Georgia's Zippy Duvall wins presidency of the American Farm Bureau Federation: Gerald Long of Bainbridge assumes leadership of the Georgia Farm Bureau

Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall.

MACON, Ga. Zippy Duvall has been elected for a two-year term as American Farm Bureau Federation president by the voting delegates at the federation's 97th annual convention Jan. 12 in Orlando, Fla. Duvall succeeds Bob Stallman, who served 16 years at the helm of the nation's largest general farm organization. Duvall, a broiler, cattle and hay producer from Greensboro, becomes the 12th president in the federation's nearly 100-year history.
"I am so humbled and thankful for your support and belief in my leadership for AFBF president. I will continue to represent all farmers and ranchers across the states. May God bless each of you as AFBF moves forward," Duvall said after his election.
Duvall began his Farm Bureau journey as a volunteer at his local Greene County Farm Bureau, where he still serves on the board of directors. In 1982, he won the GFB Young Farmer Achievement Award and went on to win the AFBF Award in 1983. Duvall chaired the GFB Young Farmer Committee, and in 1987, he served as chairman of the AFBF Young Farmers & Ranchers Committee and on the AFBF Board under the leadership of the late AFBF President Dean Kleck-

ner from Iowa. The American Farm Bureau Federation was formed
in 1919 by farmers from 30 states. The federation's mission is to serve as "the unified national voice of agriculture, working through our grassroots organizations to enhance and strengthen the lives of rural Americans and to build strong, prosperous agricultural communities."
Gerald Long of Bainbridge is the new president of Georgia Farm Bureau, the state's largest general agriculture organization. Long, who has served as 1st vice president since 2008, succeeds Duvall.
Long is a diversified farmer who raises cattle and grows peanuts, vegetables, corn, cotton, hay, small grains and timber with his family on their farm near Bainbridge. He was first elected to the GFB Board of Directors in December 1999 as a 9th District director representing 14 counties in Southwest Georgia.
"Georgia Farm Bureau is an organization that represents all of Georgia agriculture. We communicate with our elected officials on the local, state and national level to voice the needs of agriculture and advocate for

Boxwood blight is detected in Georgia:

Gardeners are urged to be vigilant for signs of the disease

The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the University of Georgia Extension Service are advising home gardeners to be on the look-out for signs of boxwood blight, a fungus that is particularly harsh to Dwarf English boxwood and American or common boxwood.
Jean L. Williams-Woodward, plant pathologist for the UGA Extension Service in Athens, said the disease has been confirmed in multiple commercial and residential landscapes in Georgia.

"The disease could be found throughout the state, however most of the confirmed detections have been within metro Atlanta and the surrounding counties where boxwoods are common in formal gardens," Woodward said. "Boxwood blight has also been detected on plants brought into Georgia for resale."

Georgia Grown Profile: Cordele-Crisp Chamber capitalizes on small-town vibe

In the beginning there was a group of businessmen determined to bring the future to their community by harnessing the power of the Flint River. In 1923 they pooled their resources to achieve construction of the Lake Blackshear Dam and Reservoir, which led to the electrification of Cordele-Crisp County.
The group behind that feat incorporated in 1954 and became known as the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce. Their efforts to improve the economic development prospects of their small South Georgia town contributed largely to the area's growth as a recreational and agricultural draw.
In addition to Veterans Memo-

rial State Park on the shores of Lake Blackshear and the SAM Shortline Excursion train that rolls between Cordele and historic stops in Leslie, Americus, Plains and Archery, Cordele is perhaps best known as "The Watermelon Capital of the World."
Today the chamber represents 442 members of the Cordele-Crisp County business community with a mission to "support, maintain and promote members businesses and quality of life in our community," said Monica Simmons, president of the chamber.
While agriculture remains the

largest economic driver of Cordele and Crisp County's success, major industries are also attracted to its prime location along Interstate 75. Major employers include: Norbord, an international forest products company; Helena Industries, a manufacturer of agricultural
chemicals; and Marvair, maker of HVAC systems.
Every summer the community comes alive with the harvest of its signature crop and the accompanying Watermelon Days Festival.
"Cordele has retained its agricultural roots and this important economic sector continues to play

a large role in its success today," Simmons said. "Cordele is vibrant during the summer as the watermelon crop is harvested and shipped nationwide."
It is that strong agricultural presence that made membership in Georgia Grown a natural fit for the chamber, Simmons said.
"With agriculture being the number one industry in the state and in our community we knew it would be a great way to promote the ag industry and our community," she said. "The program gives our community another platform to support and promote our ag industry."

Guest Column: Demand for Ag
graduates rises nationwide
By Jeffrey H. Dorfman
University of Georgia College of Agricultural
and Environmental Sciences
Many parents and children today worry about both what college costs and whether after spending all that money they will be able to get a good job. In general, college graduates do get jobs after graduation -- the unemployment rate for college grads is under 3 percent -- but still families of current and approaching college students are concerned. One easy way to reduce the risk of post-graduate un- or underemployment is to gain skills in a field with a shortage of skilled workers. A great example of what students might study is food and agricultural systems. Some such job skills do not require a college degree; welders are in short supply and certified welders can earn $75,000 per year. Thus, learning to weld would be a smart career move for some and financial aid for technical schools teaching these skills is generally abundant. However, for those not interested in welding as a career and committed to pursuing a college education, studying for jobs in the food and fiber sector would be a great plan. The U.S. Department of Agriculture forecasts that over the next five years the annual demand for college graduates in agriculture and food industries will be 57,900 jobs per year. Unfortunately, American agricultural colleges (such as my own College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia) will only be producing about 35,400 graduates per year. Right now this shortfall of college graduates with majors in agriculture is being filled by graduates with other related majors. But the employers would prefer graduates with more background in agriculture. Further, these jobs are not all in direct production agriculture (that is, farming), which accounts for only 15 percent of these jobs. The other 85 percent are in the broader food and fiber industry. In fact, 50 percent of these jobs are in business and management. For example, food processors such as Campbell's Soup or Tyson Foods need people to manage their production facilities, marketing campaigns and finances. Twelve percent of the jobs are in agricultural education, communication or government agencies that regulate and support the food and fiber industries. As agriculture becomes more global, there are good jobs available for students with an interest in international finance and policy and also for those who can speak a foreign language. The remaining 27 percent of these agricultural jobs are in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). These jobs require strong scientific, quantitative and technical training. Employers are also looking for familiarity with agricultural and food systems. For example, a large meat or poultry processing company will likely prefer a geneticist who is an animal or poultry science major with genetics training. A food processing company looking for a food safety specialist will choose a food science major over a microbiologist with no specific training in food safety. You get the idea. Many of these jobs are ones that non-agriculture majors can fill, but agriculture majors already know the background setting and the technical jargon for the industries that are hiring. Plus, these jobs pay well. According to Payscale.com, operations managers within the field of agriculture earn an average of $60,600 per year, agronomists average $45,500, and IT managers in food and agricultural businesses earn an average of $78,500 per year. Across all jobs in what Payscale defines as agriculture, the starting salary averages $47,300 per year with a $5,000 annual bonus. As an added incentive, agriculture colleges are located in state land-grant universities. That means much lower tuition than at private colleges, particularly if you attend one of the state colleges in your own state and pay in-state tuition. Thus, students can earn their degree in an agricultural field and graduate with little to no student loan debt (certainly less than if they attend a private college which typically costs $20,000 to $40,000). So for college students, soon-to-be college students and parents hoping for a good return on their investment in tuition, think agriculture. People will always eat, so jobs in producing, processing, transporting and selling food will never go away. For good-paying, rewarding and secure employment, college students would be well-served to find a major in food and agriculture.

Arty's Garden: Rohdea deserves to be more highly prized and used in Georgia

By Arty Schronce
I'm not sure where to start when discussing Rohdea japonica. I suppose I should start with the name. I simply call it rohdea (pronounced ROHdee-uh), although Japanese rohdea would be more specific. It also goes by Nippon lily, sacred lily, Japanese sacred lily and sacred lily of China.
It's not a lily, however, although its foliage has a lily-like quality. Its flowers appear at the base of the plants and are insignificant.
I have also heard it nicknamed "evergreen hosta." Perhaps that is the best way to introduce rohdea to those unfamiliar with it. It is not a hosta, but is similar in size to the average hosta and thrives in shade the way hostas do. Like most hostas, it is grown for its leaves instead of its flowers.
Rohdea is not as varied as hosta, however. Hostas can have foliage of blue or chartreuse as well as green and be variegated with blotches and edges of cream, white and yellow. Most rohdeas are simply a dark green. Variegated forms are available but harder to find.
Another good comparison would be with the cast-iron plant. Rohdea is dark green like the cast-iron plant but smaller and much more cold hardy. Some reference books claim it is hardy all the way to Boston, while cast-iron plants can suffer during a cold Atlanta winter. Even one rohdea I kept outside in a clay pot showed no winter damage. Like many other evergreens, rohdea can take on a boiled or blanched look during extremely cold temperatures, but it is a temporary condition with the leaves recovering when the mercury rises.
Rohdea is native to Japan and China, and is especially

prized in Japan. It deserves to be more highly prized and used here in Georgia. It is durable and useful. Although easy to grow, it is not always easy to find, however.
I have rohdeas planted on the north side of my house where they never receive a beam of sunlight. One is under a camellia and almost under the front porch. It couldn't be happier. I have several others in a large planter. Last summer, the planter started getting a little sun due to my pruning of an apple tree and the rohdeas showed some yellowing. I am moving it to a shadier area.
Rohdea is suitable for almost any shady garden. It is a perfect companion for hostas. It also combines well with Japanese acorus, wild ginger/little pigs (Asarum spp.), Lenten rose and other hellebores, butcher's broom, poet's laurel, green-and-gold, bletilla orchid and native ferns such as ebony spleenwort, Christmas fern and northern maiden-

hair fern. Some people report their rohdeas bear red ber-
ries and have the photos to prove it, but mine have remained fruitless. Supposedly pollination occurs via slugs, snails or ants.
I also have a potted rohdea in my office. Most of our houseplants are tropical or subtropical and cannot live outdoors. Rohdea is an exception. It is a non-demanding indoor plant as well as an outdoor one. It will never replace spathiphyllum or dracaena because it is harder to propagate, and therefore more expensive.
Because it is slow to multiply, you are probably never going to find rohdea at the big box stores. You will have to look at specialty nurseries and garden centers that don't cater to the masses. If you want one of the named cultivars with variegated or unusual leaves, you will definitely have to do some searching. Because most of the cultivars originated in Japan, they may have Japanese names. Two rohdeas I am interested in obtaining are one with a white edge named `Fuji no Yuki' which means "snow on Mt. Fuji" and one with ridged leaves named `Nobori Ryu' which means "climbing dragon." In my research I have found that in Japan rohdeas are often grown in a special pot named a nishiki bachi. I found some of these exquisitely elaborate containers online. Perhaps it is time to upgrade my office rohdea from its brown terra cotta pot.

the farmer," Long said. Following Long becoming the new GFB president, Robert Fountain Jr. of
Emanuel County, who has served as the GFB Middle Georgia vice president for a total of 15 years, was designated to serve as the organization's 1st vice president.
Fountain has served as Middle Georgia vice president since 2009 and previously held the position from 1997 to 2006. He has served as the Emanuel County Farm Bureau president since 2004 and previously served as vice president and county director.
Fountain is the third generation to own his family's farm located in Emanuel and Johnson counties where he raises cattle, hay, timber, small grains and pecans.
Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the state's largest general farm organization and works to promote agriculture through its 158 county chapters. Its volunteer members actively participate in local, district and state activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors. GFB also offers its members access to numerous benefits that include insurance products, identity theft protection and travel and health service discounts.
Georgia Farm Bureau President Gerald Long, right, and 1st Vice President Robert Fountain Jr. began new leadership roles for the organization after former GFB President Zippy Duvall was elected president of the American Farm Bureau Federation Jan. 12.

Home Cooking:
Soybean surprise

Soybeans are the basis of a great many foodstuffs: tofu, soy sauce, miso paste and soy crackers, as well as cooking oil. They are also a healthy food all by themselves when harvested green. In this state, they are known as edamame and you can find them in the frozen foods section of your grocery store.
If you're looking for something a little different to serve at your Super Bowl soiree, try this edamame recipe from Georgia grown country singer Trisha Yearwood.
Spicy Edamame Dip
Ingredients:
4 large cloves garlic, un-peeled 16 ounces shelled edamame beans (about 2 cups) 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/4 tsp. ground cumin Pinch salt and pepper 4 Tbsps. olive oil 1/4 cup fresh lime juice (about 2 limes) 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro Pita chips, for dipping

Preparation: In a medium skillet over medium heat, roast the garlic, turning frequently, until light brown, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat, cool, and then slip off the skins. Set aside.
Bring about 8 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan and drop in the beans. Bring back to a boil and cook for 5 minutes. Reserve 3/4 cup of the cooking water before draining. Drain the beans and cool.
Transfer the garlic into a food processor and chop coarsely. Add the beans, cayenne pepper, cumin, salt and pepper and process in the food processor. Add the olive oil, lime juice and cilantro and pulse to combine. Add the reserved water a little at a time while processing until smooth (you may not need to add all of the water).
Use pita chips for dipping.

Historical marker commemorates Georgia's role as first grower of soybeans

In May of 1765, the first crop of soybeans grown in North America was planted on Skidaway Island near Savannah. Henry Yonge, surveyor general of Georgia, cultivated seeds brought from China by an ordinary seaman named Samuel Bowen. That first planting took place on a patch of land the size of an office desktop, according to Roger Boerma, a soybean breeder and director of Georgia Seed Development. Only one of four crops that Yonge planted survived, but that one crop was the genesis of a $40 billion commodity in America.
Soybean growers and researchers from all over the U.S. gathered on Skidaway Island southeast of Savannah Jan. 9 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of this historic planting with the dedication of a historical marker on the approximate site of Yonge's Orangedale Plantation.
"My Dad had a saying: You can count the apples on a tree but you can't count the apples in a seed," said James Lee Adams, a soybean farmer from Southwest Georgia and former president of the Soybean Association of America. "Did these guys who planted these soybeans have any idea where it would lead?"
Today 83.7 billion acres of American soil yield 4 billion bushels of soybeans. Soy-

beans are America's second-largest cash crop and its No. 1 export crop. Ironically, China imported 1 billion bushels of American soybeans in 2014, Adams said.
Approximately 180,000 acres in Georgia are planted in soybeans, primarily for the production of cooking oil, although University of Georgia researchers are exploring soybeans' value as an alternative fuel source. Top soybean producing states in the United States are Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and Indiana.
For the longest time, historians credited Benjamin Franklin with introducing soybeans to North America in the 1770s. Various literary accounts had merchant ships carrying soybeans as cheap food reserves and even as ballast, and generally dated to 1804 their arrival in the United States.
Ted Hymowitz, a retired soybean geneticist and emeritus professor at the University of Illinois, was familiar with all these stories when he set out 35 years ago to find the truth about soybeans in America. His research revealed the Georgia connection as he traced the travels of seaman Bowen.
Bowen eventually bought his own plantation, known as "Greenwich," along the banks of the Wilmington River. Now one of Savannah's celebrated historic city cemeteries, Greenwich Plantation was adjoined to Bonaventure Cemetery in 1933.
Beginning in 1766, Bowen used the land to cultivate soybeans. In 1767 he received a royal patent for making soy sauce and vermicelli (spaghetti) from soy plants grown at Greenwich. He also developed a Sago

The Georgia Florida Soybean Association and the Georgia Commodity Commission for Soybeans provided the financial support for the historical marker designed

and placed Jan. 9 by the Georgia Historical Society. The marker reads:
In 1764, Samuel Bowen, a former seaman employed by the Honorable East India Company, brought soybeans (Chinese vetch) to Savannah, the Colony of Georgia, from China via London. Since Mr. Bowen did not have land available to sow seeds, he asked Henry Yonge, the Surveyor-General of Georgia, to plant the first North American soybean crop in the spring of 1765. Henry Yonge's plantation was called "Orangedale" and was located on Skidaway Island. Today the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, a research unit of the University of Georgia, is situated on part of the Orangedale property. Bowen and Yonge's endeavors gave birth to the thriving U.S. soybean industry.
