We are thankful for Georgia farmers
By Gary W. Black, Commissioner
Georgia Department of Agriculture
One of the greatest privileges I've had as Georgia Agriculture Commissioner is the opportunity to visit with folks across this great state and country. During my travels, I enjoy revealing the seldom-told story behind our state's name. Most know that the State of Georgia was named after King George II of England. But many do not realize that Georgia is a feminine form of the Greek Georgios, meaning tiller of the soil, or farmer.
I believe this is significant because it illustrates that agriculture is not the No. 1 industry and primary economic driver in our state by accident. Agriculture has long shaped Georgia's history and has been a driving force for local economies across the state. We do not farm because it is all we can do or are forced to do. We farm because it is what we want to do, because it is what we are good at, and what we were always intended to do.
Our rural communities are filled with more than farmers; we are scientists, engineers, educators, entrepreneurs, innovators, marketers and leaders. We are blessed with the perfect soil, climate and people that all combine to make Georgia Nature's Favorite State, and for that we are so very thankful.
We are thankful that Georgia has led the country for years in the production of numerous renowned commodities that contributed more than $73.3 billion to our state's economy and helped form the foundation for our diverse agricultural supply chain. We are thankful to be able to say that Georgia truly leads

the effort in feeding, clothing and housing our great nation. Despite our many blessings, Georgia farmers are certainly
no strangers to the storms of life, both literal and figurative. Late freezes, extended droughts, intensive disease and pest pressure, and excessive rains are a fact of life for all farmers. There is no argument that weather is the one component of agriculture that
can never truly be managed or predicted. Our farmers and residents of South Georgia would certainly
agree that they never predicted a strong hurricane to rip through the heart of Georgia's agricultural sector when some of our most prominent crops were at their most vulnerable. I have witnessed first-hand the devastation that Hurricane Michael left behind. The losses are severe and, in many cases, generational. The destruction of the crops hits harder than just a farmer's bottom line it assaults their heart and soul. Hurricane Michael didn't just wallop the crop itself, it sucker-punched the pride and sole purpose of our farmers by not allowing them to fulfill their mission of harvesting their crops. But despite the best efforts of Hurricane Michael, I know our farmers are still thankful.
They are thankful because they know that despite the current devastation, they still have their agricultural family to help lift them back up. I've personally had the privilege to witness the perseverance and resilience of our farming community, as well as the generosity and kindness of neighbors, friends and even strangers.
Our farmers will persevere. They will not give up. They will overcome. They will withstand the storm and persist. They will not stop. They will sustain the course and continue their mission of feeding, clothing and housing the world. Just as our forefathers toiled the land to make Georgia one of our nation's leaders in agriculture, our farmers today are determined to rebuild and replant to retain agriculture's title of Georgia's top industry. And it is for these reasons that I am forever thankful for our farmers.
Centennial Family Farm Program celebrates the preservation of Georgia's agricultural heritage

ties were recognized in an event hosted by the Georgia Historic Preservation Division, Georgia Farm Bureau, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Georgia EMC, Georgia Forestry Commission and Georgia National Fair and Agricenter, with support from the Farm Bureau Women's Leadership Committee, on the inaugural day of the 2018 Georgia National Fair.
Farms hold a central role in the heritage of our state, having formed the economic, cultural and family foundation for generations of Georgians. All farms earning recognition have continuously operated for 100 years or more. More than 530 farms have been recognized through the Georgia Centennial Farm Program since its inception in 1993.
Recognition is given to farm owners through one of three distinguished awards: The Centennial Heritage Farm Award honors farms owned by members of the same fam-
ily for 100 years or more and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places; the Centennial Farm Award does not require continual family ownership, but farms must be at least 100 years old and listed in the NRHP; the Centennial Family Farm Award recognizes farms owned by members of the same family for 100 years or more that are not listed in the NRHP.
The 2018 Centennial Farm Program award recipients are:
Georgia Centennial Heritage Farm Award: Lebanon Plantation, Chatham County
Georgia Centennial Family Farm Award: Darsey Family Farm, Appling County Malbone Farms, Bartow County Hillhouse Farms, Cherokee County Chas H. Cannon Family Farm, Colquitt

Mercer Medical Moment: On aging and drug interactions
By Brad Lian, Associate Professor Department of Community Medicine, School of Medicine, Mercer University and Adam Kiefer, Professor, Distinguished Professor Department of Chemistry, College of Liberal Arts, Mercer University
Lian
Life expectancies in the U.S. have increased substantially over the past
century, from approximately 50 years in 1910 to around 78 years today. Co-
inciding with this aging of the population or this demographic transition
where older folks represent a larger segment of society than ever before is
what is often referred to as an epidemiologic transition. Epidemiology is
essentially the study of the causes, distribution and effects of health-related
states and events among populations.
As the population ages, chronic, degenerative diseases and disorders such
as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and cancer replace infectious and
communicable diseases as the leading causes of death and disability in soci-
Kiefer
ety. And this makes sense. We've made remarkable progress these past hun-
dred years identifying, raising awareness of and addressing communicable
diseases such as measles and tuberculosis, so many of these cases and rates have gone down.
At the same time, as people live longer, the chance of developing a chronic disease or two has
increased. Indeed, estimates of the average number of chronic diseases per person in the adult
population today range between two and seven.
The increase in rates of chronic diseases and conditions means that more people than ever
before are taking more prescription drugs to address these issues. Taking medications beats dy-
ing, after all. Unfortunately, without care or consideration of possible drug-drug interactions, it
can sometimes lead to death as well. In short, potentially problematic drug-drug interactions are
an increasingly important concern for the medical community as society ages and the number
of patients receiving concurrent medications to address multiple chronic conditions increases.
Specifically, a drug-drug interaction occurs when the effectiveness or toxicity of one medi-
cation is affected by another medicine or substance administered for medical purposes. They
can occur in many forms. Common causes include differential binding of two drug substances
to plasma proteins, whereby a newly prescribed drug can impact bound/unbound levels of an
existing medication, potentially changing the therapeutic effects of either or both.
Certain drugs can also interfere with rates of metabolic breakdown of other medications,
which can lead to potentially dangerous variations in blood levels of existing or potentially
prescribed drugs. Moreover, some drugs can interfere with the uptake of other drugs, which
can reduce exposure levels of desired therapies and ultimately delay, curb or inhibit patient out-
comes. These aren't exactly rare events. A recent study found that up to 21 percent of adverse
drug-related hospital admissions among veterans were due to drug interactions.
Cook Georgia Grown:
Barnyard upside-down cornbread
Ingredients: 1 large Vidalia (or sweet) onion, peeled and
thinly sliced 3 Tbsps. unsalted butter tsp. salt 4 slices bacon 3 Tbsps. dark brown sugar 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour cup yellow enriched cornmeal 1/3 cup granulated sugar 2 tsps. baking powder tsp. salt cup heavy cream cup whole milk cup vegetable oil 2 whole eggs
Drug-drug interactions are often hard to predict, however. People are different, and a patient's genetic profile plays an important role in the efficacy of a prescribed medication. For instance, mutations in genes relevant to a drug's uptake, metabolism or disposal can have dramatic impacts on drugs' effects. Certain mutations can improve the efficacy of a drug by inducing favorable changes in the way the drug binds its site of action, while others can reduce a drug's effect by preventing or impairing its uptake in target tissues.
Adding to the predictive difficulty of interactions is the fact that the precise mechanisms by which some drugs work are still open to debate. For example, metformin perhaps the most widely prescribed Type 2 diabetes drug may work differently or not at all for some people. This is even more cause for increased diligence on the part of all involved with medication regimens.
Discoveries and advancements in medicine occur daily. We're living longer and healthier because of this. But we can't take our health or the medications we may rely upon for our health for granted. It's always a good idea to occasionally spend a few minutes reviewing one's medications and to keep updated on the medical literature related to one's diseases and conditions. Doing so is especially important during any period of change. Listen to your body.

Georgie's Drive Thru Pecan Country
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state of Georgia promoting our No. 1 industry agriculture! Georgia is the No. 1 producer of pecans, no matter how you say it! Unlike peanuts, pecans grow on trees. Sometimes pecan trees aren't ready to give up their crop when it's time to pick them, so a tree shaker is used to harvest them. Last week, Georgina and I took the pups down to J & K Pecans near McRae to see a tree shaker in action. Those pecans came down like rain when Mr. Keith shook that tree. As we were leaving the pecan orchard, the pups asked what kind of pecan treats I like to eat during the holidays. I told them: "Well, there's pecan turtles, pecan bear claws, pecan divinity, pecan fudge, pecan toffee, pecan coffee, roasted pecans, toasted pecans, honey-glazed pecans, sugar-coated pecans, salted pecans, baked pecans, pecan brittle, pecan popcorn, pecan halves, pecan pieces, chopped pecans. There's sriracha pecans, candied pecans, honey barbeque pecans, pecan pie, pecan pound. ..." My youngest pup, Ginny, interrupted that thought to say, "Okay, Dad, we get it. Pecans are good with everything, no matter how you shake it!"
Preparation: Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Dice bacon strips into -inch pieces. Using a Ziploc bag, add bacon to 3 Tbsps. brown sugar.
Toss to coat. Set aside.
In 10-inch iron skillet, melt 3 Tbsps. butter. Add thinly sliced Vidalia (sweet) onion. Saut until onion becomes soft. Add salt and continue to cook until onions become light golden brown. Remove onions from pan and set aside.
Add sugared bacon to pan and cook until lightly browned. When bacon is cooked, add back the onions. Keep pan warm.
Meanwhile, in large bowl, stir flour with cornmeal and other dry ingredients.
In medium bowl, beat 2 eggs with cream, milk and oil. Add to dry ingredients and whisk until just blended. Do not overbeat.
Carefully spoon cornbread mix into hot skillet, carefully distributing over the cooked bacon and onions.
Bake in 400-degree oven about 20 minutes or until center tests done. Remove from oven and let rest in pan about 5 minutes.
Carefully invert onto suitable plate. Serve warm or room temperature. Yields 8 to 10 servings.
-Submitted by Marie Bruno of Greensboro, who advises: "Do not rush the sauting process. Cook, stirring frequently, until onions and bacon are nicely browned. They will continue to caramelize as the cornbread cooks."

UGA Economist:
Farmers need immediate relief from Hurricane Michael
By Clint Thompson
To avoid losing their farms following Hurricane Michael, Georgia farmers need financial relief as soon as possible, according to Jeff Dorfman, a professor and agricultural economist in the University of Georgia Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.
South Georgia growers are still picking up the pieces after the hurricane hit Oct. 10-11, destroying homes and agricultural commodities. The storm's timing could not have been worse for the producers who were impacted, as cotton, pecans, peanuts and vegetables were ready to be harvested.
"The timing of this was not good," Dorfman said. "Farmers have already spent most of, if not all, their money growing their crop. If you lose a crop at the start of the growing season, at least you didn't put any of those extra inputs into it."
Dorfman believes growers, who normally would have sold their crops by now and had revenue to pay off production loans, are not going to be able to cover those costs this year.
"We have at most three months, maybe as little as one month, to sort that out, but this definitely could put a lot of farmers out of business," Dorfman said.
Hurricane Michael caused more than $2.5 billion in losses to Georgia's agricultural sector, the state's leading industry, according to estimates from the UGA Cooperative Extension agents and agricultural economists.
"Until we know how much insurance relief we get, how much insurance is going to cover, how much disaster relief payments are going to cover, we
won't know how bad the bite on the broader economy is going to be," he
said.
Cotton and pecans are the Georgia crops impacted most by the storm. Pe-
cans suffered $100 million in direct losses to this year's crop, $260 million
in losses due to lost trees and $200 million in direct losses for future income.
"It's going to take pecans 15 years to recover; that's a pretty hard hit. And
Georgia's got a bunch of businesses that depend on pecans, especially dur-
ing the holidays. We've got fewer pecans to use in other businesses now,"
Dorfman said.
Georgia's cotton crop suffered between $550 million and $600 million in
direct losses. Poultry, the leading agricultural industry in Georgia, suffered
$20 million in direct losses to houses and $8 million in losses to birds.
"We lost 129 poultry houses and I think some of those will not be rebuilt.
Poultry will be smaller for a while," Dorfman said.
According to the latest calculations, Georgia's vegetables suffered $480
million in direct losses, while timber was dealt $763 million in losses.

agriculture, go online to t.uga.edu/4x1. For more recovery resources from

The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Georgia Grown program is partnering with Georgia-based cookware retailer The Cook's Warehouse to offer artisan food products for sale online at www.cookswarehouse.com/georgia-grown. The new e-commerce web page solely devoted to Georgia Grown merchandise went live Oct. 15, just in time for holiday shopping.
"Whether you're looking to spice up a favorite recipe or looking for the perfect holiday gift, Georgia Grown artisan products will satisfy the most demanding tastes," said Holly Chute, Executive Chef of the Georgia Grown program. "They are gifts that give many times over because every purchase supports our local farm families and businesses." The products will be supported by an advertising campaign featuring videos of Chute performing cooking demonstrations using Georgia Grown items. Chute's recipes will be easyto-prepare Georgia Grown dishes to serve friends and family during the busy holiday party season. "Plus, these artisan foods are a truly thoughtful gift for any dinner guest to bring their host," added Chute. The videos will be targeted to food enthusiasts in Georgia and will appear on popular social media platforms under the tagline: "Shop closer to home with Georgia Grown."

Registration for the University of Georgia's 2019 Flavor of Georgia Food Product Contest, which is coordinated each year by the UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, is now open at flavorofga.com.
"Flavor of Georgia is an exciting, one-of-akind contest for our state's food artisans," said David Goodson, co-owner of 2018 Flavor of Georgia winner Goodson Pecans. "It serves to bring tremendous recognition to producers of quality craft food made with delicious Georgia-grown ingredients. I highly recommend all craft food makers to enter it. We have been so grateful for the opportunities our win has opened up for the growth of our small business and the support we have had from great people across our state and region."
To date, more than 1,300 food products have been entered in the contest. Some have increased their wholesale distribution, improved internet sales or experienced better traffic at local farmers markets.
"The Flavor of Georgia contest is a great opportunity to showcase the variety and quality of the delicious products being made in Georgia these days, and it's also a chance for entrepreneurs to introduce their products to larger markets," said Sharon P. Kane, the contest coordinator and food business development specialist at the UGA Center for Agri-
business and Economic Development. The early registration fee is $100 per prod-
uct entry and continues through Jan. 14, 2019. After that date, the price increases to $150 and remains open until Jan. 28. All entries are featured in the annual product directory, which is seen by leading food industry buyers and media outlets.
Contest finalists are invited to participate in the final round of judging in Atlanta on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, through a live pitch to judges, with an awards reception immediately following.
The grand prize winner will be awarded an exhibit space for up to two registrants at the Georgia Food Industry Association annual convention a value of more than $1,500 and three consultation sessions from the UGA Food Product Innovation and Commercialization Center on product or process design, ingredient functionality, sensory testing and/ or shelf-life determination, a $1,500 value.
All finalists receive a one-year Georgia Grown membership, courtesy of the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The contest is being held in conjunction with the department's statewide Agricultural Awareness Week, which celebrates all aspects of the agricultural industry, from farmers to food businesses.
