Officials with the Georgia Department of Agriculture joined members of the Georgia National Fair Board and state lawmakers in Perry April 11 to break ground for construction of the Georgia Grown Baby Barn. The live birthing center is expected to open in October.
Georgia Grown Baby Barn coming to 2018 Georgia National Fair
GDA, Fair Board, Lawmakers break ground on live birthing center attraction
By Kendall McWilliams kendall.mcwilliams@agr.georgia.gov
PERRY -- The Georgia Department of Agriculture in partnership with the Georgia National Fair Board, the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and Georgia's animal industry professionals broke ground on a live birthing center at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry April 11.
Parrish Construction of Perry and Roswell is building the Georgia Grown Baby Barn as an annex to the existing Georgia Grown Building at the fairgrounds. The center is expected to open its doors to fairgoers during the 2018 Georgia National Fair Oct. 4-14. The center will promote familiarity with Georgia's animal industry by showcasing live births of animals, an event that some fairgoers might never witness otherwise.
According to Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black, this venture would not be possible without the support of the Georgia General Assembly. As with most major state-funded projects such as buildings on college campuses and other multi-use event spaces construction of the Baby Barn project will be paid for with state bonds. The
state of Georgia floated a $2.4 million bond issue to bring this project to fruition.
"The purpose of the fairgrounds and agricenter is to be a place for the next generation to come and experience agriculture in a way that quite frankly they might not have had the opportunity to before," Black said. "The Georgia Grown Baby Barn will enhance this mission."
Similar attractions at other state fairgrounds captured the interest of fair board members and leaders of the Georgia Grown program. After seeing the crowd's overwhelmingly positive reaction to a live birthing center at the Minnesota State Fair last fall, the fair board voted to bring a similar attraction to Perry.
"The people in Minnesota were enthralled," said Jack Spruill, director of marketing for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. "There were families who stood there attentively for up to four hours to see a cow have a calf."
According to Spruill, the two species set to make their debut at the birthing center this fall will be cattle and swine, with the possibility of including goats and sheep in the future. The goal is to see 11 dairy

Experts predict upcoming hurricane season will be a busy one UGA Climatologist says a dry spring will delay planting
By Julie Jernigan
Georgia farmers should expect dry weather when they
plant their crops this spring, but Pam Knox, University
of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental
Sciences agricultural climatologist, anticipates an active
tropical storm season in the Atlantic Ocean this summer.
Farmers watch the weather closely because it deter-
mines when to schedule operations like spraying, cattle
grazing and irrigation.
"Coming out of the moderate La Nina event that we
had this winter, neutral conditions are expected by late
spring," Knox said. "When this happens, there seem to
be drier conditions that are not good for planting."
Precipitation in Georgia was low in January and Feb-
ruary, which caused an increase in drought conditions.
But cooler weather and increased rainfall in March al-
leviated some of those dry conditions, Knox said.
Because it is an El Nino-Southern Oscillation
(ENSO)-neutral year, the interaction between the atmo-
sphere and the ocean produces a slight periodic variation
between below-normal and above-normal sea surface

Editor's Note:
Only a fool argues with a skunk, a mule or the cook
By Amy Carter
One of my most prized possessions is a wellloved little recipe collection given to me by my Mama. It's the first "cookbook" I ever knew, and it looks about as old as I feel.
It's nothing like the slick best-sellers of today; just a stack of typewritten and mimeographed recipe cards with two holes punched in the top for the kitchen twine that still binds it all together. Time has turned the pages brown, but it still bears a cheery spring-green cover with the hand-lettered title, "Treasure Chest of Recipes." It is the "Second Compilation" assembled by the fine ladies of the Jekyll Presbyterian Community Church. In case you didn't know, Jekyll Island is one of Georgia's socalled Golden Isles, and the treasure chest has always figured prominently in our branding. Visit once and you'll understand why. Even if memory didn't serve, I could tell you by looking at that little book of 3x5 recipe cards that it was always out on my Mama's kitchen counter, right beside the wall-mounted, apple-green, touch-tone phone with the extra-long cord that facilitated many miles of long distance wandering while talking. Mama scribbled my Aunt Lynn's old phone number inside the cover, and nearly obliterated Carolyn F. Moore's recipe for Squash Casserole with doodles no doubt drawn while talking with same. They just don't make cookbooks like this anymore. The title page offers a prayer of "Grace;" the second page, "A Recipe for Living." The third is a list of "Homely Helps," and the fourth goes like this:
"Preserved Children"
9 miles of Jekyll's sandy beach
doz. assorted children (more if can handle!)
2 small dogs
Several kites
Mix well empty into Ocean, stirring occasionally.
Sprinkle with shells, cover with blue sky. Bake in sun
until children are thoroughly brown (careful of burn-
ing!). Ready for dinner 'most any time.
Ah, home! To be quite honest with you, I never flipped past my two favorite recipes in the book, the ones my Mama always cooks for me whenever I need one of her inside-out hugs. The main course is Beef Stroganoff, contributed by Isabelle Winslett (Mrs. L.S.). It's followed by a dessert of Busy-Day Peach Cobbler, shared by Catherine McConnell (Mrs. H.V.). Truth be told, I've always been more of a blueberry girl than a peach. They're easily interchanged. The cobbler is the basis of an ongoing joke between Mama and me and now my 11-year-old son. Whenever anyone tells us they've had a busy day, we holler: "You should have made a cobbler!" Get it? No? Well, we crack ourselves up. All this is to say, we've committed a huge sin of omission lately where recipes are concerned. More than one of you have outright told me that your continued support of the Market Bulletin could very well depend upon our willingness to publish recipes, and I've taken that to heart. If you don't mind helping us out a bit, I'll make you a promise to run at least one recipe per issue, if you'll promise to send us a favorite or two from your files that we can share when our regular sources run dry. You might start with cornbread recipes. I've heard from several readers about an unforgettable cornbread recipe found once in the pages of the Market Bulletin. So far, I've been unable to locate it in our archives. If you've got a good one to share, send it along, won't you?
Mercer Medical Moment: Farmer's Lung
By John Wesley King, M.D.
Occupational lung disease is the primary cause of work-related illness in the United States. Farming is currently ranked as one of the top three most hazardous occupations, along with construction and mining.
Farmer's lung is a type of hypersensitivity pneumonitis due to organic dust or mold spores called thermophilic (heat-loving) actinomyces found in moldy hay, straw or grains. When crops are stored without sufficient drying, they begin to heat and many kinds of mold can grow. When a farmer breaks open a bale of hay, the mold is released as a fine dust. In a susceptible farmer, an allergic reaction to the inhaled dust causes the immune system to work against the mold, producing symptoms that resemble flu or pneumonia.
Acute farmer's lung occurs when a farmer is especially sensitive, or there is a very heavy exposure to moldy hay. Little permanent lung damage occurs in early stages, but with each subsequent exposure, the damage and permanent scarring worsens, with progressive cough and shortness of breath.
Symptoms of acute farmer's lung include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath and a flu-like illness. With continued exposure, chronic disease develops, with progressive shortness of breath, cough and sweats. The disease can progress to permanent disability.
Diagnosis of acute farmer's lung is difficult and often confused with flu or pneumonia, since most acute episodes occur in late winter and early spring i.e., "flu season"
when farmers use stored food and hay to feed their livestock. It is important to inform your doctor that you are a farmer, and to also share if you have been exposed to moldy crop material and other dust or chemicals.
The risk of developing farmer's lung is small. Studies suggest that fewer than 10 percent of farmers are at risk. Dairy farmers are the most common victims. Evaluation for the disease includes a detailed history and physical, with attention to workplace history. Investigation includes chest X-rays, CAT scans of the chest, breathing studies and blood tests to detect mold exposure.
Treatment includes avoidance of further exposure, rest, oxygen, inhalers and, in severe cases, corticosteroids.
Once established, there is no cure for farmer's lung, so prevention is critical. Take these precautions to minimize the risk of farmer's lung:
Make sure crops are adequately dried. Use wetting techniques when cleaning dusty areas
or grain bins. Provide ventilation when working in dusty areas. Move work outdoors whenever possible. Wear an approved toxic dust respirator mask that is
properly fitted. (A respirator mask should never be used as an excuse to skip other preventive measures.) Finally, cigarette smoking can increase the disability from farmer's lung, so smoking avoidance or cessation is critical.

Georgia Cotton Commission approves funding for 2019 research
By Taylor Sills
PERRY On April 11, the Georgia Cotton Commission's Board of Directors approved $697,802 in research for the 2019 crop year, an increase from the $665,196 approved for 2018. This money will fund 21 research projects that will be conducted by researchers from the University of Georgia and the University of West Georgia.
These projects range from funding for the UGA Cotton Team to precision ag research and the marking and treatment of root-knot nematode-resistant genes in cotton. The goal of this producer-funded research is to help cotton producers by raising yields, promoting efficiency or opening new markets.
All projects are vetted by the board of directors made up of cotton producers from across the state and the commission's research review committee, which consists of researchers, crop consultants and UGA Ag Extension agents.
"Our board is committed to making strategic investments in research that will benefit our growers and, through them, the cotton industry here in Georgia," said Bart Davis, a Colquitt County cotton producer and chairman of the commission's board of directors. "Georgia's farmers are producing the most efficient, highest quality crop that we have ever made and it is thanks to the research done by our scientists."
The Georgia Cotton Commission is a producer-funded organization formed in 1965. Georgia cotton producers pay an assessment that enables the commission to invest in programs of research, promotion and education on behalf of all cotton producers in the state.
For more information about the Georgia Cotton Commission, call 478.988.4235 or visit www.georgiacottoncommission.org.

Hurricane Season: More named storms expected
Continued From Page 1
temperatures. This means that during hurricane season June 1 to Nov. 30 there will likely be more named storms.
On April 16, researchers at North Carolina State University predicted that 14 to 18 tropical storms and hurricanes will form in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea during the upcoming storm season. Of those, seven to 11 may grow strong enough to become hurricanes, and three to five could become major hurricanes, researchers said.
Researchers at Colorado State University say the anticipated number of storms is higher in 2018 than the 30-year average of six hurricanes two of them major and 12 named storms. CSU gives the continental U.S. a 63 percent chance of experiencing landfall from at least one major hurricane.
Since 1950, the average for named storms in a year has
been 11. In 2017, there were 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes and six major hurricanes including Harvey, Irma and Maria. Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irma caused extensive damage to crops across Southwest Georgia.
To deliver updated news to growers, Knox uses observations and satellites to track weather predictions.
"I look at all of these models to simulate what we might expect, but weather is always changing," Knox said. "You always have to be prepared."
Knox writes a daily blog, where she details weather outlooks for the week and other crop news. For more information, visit the Climate and Agriculture in the Southeast blog at site.extension.uga.edu/climate/author/pknox/.

DNR is accepting applications for Georgia Centennial Farm Program
Georgie's Drive Thru Strawberry Country
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry agriculture! Do you like strawberries? I know my pups do! When I put a bowl of fresh strawberries on the table for Morty, Ginny and Skip, I have to count my fingers and make sure I don't draw back a hand full of nubs. And do you know where the best strawberries come from? Georgia, of course! There are dozens of upick strawberry farms and roadside markets all over the state. Ginny's kindergarten class went to Calhoun Produce in Ashburn for a farm tour the other day and picked fresh strawberries, saw bees making honey and even got to see a bison! The folks up in Reynolds love strawberries, too. They celebrate with the Georgia Strawberry Festival on April 28. They have a beauty pageant, soapbox derby, weenie dog race (my Uncle Melvin is the early favorite to win) and they even asked me to be the Grand Marshal of the Strawberry Parade!

The Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications from owners of farms that have been continuously operating for 100 years or more to be recognized by the Georgia Centennial Farm Program.
Applications for the 2018 awards program must be postmarked by May 1. Download an application at Georgiashpo.org/centennialfarms, or contact Sarah Love at 770.389.7856 or sarah.love@dnr.ga.gov.
Qualifying farms must consist of a minimum of 10 acres actively involved in agricultural production, generating at least $1,000 per year in farm income. The farm must also retain at least 10 acres of the original farm purchase. Qualified farms are recognized in one of three categories:
The Centennial Heritage Farm Award honors farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more that are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Centennial Family Farm Award recognizes
farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more that are not listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Centennial Farm Award does not require continual family ownership, but farms must be at least 100 years old and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Each year, qualifying farms are recognized during a ceremony held on the first Friday of the Georgia National Fair in Perry. During the awards presentation, farm owners receive a Georgia Centennial Farm Certificate of Honor signed by the Governor. More than 500 farms have been recognized by the Georgia Centennial Farm Program since its inception in 1993. The program is administered by the Historic Preservation Division of DNR in partnership with the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, the Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia Forestry Commission and the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. The program is sponsored by Georgia EMC.

Georgia Grown Craft Food Makers Symposium unites food business entrepreneurs for education, ideas to grow their businesses
By Amy Carter amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
The first in a series of networking events
for Georgia Grown members was held March
23 at Emory Point in Atlanta. The Georgia
Grown Craft Food Makers Symposium was
part of a two-day business-development series
for food product entrepreneurs. It concluded
with a craft food makers' market targeted to
consumers in the upscale neighborhoods sur-
rounding the campuses of Emory University
and the Centers for Disease Control.
The gathering drew about 70 food business
owners and farmers.
"I know we see
a lot of each other
at farmers markets
and different trade
shows," said Geor-
gia Grown Deputy
Director Matt Ku-
linski. "This is a
great opportunity
to see each other
outside of that so
that we can talk to-
gether and we can learn from each other and meet people from other parts of the industry that we aren't
Keith Schroeder, cofounder of High Road Craft Ice Cream in Marietta, delivered the keynote address at the symposium.
familiar with."
Kulinski said the Emory Point gathering
was the first step in formulating a strategic
plan "to make Georgia the epicenter for food
entrepreneurs."
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary
W. Black said the department of agriculture set
that process in motion several years ago with
the introduction of its Cottage Food License,
which makes it possible for start-ups to work

from their home-based kitchens foregoing the considerable expense of constructing or leasing a commercial-grade facility to sell foods that do not require refrigeration directly to the public.
The license allows bakers and makers of seasonings and spices and the like to monetize a hobby and build a business for relatively little expense. There are more than 800 cottage license holders operating in Georgia currently.
"Some just want to stay small," Black said. "Some started small and have gotten bigger."
That's one of the ways the government has fulfilled its role of creating a business-friendly environment for entrepreneurs, said Keith Schroeder, founder and chief executive of High Road Craft Ice Cream in Marietta, who delivered the keynote address at the symposium. The symposium is another way the state can help.
"It's the business of the state to help keep your heads above water in your businesses, but it's really up to us as cohorts, as an organiza-
tion, to encourage growth, to encourage prof-
itability in our organizations," he said. "It's
elusive when you're a craftsperson and you're
making jam all day or you have a smokehouse
and you have to tend to the pork bellies. It's
very hard to develop the acumen of an Emory
University Chief Financial Officer."
Schroeder said that by pooling their re-
sources, sharing the secrets of their successes
and failures, and encouraging one another,
craft food makers can push the industry for-
ward in Georgia. They can also effect change
in the corporate forces that tend to favor big
business at the expense of mom-and-pop op-
erators.
As an example, he cited the thousands of
dollars in "slotting fees" the grocery industry
charges to simply place a product on the shelf.
"There are access issues for small busi-
nesses in states
like ours, in fact
in states across the
country, and I think
together we can put
pressure on the in-
dustry to minimize
or eliminate said
slotting fees for
cottage industry in
particular," Schro-
eder said.
Schroeder and
his wife, Nicki,

in 2010. They

gourmet ice creams. The flavors are both exotic Aztec Chocolate, with a hint of spice and local Caramel Pecan, a selection in their Georgia Grown collection.
Now available through grocery retailers in 30 states, the company is on track to record $20 million in sales. Along the way, Schroeder has graduated from chef to CEO, and hired former Whole Foods Vice President Stephen Corradini to serve as chief operating officer.
Schroeder unveiled for his audience the idea of forming "the American Food Makers' Consortium," a collaborative organization de-

signed to elevate craft food makers in Georgia first, and later nationwide.
"The government does what it can to bring us together, so now it's up to us to build a consortium," he said. "There's an opportunity for us to do some good for Georgia food makers with a business acumen-focused association. Business education for makers is something that's missing."
The dates of future such networking events for Georgia Grown members will be announced soon. Follow Georgia Grown on Facebook and online at GeorgiaGrown.com, and watch the events calendar in the Market Bulletin for more information.
UGA Extension Study shows impact of herbicides on pecan trees
By Clint Thompson
Dicamba and 2,4-D herbicides, sprayed directly on trees at full rates, kill the plant material they touch, but they don't travel through the tree or linger from year to year, according to a study by the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service. The study also found that drift from the herbicides does not hurt the trees.
UGA Extension pecan specialist Lenny Wells and UGA Extension weed scientist Eric Prostko researched the effects of low and high concentrations of dicamba and 2,4-D herbicides on pecan trees at the university's Ponder Farm in Tifton. They studied 5-, 8- and 9-year-old "Desirable" pecan trees. No data was collected on older trees.
The application of high concentrations of herbicides injured the specific parts of the trees where the herbicides were applied. The team was surprised that the herbicides did not move to other parts of the tree.
"At higher concentrations, whatever tissue the herbicide touched, it killed. But we also expected to see translocation of those materials in the tree, meaning if you spray it on one part of the tree, the material would move to another part of the tree. But we did not see that," Wells said. "There could still be problems, but we feel a little bit better about it than we did initially."
The team also studied the effects of low-concentration applications and whether any of the dicamba or 2,4-D herbicides drifted onto neighboring pecan trees.
Applying lower concentrations of herbicides, particularly

given minimal drift, resulted in "very little damage," which also surprised Wells and Prostko.
"I went into this research project thinking, `If I spray dicamba directly onto a pecan tree, I'm going to kill it.' That didn't happen," Prostko said.
During the simulated drift situations, Wells and Prostko sprayed the herbicides directly onto the pecan trees for approximately 10 seconds. They also sprayed into the wind so the herbicides would drift onto the trees.
"In Georgia, there's a good chance you will have peanuts or cotton next to a pecan orchard, so the chances of off-target movement could be great, depending on what else is going
on with the wind and the nozzles and everything else we talk about with off-target movement," Prostko said. "This research alleviated some of the fears we had about dicamba's or 2,4-D's impact on pecan trees."
While the research encouraged Wells and Prostko, they still warn Georgia farmers to be wary of their surroundings when applying these herbicides.
UGA Extension and the Georgia Department of Agriculture have made a concentrated effort to educate Georgia growers about the dangers of herbicide drift since 2014. One goal is to make sure that producers are aware of the impact certain herbicides may have on neighboring fields, gardens and other plants.
Wells and Prostko collaborated on this project because there was no research data available for UGA Extension agents to distribute to pecan farmers. They wanted to determine how sensitive pecan trees were to these specific herbicides.
The scientists have watched the trees since 2013 and have not observed any long-term effects.
"Probably one of the biggest concerns that pecan producers have relates to the effects of dicamba the year after they get it in their trees," Prostko said. "We're doing this work to make sure there are no long-term effects."
