Kendall McWilliams, associate editor of the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin, photographs the sunrise over Spence Field in Moultrie on Field Day July 24 at the Sunbelt Ag Expo. Field Day draws hundreds of farmers and agribusiness professionals for a free sneak-peek at the new equipment, technologies and research findings to be featured at the full expo Oct. 16-18. Covering Ground: Turfgrass industry is an unsung ag hero

By Kendall McWilliams
kendall.mcwilliams@agr.georgia.gov
Georgia's agricultural landscape lends itself to the production of a multitude of agricultural commodities broilers, blueberries and peanuts are some of the most notable products the state brings to the table. However, there is another agricultural industry in Georgia that covers a lot of ground turfgrass.
"Most folks don't think about turf as an agricultural commodity, but in 2016, we had turf ranked at 24th out of the top 60 commodities in the state," said Clint Waltz, Ph.D., professor of Crop and Soil Sciences, Turf Management at the University of Georgia in Griffin. "That puts us nearly in the top third of commodities in Georgia and that's just what's harvested in the field."
According to Waltz, the economic impact of Georgia's turfgrass and related industries is substantial. The spectrum of the turfgrass industry ranges from production to golf course and sports field management to commercial lawn maintenance and consumer horticulture. A 2012 study conducted by UGA found that collectively the industry draws in an estimated $7.8 billion toward Georgia's economy

annually, all the while helping to beautify lawns, athletic fields and golf courses around the world.
In addition to economic prosperity, the turfgrass, landscape management and related industries account for 87,000 full- and parttime jobs in Georgia. Waltz added that those numbers are conservative as the market has grown tremendously over the last six years.
Georgia falls shy of competing with Florida and Texas in terms acres of sod in production. However, Waltz says, what Georgia turfgrass producers lack in quantity they strive to make up for in quality. The UGA Turf Team, in partnership with the Georgia Crop Improvement Association and industry partners, works to ensure that end consumers receive grass varieties of superior quality.
"Turf is a quality business. Unless you are a sod producer, you don't worry about yield. It's not like cotton, soybeans, peanuts or beef cattle production where yields mean something," said Waltz. "For us, you have to have a grass out there that's dark green, has tight canopy density, ability to mow it low, and it has to perform on a golf course or sports field or home lawn."
With breeding programs located on UGA's

Griffin and Tifton campuses and turf scientists working actively on the Griffin, Tifton and Athens campuses, the interdisciplinary turf team has developed a reputation as a leader in research, industry training and turfgrass management programs.
According to Wayne Hanna, Ph.D., a former UGA turfgrass breeder on the Tifton campus, Tifton has been the hub for warmseason turfgrass research and development for more than 60 years.
"The program took off in the fifties when Dr. Burton released TifGreen," said Hanna. "That was a big step when he released TifGreen because before that on golf courses, they had sand greens or common bermudagrass."
Breeders and turf scientists on the Tifton and Griffin campuses have collectively released 19 Georgia turfgrass cultivars since 1952. Among these are some of the world's most successful turfgrass varieties. These Georgia varieties can be found on golf courses, home lawns, and athletic fields across the globe even on the official fields of the World Cup, Olympics venues and UGA's Sanford Stadium.

spring, which segued right back into winter before warming up again. It has

been mostly rainy and humid since, with short periods of just hot. The mosquito

onslaught got off to a slow start in a lot of places, but that changed, especially

with the floodwater nuisance species.

Currently, we are seeing a lot of WNV+ mosquitoes in the four counties do-

ing testing, but there have yet to be any human or horse cases reported. Our first

WNV+ mosquito pool was collected in mid-June.

So how does this compare to last year, and why? In 2017 we had one human West Nile Virus

case reported in April. By the end of July, we had 15 WNV cases reported. The total for the year

was 63 (this includes both symptomatic cases and viral positives by blood test).

We had one WNV+ horse reported in early June (2017 total was 11), and 105 WNV+ mosquito

pools reported from three counties of the five that were testing (2017 total was 265 pools). In 2017,

the first WNV+ mosquitoes were detected in mid-June. The last WNV+ pools were collected in

mid-October. Peaks in numbers of WNV+ pools occurred in July.

So, what was the difference? In 2017, we also had an early spring. We then had a spell of hot

dry weather, which kept the mosquitoes in the wooded areas, allowing the virus to build up in the

bird and mosquito populations. In 2017, we did not see the drop back into winter that we expe-

rienced this year. That cold spell didn't do much to kill off the mosquitoes, except for a few that

were already out and flying, but it did

slow everything down. Since WNV is

a zoonotic disease, that becomes very

important.

Culex quinquefasciatus, the pri-

mary WNV vector in Georgia, over-

winters as an adult. It is often one of

the first species flying around after

the temperature warms to over 50

degrees Fahrenheit. Figure 1 shows

how the cold snap affected Cx quin-

quefasciatus, leading to a slower start

to the WNV season; birds typically

animals in this case birds that can

affect humans. However, humans do not produce much virus, so we can't infect mosquitoes. WNV

transmission depends on the vector species, Culex quinquefasciatus (and a few others), feeding

on non-immune birds and spreading the virus in the bird populations. Culex quinquefasciatus is

primarily a bird feeder, but it will bite mammals, so if there are enough infected birds to infect

a lot of mosquitoes, the risk to humans and horses goes up. If the cycle in the birds gets an early

start due to an early spring season, then the risk to humans goes up. That didn't happen this year.

However, it is not that straight-forward. Weather conditions throughout the season continue to

have an impact on transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. So, given the current variable weather

conditions, right about now I need a crystal ball to figure out just what is going to happen next.

Georgie's Drive Thru Greene County
Hello! I'm Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot. I travel the state promoting Georgia's No. 1 industry, agriculture! Everybody knows the University of Georgia has a bulldog. But did you know they have a horse, too? Up on Georgia Hwy. 15, between Watkinsville and Greensboro, lies the Iron Horse Farm. And on that farm, there is a horse...E-I-E-I-O! The 12-foot Iron Horse sculpture was built for UGA back in the 1950s by an artist named Abbott Pattison. The horse was placed in front of one of the new dormitories on campus named Reed Hall. Boy, it got a lot of attention from students with too much free time on their hands. They tried feeding it lots of hay one night. When it didn't eat any, they tried to set it on fire. Some people just don't appreciate good art. It was at that point one of the South Campus staff, named L.C. Curtis, offered to move the horse to greener pastures on his farm in Greene County no less. The school took him up on the offer. Then a few years ago, the university bought the horse back from Mr. Curtis' family, plus the 660-acre farm underneath it. Today, the Iron Horse Plant Sciences Farm supports field research, demonstrations and a teaching laboratory used by UGA's Crop and Soil Sciences Department.

Crop insurance deadline nears in Georgia
Onion growers need to make insurance decisions soon
VALDOSTA USDA's Risk Management Agency reminds Georgia onion growers that the final date to apply for crop insurance coverage is Aug. 31. Current policyholders who wish to make changes to their existing coverage also have until the Aug. 31 sales closing date to do so.
Federal crop insurance is critical to the farm safety net. It helps producers and owners manage revenue risks and strengthens the rural economy. Coverage is available for onions in Appling, Bulloch, Candler, Emanuel, Evans, Jeff Davis, Laurens, Long, Montgomery, Screven, Tattnall, Toombs, Treutlen and Wayne counties.
Growers are encouraged to visit their crop insurance agent soon to learn specific details for the 2019 crop year. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at the RMA Agent Locator. Growers can use the RMA Cost Estimator to get a premium amount estimate of their insurance needs online.
For more information about crop insurance and the modern farm safety net, visit www. rma.usda.gov.

Mercer Medical Moment:
Motherhood shouldn't lead to loss of self

By Jennifer L. Barkin, M.S., Ph.D.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 3,945,875 babies born in the United States in 2017. This means that close to as many women became mothers for the first time or welcomed another child or children into their families. Being a mother to an infant is hard, as women are in a position of having to integrate child-care tasks into their already busy lives.
In those early months and years of their child's life, women often juggle multiple roles (mother, wife, daughter, employee, friend, community member) and child-care responsibilities (doctor's visits, infant feedings, taking care of other children). Sleep loss, which is common for new mothers, can make this change more difficult and lead to depressed feelings and mood swings.
Many women find themselves taking a closer look at how they spend their time after having a child. This is perfectly normal and healthy. However, it is important not to eliminate activities that are fun and relaxing, such as spending time with friends and family, exercising, reading or watching movies. In fact, feeling supported by family and friends is very important in new motherhood. Social support can help new mothers maintain their emotional balance and avoid getting overwhelmed. Too drastic a change in daily life can be painful, confusing and may lead to feelings of "loss of self."
So, while it's true that becoming a mother requires some sacrifice, it is important for new mothers to practice self-care and to be aware of their moods and emotions.
This does not mean that all changes in mood after childbirth are dangerous or will lead to postpartum depression or anxiety. Most women experience the "baby blues," which can mean having less patience, crying more often, feeling anxious or irritable, and having trouble concentrating.
While the exact cause of baby blues is not known, it is likely due to adjustments in hormones, a change in daily activities and sleep loss. Baby blues usually last for about two weeks and should go away on their own. They do not require treatment other than good self-care, including adequate nutrition and hygiene, and support from others.
If these feelings continue or worsen, talk to a health care provider and be as honest as possible in describing symptoms. Remember, these feelings are common but require attention if they persist.
Eighty percent of women experience the baby blues, but about 1 in 7 have PPD. PPD lasts longer and can include feelings of panic, weight gain or loss, losing interest in things you normally enjoy, and being tired all the time. The most severe symptoms of PPD are thoughts of harming oneself or one's baby. These symptoms are rare but serious. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself or your child, you should report this to your healthcare provider immediately.
For more information on PPD, visit this website: https://www.marchofdimes.org/pregnancy/ postpartum-depression.aspx.
While PPD tends to get most of the attention, about 1 in 10 women develop anxiety or become more anxious during the postpartum period. Considering the responsibility of having another human to take care of, this is understandable and nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, some healthcare providers have said that, in their observation, anxiety is more common in new mothers than depression. What might anxiety feel like? Constant worry, racing thoughts and changes in appetite or ability to rest to name a few. For more information on postpartum anxiety, visit this website: http://www. postpartumprogress.com/the-symptoms-of-postpartum-depression-anxiety-in-plain-mama-english.
It is true that treatments, such as medication or formal counseling, which can be very helpful, must be initiated through a healthcare provider. However, there are several things you can do to help yourself daily: 1. Surround yourself with supportive family and friends. Social support is one of the most im-
portant ingredients for maintaining mental and emotional health. Think of social support as nourishment for your heart and mind. If support is not available through friends and family, there are several online resources where moms can connect. Check out Postpartum Support International's "Chat With an Expert" webpage: http://www.postpartum.net/chat-with-an-expert/. 2. Maintain your own personal hygiene. Too often, women sacrifice meals, showers and sleep after having a baby. This often backfires since the mother's health is key to the entire family's health. By finding time to take care of yourself, you will be better able to care for your family. 3. Don't abandon your hobbies. We all know that becoming a mother requires reprioritization. However, too much change can be destabilizing. Do your best to keep up with the activities that are most important to you. - Jennifer L. Barkin is associate professor of Community Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecol-
ogy at the Mercer University School of Medicine.

Ingredients: 1 lb. ground bison 1 large egg cup chopped bell pepper cup chopped sweet onion cup quick oats
Preparation: Heat a little oil in a large iron skillet. Beat the egg with seasoning of your choice, then add in the meat, bell peppers, onions and oats. Mix well, and form into patties. Cook over medium-low heat about 10 minutes each side, depending on thickness flip and top with catsup, if desired. This recipe also works well with ground venison and beef, or a mix of the two.

Field Day offers farmers a free preview of October Expo

Photos by Amy Carter/GDA
Field talk Trams stop at 30 different stations on the 600-acre Darrell Williams Research Farm on Field Day, where speakers cover a range of topics.

MOULTRIE It's the end of July in Southwest Georgia. The cotton stands about waist-high to a scientist, its cream and pink flowers shouting down his technical review of crop conditions with more colorful talk of the coming crop. The corn, meanwhile, is still reveling in summer, shooting tassels into a bright blue sky like fireworks on the Fourth of July. Acres of soybeans, peanuts and turfgrass stretch as far as the eye can see, waving in the breeze like green water on a warm Georgia lake.
This is what Field Day at the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo looks like. It's the peak of growing season, the halfway mark to harvest, the time of year when farmers leave their fields to sit a spell and catch up on the latest news in the industry.
Field Day is a free annual event that offers growers and agribusiness representatives a sneak peek of the equipment and technology that will be on display at the Sunbelt Ag Expo in October. It's also an opportunity to hear directly from scientists, researchers and ag extension agents about weed and disease pressures on current crops, and the steps they are taking to understand and manage the various agents that work to undermine the Georgia farmer's success.
The Sunbelt Ag Expo is scheduled for Oct. 16-18 at Spence Field in Moultrie. Learn more at sunbeltexpo.com.

In the spotlight UGA extension weed scientist Stanley Culpepper draws the attention of a videographer from WTOC-TV in Savannah while talking about the value of doing "applied research" at Sunbelt, which is "research that can help the grower the same year that we do it."

-Amy Carter/GDA

Social mavens Katibeth Mims of Donalsonville, standing left, and Loren Lindler from South Carolina, standing right, listen to a presentation in the field. Students from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton serve on the social media team that offers live updates of Field Day and Expo activities each year.

A penny for his thoughts A farmer makes a closer inspection of the Coastcross II plot in the Bermudagrass Variety Garden on the Darrell Williams Research Farm at the Sunbelt Ag Expo.

Like frost in July Dennis Hancock, Ph.D., state forage extension specialist at the University of Georgia, shows damage from a stem maggot infestation of bermudagrass on the Sunbelt research plot. The emerging pest has the potential to cause $40 million in damages annually to Georgia's turfgrass industry, Hancock said.

Covering Ground: Legislature validates industry with funding for upgrades
Continued From Page 1

According to Waltz, increasing desirable qualities, or hybrid vigor, is the end goal when developing new cultivars. Turfgrass products possessing desirable characteristics including drought tolerance, pesticide resistance, salt hardiness, herbicide resistance, shade tolerance and other beneficial qualities perform at the optimal level.
The value of Georgia's turfgrass sector was validated in 2014, when the Georgia General Assembly approved $11.5 million for facility upgrades for statewide turfgrass facilities during the legislative session. This afforded the replacement of outdated facilities on all three UGA campuses. Nearly nine million dollars of the enhancement budget was allocated to building new offices, labs, greenhouses, a headhouse, growth chambers, classrooms and conference rooms at the turf research and education center at UGA's Griffin Campus, said Waltz.
"It's a state-of-the-art facility that matches the notoriety and historical production of the turf program," said Waltz. "We want to maintain our academic prowess and hire-in future faculty members to replace those who are retiring, and we have to have the facilities to recruit them and retain them."
The efforts of industry partners to maintain the integrity and reputation of Georgia turfgrass through successful re-

search and management practices will promote continued success for the turf sector of Georgia's Green Industry.
"It's a team effort. The turf team, our breeders and UGA have been very involved with our producers and Georgia Crop Improvement Association. Our breeders and Univer-

sity of Georgia Research Foundation want to make sure we are producing a quality product," said Waltz. "We've got a brand that has become well known and we are looking to protect that with quality assurance."
Brian Schwartz, Ph.D., turfgrass breeder at UGA Tifton, distributes marking flags while administering a tour of the UGA Tifton turfgrass research plots after the 72nd Annual Southeastern Turfgrass Conference.
