Freezing Temps Damage Crops Statewide
Blueberries hit hard, peaches fare better than expected

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black "very, very conservatively" estimated the state's blueberry crop to be a 60 percent loss during an address before the State House Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee at the Capitol in Atlanta, March 22.
"If it arrives at 75 percent it wouldn't surprise me," Black told committee members.
Two nights of deep and prolonged freezes March 15 and 16, destroyed what promised to be a bumper crop of blueberries worth upwards of $400 million. The state's peach crop took a softer blow than expected, Black said, as did vegetable crops such as peppers.
Black and Rep. Tom McCall, R-Elberton, chair of the House Ag Committee, toured farms in North and South Georgia on March 17 to talk with farmers and assess the damage. After the first night of the freeze, it was thought that the peach crop actually fared worse than the blueberries. Both crops were maturing about three weeks earlier than usual due to a previously mild winter. A second night of freezing temperatures and no protective breeze did far greater damage to the blueberries than the peaches.
"It honestly does not look like it was as bad as we initially thought," said Jeff Cook, area peach agent for the University of Georgia's Agricultural Extension Service in Taylor and Peach counties. "I think a lot of folks are in shock that we didn't get hit any harder than we did."
Judah Echols of Jaemor Farms in Alto, near Gainesville, said he lost about half of his peach
crop. "The other main crop affected was straw-
berries. We lost about 10 percent of our crop," he said on the afternoon of March 21. Later that night, severe storms brought 60 mph winds and golf ball-sized hail to much of North Georgia.
The state's other major spring crop Vidalia onions is still in good shape and was actually helped a little by the cold, Black said.
"The Vidalia crop is the best I've ever seen. It's the best anyone's ever seen. Maybe the cold slowed them down. They were, quite frankly, growing too fast," Black said.
The department recently set April 12 as the official pack date when Vidalia onions can be delivered to market. The date is nearly two weeks earlier than normal due to the overall mild winter.
The extreme freeze of mid-March was felt border to border, with farmers experiencing temperatures as low as 22 degrees as far south as Homerville near the Florida line.
Adair Peterson, president of the 285-mem-
ber Georgia Blueberry Growers Association, worries that news of the weather's effects on the rabbit eye crop will lead buyers to overlook the highbush crop. Growers who deployed overhead frost protection on their highbush fields expect to bring in a good crop of berries in May and June.
"What we want to make absolutely clear is that the highbush crop is probably as large as it's ever been," said Peterson, who lost 120 acres of rabbit eyes and 45 acres of highbush blueberries that were under wind machines on her family farm in Homerville.
Another patch of highbush that was covered by overhead frost protection looks bad around the edges but will probably survive, Peterson said. Prior to the freeze she expected to harvest about 1.2 million pounds of blueberries. Now she expects about 450,000 pounds. Peterson said she will be filing a claim on her crop insurance for the first time against the loss of her rabbit eye berries.
"You spend so much money on this crop and then it's gone," she said.

Federally subsidized crop insurance which has largely replaced federal disaster aid as a safety net for farmers will not cover the full loss. Policies are available to cover anywhere from 50 to 85 percent of the production value from previous yields, depending on the crop. The higher the percentage, the more expensive the coverage.
"It can be expensive but the liabilities are commensurate to the premium," said Plenn Hunnicutt of South Georgia Crop Insurance in Moultrie. Hunnicutt said he has seen a steady increase in the number of farmers buying crop insurance over the past 20 years.
Due to the scale of the freeze, farmers could be waiting anywhere from two weeks to two months for reimbursement, Hunnicutt said. Adjusters had to wait about a week after the freeze to begin assessing the damage.
"To get a true estimate of it you have to give it time," he said. "If you go out there too early you might not see some of the damage."
Farmers like Peterson have no choice but to wait.
"We've got all of our life savings invested in the farm. You don't have anywhere to go. I guess we love it," she said, then changed her mind. "Not today I don't."
Speaking of agriculture during Georgia Ag Awareness Week
Miniature tractors donated by the AGCO Corp. of Duluth were placed on the desks of Georgia's General Assembly members to mark the first day of Georgia Ag Awareness Week March 20. The first annual observance of Ag
Awareness Week included a display of the department's Seasons and Faces photo exhibit at the James H. "Sloppy" Floyd Veterans Memorial Building across from the Capitol in Atlanta.

Arty's Garden: Let Forsythia ring in spring
April is Pest Control Awareness Month
By Arty Schronce arty.schronce@agr.georgia.gov
Forsythia doesn't seem to be planted
as much as it once was. At one time "yel-
low bells" or "golden bells," as the shrub is
sometimes called, rang in spring in many a
Georgia garden. Not so much today.
It's a slower process with trees or shrubs
than it is with clothes, but a plant can go
out of fashion. It can be popular for years
and then people begin to choose newer or
less common options or select plants that
are widely promoted and produced by ma-
jor growers. Eventually those new things
become overused and pass, and garden-
ers, growers and landscape designers be-
come infatuated with another new plant or
re-discover plants from their childhood or
that their grandparents grew. And the world
keeps spinning around.... It is time for forsythia to make a come-

ABAC hosts annual `Gee Haw Whoa Back'
Rodeo during Homecoming Week
TIFTON--Rodeo fans will fill the stands April 7-8 when Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College presents its annual "Gee Haw Whoa Back" rodeo as a part of Homecoming Week 2017.
Spectators will be entertained with riveting competition during the Professional Cowboy Association-sanctioned rodeo at the ABAC Arena. The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. each night. Gates open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for children 6 12 years old and free to ABAC students and children five years old and younger. Rodeo tickets will be sold in advance and at the gate on the two days of the event. Separate tickets must be purchased for each night.

Cowgirls will compete in break-away roping and barrel racing. The rodeo will also feature some audience participation events and familyfriendly activities.
Alumni Director Lynda Fisher said the rodeo is part of a week-long series of events April 3- 8 designed for students, alumni and the general public. Residents are reminded to
protect homes and businesses
Spring has sprung in Georgia. This season is always a busy time for insects and pests in Georgia, but it is especially the case after such a mild winter. In honor of National Pest Control Awareness Month in April, Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black reminds residents about the risks posed by household pests.
"We will likely see more insects and pests earlier this year due to the mild winter in Georgia," Black said. "Every year, pests cause millions of dollars in damage for our residents and it is important for Georgians to prepare a plan of action to prevent damage from occurring."
U.S. residents spend more than $5 billion to repair damage caused by termites, not to mention the damage caused by rodents and carpenter ants that can chew through walls, flooring and even electrical wiring. Residents also pay for expenses related to medical conditions. Mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus. Household dust mites and cockroaches may trigger asthma symptoms. Stinging insects send more than half a million people to the emergency room every year.
"I encourage all Georgians to take proactive steps to prevent infestations in their homes and businesses," Black said. "All it takes are a few simple, preventative measures to help protect year-round."
In April, consider these tips and suggestions: l Trim back trees and shrubs so they are not
physically touching any building structures. l Walk the perimeter of a structure's foundation
and seal up any cracks or small openings. l Install window and/or door screens and check
for holes or tears. l Keep wood debris and piles of wood
(including firewood) at a distance. l Check plumbing and pipes to eliminate
sources of moisture or standing water. l Tightly secure all food and garbage to prevent
pests from finding their way to the source (this includes pet food dishes and storage containers). l If there are any visible signs of pests or an infestation, contact a licensed pest professional immediately. "April is a great time to have your home or business checked to determine if it's necessary to reestablish any pest control measures, such as termite protection," Black said. "And if control or treatment is necessary, that is one homeowner project best left to the professionals." Consumers are urged to only seek advice from and contract for the services of licensed professional pest control companies. If a company is not licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, it is not legal for them to practice pest control work in Georgia. The Georgia Department of Agriculture is responsible for licensing and regulating pest management businesses. There are approximately 1,200 companies operating in Georgia. Consumers can learn more about the Department's Structural Pest Section by visiting http://agr.georgia.gov/structural or contact the Structural Pest Section at 404.656.3641. Learn more about Pest Control Awareness Month and the Department's Structural Pest Section by watching a short video clip available on the department's website homepage during the month of April: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p9wEBuP-f8

Cook Georgia Grown: Mix it up with peanuts
Peanuts are grown in more than 75 counties in Georgia by some 3,500 farmers. In 2015, the state grew more than half of the nation's crop. In honor of National Peanut Month in March, the Georgia Peanut Commission shared the following recipes with readers of the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin.
Peanut Butter Black Bean Muffins
Ingredients: 1 (15 oz.) can of black
beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup rolled oats,
uncooked 3/4 cup creamy peanut
butter 2/3 cup egg substitute,
such as Egg Beaters brand 1/2 cup celery, finely diced 1/2 cup sweet onion, finely diced 1 Tbsp. hot sauce, such as Smoked Chipotle Tabasco sauce Pepper Jack cheese, shredded Plain Greek yogurt and green onions to garnish
Preparation: Mix the first seven ingredients together to form a batter-like mixture with some texture left. In a small muffin pan, prepared with cooking spray, fill the cups 2/3 of the way full and bake at 350 degrees F. for 18 minutes, rotating once to allow even cooking. Remove and top each muffin with one tablespoon of shredded cheese. Bake for an additional two minutes. Remove and cool before removing from the muffin pan. Serve with a small dollop of Greek yogurt and green onions on top as a garnish.
Yields: 24 muffins Serving Size: 3 small muffins Recipe Note: This makes a nice high protein bread substitute.
Peanut Power Breakfast Muffins
Ingredients: 6 large eggs 1 medium sweet yellow onion, chopped
1 cup fresh spinach, chopped
1/2 cup dry-roasted peanuts, chopped
1/2 cup Italian cheese, shredded
1 (3 oz.) package of dry packed, julienned sundried tomatoes, chopped
1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper
Preparation: Mix all ingredients together well and spoon into a prepared mini-muffin pan which has been sprayed with baking spray. Bake for 18 minutes at 350 degrees F. Let cool slightly before removing from the muffin pan.
Yields: 24 mini muffins Serving Size: 3 muffins Recipe Note: These muffins make a nice breakfast component or finger food for a tailgate or party. They are similar to a crustless quiche.
Roasted Peanut Egg Salad
Ingredients: 2/3 cup celery, finely diced 1/2 cup roasted peanuts,
coarsely chopped 1 hard-boiled egg, finely
chopped 1 Tbsp. mayo 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp. sweet relish
Preparation: In a large bowl, mix all ingredients and serve on a bed of lettuce, on whole grain bread, or multi grain crackers.
Yield: 2 meal sized servings Recipe Note: This makes a nice dish for a light buffet, tailgate, or holiday table.
Spicy Peanut Stir Fry
Ingredients: 2 Tbsps. peanut oil 1 cup carrots, sliced on the diagonal 1 cup celery, sliced on the diagonal 1 Tbsp. hot sauce, such as Tabasco Chipotle Smoked 1 Tbsp. soy sauce 1 Tbsp. teriyaki sauce 1 medium Vidalia onion, sliced 1 cup broccoli, cut into bite-sized florets 1 cup cauliflower, cut into bite-sized florets 1 cup fresh spinach, coarsely chopped 3/4 cup roasted peanuts Preparation: Heat the wok over medium-high heat and add peanut oil. After 30 seconds, add the carrots and celery and allow to fry for 1 minute. Add the remaining ingredients except spinach and peanuts. Cook, stirring regularly, until the vegetables become crisp and tender. Add the spinach and peanuts in the last 2 minutes of cooking to wilt the spinach and heat the peanuts. Crisp, but crunchy veggies are just right. Serve with rice. Yields: 4 servings

Way Back Wednesday:
That which we call a sultana....
Sultanas were one of the most popular flowers offered in Market Bulletin advertisements in the 1930s, but you don't see any being sold today. Well, at least not under that name. Today, "sultana" has almost disappeared, replaced by the more scientific, but less poetic, "impatiens." Call them what you wish! They are a popular annual for shady areas and are available in a wide array of colors. Look for them in your local garden center this spring and plant them after danger of frost.
-Way Back Wednesday is an occasional series of fun facts and figures pulled from the archives of the Farmers and Consumers Market Bulletin in honor of our 100th year in print.
Everything old is new again:
Tractor maker borrows from the past to
empower small farmers
The first Allis-Chalmers Model G tractor rolled off the assembly line in Gadsden, Ala., in 1948. Designed for small farmers and gardeners, the Model G was a bridge to mechanization for many in the United States. It featured a rear-mounted four-cylinder engine and bellymounted implements that were easily visible from the driver's seat. With a sticker price just under $1,000, the tractor proved popular with truck farmers, but never made it as big as AllisChalmers had hoped. The line ended in 1955 with fewer than 30,000 produced.
An Alabama businessman is betting that the Model G's time has come again. Horace Clemmons of Paint Rock is marketing his Oggn Tractor to small farmers. Patterned after the Model G, the tractor is already winning fans. One farmer recently dubbed it "the people's tractor."
The Oggn is manufactured by Liberty Steel Fabrication in Fyffe, Ala. It is built with off-theshelf parts readily available from stores such as AgSupply or any auto parts retailer. That makes it easily repairable by the farmer in the field or by a mechanic of the farmer's choice. The company will even share its design plans for Oggn implements so that farmers can have them built by local machine shops.
"We were inspired
to make something that was modern and something that was affordable because there's not a lot out there for small farmers, as far as equipment goes," said Locky Catron, Clemmons' partner in making and marketing the Oggn. "We serve the small farmer because they have been underserved, forgotten by the industry."
The tractor can be fitted with three-point hitches in the belly and rear to accommodate implements for cultivation, plowing, bush hogging, tilling and grading.
The Oggn was originally developed for the Cuban market, where farming is still accomplished largely through manual labor and livestock. At the suggestion of Cuban farmers, the tractor is named for the mythical Cuban god of metalwork.
The tractor sells for $10,000. According to yesterdaystractors.com, that's the price collectors will pay for an exceptionally well restored
Model G with original implements. Learn more at www.thinkoggun.com.

State Veterinarian suspends poultry events due to Avian Influenza outbreaks in Tennessee and Alabama
Effective immediately all poultry exhibitions, shows, sales (flea markets, auction markets), swaps and meets in the State of Georgia are suspended until further notice.
Avian Influenza (HPAI or LPAI) has NOT been found in Georgia poultry.
However, due to the recent confirmations of Avian Influenza in Tennessee and reported investigations in Alabama and in an effort to minimize the risk of introduction of HPAI (or LPAI) into our Georgia poultry flocks, it is recommended for all Georgia poultry producers and enthusiasts (commercial and backyard) to observe the following:
Implement STRICT BIOSECURITY on all poultry premises. Alert all company personnel, growers, farm workers and service personnel of the increased risk of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Focus biosecurity methods on preventing any exposure to wild waterfowl or their droppings. Keep up your biosecurity AT ALL TIMES, especially as it relates to ESSENTIAL visitors and ENTRY biosecurity.
All outdoor poultry should be moved into biosecure housing and any contact with wild birds of any kind, especially waterfowl, their habitat or their droppings should be avoided. If this is not
possible, the Georgia Department of Agriculture should be notified.
If you use rendering for dead poultry disposal, please verify that the trucks are disinfected at each pick up and that the freezer area is kept clean and clutter free. If you use rendering pick up for livestock, please do the same. If you visit a rendering plant for any livestock, clean and disinfect your vehicle before returning to your farm.
Take the necessary precautions around any congregation points for growers or backyard owners. Do not bring disease back to your poultry.
Monitor all flocks for increased mortality or clinical signs consistent with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), and report any concerns immediately. The consistent clinical sign in all the current reported cases to this point has been a marked rapid increase in mortality over several days.
Enroll in the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP).
Please contact the HPAI HOTLINE for reporting of sick birds or for questions related to HPAI. Georgia Department of Agriculture: www.ga-ai. org, 855.491.1432; Georgia Poultry Laboratory: www.gapoultrylab.org, 770.766.6850.

Spring plant sales offer greater choices, expert advice for gardeners
By Arty Schronce arty.schronce@agr.georgia.gov
In the spring, nurseries and garden centers are flush with trees, shrubs, vegetables and herbs. Springtime also brings a crop of plant sales held by master gardeners, garden clubs, public gardens and plant societies that further broaden the options of Georgia gardeners.
Some of these sales include plants from nurseries or products from other vendors. Most consist of plants grown or donated by the groups themselves. All provide the opportunity to meet other gardeners and learn from them.
"Our plant sale has been at the same location for at least the past 20 years and has many repeat customers," said Margaret Anderson, president of the Marietta Gardeners Club.
She said much of what they offer is determined by the feedback they receive from customers. Club members dig plants from their yards, root cuttings, provide bulbs or grow plants from seeds.
"We try to provide unusual, hard-to-find varieties, older varieties and some heirlooms. Many plants are considered pass-alongs and are varieties that do well in this area," she said. "Our members, who can be identified by our red shirts, answer questions and help new gardeners with their plants. Most of our plants are in large individual pots with welldeveloped root systems."
The Spring Garden Expo of the Hall County Master Gardeners is in its 15th year and features more than 50 vendors who will be providing plants and products and answering questions. The sale helps the club raise funds to support its many projects throughout the year, said Patti Lewis, chair of the event and 2017 president-elect of the club.
The sale also benefits local gardeners by offering "many head-spinning selections of every aspect of gardening one could think of," she said, including "many plants that you just won't find elsewhere."

related topics led by the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service.
"The annual plant sale is our only fundraiser," said Marjorie Stansel, president of the Douglas County Master Gardeners. "There will be a large variety of perennials, shrubs, annuals, herbs and vegetables many old favorites and some hard-to-find plants."
The sale is so successful that it typically provides funds for more than 20 local projects, including the group's garden for Feed the Hungry.
The Georgia Iris Society show and sale is an annual floral rainbow that is a treat for the eyes and a good place to learn about new and historic bearded irises as well as other varieties of irises. It is also a good place to pick the brains of some of the state's iris experts and to pick up some irises that are not commonly available.
"We will be selling tall bearded irises that are already potted," said society member Diana Wright. "We ordered these rhizomes especially for the sale and potted them ourselves." However, spring plant sales are not just dedicated to ornamentals.
Those interested in native species may want to contact the Georgia Native Plant Society or attend one of the sales and seminars held at the botanical garden of the Decatur Campus of Georgia State University Perimeter College. Native plants are not always readily available, and the sales and information provided by these two organizations are spreading the word about the usefulness and beauty of Georgia's indigenous species.
"What have become more popular each year are our vegetable plants," said Dave Granroos, chair of the Coweta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers' Spring Plant Sale. "We feature plants that are right for Georgia's planting zones and for Coweta County."

The group's spring and fall plant sales support agricultural scholarships, 4-H programs and youth gardening programs for the Newnan Boys and Girls Club.
"Not only can you load up on plants at great prices, but your dollars support our programs to teach children about gardening and nature," said Denise Dasher, assistant chair of the sale.
Some spring plant sales have already occurred, but there are more to come and some in the fall as well. The cafeteria in the building serves breakfast and lunch to nearly 10,000 people a week, most of them state employees, lawmakers, lobbyists and guests attending the ongoing legislative session. On March 21, Gov. Nathan Deal and Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black presented Georgia Grinders of
Chamblee with the grand prize in UGA's annual Flavor of Georgia contest at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot. Ag Hero Day March 22 was marked by the premiere of the department's Ag Superhero Video, celebrating Georgia farmers (view it online at https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=Ep4r_-SPo1g.) Com-
missioner Black also read "Who Grew My Soup?" by Tom Darbyshire to a kindergarten class at Morningside Elementary School in Atlanta before touring the school garden. Ag Awareness Week was designed to start a statewide conversation about the importance of agriculture, which is Georgia's No. 1 Industry.
