Georgia's Feed My School program wins praise from Perdue
Seven school systems win admission to 2017-2018 program

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary W. Black announced that the Georgia Grown Feed My School for a Week program is growing to include 30 schools throughout Georgia.
Black said that school systems participating in the Feed My School program are the driving force of the farm to school movement within the state of Georgia and the key to success for the 20/20 Vision for School Nutrition in Georgia. The 20/20 Vision program aims to have at least 20 percent of every meal in every Georgia public school to be comprised of Georgia products by the start of the 2020 school year.
"Through the Feed My School programs we are able to change the purchasing habits of a generation from the time they enter our school systems," Black said. "Our aim with the Feed My School program is to create a focus on Georgia Grown products for these young students."
The department's success with its Feed My School program even received accolades from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, who cited the Georgia Department of Agriculture in remarks to more than 7,000 school nutrition professionals who attended the 71st Annual National Conference of the School Nutrition Association in Atlanta July 12.
"Being right here in Atlanta, Georgia, I've got to give a shout-out to our Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black and his Georgia Grown program," Perdue said. "They're working with our youngest students to teach them about local products so that they can begin to influence household buying decisions, hopefully as they seek out locally grown farm

products. I encourage each of you, if you're not doing that already, to work with your state departments of agriculture on growing your farm to school partnerships."
The quality of applicants to Georgia's Feed My School program this year led to the addition of three new schools. They are: Statham Elementary School, Barrow County Schools; Elbert County Primary School, Elbert County Schools; and Treutlen County School (one K-12 school).
Feed My School for a Week launched in 2011 to help bridge the gap in nutritional value and quality of food served in Georgia schools while also providing more farm to cafeteria opportunities. Through the efforts of the schools selected for the FMS program, the

Georgia Department of Agriculture is able to identify local agricultural products available to school systems in diverse areas.
In conjunction with the Feed My School for a Week program, the department also coordinates the Georgia Grown Test Kitchen program. This is the fourth year of the program, which promotes local and healthy eating in schools by supplying school nutrition directors with healthy recipes using Georgia Grown commodities.
This year's additions are: Glascock Consolidated School, Glascock County Schools; Radium Elementary, Dougherty County Schools; Pleasant Grove Elementary, Henry County Schools; and Metter High School, Candler County Schools.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture will supply the new Test Kitchen schools with recipes using Georgia Grown commodities that will contain nutritional information as well as information on how to source the listed products. In turn, the schools will provide feedback on the given recipes and participate in other Georgia Grown activities throughout the year. Georgia Grown Test Kitchen recipes are chef created, cafeteria employee tested and student approved.
Find Georgia Grown Test Kitchen recipes at feedmyschool.org. Test Kitchen recipes are created to fit into the USDA National School Lunch Program meal pattern.

Field Day offers a preview of the 40th Annual Sunbelt Ag Expo

Mail to: Published by the Ga. Department of Agriculture Gary W. Black, Commissioner

By Amy H. Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
Farmers, agricultural extension agents and educators from around the state got a preview of things to come when the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo hosted its annual Field Day July 13 in Moultrie.
A morning-long tour of the 600-acre Darrell Williams Research Farm at Spence Field offered a brief glimpse at mid-season crop trials and research that will be shared in full with growers who attend Sunbelt in the fall. This year's expo scheduled for Oct. 17-19 will be the 40th.
Chip Blalock, executive director of the Sunbelt Ag Expo, said field day is an opportunity for growers to hear about the latest in seed varieties, crop protection, soil fertility and irrigation and to see new varieties of cotton, peanuts, corn, soybeans and forages during the growing season. Those crops will be harvested in October.
"We'll do the cotton harvest, we'll do the peanut harvest which includes digging and picking we'll do the soybean harvest, and the most popular demonstration is our hay demonstration," Blalock said. "You'll see 10 hay balers running side-by-side, everything from cutting to tedding to

raking to baling to handling the bales afterwards. It's just a great opportunity to gather information to take back to your farm to make life better on the farm."
Among the presenters was Stanley Culpepper, weed scientist for the University of Georgia Extension Service in Tifton, whose research on pesticide drift at the expo farm helped Georgia avoid problems that have plagued other Southeastern and Midwestern states.
States engaged in cotton and soybean production are working through the first growing season in which farmers have been allowed to apply auxin herbicides to plants that have emerged from the soil.
Herbicides like 2,4-D and dicamba are used to fight Palmer amaranth, or pigweed, a Roundup-resistant weed that competes with cotton and soybeans for nutrients and space. Seed companies have developed cotton and soybean varieties that are resistant to the auxin technology, giving farmers the upper hand in the battle against pigweed. However, dicamba in particular is prone to volatilization and off-target drift, which damages other crops and ornamental plants growing nearby.

Guest Column: Free money?

By Jen Erdmann
jen.erdmann@agr.georgia.gov
Need a new tractor? Looking for capital to start producing and marketing the secret family recipe for fig preserves? You're not alone. At least once a day I receive a phone call from a nice farmer in Georgia asking how they can get a government grant to fund their needs and dreams.
No one likes to be the bearer of bad tidings, but I'm afraid that often becomes my role in these situations. I explain to the caller that the State of Georgia does not offer grants to individual farms and businesses for these purposes. However, there are some resources out there from the federal government and other places that may be worth a look. But first, a quick explanation about what grants are and what they are not: government grants are not available for individuals looking to begin, save, maintain or expand a business. Government grants typically fund projects and/or research, not people or small businesses, including farms. An example of a government-funded grant project would be one that enables experts to provide outreach and technical assistance services to rural farm communities. Research projects, such as those funded by Georgia's Specialty Crop Block Grant, might fund a university's work on pest or disease management in crops grown within the state, or they might fund a nonprofit growers association's research into new markets for their product. Federal grants are funded by taxpayers, so there are very strict requirements placed on application, selection and re-

porting. The eligibility criteria for federal grants are typically very narrow. Subsidized loans are more likely to be the means by which the federal government tries to help small farms. Finding financial assistance for your farm's situation may be possible, but not without diligence, patience and an open mind to possibilities. That said, I've assembled a list of links to accompany this column that may be helpful, or at least point you in the right direction.
If you're able to find a grant that fits your project and you meet all the eligibility requirements, the next step is to apply. Familiarize yourself with grant writing basics: internet research is your best go-to in this regard. Download the application and carefully note the deadline dates government grants are not flexible in this area.
Next, make sure you have thoroughly read the application and instructions and answer every single question. If a question doesn't apply to your project, say so and briefly explain why. Be specific and clearly convey your plan for carrying out what you will accomplish and exactly how and when you will do it. Avoid repetition, vagueness and catchphrases.
If the application suggests getting letters of recommendation, get them. Collaboration is often key and may be the factor that separates you from the crowd. Make sure your budgets are reasonable.
Lastly, always have one or more people proofread your grant application. Proper grammar and punctuation are essential. If you're turned down for funding, ask for feedback on how you can improve for the next round. Good luck!

partment of Agriculture.

Grant Resources:
A good place to start your research for funding is your local county agriculture extension agency: http://extension.uga.edu/about/county/
Another great local resource is your USDA Rural Development office: https://offices.sc.egov. usda.gov/locator/app
The federal government has recently compiled an excellent guide of funding resources for famers: http://afsic.nal.usda.gov/farms-andcommunity/grants-and-loans-farmers
A set of grant and loan links provided by USDA is here: https://www.usda.gov/topics/farming/ grants-and-loans
Agriculture grants that may occasionally be available to individuals are the USDA-SARE grants: http://www.southernsare.org/Grants/ Types-of-Grants
If you're looking to start a farm, here is some good info: https://newfarmers.usda.gov/

Sunbelt Ag Expo

Culpepper offered an update on his research that now includes Bayer's Liberty herbicide, which is nearly as effective as 2,4-D and dicamba at controlling weeds when applied in a timely manner.
"Next year or the year after we'll make that Liberty system as effective as the auxin system to help our growers have effective options," Culpepper said.
David West, an Ag educator who serves as an advisor to the Dooly County Chapter of the Young Farmer Association, said he was looking forward to taking that information back to cotton growers in his community.
"We're always looking for ways that we can do things more efficiently, and the weed control issues are a big thing in our county because of cotton and Palmer amaranth," West said. "The information that was provided by Dr. Culpepper is going to be very valuable to us."
Decatur County Extension Agent Ty Torrance said field day is a helpful opportunity for growers to see the kind of results they'll get from new seed varieties and associated technologies.
"Hearing about yield results and end results and seeing numbers and everything is good, but it's also good to see what it looks like in the field," Torrance said.
An array of new technologies were discussed at field day, including Reinke's ReinCloud, an irrigation monitoring and control software platform for smartphones, tablets and PCs. Mike Mills, Southeast Territory manager for Reinke, said the program is compatible with older models of his own company's center pivot irrigation equipment and will be compatible with competitors' equipment by October.
But some on the tour, including Extension Agent Torrance, found the old technologies that were featured to be just as interesting.
"One of the most impressive things to me was the propane perspective on irrigation," Torrance said. "That was kind of new to me, seeing the numbers comparing propane to electric and diesel."
Bill Moore, alternative fuel sales manager for Conger LP Gas in Tifton, explained the benefits of propane while standing beside a 200 HP propane-powered irrigation engine installed on the Darrell Williams Research Farm three years ago.
"Propane is about 40 percent cheaper to operate than diesel. We're on a par with electricity," Moore said. "If you're looking at putting in a new power unit and looking to save electricity, propane is an option to look at."

Field Notes: When the law calls

By Amy H. Carter Editor

My ox has been in the ditch for a while now, and the harder I try to get him out, the deeper he sinks in the muck. I got so overwhelmed recently I had to shut my office door and take a personal moment to get my mind right. That's when the phone rang. My greeting was returned by one of those slow-talking country boys Miss Loretta Lynn first told me about.
"Good afternoon, ma'am," he drawled. "I'm sorry to bother you." By way of introduction, he said he was a pilot for the Georgia State Patrol. This is just an aside, but I think we'd all benefit if the state patrol offered classes in good manners to the general public and let me take a ride in one of their helicopters. We could drive to the airport in one of those fancy Dodge Chargers they're so proud of. I'm prone to wander Capitol Hill when I'm at a loss for words, and one day I encountered a tall drink of law and order headed in the opposite direction. He touched the brim of his campaign hat as we passed one another, nodded once in that devastating way that men do when they're being gallant, smiled and said, "Afternoon, ma'am." Even though we were both on foot, I half expected him to ask, "Do you know why I pulled you over today?" To the eternal dismay of the family banker, I always answer truthfully when I'm asked that question. "Yes, sir," I say. "I was speeding, and I'm sorry." It seems like an insult to play coy with someone who catches you doing wrong and who knows that you know you were doing wrong. A man who wears a gun on his hip, a badge on his chest and the yoke of the law on his shoulders can be anything he wants to be; that he first chooses to be kind may be a tactical maneuver, but I take it as a sign of character. Which brings me back to the aviator. He needed a favor of me technically one more thing to add to my to-do list but the longer he talked to me, the faster the tick-tock of the clock faded. I'm a pushover for a good story, and he told his story so well that I wanted to listen all day. When it started to sound like we were getting to the point of his call, I asked more questions to divert him. You understand now how my ox wound up in that ditch? I'm easily distracted by pretty things. Anyway, my gentleman caller was looking for a back issue of the Market Bulletin. He'd found the June 7 paper in a restaurant while assigned to fly a mission out of town. He lost it to the overzealous cleaning crew at his hotel. He wanted another copy because it contained an article about pesticide drift. I never imagined I'd hear myself say this about pesticide drift or a phone call from the law but that made my day. Agriculture isn't my first language, so I'm always afraid I'll put my foot in my mouth when I write stories like that one. It's the kind of article we need to do more of, but it's also the kind of highly technical writing that shows my ignorance. What was more heartening was that the pilot noticed the Market Bulletin in that restaurant and found it interesting enough to pick up. Since June 7, we've been circulating extra copies of the paper statewide to drum up more business. That means more eyes on your ads and, therefore, more potential buyers. It also means a broader audience reading and learning about Georgia agriculture. With the help of a hard-working team of marketing specialists who promote our Georgia Grown program, we've put Market Bulletins and our Georgia Grown Magazine in about 35 restaurants, feed-and-seed stores, farmers markets and agritourism sites statewide. In the seven weeks since the campaign started, we've picked up about 1,000 new subscribers. Added to the boost we got from publicity surrounding our 100th anniversary earlier this year, we've made the acquaintance of nearly 2,000 Georgians who weren't on our subscriber list last year. We're still a little ways from my goal of 10,000 new subscribers before the year ends, but it's a good start. If you're one of the faithful 40,000 who've been with us awhile, thank you for staying. If you've just joined us this year, welcome aboard. If you've got a good tale to tell along with a helicopter, a fast car and a license to drive both like you stole 'em you can call me.

Aug. 6th-12th is National Farmers Market Week, and the Georgia Farmers Market Association is encouraging consumers to "Just Spend $10" with local growers at community farmers markets. This small investment is a great way to boost local economies. Money spent locally is more likely to be reinvested in the community.

Connect with Georgia Grown at the Georgia National Fair

Consignment store, kids' corner tell the story of Georgia agriculture

By Savannah Hartley
The sweet aroma of cotton candy, funnel cakes and candy apples wafts through the air. Nearby, a side-show carny barks, "Step right up! Be the next person to see the woman born with half the body of a snake!" Ah, the guilty pleasures of the fair.
The Georgia Grown Pavilion is one attraction at the Georgia National Fair that will cause you no guilt whatsoever. Georgia Grown is a marketing and economic development program of the Georgia Department of Agriculture that offers promotional and branding opportunities to growers and producers of Georgia-grown foods and valueadded products. The pavilion is an exclusive venue for Georgia Grown products that is open for the duration of the fair every October in the Georgia Grown Building at the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricultural Center in Perry. This year, the fair will run Oct. 5-15.
Stripling's General Store of Cordele sponsors the pavilion.
Last year, 73 vendors placed 800 products in the Georgia Grown Pavilion, a specialty shop sponsored by Stripling's General Store in the Georgia Grown Building.

"Stripling's sees this pavilion as an opportunity to support Georgia Grown," said Ashley Goss, third-generation operator and marketing manager of the Stripling brand. "Georgia Grown has been an invaluable asset to so many companies across the state of Georgia. The indirect marketing efforts have brought awareness and demand to local, small businesses creating wonderful Georgia Grown products. We felt like sponsoring the pavilion would not only continue to support these efforts financially but also provide a very visual, direct way for us to show that these efforts matter."
The store is staffed by fair personnel who handle sales and restock the store. Participating vendors have only to deliver their product before the fair and pick up remaining stock after the fair ends. To cover the cost of operating the store, the Georgia National Fairgrounds retains an 18 percent commission off gross sales of all products.
In 2016, 73 vendors placed nearly 800 products in the store. Examples ranged from Stripling's Jerky to jellies, jams, specialty oils, cheese straws, candies, soaps and lotions and more. Gross sales totaled more than $93,000.
Big Carl's BBQ Sauce, which is made in Brunswick by retired Glynn County Fire Chief Carl Johnson, was a featured product last year. Participating in the store and special product demonstrations presented Johnson with the chance to pitch his sauce to some 500,000 potential customers.
"It's a real opportunity to get products in front of a lot of people," he said. "Folks have a great time, and you meet a lot of nice people."
Members who participate in the Georgia Grown store have the opportunity to feature their products through sampling and also in cooking demonstrations by Georgia Grown Senior Executive Chef Holly Chute. The cooking demo stage which includes free

tastings and recipes to take home is sponsored by Kings Hawaiian.
"We do several demonstrations a day and people want the recipe cards," Chute said. "Customers are able to get those products directly from the store."
The Georgia Grown Pavilion is just one of several enjoyable family activities offered in the Georgia Grown Building at the Georgia National Fair. Parents can take a break from the heat while children learn more about agriculture with the help of Georgie, the Georgia Grown mascot, on Georgie's Farm. A kids' corner for ages two through 10, the farm offers tons of exciting educational activities. A number of vendors representing various sectors of agriculture also take up residence in the building for the duration of the fair to entertain and enlighten fair-goers.
"The Georgia Grown building is a fun onestop shop for interesting facts about Georgia's No. 1 industry and for great-tasting souvenirs in the form of Georgia Grown products featured in the store," said Georgia Agriculture

Are you thinking of selling homemade food items at your local farmers market? Check Georgia's food safety regulations to ensure your product complies

The Georgia Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Division is charged with ensuring the quality and wholesomeness of foods sold to consumers in Georgia. That includes wholesale and retail sales establishments such as grocery stores and mobile food trucks, as well as processing and manufacturing facilities.
Another, relatively new, program under the food safety umbrella is the cottage food program. This program has bridged the gap between hobby and business for hundreds of entrepreneurs since its inception in 2012. The program allows vendors to sell certain homemade food products directly to consumers from their in-home kitchens at fundraisers, farmers markets and over the internet within the state of Georgia. License holders are not permitted to distribute or sell their products wholesale
The cottage food license has provided a stepping stone for many looking to get into the food retail business, minus the risks associated

with opening a brick-and-mortar store front. "Cottage food licenses have allowed nu-
merous smaller retailers the option to sell their goods directly to the consumer. This helps many to get their foot into the door of the food retail industry," said Jessica Badour, recall outreach specialist for the department's Food Safety Division.
This has been true for Michelle Towler, owner of The Little French Bake Shoppe. Towler joined the program not long after its start, and said she has benefitted from the balance provided by the cottage food license.
"I see the need for (the program), and love and promote cottage food licensing. It has been successful because of the flexibility associated with creating your own schedule. When looking to get into food retail production, a cottage license is a great starting place to allow someone to hone their skills and build up clientele," Towler said.
To obtain a cottage food license, a merchant must complete a few simple steps. These include checking zoning and business license policies in their communities to make sure there a no legal ordinances preventing the operation of a home-based business. They must also have water and sewer systems assessed for business compatibility, and complete a

food safety course. From there, a retailer can file an application for a cottage food license with the department of agriculture's food safety division. Once they've passed an initial inspection, a vendor is permitted to sell homeproduced goods that are not sensitive to time and/or temperature control.
Products made and sold under a cottage food license must be labeled to identify the maker, the ingredients, net weight or volume, and the disclaimer that the product is "made
The types of homemade foods permitted for sale under the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Cottage Food License Program include: Loaf breads, rolls and biscuits Cakes Pastries and cookies Candies and confections Cereal, trail mix and granola Jam/jelly and preserves Dried fruits Dry herbs and seasonings Nuts (coated and uncoated) Vinegars (flavored and unflavored) Popcorn and cotton candy

in a cottage food operation that is not subject the state food safety inspections" beyond the initial inspection.
There are currently 732 active cottage food licenses within the state of Georgia, and the number continues to grow each year. For more information on obtaining a cottage food license, please visit agr.georgia.gov/cottagefoods.aspx.
