Williams Research Farm, located at the Expo show site. Registration is free for anyone who works in agriculture and starts at 7:45 a.m. with breakfast.
Shuttles will be loaded at 8:30 a.m. to tour the farm; ap-
proximately 30 stops are scheduled, with specific time allotted for each stop and crop.
Tour shuttles will return to the RW Griffin building by noon for a barbecue lunch.
UGA researchers, Extension Specialists, and ag chemical representatives conduct numerous trials at the Sunbelt farm for all major Southern agronomic crops. To view more specific Field Day details, download the Sunbelt Ag Expo app or visit www.sunbeltexpo.com.
Field day gives growers the opportunity to see crops like corn, cotton, soybeans and peanuts growing in the field under various conditions on the research farm at Sunbelt. (GDA File Photos)

These are the types of open burning that are legal in Georgia, but that may be prohibited during the Georgia Environmental Protection Division's Open Burn Ban that lasts from May 1 through Sept. 30. Note that the burning of garbage or lumber, even in a burn barrel, is illegal.
Burn Type 1: Reduction of leaves on premises of origin. Burn Type 2: Agricultural procedures for production or harvesting of
crops (if land tract is 5 acres or less). Burn Type 3: Burning vegetative material for agricultural operations
(if land tract is greater than 5 acres). Burn Type 4: Prescribed burning. Burn Type 5: Recreational purposes and cooking. Burn Type 6: Fire-fighting training. Burn Type 7: Acquired structure burns. Burn Type 8: Vegetative debris from storms. Burn Type 9: Weed abatement, disease and pest prevention Burn Type 10: Open-flame devices. Burn Type 11: Land clearing, construction and right-of-way
maintenance
Some Georgia counties and cities have burning restrictions that are more stringent than the open burning ban. You may need a burn permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission before conducting any
burning. EPD recommends that citizens check with their local Fire Marshall and the Georgia Forestry Commission before conducting any burning.
Access more information on the open burning ban by visiting http:// epd.georgia.gov/ and clicking on "Open Burning Ban" under Quick Links, or by calling the EPD District Office in your area. Farmers test a new crop with summer saffron planting Flower is used to make spice, potpourri and dyes
By Jay Jones jay.jones@agr.georgia.gov
Hays Fyke with his wife, Andrea, and their children, Imrie and Buck.
Practitioner Profiles: Dr. Hays Fyke
This is the first in an occasional series of profiles of large animal veterinarians who have given a year of service to rural communities in exchange for financial assistance from the Georgia Veterinary Education Loan Repayment Program.
The State Veterinary Education Board of Georgia administers the GVELRP and works alongside the Georgia Student Finance Authority to make payments on the student loans of the program's participants after their year-long service period is completed.
Dr. Madison "Hays" Fyke graduated from the inaugural class of participants in 2018.
Hays Fyke, DVM
Associate Veterinarian Plantation Centre Animal Hospital, Macon
Hometown: Macon Education: Macon State, Georgia Tech and St. George's University (Grenada)
Question: What attracted you to become a large animal
veterinarian?
Answer: I enjoy working in a rural setting. I just have an appreciation of the outdoors, and I enjoy working with cattle.
Q: What excites you most about the future of large
animal veterinary science?
A: I think there is a large merging taking place with technology and food animal medicine. Right now, I am pursuing a post-doctoral degree in obstetrics and gynecology of domestic animals, and I definitely see on the horizon a change in our profession, specifically in how it relates to agriculture. I am excited to see reproductive sciences become more efficient and more affordably offered to farmers.
Q: What advice would you offer to someone considering
a career as a large animal veterinarian?
A: From a student loan perspective, my first advice would be to find a place in central Georgia or somewhere that is in need for veterinarians in the hope that you can partner with (the) government to assist in the repayment of your loan. That is going to be a burden unto itself. I think that someone who wants to dedicate themselves to a large animal or food animal practice will need to focus on that rather than what most of us did, which is mixed-animal care. The more exposure you have with livestock, the more comfort you have around livestock, the better practitioner you'll be in the long run.
-Applications for the Georgia Veterinary Education Loan
Repayment Program are accepted annually. For more infor-
mation about the program, go to agr.georgia.gov/georgia-vet-
erinary-education-loan-repayment-program.aspx.
BUCHANAN Could Georgia become "The Saffron
State?" A couple in Haralson County looks to give it their
best shot in their garden.
Dave and Katie Bridges of Chewy's Backyard Farm pur-
chased 100 saffron corms (bulbs) and will plant five each
in 20 milk crates this summer. If all goes well, they will be
harvesting the spice by mid-October.
The Bridges are micro-farmers and have turned their
backyard into a small agricultural operation that has grown
close to 100 varieties of produce in the three years since they
started their garden. Katie Bridges said they did well selling
their produce at local farmers markets and are always on the
lookout for something new and different to plant.
The idea to grow saffron came to Katie Bridges from a
magazine article about the spice. The University of Vermont
is home to a saffron research center that promotes saffron
production in the northeastern United States. She wondered
if the spice could grow in Georgia.
She learned people grow saffron in California, Virginia
and Pennsylvania. But Georgia? The answer was, "I don't
know."
Katie Bridges kept researching and contacted Hans Rot-
teveel of Roco Saffron, one of the largest saffron corm dis-
tributors in the world.
"I asked him if they had ever shipped it to Georgia, and if
they knew if it would grow in Georgia," she said. "He asked
me what (USDA hardiness) zone we were in, and I told him.
He said he didn't see why not."
Dave Bridges was unsure. He had always wanted to
farm, and when their two sons moved out of the house, they
decided to start a garden and see if they could make it profit-
able.
"I'm conservative. I don't like trying crazy stuff just
to try. I want real return," he said. "I'm kind of concerned
about it because my question is, `Why is no one in Georgia
doing it?'"
