Five specialists in large animal health care commit to serve rural Georgia
The State Veterinary Education Board of Georgia has selected five veterinarians to participate in the inaugural year of the Georgia Veterinary Education Loan Repayment Program. The board received 11 applications for the first year of funding and has narrowed the candidate selections down to five individuals. Participants for the 2017 award year are:
Dr. Jana Powell of Eatonton Dr. LeAnna Wilder of Montezuma
Dr. Madison Fyke of Forsyth Dr. Edmond Strickland of Winterville Dr. Charlie Clark of Twin City
The Georgia General Assembly appropriated $100,000 to the Georgia Student Finance Authority for the 2017 fiscal year to grant financial assistance to veterinarians willing to provide food animal services in under-served areas across the state. The State Veterinary Education Board of Georgia administers the
program and works alongside the Georgia Student Finance Authority to make payments on the student loans of the program's participants after their service period is complete.
Prior to receiving their awards, participants must devote at least 20 hours per week to providing food animal veterinary services in rural counties with populations of 35,000 or less for a period of 12 months. Each participant has signed a service commitment with the board that will require them to dedi-
cate their time to providing services in the rural counties identified in their applications. In total, the participants will serve more than 30 counties in their immediate and surrounding areas.
Funding for the 2018 program year will be available next year for qualified veterinarians. Updates announcing the opening of the next application period will be posted online at http://agr.georgia.gov/georgia-veterinaryeducation-loan-repayment-program.aspx.
Watermelon toss
Workers hustle to keep ahead of the summertime demand for seedless watermelons in a field at M&T Farms near Lyons. Two cutters walk ahead of the main crew, cutting melons off the vines. The fruit is then picked up and tossed from one man to the next to be loaded on the bus, which slows but never fully stops on its roll around the field. The bus will take the load back to the packing shed, where the watermelons will be sorted by size into bins of 28, 35 and 45 and shipped to retailers such as Costco, Kroger and Walmart. Southeastern Hay Contest taking entries
By Merritt Melancon & Dennis Hancock
While laymen may look at a farm field dotted with round bales and think that those bales are all the same, forage farmers and livestock producers know the truth. Hay quality varies widely from producer to producer and from year to year.
Each fall, the Southeastern Hay Contest gives forage and baleage producers across the Southeast the chance to show off the quality of their hay.
This year's contest features cash prizes for the winners of all seven categories, as well as free use of Massey Ferguson-brand hay equipment for the production season. The deadline for this year's competition is Sept. 21. Winners will be recognized during the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo in Moultrie Oct. 17-19.
For more than a decade, the Southeastern Hay Contest has been spotlighting quality hay and baleage production in the region. The Cooperative Extension programs in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina have organized the contest since its inception.
"We hope every quality hay producer from Texas to Virginia will enter for a chance to win," said Dennis Hancock, UGA Cooperative Extension forage specialist. "Our goal is to demonstrate the potential to produce quality hay and baleage in the Southeast. Just as important, we want to highlight the technology that makes it all possible."

If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-656-3722.
Advertisers submitting swine ads must submit proof of a negative brucellosis and pseudorabies test from within the past 30 days. Exceptions are swine from a validated brucellosis-free and qualified pseudorabies-free herd; these operations must submit proof of that certification. If you are faxing or mailing in an ad, the test needs to be sent along with it. For ads submitted online, the test can be attached using the attachments button. Buyers are urged to request proof of a negative brucellosis and pseudorabies test prior to purchase.

Guest Column: A young woman's path into agriculture
Cook Georgia Grown: Watermelon lemonade
(Editor's Note: Savannah Hartley was originally hired for a
summer internship to help us tell the many wonderful stories about
Georgia agriculture that we aspire to bring you every two weeks.
She was pressed into service unexpectedly to fill a more admin-
istrative role shortly after her arrival. Many of you have had the
pleasure of talking with her in recent weeks about your ads and
your subscriptions to the Market Bulletin. As she prepares to leave
us and return to school for her final year of undergraduate study,
we hope you'll join us in wishing her the best of luck in the future.
When she makes it big, we can all say we knew her when.)

Home for me is the kind of one redlight town most people drive through without really seeing. Most people have never heard of Glenwood, Ga., in Wheeler County; never mind finding it on the map. This is the place where I have lived my whole life, until I moved to Tifton to attend college in 2014. Thankfully, I chose Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College as my home away from home, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
ABAC has taught me a lot and it continues to teach me, but one of the most important things it gave me was a greater appreciation for the people and that small town where I grew up. ABAC showed me that it takes small towns like mine towns full of farmers, foresters and loggers to make agriculture what it is. In high school, I participated in speech competition for FFA; there I found my passion for speaking and advocating for agriculture. If I had to choose what I love most about agriculture it would be the people who are the backbone of the industry. My deeply rooted love for agriculture started because I saw firsthand the hard work that anything in the industry takes. My Papa -- Tommy Clark, owner of T.C. Logging -- has worked his entire life to provide for his family. He has been one of my biggest inspirations to advocate not just for agriculture but for all those small town farmers and loggers, because all that hard work should pay off. I can say I am blessed with parents and grandparents who have always taught me to appreciate the little things in life. The memories shared and lessons learned in my life so far are priceless. Pat Clark or Granny Pat as her other 19 grandkids and I like to call her taught me a little bit of everything, from gardening to making the best strawberry fig preserves in the world. Little did I know that dating a guy from another small town like mine meant learning anything and everything about peanuts, cotton and tobacco. That's what his family grows on Heath Farms of Soperton. My boyfriend, Tyler Heath, who also attends ABAC, is yet another example in my life of the hard work and dedication that is put into agriculture. Both my daddy and his daddy, Papa Wesley, worked for the Georgia Forestry Commission. Regardless of how tired my Daddy is from working that day, when he is called to a fire he immediately stops whatever he is doing without hesitation or complaint to go handle it. He always set the example to love what I do so much that it doesn't feel like work. That is how I know I have chosen the right career path, because advocating for agriculture never feels like a job. It's more of a privilege. Currently I am a rising senior studying Agriculture Communications at ABAC. As graduation from ABAC draws near for me, my next step is to attend law school to become an agriculture lawyer. I am excited about my future because no matter where I go or what I do in life, I will be representing one of the things I love most: agriculture. Thank you to the small town and the people in it. They might not take up much room on a map, but they have a huge place in my heart.

Hay Contest
Continued From Page 1
Forage growers in the Southeast have increased the quality of their forage as they've recognized a need for efficiency due to high input costs.
"The key to success has always been timely management," said Hancock.
Good management has been made more efficient through the use of improved forage varieties, advanced harvest equipment and other technologies that have come to the market during the last decade, he said.
"It is hard to recall a more exciting time in the hay and forage industry."
The contest's title sponsor will provide the use of a new Massey Ferguson RK Series rotary rake for the 2017 hay production season and $1,000 cash as the grand prize for this year's contest.
Cash prizes will be provided to first-, second- and third-place winners in each of the seven categories:
Warm-season perennial grass hay (sponsored by R.W. Griffin Industries)
Alfalfa hay (sponsored by America's Alfalfa) Perennial peanut hay (sponsored by the Perennial Pea-
nut Producers Association)
Cool-season perennial grass hay (sponsored by Inland Tarp and Liner)
Mixed annual or other hay (sponsored by Athens Seed Company)
Grass baleage (sponsored by Georgia Twine) Legume baleage (sponsored by Southeast AgriSeeds)
The deadline for entry into the Southeastern Hay Contest is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21. Visit sehaycontest. com for registration information and rules.
Follow the Southeastern Hay Contest on Twitter (@ SEHayContest) and Facebook (facebook.com/SEHayContest) for periodic articles, updates and timely information on producing quality hay and baleage. Visit sunbeltexpo.com for more information about the event at the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo.

Fort Valley State University lends expertise to growing the Twiggs County Schools Garden project
By Caroline Phillips
The Fort Valley State University Extension Service has been collaborating with the Twiggs County Schools FFA to grow collards, broccoli, cabbages, onion, peppers, turnips and other crops for eight years. In addition to helping students grow vegetables, the extension service teaches them how to prepare the produce they've grown through cooking demos. In past demos, they've shown students how to prepare coleslaw and make stir fried collards and cabbage.
"The overall goal of the collaboration is to teach students they can grow their own veggies, and to get them interested in gardening early on," said Terralon Chaney, Fort Valley's family and consumer sciences agent in Twiggs County.
The extension service demonstrates for students how agriculture works from the growing stage to the cooking stage, and introduces students to healthy recipes they can bring home.
The youth have really taken to the program, Chaney said. One student even volunteered to help the FFA teacher water the plants over spring break.
Elgin Dixon, superintendent of Twiggs County Schools, said the collaboration has been great for the schools and the students. Fort Valley offers financial aid, and the Twiggs County FFA program wouldn't have nearly as many seeds or resources without them. Involvement in the program is highest at the high school level, he said.
This year Twiggs County FFA showcased cabbage, collards and broccoli at Fort Valley's 40th Annual Farm, Home and Ministers conference in Fort Valley. This is the second year Twiggs FFA members have participated in the event. Twiggs County Schools won $1,000 for presenting their portfolio at the conference.

Arty's Garden: Surprise, Surprise, Surprise
By Arty Schronce
The rains have brought out the surprise lilies (Lycoris squamigera) a couple weeks early this year. So early they caught me by surprise. I had to check the dates from past years to make sure I wasn't just imagining it.
They are called surprise lilies for that reason they pop up almost overnight and suddenly you have two-to-three-foot-tall pink lilies with large blooms stealing attention away from the zinnias and just about everything else.
They get the name "magic lilies" for the same reason and "naked ladies" because they appear without a hint of foliage. The feminine pinkness of the flowers may have helped achieve the lady moniker. Sometimes you will see a hint of blue at the tips of the petals, which makes me think the ladies may be a little chilly unclothed. The foliage will sprout in the spring.
To be technical, surprise lilies are not lilies but are in the amaryllis family. Some older reference books may list them as "Hall's amaryllis." They are closely related to red spider lilies (Lycoris radiata) that bloom in the fall.
Surprise lilies are taller and have larger leaves and flowers than their spidery cousins. They are very durable and don't mind full sun or half shade.
Ordinary garden soil is fine for planting them, although the bulbs benefit from having clay soil amended with organic matter. Like the red spider lilies, they don't like to be planted deep. Having the tops an inch or so below ground will be fine.
I don't know of any disease or insect problems that bother surprise lilies. The biggest problem in my garden is me. I forget where they are and slice through them with a shovel. Mark where you plant yours with stones or labels or put them in front of shrubbery where you will not be digging. It is not a pleasant surprise to find half a bulb.
A bit of history with your horticulture: the genus name honors Lycoris, mistress of Mark Antony. I've never seen a picture of her, but I imagine her fully clothed in flowing Roman garments.

How Holly Chute became the state's top food ambassador
By Amy H. Carter
amy.carter@agr.georgia.gov
Holly Chute has cooked for six Georgia governors, a former president, European royalty, numerous Hollywood actors and one self-described redneck.
"Jeff Foxworthy had invited Gov. (Sonny) Perdue down to his lodge on West Point Lake to hunt and fish, and as a thank you to his staff, Gov. Perdue invited them up for a Sunday afternoon party at the Governor's Mansion," Chute recalled. "I had barbecue and fried chicken, just real casual, and Jeff came up to me and said, `Wow, that's the best fried chicken I ever ate.'"
Chute offered to pack a to-go box for the comedian, who is best known for his "You might be a redneck if ..." routine. He politely declined. Chute insisted, and Foxworthy eventually gave in.
"One of his guys immediately said, `You might be a redneck if you take a doggy bag home from the Governor's Mansion,'" Chute said, laughing. "Of course, Jeff tells the story differently. He says he grabbed a Ziplock bag and came up and asked if he could take some."
Chute served over a period of 30 years as executive chef at the Georgia Governor's Mansion, leaving about three years ago to be the first senior executive Georgia Grown Chef for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. A native of Long Island, N.Y., she was a newly minted graduate of the Culinary Institute of America when a friend called in 1981 to tell her that
then-Gov. George Busbee of Georgia was in the market for a new head chef. Chute interviewed with the first lady's staff, then with Mary Beth Busbee herself, and was hired on the spot. She didn't even have to cook first.
"When I first started there with the Busbees it was very formal," she recalled. "Between myself and the cook we worked seven days a week, three meals a day. She came in and did breakfast. I came in mid-morning and did lunch for the first lady and her staff, and stayed and did dinner for the governor and first lady. We had butlers back then and it was very, very formal, but I did all my own pots and pans because there just wasn't a lot of staff."
The only piece of commercial equipment in the kitchen was a six-burner stove, and yet Chute and a staff of five managed to feed gatherings ranging from two to 1,000.
A few of the royals who sat at her table: Beatrix, former Queen of The Netherlands; Prince Hassan of Jordan; and Prince Philip, consort to Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.
"When Prince Philip was here he went out to dinner with the governor and first lady and I had to cook for his valet. I served him some cocktails and he got a little loose-lipped about the royal family," Chute giggled.
Exactly what he said, however, is a secret Chute won't share for the record.
Mary Beth Busbee had a cameo role in the 1981 movie "Sharky's Machine," based on a novel by late Georgia author Bill Diehl and filmed in Atlanta, so the Governor's Mansion
played host to the movie premiere. The film's star, Burt Reynolds, was there.
"That was pretty cool because the film company was paying for it, so I had a heck of a budget," Chute said.
The state-funded budget for food and flowers at the mansion never changed, Chute said.
"No governor liked to ask for money for the mansion because it didn't look good," she said.
Built in 1967, the mansion including the kitchen was not fully modernized until Gov. Sonny Perdue's second term.
"Mary Perdue started the Mansion Foundation to do renovations, and (current First Lady) Sandra Deal continued it and they gradually did every room in the mansion. We did the kitchen as a result. I got to pick out pretty much what I needed," Chute said.
Throughout her tenure at the Governor's Mansion, Chute promoted Georgia-grown foods and food products. That is what she continues to do today as the leader of the Georgia Grown Executive Chef program. Her cooking demonstrations at a wide variety of venues from the James Beard House in New York City to the Georgia National Fair in Perry offer foodies from all walks of life a taste of the flavor and diversity of Georgiagrown commodities and value-added products.
"It was a lot of fun and I thought it was the best job in the world," Chute said of working at the mansion, "but I don't miss it at all. I really love what I'm doing now. I love the people. I love to be out in public. I love to promote Georgia."
