Poultry owners are urged to observe strict biosecurity protocols
Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza confirmed in Chattooga County

A flock of chickens at a commercial poultry breeding operation located in Chattooga County tested positive for H7, presumptive low pathogenic avian influenza, in late March. This is the first confirmation of avian influenza in domestic poultry in Georgia. Avian influenza does not pose a risk to the food supply, and no affected animals entered the food chain. The risk of human infection with avian influenza during poultry outbreaks is very low.
The virus was identified during routine presale screening for the commercial facility and was confirmed as H7 avian influenza by the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa. As a precaution the affect-

ed flock has been depopulated. Officials are testing and monitoring other flocks within the surveillance area. No other flocks have tested positive or demonstrated any clinical signs.
The announcement follows similar confirmations from Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee in recent weeks. The Georgia case is considered a presumptive low pathogenic avian influenza because the flock did not show any signs of illness. While LPAI is different from HPAI, control measures are under way as a precautionary measure. Wild birds are the source of the virus. Avian influenza virus strains often occur naturally in wild birds, and can infect wild migratory birds without causing illness.

"Poultry is the top sector of our number one industry, agriculture, and we are committed to protecting the livelihoods of the many farm families that are dependent on it," said Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary W. Black. "In order to successfully do that, it is imperative that we continue our efforts of extensive biosecurity."
The official order prohibiting poultry exhibitions and the assembling of poultry to be sold issued by the state veterinarian's office on March 16, 2017, remains in effect. The order prohibits all poultry exhibitions, sales at regional and county fairs, festivals, swap meets, live bird markets, flea markets, and

auctions. The order also prohibits the concentration, collection or assembly of poultry of all types, including wild waterfowl from one or more premises for purposes of sale. Shipments of eggs or baby chicks from National Poultry Improvement Plan, Avian Influenza Clean, approved facilities are not affected by this order.
Owners of poultry flocks are encouraged to closely observe their birds and report a sudden increase in the number of sick birds or bird deaths to the state veterinarian's office at 855.491.1432. UGA Extension pesticide training fees, testing, credits to change May 1 New system to help farmers, pesticide applicators with training for licensure

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension will change the way it offers private pesticide applicator training starting May 1.

ATHENS One of University of Georgia Cooperative Extension's key commitments to the state and its farmers is to provide the training and information that private pesticide applicators need to ensure the safe use of pesticides. The way that UGA Extension offers trainings, exams and continuing education classes for pesticide applicators' license renewals will change in the coming months. This change will ensure that UGA Extension can continue to provide pesticide safety education throughout the state, while staying in line with changes mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
"Our commitment to the safety of

those who work on farms, those who eat the produce grown in our state, and the general public has always been a big part of what we do here," said Mark McCann, assistant dean for agriculture and natural resources extension at UGA. "We will continue to make sure that those who use restricted-use pesticides as part of their livelihoods landscapers and farmers will have 24/7 access to the training they need to use those pesticides safely."
UGA Extension has developed a statespecific curriculum and exam series for private pesticide applicators.
To comply with EPA rule changes and to offer Georgia's farmers and pesticide operators more focused, local instruction, the UGA Pesticide Education Program created a new curriculum and set in place

an online training system which is available 24/7.
While these changes will be more convenient for farmers and other private pesticide applicators, they will require a $25 fee for the online training program. The current program is offered at no charge.
Along with the EPA rule change that allows for more local control over training, federal funds that previously supported training have been rolled back, so UGA Extension will have to charge fees to offset that loss of funding.
"We have tried to position the fee so it's not an impediment, but it does offset a portion of the costs," McCann said. "There is no additional licensing fee from the Georgia Department of Agriculture."

Reader Profile: Ella Mae Beach

As a longtime advertiser of plants and flower seeds, Ella Mae Beach has touched the lives of many Market Bulletin readers over the years. Her offerings have spawned and enhanced the gardens and landscapes of people across Georgia.
Beach worked for the Market Bulletin for 19 years before retiring in 1991, but she was a part of the lives of employees of the Georgia Department of Agriculture who never met her for many years afterward. If you wonder how that is possible, it is because of a large, framed photograph that hung in the Marketing Division office in Atlanta. The photo was used for the 1987 Market Bulletin calendar. The friendly woman waving from the front porch of a Victorian home to the fruit and vegetable vendor with his mule-drawn wagon was none other than Ella Mae Beach.
"We found a young couple who had renovated their home in Grant Park who allowed us to shoot there. I brought old things I had, and my supervisor brought what she had. That apron everyone

used to wear aprons has pink flowers on it that

match the rose of Sharon blooming in the front

yard," she said. "I think they picked me because I

was the most `country.'"

Beach grew up on a farm in Suches, and a rural

upbringing served her well as she worked on ads

for the Market Bulletin.

"Some of my coworkers didn't know corn

from beans. I was raised on a farm, and I knew

what people were writing in about. I could proof-

read, edit and place their ads appropriately," she

said.

Beach speaks fondly of her days with the Mar-

ket Bulletin. However, she still recalls the huge

three-month chore of updating the mailing list,

one of the first duties she was charged to perform.

At the time, the Market Bulletin was still avail-

able for free, and subscribers numbered more

than 100,000.

After she retired from the agriculture depart-

ment, Beach became an advertiser.

Ladies Homestead Gathering helps women cultivate self-sufficiency in the home

With the assistance of the internet it's easy to learn how to take care of chickens, keep bees and maintain a vegetable garden. What's not always easy is finding the courage to try something new. The Ladies Homestead Gathering is an organization whose members encourage and teach each other about different aspects of homesteading.
It started in January 2011 when Cyndi Ball posted an invitation on Facebook to all women interested in homesteading to join her at her farmhouse on the Lazy B Farm in Statham. Several showed up and enjoyed the opportunity to connect with women who had similar aspirations and interests. The success of the first get-together led to subsequent meetings, and eventually turned into the National Ladies Homestead Gathering.
Currently there are 17 Ladies Homestead Gathering chapters in seven states. The organization's mission statement (LadiesHomesteadGathering.org) explains: "The National Ladies Homestead Gathering exists to provide a welcoming environment, where women can share new ideas, celebrate victories, address challenges and cultivate community with like-minded women. All women are welcome who have a dream, calling or desire to be more self-sufficient. Single or married, in the planning phase or a veteran homesteader every woman has something to contribute or gain from coming together."
Leslie Johnson is the current president of the organization's Athens chapter. Johnson said that the drive behind the homesteading movement is the "desire to be more self-sufficient and less reliant on buying things." She said people are usually at least a few generations removed from farmers, and people living in cities often express a desire to go back to a rural lifestyle. Backyard chickens and beehives are popping up all over metro areas.
At monthly gatherings the group covers topics ranging from herb gardens to making butter, from foraging to sewing aprons.
"The goal of the homestead gathering is to cultivate a community of women," Johnson said. "Some skills aren't easy to understand. Who do you call when your goat is having a prob-

Johnson initially joined because of her interest in gardening. She said she often called the extension service when she had questions, but what she really wanted was to go to someone's garden and see how they were doing things.
"I had some experience, but I wanted to do more. The more exposed you are to something, the more comfortable you are doing it," she said.
Emily Nolan joined to meet women with similar interests. "I just moved to Watkinsville, and was looking to meet like-minded people," she said. "I grew up on a farm and always liked to garden. It's been a great way to meet people. Every spectrum of Ag is represented, and it's interesting to learn what everyone is doing." Kristy Walker is closer to the family farm experience than most people, nowadays, but is still interested in learning from others about their own farming techniques. "I had farmers in my family," she said. "My husband and I are trying to do whatever we can on the land. We have a third of an acre and we are just getting started. We just got chickens, and we

have bees on the way. I like learning about other people's experiences, and it's a great way to get advice."
Several members said that being a part of the Ladies Homestead Gathering has expanded their interests and given them the confidence to try new things.
The National Ladies Homestead Gathering works to support women of all experience levels and backgrounds. Whether a woman comes from farming or lives in the city, everyone is welcome. Go bananas over banana shrub

The flowers of banana shrub smell like ripe bananas or banana-flavored Popsicles. The fragrance is strongest in the afternoon, and it is wonderful.
If you have children, consider planting a banana shrub. Children don't feign sophisticated tastes. Banana shrub smells like bananas. Children love bananas. It's a simple equation, and it's one that works for me, too. Banana shrub is one of my favorite fragrant shrubs. In fact, I would put it in my top ten.
The flowers of banana shrub open in spring, usually early to mid-April in Atlanta. However, like many crops, they're about two weeks ahead of expectations this year. The flowers are cream to creamy yellow in color, edged in purple, and modestly attractive when viewed close at hand. They are small about an inch long and wide and not showy. Purple Queen and Port Wine are two newer varieties that exhibit more purple coloration. I do not know how fragrant these are compared with the type normally offered.
The flowers resemble little magnolias, and recent analysis has led taxonomists to place the shrub back in the genus Magnolia where it was many years ago. Its new botanical name

is Magnolia figo, although you will probably see it listed under the former name of Michelia figo for some time to come. However, when you say "banana shrub" and describe it, any nursery worker should know what you are talking about. There is nothing to confuse it with.
Banana shrub is best for coastal, southern and middle Georgia. It may be killed in the

mountains and can suffer winter damage in the northern Piedmont. I occasionally have seen leaf damage and dieback from cold temperatures in Atlanta, but nothing severe enough to keep me from growing it here.
Banana shrub is evergreen with glossy bright green leaves and can reach 10 feet high with an equal spread. Most specimens grow to a height of six feet, especially outside the mildest areas. It is slow-growing. Don't try to force faster growth with fertilizer. With only occasional pruning it can easily be kept as an informal hedge. I would not use it as a hedge in an area where it could be damaged by cold. Of course, it is an excellent choice for planting next to a patio, porch or sidewalk where its fragrance can be appreciated up close.
Banana shrub prefers well-drained soil, preferably high in organic matter, and a sunny to partially shaded location. Once established, it is drought tolerant but appreciates a mulch of pine straw, pine bark or composted leaves.
A few good companion shrubs are tea olive, camellia, abelia, forsythia, Florida leucothoe, inkberry holly, Florida anise (Illicium floridanum), cornelian cherry dogwood (Cornus mas), laurustinus and feijoa.
Other companions will arrive at blooming time with little noses and wide eyes when they discover the shrub that smells like bananas.

BBQ Rub
This is a simple BBQ rub for pork, beef, or chicken. We leave out the salt so you can adjust to your liking.
Ingredients: 1 Tbsp. black peppercorn Tbsp. cumin Seeds Tbsp. dried thyme Tbsp. dried marjoram Tbsp. cayenne 2 Tbsps. paprika 1 Tbsp. mustard powder 3 Tbsps. dark brown sugar
Directions: Grind the black peppercorn, cumin and thyme in a spice grinder. Mix with remaining spice in a

large mixing bowl to evenly combine. Make sure to season the meat with Kosher salt before seasoning with the rub.

BBQ Sauce
Ingredients: 1 batch of BBQ Rub (above) 1 bottle of good beer (we suggest Georgia-
brewed Ode to Mercy Ale) 1 Tbsp. tomato paste 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar 2 Tbsps. molasses To taste Kosher salt
Directions: In a saucepot over medium heat, bring the beer and BBQ rub to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and add the remaining ingredients. Cook for 10 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat and adjust seasoning.

Food label confusion:
Is it safe to consume food after the expiration date?

Consumer confusion about food labels is a main cause of America's high level of food waste. About 44 percent of food waste sent to landfills comes from consumers, according to the Food Marketing Institute, a trade association for food retailers that is based in Arlington, Va. Confusion over 10 different date labels on food such as Use By, Sell By, Expires On, Best Before, Better if Used By or Best By is largely to blame, according to the institute.
In conjunction with the Grocery Manufac-

turers Association, the institute is encouraging retailers and manufacturers to use one of two new phrases on all food packaging. "Best If Used By" will describe product quality. The food may not taste or perform as expected after that date, but it will still be safe to consume. "Use By" will apply to highly perishable products that should be disposed of after the label date.

UGA: Online classes are now available

This new system will take effect May 1. Major changes in Georgia's program based on the EPA rule change are as follows: Recertification credits: Pesticide applicators were required to attain three hours of continuing education credit every five years. In the future, they will need to attain five hours every five years. This rule needs to be made official within the regulations of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, so it will not take effect until the department updates its rules. New emphasis on safety: All future workshops and field days offering continuing credits for the pesticide licensure will include a section on pesticide safety. This section must take up 10 to 15 minutes of the workshop or field day. Online course fees: In order to cover the costs of instruction, new materials and trainings, online courses will cost $25, which will partially support the UGA Extension Pesticide Education Program. The course is currently free.

Online training: In the past, most training has taken place in county extension offices. The new training will be taken online. Testing is done at the end of each section. A passing score is required to proceed to the next section.
Testing: Trainees now take about two hours to complete the course and certification test. Under the new program, it will take four to five hours to complete. However, individuals can take a break and return to the online course as needed.
Temporary licensure: Currently, farmers can get a temporary license upon completing the exam and the license application with their agent. This will continue in the new program.

At 93, Beach no longer digs plants to sell and only offers seeds. Her dining room table with its tubs and canisters of cleaned seed, small manila envelopes and measuring spoons, looked like it belonged in a seed company. Like a professional, she stored seed in the freezer.
When asked about a tub of rose of Sharon seeds, she commented: "I have those, too, but I couldn't fit them in my ad because of the word limit. I could call it `althea' but some people

wouldn't know what that is." In recent issues she has advertised money plant, mullein
pink (which she also calls rose campion), touch-me-nots, fouro'clocks and devil's trumpet (which she explained points up while the flowers of angel's trumpet point down), and other old favorites.
"It kills me sometimes that I can't get out in the yard like I used to, but I won't let myself get depressed. I stay busy all the time," she said.
Beach's garden testified to her hard work and to the du-

rability of the "old-timey" plants she cultivated. Bright rosy purple thrift covered the bank by the driveway, and bluebells carpeted the front yard. Daffodils, jonquils, pink oxalis, money plant, Lenten roses, wild blue phlox and other flowers and shrubs punctuated the front and back yards.
As the interview came to an end, a tiger swallowtail came by and lightly touched down on one of the bluebells.
"The butterflies love them," she commented. It was a fitting end to an afternoon with a woman who has touched many lives.
